Hello Frannie, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I am pleased to find that we have something in common. I would like to try and make the connection with our family trees. I want to get my history and go on holiday to explore our roots. I am from Belcourt, N.Dak., in the Turtle Mountains. I am a product of the Hudson Bay Fur Monopoly for beaver hats, which the bottom fell out due to the Silk hat. Hudson Bay sold (grandma's Land) canada to the British. The Metis fled the Winnipeg area south, into the U.S.A., for Louis Reil lost, was hung, and now we have a Louis Reil Day. I have gone back with the Poitra family to Cugo France. I believe it was 1643. I printed it out, gave it to my mother, and it has been lost. Let find out if it connects. Peace, V/r, Michael

Joe,
I am also researching this family. The 1900 Census in Fitchburg, MA shows Desire Brien living with his mother, Mary, his siblings and his two children, Laura and Stanicslas. As for the spelling, everything i have shows it as "Brien".

Delima isn't mentioned in the 1900 census so I can only imagine that she was deceased.

Do you have any information on Desire Brien's father or his mother Mary's maiden name?

thank you,
Lisa

Hello, My dream is to wtite a fictional book with basic facts about the fur trade era of the red river valley, and Louis reil. My La Fromboise and Renville side of the family comes thru Trois Rivera, just outside of Quebec. I need the Brien, Davis and Poitras connection. If anyone has seen the series Centennial, they failed to include the Winnepig, manitoba value to the new world.
Peace, and we will see you in 2010 at the Peace Gardens Metisfest.

The meaning of "Brien" would be from the highest summit, high, or noble.
"Desrochers" is a dit name. Dit name usually were given to troops in the 1600's French army. However, I could not find if my ancester, Louis Brien dit Desrochers, was in the French army. He was a master tailor. He came from Roc Brien, near Ploërmel, Bretagne, France. His father, Julien Éllie Brien, was a bourgeois who owned the land in and around Roc Brien.
Desrochers is a contraction of two words "des rochers", meaning litteraly "of rocks" and "Roc" (as in Roc Brien) also means "rock". Perhaps Louis Brien was given the Desrochers dit name because of his native land. Sorry, as far as I know, there are no metis nor aboriginal indians in my branch of the Brien dit Desrochers. Louis Brien dit Desrochers married Suzanne Bouvier in 1681 in Ville-Marie (Montréal, QC, Canada). They had nine sons and four daughters. I descend from their second child, Pierre.
Does anyone know when Louis Brien dit Desrochers cross the Atlantic from France to New-France? He was in Trois-Rivières in 1669.

Hello could you please explain what Brien (dit Desrochers) means. My name is Michael Brien. We are French Chippewa Catholic Metis in belcourt North Dakota in the Turtle Mountains. Direct desendents from the Hudson Bay Fur Trade era. We recieved a call one day from someone in Canada writing a book on the Brien family, whom are supposed to be Irish from Ireland. From the passed on story tradition is what I know: After the Irish Brien was dethroned, they fled to France. Here they dropped the O of O'Brien, and used the french pronunciation. 2 brothers owned a ship, sailed with others to the new world. On arriving, (I think in the Nova Scota area) they sold there ship. One brother married a native Cree, thus the Metis of the family began. The other went to Minneapolas St. Paul and opened the first trading post. So one went to trap and gather while the other was the shipping point for commerce. With that said my grandfather William Brien birth certificate was located in Regina in Canada. I am #6 out of 7 Boys, no sisters. My father is Dallas Brien, mother Theresa Poitra, William brien and Rose LaFromboise, Charles Poitra and Beatrice Davis and so forth.....I would like to get our family tree back to Ireland, and get any history pertaining. Peace

Hello The Brien's are Metis in the Turtle Mountains of North Dakota. Dallas Brien lives in Belcourt, 701 477 5773. They are French-Chippewa Metis. His father was named William, his Gregiorge, His Alexander. Contact Dale Brien in St. John/Belcourt for the whole family tree. Cardinal, Desrocher, Poitra, Langer, LaFromboise are just a few in the line from the Hudson Bay era.

I have not heard of these Briens, but am always searching for any Brien from Germany. I have only heard of maybe 4 or 5 in the 30 some years I have been searching for this families history. Our Brien family was from the Frankfurt area and only one brother came to America. I believe he came from the Chicago area ... but not for sure. I have a picture of a town and of a church from my Great Grandfather's things. He was born in 1819 in Germany, he married in 1872 and had my grandfather in in 1875. My father was born in 1915 .... so our generations have not turned over very fast. Would love to hear your Brien German connection. Thanks.

Elizabeth's sister, Monica had a double marriage ceremony with my mother-in-law (both marrying two men named Richard Collins)in 1934. I have the wedding picture and would love to share! I am interested to find out how she was related to the Brien Family. Her name was Bridget McGloughlin. Hope someone reads this. Thanks Lynne Collins

Re: Brien's from KY

Hi Amy,
I am distantly related to the Brien family. My 2x Grandfather, Richard Mason Smith, had a half-brother named Dr. Samuel Graham who practiced medicine in Briensburg KY. His wife was Martha Jane Brien, daughter of W. John Brien and Eliza Marshall. I found a website with photos of gravestones in the Wilson Cemetery near Briensburg, KY. There are a lot of Brien family buried there. William Joseph Brien and his wife Zula are both listed, as are my relatives. Here is a link to the site page with links to photos and info on the Brien's:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GScid=...

The town is named for James Brien, a blacksmith, who founded the town. The Marshall family whom Marshall County is named for are also buried here. If you'd like directions to the cemetery, let me know.

I am looking for living Graham family members who may have information about Richard Mason Smith if you ever come across any.
Thanks,
Brian Smith
Tom, been trying to use the link to email but running into problems. Anyway looks like we're 3rd cousins, is that right? Mum was unaware that she had an uncle Tom. Do you know what happened to him?
I noticed you were asking about the Rock families of Moore. Their was a family of them that were related to the Briens, one of them was mum's Godfather and emigrated to Boston. I don't think he's alive now but he did have family there.

Yes Henry 1885-ca 1945 parent's were Gilbert Brien 1837-1917 and Alice Beauchemin 1846-1930. All I knew about my mother's uncle Henry was he was married to a woman named Pauline from Norway and she had polio and was in a wheel chair. Henry's sister Mary Edwidge Brien 1881-1955 was my maternal grandmother.
Anne,
I would like to keep corresponding with you about the Brien branch. Feel free to email me at christiebrien@hotmail.com.
The Brien & Breen confusion frustrated me until I went back to Ireland and realised that the local pronunciation of the name (spelled either way) is "Breen". So anyone dictating names would write it as it is pronounced. I still have to correct most people writing my name, even though we pronounce it Brien.
The photocopies of Valuation of Tenements from Magheraculmoney Parish definitely interest me. Can you tell me more about them? Do they specify a townland or a landlord?
I will now dig into my books and look up the names you mentioned. Off hand, James was a recurring name, and I saw Philip in other branches although not my own. We constantly named children after their grandparents, so the names didn't differ much, yet it is easy to follow a branch. (Although it gets confusing when there are 6 Williams in one generation)
So feel free to email me at my address regarding the Tenements, and I will get back to you regarding the names.
Cheers,
Christie Brien :)

Hi Ken, Your mother not only had an uncle Tom, she also had an uncle Pat both of them her grandmother's brothers. Uncle Tom, my great grandfather lived in Cappaleitrim Roscommon, one townland over from Raghrabeg. He lived to be 98 yrs old and died in 1937 and is buried in the Cloonburren Cemetary with his wife and children & grand children that remined in Ireland. Uncle Pat ( I was told had a drinking problem, now thats a surprise) and sold the family farm to Uncle Tom and immegrated to America and disappeared. No one in Ireland ever heard from him again. I have pictures of both of your mother's uncles taken in the early 1900's and be willing to send them to her. Her uncle Tom Kinsella had 9 children and 5 of them came to America, one being my grandfather John Kinsella. John married Mary Shine from Clonown which is near Athlone. Greta was kind enough to give me your mother's phone number and I am going to call her. John Kinsella ( my grandfather) his mother was Margaret Rock from Cappaleitrim and I am also related to the Kenny's that now live in Cappaleitrm. I believe that your mother & I are 2nd cousins and you and I are 3rd cousins. I hope I have that right. Any why if you wish to try email again its tjk7385@aol.com Tom

Hi again

I've now gone through the papers that my aunt left me. There's very little on the Briens - she concentrated on the genteel English on the other side! There are some photocopies of Valuation of Tenements from Magheraculmoney Parish, which seems to confirm your linking of the families. One of them is printed, the others handwritten - and that's where I immediately ran into difficulty because it was hard to tell if the name was Brien or Breen. Unfortunately there are no definite dates on the sheets, but annotations on the MS copies indicate that they're from around 1865 and 1881. My aunt has put a cross by the name of Philip Breen on the printed sheet, which has no date. On the earlier, handwritten ones, the names at the same map reference are James Breen (1865)and James Brien (I think) (1881) (same person?). Could that be Philip's father?
I know that Philip called himself Brien, because my aunt had his application form from when he joined the Liverpool police force.
The only other information I have comes from some notes in my aunt's handwriting:
"Grandfather Philip Brien, born at Glenarn, townland on side of a very steep hill 1 mile from village of Lack.
Patrick and James Breen
Lack 200 people 25 RC
Lettree townland 2 miles from Lack
St Dympna's church, Dromore, Co. Tyrone 1882" (I think this refers to Philip's marriage)
Does any of that throw any more light? Do you have James or Patrick in your tree?
The Brien/Breen thing is very confusing, isn't it - especially when it's easy to misread one for the other when handwritten.
Regards
Anne

Hi Christie

Sorry for the delay in replying - I was excited to receive your message, as I have very little definite information about the Brien family and it would be great to learn more. I'll look through what little I have (an aunt went to Northern Ireland and did a bit of research years ago) and see if there are any clues as to Philip's parents. I was interested in what you say about the spelling changing to Breen, as there's a family story that our family name was originally Breen, changed to Brien somewhere along the way - maybe that's a garbled version of what actually happened.
Thanks for your help - I'll be back in touch. Regards, Anne
