Hi, thanks for the response. Fascinating story, but what I'm looking for is a family Brier who might have given up three children sometime before the 1850 census to the family of John Peters, married to Mary "Polly" Hulsey. Those three children were William H., Martha Jane, and Susan, who appeared in the 1850 census in Madison, MO in the Peters household with the surname Brier. The most likely, I think, is that a mother Brier could not take care of the children, or a couple Brier passed away, leaving the children. That's why I was asking if your Brier might have been joining Briers already living in the area who might have had these children. One child born 1840, another 1845, and the last 1847. Thanks! Joel

The story I heard as a child was she had money but was as orphan at a young age, She traveled to the United States with her aunt first class, as it turned out her future husband John Charles Krauss was aboard that same ship traveling in steerage. 1900 census says she arrived in 1855, 1910 census says 1861. Somewhere along the time I have come across the name of Mary Greisbaum (unsure of spelling) as possible name of aunt or traveling companion. 1 son born in new Orleans in 1863, then traveled to St. Louis where 5 more children were born then traveled to Bird's Point and believed 2 more children born there. John Krauss died in 1894 and she ran a hotel/boarding house called Anniston Hotel. She died in 1930 and is buried in Charleston Missouri. If this helps you any or you can perhaps connect some dots for me Great.
Debbie

That's pretty interesting, really. Do you think she came by herself, and do you think there were already Brier's that she came to join in Missouri. Anniston is very near where my Peters family was that had the Brier children. I also thought it was just an Irish name, and didn't know it could be German, but that makes sense too because the Peters were descendants of Germans.

Thanks!

She was born in Germany or Austria, not sure, came over by ship either 1855 or 1861 2 different census and both have different dates. She lived in New Orleans, then St. Louis and finally ended up in Anniston Missouri. Believe she traveled to the United States with an aunt, storied told was she was an orphan. Know nothing else, not sure if this helps you any but thanks for replying. Good luck.
Debbie

Brier in Missouri mid 1800's

I have recently decided that my great grandfather, adopted by a Peters/Hulsey family in Madison County, Missouri probably between the 1840 census and the 1850 census is probably a Brier, along with his two sisters Martha Jane and Susan. The census-taker's penmanship was horrible, but my interpretation of his scribbling is "Brier". Any connections with anyone's data or families? William and his sisters were born between 1840 and 1847, probably in Missouri. My suspicion is that the parents died, possibly just after 1847.

Michael Brayer was born in Feb 1870 in Hungary according to 1900 census information and emigrated about age 13 according to correspondence with a family member. He married 1st Millie (probably Emelie)about 1894 and they had children Florence b Oct 1896 (married Saul Lippman)and William Harold b Sep 1899 (married Pearl)in NYC. Adolph, Michael's brother, was living with them in 1900 at 230 E 86th St in Manhattan. Millie died suddenly and he married 2nd Ellie, who may have been a relative of Millie. Here is Millie's obituary "beloved wife of Michael and mother of William H and Mrs. Florence Lippman. sister of Mrs M.B. Ochs, Samuel, Louis, Isaac, and Henrietta Tichner, suddenly on Jan 18.

Hello all. I have been researching my mother's paternal line for some time and have made a lot of progress regarding Bryer/Brier in BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, England. If anyone else has been trying to make sense of the many similar first-names in the villages around Aylesbury (Nash, Thornborough, Winslow etc.) in the 19th century I would welcome to share! I have a number of Brier/Bryer family units who must be connected but I cannot see it!
Nick Bishop

Hello fellow Brier researchers,
I'm am hoping to fill in a lot of holes in my Brier line. Here's what I know...my great great grandfather was Daniel Brier, his wife Marianne Wetzel (dates unknown) Poland. Three known children...Julius Brier (1868-Radom,Poland)m. to Pauline Hauge,Wilhelm (Radom, Poland) and Katarina (1881, Radom,Poland)my great grandmother m. to Wilhelm Hunker. There is an 13 year age gap between Julius and Katarina, so I am assuming that there are more siblings somewhere. I also know that Daniel Brier had a sister Caroline (b.abt 1849)who married Martin Felske. Julius and Katarina both settled in Alberta, Canada. Caroline Felske's families settled mostly in Manitoba, Canada.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Shirley
