Hi all,

Looking for any info people may have on my great grandfather, Richard Brierley, born 1893. His parents were John Brierley and Martha Cook. John was from Oldham, and Martha was from Blackley.

Richard married a woman named Ida Sides in 1921 and had three children: Marion (b. 1921), Harry (b. 1923) and Jean (b. 1927).

If anyone has any info on John Brierley or Martha Cook, I'd be grateful!

My great-grandfather was Richard Brierley (b. 1893). I have no other info on his family except that he married Ida Sides of Ulverston, Cumbria. They lived with their children in Blackley which I believe is relatively close to Salford. Richard and Ida's marriage record from March 1921 was in Prestwich.

Does any of this connect? I'd love to have more info about my Brierley side.

I am attempting to learn what I can about Elimer Brierly who signed his name on a Christmas Card which was given or sent to Ellen 'Nellie' Lutman (1869-1889) who was a native of Quebec City but moved with her parents, James Bone Lutman (1845-1922) and Ellen Miller (1849-1935) to Bermuda, Gibraltar, England and then again to Canada settling in London, Ontario in 1875. It is possible that Elimer Brierly had some connection to the 69th Regiment of Foot to which Nellie Lutman's father belonged. Unfortunately given that no date appears on the card it could have been given to Nellie at any one of her various homes on either side of the Atlantic.

James Brierley born abt 1819 Salford married Elizabeth Edwards 1836.1841 census shows them both living with Sarah and William Edwards, Sarah Edwards age 15,Sarah Brierley age 15,Alice Brierley age 10 and William Brierley age 3.I presume that William age 3 is James and Elizabeths..I have found a Sarah Brierley marrying a William Edwards in 1834 so this looks like 2nd marraiges for both of them..on the 1851 Sarah Edwards born Rochdale is living with son in law Thomas Howarth a widower,grandaughter Alice Finch and lodger Charles Brierley...the 1851 census for James and Elizabeth Brierley is the Salford wet one..a William Brierley,father in law is living with them and comment made is `surname or relationship suspect`..he is listed as born Briney Yorkshire..all this is very muddled and if anyone can connect to any of these names then please get back to me....

Hi June,
Sale Moor is quite close to Salford as the crow flies. I would guess approx 4.5 miles.
All our Brierley's came from the Pendleton area of Salford and I can not see any connections at first search.
Oldham is approx 8 miles NE of Salford and also had a very large Brierley family base.
I know that there are many missing links from our early ancestry and we suspect that they moved out to Oldham but we are still researching to get definite links.

She lived most of her life in Oldham and lived with William Nield. Is this Annie Brierley connected with your family? Would love any information you could give me.

I'm really new to all this and wondered if anyone could offer any help. I am trying to find out who Hannah Brierley's Father is (or any other information you can offer). Hannah was born in 1873 (don't know when she died). She was married to Weber Whitehead who was born 24th March 1871 and he died 7th Sept 1932. They had 3 children Mary, Lees and Albert E Whitehead. my grandfather had a brother called Clifford, although I havn't pinned down his birth date yet. Was he from Rochdale and had brothers called Frank and James?

My gggg grandmother was CHRISTIANA BRIERLEY who married in Walton Le Dale, 14 May 1797, JAMES LANCASTER.

Christiana was baptized at Bamber Bridge April 1772, and maybe have died in Chorley in 1848.

One son, James Lancaster, was born about 1800, and married at Chorley, 13 April 1825, MARY STOCK. James may have had a previous marriage.

Would love to hear from anyone who may have Christiana in their family!

My relative was Thomas Sutherland, insurance broker,b near Manchester 1888. Is he the one who married Rose (or Rosetta or Rose A) Brierley in 1913? Their son Alfred Sutherland was born 18 Apr 1914 and died in Lancashire in 1986. Their daughter Mary Sutherland was born in 1917.
Thomas' mother was Annie Elizabeth Norbury, who died in Urmston Lancashire in 1923.

I've just recently started research on this branch of my family, but Frances Mary Elizabeth Brierley was my great-grandmother! She married Samuel Davis (or Davies) and had 13 children (7 of whom were living in 1910?). Her youngest daughter Amy Josephine Davies was my grandmother, born in Bon Homme County, South Dakota in 1893. I am hopeful you are still online as this query is a few years old!

I have Thomas Brierly b abt 1811 in Rochdale, probably in that parish, who named a son Joseph, but so many Brearley/Brierley/Brierly's with the same given names, no patterns are reliable. Have you checked the 1841 Census. Thomas appears, maybe Joseph also. I believe Thomas father named Abel or possible David.

I have Brierly's from Rochdale in 1841 Census Thomas and sons Samuel Joseph and Jonathan. Another son James Manock Brearley born in 1845 when they emigrated to Racine, WI. The name is spelled Brearley on tombstones, but at least 6 variations appear in Rochdale records, and there are MANY MANY of that name which makes finding the right ones difficult. Are there any Brearley's in Rochdale reading this board?

I don't know of any connection but thought I'd butt in here since the subject is appropriate. My g-g-grandfather Thomas Brierley (Brearley in later censi) lived acc. to 1841 census in Broad o'th Lane, Rochdale (can anyone confirm this is Spotland Road now?) with wife Betty (Laycock) and 3 sons at time, Samuel, Joseph, Jonathan. Son James Manock born 1845 in Broad o'th Lane and then whole family in Racine, WI, USA by 1848 including Jonathan Laycock, presumedly Betty's brother. Thomas and Betty were weavers. Not yet found parents, reportedly Abel and Mary, possible Abraham or David. Thomas' age is at conflict wi census by 4 yrs but rest of family, spot on. Any hints of parents or siblings greatly appreciated. Cheers!

I am not related to the Brierley family, but I have seen the name of your family's undertaking business on many of the records pertaining to my ancestors, who lived in Kearny from the 1880's to the 1960's or so. Their family names included Lord, Partridge, and Nixon, as the main ones who were in Kearny.

Just saying hello, as our ancestors probably knew each other semi-well.

I also have a John Charles Brierley in my ancestry. He was born in Australia about 1860. His grandfather was James Brierley born in Lancashire about 1780. It is a long shot but names are often reused in those days so wondered if there is a connection way back. Regards Rosalynde

I am also chasing the Brierley name. My ancestor was James Brierley transported to Australia in 1813 for 7 years. He was a weaver and was involved in the riots surrounding the weaving mills in Lancashire. He would have been born about 1780 in Lancashire. Parents unknown. I wonder if anyone could help me break through this brick wall.
I am trying to find information regarding the family of William BRIERLEY/BRIERLY. (aka Thomas COLLINS). He was born c1824.
William, then known as Thomas Collins, was convicted at Salford of a very minor crime and transported to Australia in 1845.
His indent papers show his proper name as William Brierly and that he last lived with his uncle, Abraham, at native place, Hollingworth, which is now part of greater Manchester, about 6 miles west of Manchester and Salford is about 1 mile slightly NE of Manchester.

Hi. Can't help you out with the Brierley side of your ancestors but Sarah J Catlow's Grandfather James was my Great, Great, Great Grandfather. Before emigrating to New Jersey they lived in the Ashton/Oldham area of Manchester and all worked in the Hatting and Cotton industries. James's father George was as far back as I have got and he was born in Haughton in 1785.

Brierley, Dunkerley, Woodward connections Lancashire 1880s

I am tracing my relative Annie Williams who married Stephen Woodward and moved from Lancashire to Kokomo, IN in late 1880s. Annie was born in Woolton 1861, d/o Owen Williams and Margaret O'Neill. She married Stephen about 1885 and had 3 kids before moving to IN and then added about 9 more.

Stephen was listed in the 1881 census, as nephew, with Sarah (nee Brierley)and Ben Dunkerley in Liverpool. I think that Sarah may have been the sister of Stephen's mother but am not sure. I found a marriage record in 1859 Holy Trinity, Oldham for Mary Brierley and Joseph Woodward. Does anyone know if Joseph and Mary are Stephen's parents?

I am hoping to find descendents of John Charles Brierley (1839-1919) and Hannah Nancy Hulbert (1840-1925). They were both born in Manchester England and emigrated to the U.S. settling in New York in, I think, the 1860s. Their children were George Henry (my great-grandfather, married to Cora Jane Romer)); Hannah (Percival); John Charles (m. Hi Roy I dont think I am related to you but saying that I havnt got any further on the Brierley side than my grandfather.His name was Harold Brierley and lived with Mary Ellen Mitchell formerley from Chorlton.2 of their children were born at 34 Greengate in Salford.Mary Ellen is down as Brierley but they never married.She was formerly married to Thomas Mitchell and her maiden name was Goulden.I have no idea on dob or where born for Harold Brierley.If you can help in any way would much appreciate it.Thank you Wanda.

Researching family tree into Brierleys from Manchester.Father James born Salford 1925 and Herbert 1928.Fathers name Harold Brierley (nickname Brassy) married but cant find any entry to Mary Ellen Mitchell from Chorlton.She was previously married to Thomas Mitchell in 1914 and her maiden name was Goulden.She had 4 other children William 1911,Mary 1914,Leo 1919 and Harold 1922.Leo and Harold were sent to Buckley Hall in Rochdale on the death of their mother in 1931 and James and Herbert to Our Ladys in Didsbury.Herbert later went to Buckley Hall.Has anyone any connections to my family please.

Mary Hannah Brierley married Luke Walker Maud in 1910 they are the parents of Stanley Walker Maud who married my fathers sister Mary Phillips in 1937.

Hello any Brierley's out there that may me connected to the family in the Salford / Manchester / Lancashire / England.
The area is now Greater Manchester for the most part.
My Great Grandparents, their other partners and all their many children are all pretty much confirmed with Birth, Marriage and Death certificates. There are lots of loose and dead ends that I am still searching for.
I have Samuel Wesley Brierley 1842-1915, Harriet Ann Shigley born Liverpool in 1851 I have a William Tyler born Ince, Cheshire 1849-1887, Samuel Ashton who married Harriet Ann Brierley in 1919. Sam,s, Samuel's, Ernest, Maria Brierley's who were their children. Also Harriet Elizabeth, Anna, Mary Anne, William, Nellie and Lillie Tyler. All the children born between 1872 and 1899.
Predominence of Brierley's living in Pendleton and around the Salford area (I was born in a house inside the Salford Docks).
Have full trace of all family from Samuel Wesley born 1896 and Ernest Brierley born 1895. Some recordings have been incorrectly shown as Westley.
Love to hear from and assist anybody who thinks that they may be connected.

Brierley/Tipping

Hi, I'm trying to research my family and have got stuck on my ggrandfather John Brierley born in Macclesfield, c 1844. He married Eliza Barrowcliff in 1863 in Derby. His father was James, a silk dyer, born in Devon I think, around 1812.

I can't go any further back because the family seems to have changed their name to Tipping on some census returns, but kept it as Brierley (or variants) on certificates. Is this possible? Were they originally Tipping or Brierley/Breeley/Brearley/Briley?

I'm fairly new to research so I would be very grateful if anyone could help with more information as I'm unsure as to where to go from here.

Just now saw your message and am wondering if my Thomas E. Brierley fits somewhere in your family. Thomas was born in 1901 and according to his obituary, a native of Manchester, England. He married my aunt, Marion Elizabeth Durkin born and raised in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Also according to his obit, a sister, Mrs. Beatrice Carney of Niagara Falls and two brothers, Arthur of Dayton, Ohio and George of Lewiston, N.Y. Hope to hear from you, Linda

Have not got much on Brierleys in Haslingden, most of my Brierleys are from Walton Le Dale, Blackburn, Preston however have a Benjamin born c 1800 with wife Elizabeth marr around c 1820 who was living in Haslinden in 1826 and also a number of Brierleys living in Haslingden Road Blackburn in the 1901 Census, sorry not much help. The main Haslingden surnames I have are Tomlinson, Stephenson and Richardson

I am sure that your Sarah Catlow must be my great grandmother who married my great grandfather James who had been married before and widowed. Together they had two children William and George. William was my grandfather who died when my father was very young. Everyone is gone, in the family, and it is so hard to track down relatives. I did know that some of them immigrated from Rochdale. Mike, Thanks for your response. I wrote that query a long time ago and had almost forgotten it. I was trying to find out some history on my ancestry going back to Rochdale England. So far nobody from there has answered. I was born in Kearny and moved to Clifto after about a year. My parents were both raised in Kearny. Although I am a funeral director, I never worked for the Brierleys in Kearny. I do know that my cousin Jim Weisgerber, a funeral director, had a brother-in-law with the last name of Lord. He was a director with VanTassel's in Bloomfield. I also had a neighbor two doors away from me in Clifton named Cecil Lord. He had a son Peter and a daughter Priscilla. Thanks again for the response.
