I am interested in your work on William C. Brigance. He may be the brother of my ancestor Elizabeth Brignance who married Isaac Looney in Sumner Co., Tennessee.

William,

I believe some counties east of the mountains in North Carolina were never part of Tennessee. I've also found some documentation that some Brigances lived in Guilford County which was never a part of Tennessee.

I think Al got stuck on the notion that all of Tennessee was once North Carolina. Well, where did North Carolina come from then if all of it eventually became Tennessee? I believe some of the land closest to the mountains, on the western part of North Carolina, became Tennessee. According to the history people in Guilford County, this county was never a part of Tennessee.

Teri

reminder that during the years between 1789 and 1796 Tennessee was not a state. Before 1789 it was part of North Carolina. Seven years it was just Government land. Sumner county Brigances lived here before we were a state so some records are in North Carolina.I'm related to the other brigances same as Albert.

William O.
Hi Teri,
I must have missed your first reply. I commend you on your website, and I am hoping you can help confirm some things on our SHAW line. William Shaw b. 1758 Co Down Ireland d. 1842 Lincoln Co TN. Father of William is believed to be Patrick Shaw and Patrick had a son named John. Is this the same John whose daughters married Alexander Brigance? Grandson of William Shaw came into Pope County ARK and also other grandsons of William went to Grayson Co TX. Would love to communicate more on any SHAW info you might have that connects your John to our William. Feel free to email me directly at ashaw444@swbell.net
Kay,

Thanks for the offer, I might just take you up on it. At the moment there is a woman who lives in Raleigh who is doing research for me at the NC Archives. She has found some deed abstracts and a few other little tidbits that I hope to expand upon but considering she charges $25 per hour for her time, it's getting costly. I've already paid about $150 plus copies/postage costs.

I have an email into Al Brigance and I sent him copies of what she found. I could also send your brother copies of the documents and ask him to look up specific documents (i.e., complete deeds, etc.). I would like to ask her to look at church records and any records from Orange County and one of the other counties that split from Guilford County. The abstracts that she found were from Guilford County.

My uncle, Don Brigance, lives in Kernersville, forget what county that is but it's not far from Greensboro, but since he's disabled he can't do any research for me.

Let me know your thoughts.

You can email me at tltighe@aol.com.

I've recently compiled all of William C. Brigance's descendants into my Family Tree Maker file and created a pdf document with this information. The document is 105 pages and contains an index at the end.

Would anyone be interested in receiving a copy via hard copy or cd? Below is how the information would look.

Descendants of William C. Brigance

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM C.3 BRIGANCE (WILLIAM2, ???1) was born Abt. 1791 in Sumner Co. TN, and died 1843 in Pope Co. Arkansas. She was born Abt. 1790 in Surry County, North Carolina, and died Abt. 1842 in Pope County, Arkansas.

Children of WILLIAM BRIGANCE and SARAH SPARKS are:
2.	i.	ALEXANDER J.4 BRIGANCE, b. Abt. 1814, Sumner County, Tenn.; d. Bet. 1880 - 1889, Grayson County, Texas ?.
3.	ii.	ALBERT CAROLL BRIGANCE, b. April 22, 1817, Sumner Co., TN; d.
Brigances born in North Carolina

Hi all,

For those Brigances that were born in North Carolina in the later 1700's can anyone tell me what documentation you have?

I was following up on Al's information for North Carolina with regard to the "Calendars of Manuscript Collections" dated April 3, 1777 in Gilford County, North Carolina. I thought maybe that John and William Brigance, who are mentioned, were in the Revolutionary War and they were in Gilford County serving in the militia.

I just bought the "Military Records: Revolutionary War Muster Rolls" from Ancestry.com but there are no Brigance's listed or any variations of the name. Were they fighting in North Carolina or did they live there?

I borrowed the above book through interlibrary and it seems that there are 2 pages typed of this record but I'm trying to find it the entire document through interlibrary if I can.

I thought maybe if I worked backwords through North Carolina some information might be found that would point north towards Pennsylvania and other states.

If anyone can shed some light on any North Carolina info it would be appreciated.

Teri

Brigance/Brosius in Texas

Just got back from Honey Grove, Fannin County, Texas. I found, without looking, several references to people with the Brigance family name:

Melvin R. Brigance marries Sarah R. Gambill on 1/4/1870 in Honey Grove. Melvin was born 10/7/1844 in Missouri.

Daisy Brigance worked in the J.L. Ware Cash House as their "milliner" - she was a sister of Dr. Daniels, one of the early settlers of the town of Honey Grove.

Hope this helps.

William Brigance was listed as a stonecutter in the 1880 business directory for Honey Grove.

That is ironic as Albert Carroll and his family did the same. They were in Lamar County in the 1860's and then moved onto Lamar County and then into Montague County.

That would be interesting as the Brosius family first settled in Fannin County (Honey Grove) in abt 1860 and left in 1867. They came back in abt 1875 and settled in Lamar County.

I'm researching this as my parents are from both counties.

Albert didn't die until 1896ish but he could have been infirm. I have two other deeds for J. A. Brigance but they are for Fannin County and they are for the late 1880's.

I'll see what kind of microfilm the LDS has for this information.

Teri

Maybe Albert was infirm or dead, and his son JF was pressing his mother's claim against Brosius. I would love to know what it was - Brosius son became City Marshall in Paris sometime in the late 1880s - early 1890s.

I thought the JF Brigance to actually be Albert Caroll Brigance because his wife's name was Julia and they lived in that area for a bit. But as I look at my Brigance genealogy Albert and Julia had a son John Franklin so I would assume JF Brigance to be him. I don't know why it would say his wife Julia/Julie. JF's wife at the time would be Mattie.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

There was a JF Brigance and his wife Julie that got a judgement in court against someone in Lamar County, Texas - that's just South of the Red River/Oklahoma border -the judgement is dated January 1879.

Any relation?

James Brigances' Rejected Claim - War of 1812

I recently got a copy of the above document from the Library of Virginia for James Brigance. This Claim was submitted by Hannah Turner Brigance, his wife, Layton Hunter, Reubin Douglas and Robert Looney. It mentions James' brother, Robert a couple of times and it is dated in 1837, after his death.

James and Robert served in Virginia during the War of 1812.

It is about 12 pages long and it's copied onto 14 x 17 paper.

If anyone would like a copy, please let me know.

Teri

Hi Linda,
As for family group sheets, I don't really have the capability right now because my main family tree info is lying wait in a "dead" computer and I have only just begun to re-enter info into my current FamilyTree Maker program. I do hope to retrieve my full family tree some day, but for now all I have is paper files. We descend form William b. 1750>John(m.Rebecca Stuart)b. 1782>James M. ( m. Kasander Malone Hensley, nee Thompson) b. 1833>Thomas Neal (m. Elsie Clifton) b. 1877>William Neal(m. Marguerite McKeever)b. 1901>Beverly Jean Ward (nee: Brigance)> to my brother Bill & myself. If you need info beyond that just ask. I talked to my brother tonight and he said to go ahead and give you his address. He suggested emailing him the info if possible. If not, email me at my hotmail address and put Brigance in the subject so I don't delete it with my junk mail. I would rather not post his street address on this site. Hope you understand.
Kay

Teri,
My brother is not a professional genealogist or researcher, he would only be doing it when time permitted because he is a BRIGANCE descendant. I believe he actually went to your Uncle Don's house and met with him briefly a couple of years ago...just decided to look him up because he was a Brigance and in his area.
If you become interested his email is : wwward@hotmail.com . I am the one mostly into the genealogy, but he is intersted and does have a Family Tree Maker. I don't know if it is loaded, but mine is in a "dead" computer so I am trying to re-enter things when time permits.
Email me or my brother, Bill, if you are interested in him going to the local library.
Kay
