Terri, another Brigman descendant sent your message to me and it was quite a shock to read. We are both from Solomon G. Brigman, son of this Solomon. Solomon G. is not in the estate names but he was born in 1815. A Benjamin is there who we have no record of unless he was a grandson. Isaac was born ca 1808. Catherine Holcombe married Diaclesian Holcombe, not Donelson Holcombe. We would like to read the magazine article but the URL is for magazine subscriptions. Do you know which specific magazine it was in? If you would like to contact me, my e-mail is bhmckay5743@juno.com

Okay, I'm intrigued . . . where might one find this newly "lighted" information??? Have you, perhaps, created you own informative webpage/site? Do you have a family tree on Ancestry.com?

If you'd prefer to continue this conversation off the Board, is your Yahoo address still active?

One last question (for now), do you know Jerry Merritt? We're "double cousins" thru the Brigmans and the Wards. Since he's a Brigman researcher, I thought you might have crossed paths.

Thank you for this information, Terri. I've found your name in several places while doing my Brigman research.

Are you familiar with the book, "Ancestors & Descendants of the Dearman-Deerman and Related Families" / by Velvo & Margaret Chaney, 1988? I believe that's where I found Mary Brigman hitched to Solomon Dearman and Fereby Dearman hitched to Isaac Brigman. "Fereby" seems to have been a popular name among the Dearman clan . . . many "Fereby" wives and daughters.

Thanks again. :-D
Actually, the Isaac Brigman who had the 1811 will was listed on the 1790 SC Census in Georgetown, but Fereby is not listed on the census. This Isaac was married to an Elizabeth before he ever married Fereby. There is no documented proof of Fereby's maiden name (unless you have it). The Isaac Brigman in Richmond county NC that you refer to were 2 additional Isaac Brigmans....there were 3 living at the same time.

Lisa James was correct that the Isaac Brigman with the 1811 will did have several sons who moved to IL around 1815. John, the oldest son and executor of his father's estate, did not manage the distribution of the will to the benefit of all the children. He left and took his brothers Isaac and Solomon with him. Solomon died around 1820 and Isaac died around 1835, both leaving no known issue.

Many Brigmans became respected Mormons, but this line is not one that is believed to be such.

Terri Brigman England

If you printed off the will, you can see that one of the 2 executors of his will is his wife -- FEREBY DEARMAN BRIGMAN. Isaac and Fereby appear in the 1790 Federal Census for Richmond Cy, North Carolina AND in the 1800 Federal Census for Marlboro Cy, South Carolina. His will was filed in Marlboro Cy, South Carolina on 15 Jun 1811 and recorded on 03 Oct 1811.

Seems highly unlikely that MY Isaac Brigman is YOUR Isaac Brigman. Mine was pushing up daisies in Sep 1811 and I don't think even Mormons marry ghosts . . . could be wrong, tho.

I'm interested in this Brigman family. They've been very elusive on the Census records. I have letters written 1882-1925 about these various family members.

Lula Brigman was a school teacher and a schoolmate chum of my grandmother, Lydia Grimes.

Joshua is her brother -- not sure who the rest of these people are, but would love to share info.

BRIGMAN Allie Kate only date listed 02/10/1893 age 6 years old
BRIGMAN Joshua L. only date listed 2/22/1925 age 74 years old
(Brother)
BRIGMAN Lula L. only date listed 7/17/1923 age 63 years old (Sister)
BRIGMAN S.A. 07/14/1825 09/25/1891 wife of Reverend R.G.
this is my husbands side of the family that i've been researching Robert was his great uncle...he was born in 1900s and died around 1950s and i'm thinking the were from either marlboro or red bluff. Tami the other lady posted here knows more about Robert himself she is married to Roberts great grandson i think ...lol anyway he had lots of children is my understanding and some were adopted by him. i think he later went on to marry a martha oxendine clark. Robert sister Susie is my husbands great grandmother. Robert and Susies' mother was Elizabeth Belle Hatcher married to William Brigman their father. If you need more info. I'll try to gather it this is just info off the top of my head hope it helps

I don't know too much about William Brigman after he moved to Anson, but I do know he lived in Richmond County before then. I have the following records in my notes.

1. This one shows who Margaret Brigman's father was:
1828: Richmond: Deed: NC, Book N, Page 92 John Mc D Shaw??? From Nancy Campbell and Others. Deed between William Brigman and Margaret his spouse, Nancy Campbell for Mary Hansel, Nepsy Sanders and Sarah Campbell Junior? Of the one part and John McD Shaw, $150, 100 a being granted to Colin Campbell deceased the 27 Nov 1793. Witness: Dill? McIntyre, Duncan McLaurin, Murdock Murphy, Peter Patterson, Archd C. Sinclair

2. This one indicates that William Brigman was the "son of Augustine Brigman's wife"...which is worded extremely strangely:
1825 NC: State vs. Wm.
George Washington Brigman

Does anyone have info on George Washington Brigman born 1820-1840 in SC? He was married in 1866 to Martha Ann Neal born in NC. They had several children one of which is Joseph Syrus Brigman (my ggrandfather) I have been unable to confirm who George's Mom and Dad were. George shows up on someone's Family tree under John Washington Strong Brigman but I am pretty sure this is a mistake. He is not a child of JWSB. Any info would be much appreciated

Crystal Brigman Keller

Eli (b.1862 d.1926) and Ura Harper Muse (b.1871 d.1963) were my paternal great-grandparents. My grandmother was their daughter, Augusta Roma "Romie" Muse Brigman. She married Robert Pinkney Brigman (b.1886 d.1927). His parents were W.R. (b.1856 d.1934) and Cora Carriker Brigman (b.1868 d.1944). All but my grandmother are buried in the Wheeler, Texas cemetary. Granny had two sons, Robert and William (still living), who went to the Masonic Home and School in Fort Worth a few years after their father's death. I am sure they remember Ura; I also have some stories about her from Granny. I am seeking information about the Muse, Brigman, Carriker, and Harper families.

Greetings,
Very glad to get your email. Joshua does tie into the William Brigman line in Richmond Co. NC if memory serves me right. William and Thomas Brigman, Jr. of the Revolutionary Era were male relatives but most possibly and probably not brothers. They appear to have migrated from Bertie Co., NC in mid 1700's. settling clsoe to the SC/NC border on the Pee Dee River. They migrated with other family groups that also migrated from Bertie co., area.
Thomas Brigman, Sr. is the first male in that line that made his way from England to Barbados to VA.and finally to Bertie, N.C.
If you will email me at hroyn@bellsouth.net I will be glad and to try answer your questions and search in possily a good bit more depth. I tried to find this link before he passed, but I am still trying to get more information. Most of my info has been census records and family history.

You may not have much information about Robert because he was a malcontent. I will give you more information off list if you want to correspond.

I GREATLY appreciate the information you have listed. My email is stormsurge at charter dot net. I would love to have collateral information if you would like to share.

Tami

I am SO excited to talk with you. I have my family's ledger book from 1830-1890 and one from 1811-1831. In the oldest one, it referenced William Brigman. So, I knew that my John Arant b.1825 married Margaret Brigman b.1816. I felt that this earlier Brigman was her father. I also had all of her relatives in the second ledger: John Griffin, Nepsy or Zepsy, John Brigman (witness on John Arant's marriage license in 1846), and Robert Brigman buried beside Margret Brigman and John Arant at Zoar Methodist. Robert Brigman b.1825. I would LOVE to share information on this line. I went to the Union Co, courthouse records of deeds and was able to validate Margaret's Brigman and Nepsy's father as William Brigman. In the records, it has in 1846 that William Brigman is deeding land to his beloved grandson, William Griffin (John Brigman signs as witness). I would LOVE to know about how Robert Brigman ties into the Brigman family tree. His children are named after Margaret Brigman and Nepsy etc. I am so excited. My second ledger is online at http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~arantledger
PLEASE PLEASE email me direct at hmarshville@aol.com. Can't wait to talk to someone on this line. The last fellow that I talked with lived in Mississippi or some other southern side where the family migrated to.
I was hoping that someone had a family bible and could relate some information on my John Arant's parents. I know his line back to 1733 but can not correct peg his correct parents.
Also, in his ledger, he writes the birth of another family member. I think that it is a member of the Arant side, not the Brigman side. He writes Nancy Carpenter Feb 1829. The Carpenter family says that she disapeared. So, I fear that she died. William Griffin and Nancy Carpenter's birthdates along with Margaret Brigman's birthdate are the only birthdates mentioned in the ledger.

Sincerely,
Julie

That is so amazing. I hope you that you will look at all of those people that you mentioned in my family ledger. You will find many of them. I am so excited. How thrilling!!! That is exactly what I was looking for. I hope that you will cut/paste that information onto my ledger guest book page.
Also, Margaret Brigman b.1816, sister of Nepsy Brigman Griffin, married John Arant b.1825. Margaret Brigman had a son out of wedlock years prior to marrying John Arant. In fact, that illegimate daughter was close in age to John Arant. Margaret Brigman named this child, Margaret Emmeline. If I recall correctly, this child married John W Threatt and is also buried at Zoar Methodist church on the NC/SC stateline. I grew on John Arant's homeplace and where all these people lived.
You will find John Griffin in the ledger in a list of congregation members around 1861-1866.

Yes, I know of this illegimate person. I had a connection on that line who said that the woman is buried in Marshville Cemetery which is down the road from my home. Amazing since I too came from the area on the other side of the county. The lady was researching the Brigman and Robert Brigman particularly. She said that some of the Brigmans had autism or some type of hereditary disease. Her own children had it. John Arant who married Margaret Brigman lost two children under the age of 4 and 5 years of age. I wondered why and if it was due to this genetic disease that she mentioend. She said that the children usually die under 5 years of age. John Arant remarried after Margaret Brigman's death to Nancy Isabelle Neal and had four healthy children with her.

Jluie

I can not say. You see, my ancestor, John Arant b.1825, married Margaret Brigman. When she died, he married Nancy Isabelle Neal. I descend from his second marriage. I only researched Brigman to find some connection to my John Arant. It was said that he stay with the Brigman's for a time and married one of the girls. I could not understand why he stayed with them for a time since he had Arant members around him.
Margaret Brigman's father was William Brigman, Sr. of Anson Co, NC prior to 1842 formation of Union Co, NC. His wife was Margaret Campbell.
As to the Brigman girls, well, I have two examples of Brigmans in this line having children out of wedlock. Margaret Brigman b.1816 who married my John Arant b.1825 already had a child when she married John Arant. Her name was Margaret Emmeline Brigman, but later in life, she took John Arant's last name. She was illegimate. She was almost the same age as John Arant when he married her mother.
Another was a daughter of Robert Brigman, another family member of Margaret Brigman's. She had a child out of wedlock and moved to Marshville, NC where she is buried. I believe she married a Moree.

Now, to answer your question. William Brigman, Sr. of Anson Co, NC appears there from the early census. Variations on name: Bregmean, Bregmin, Brigmean, Bregmen.
He had a son called William Brigman, Jr. His grandchildren were also named in his honor. Zepsy Brigman married John Griffin of Union Co, NC and named a son William Griffin. This is what I found in Union Co, NC deeds. William Brigman is leaving some land to William Griffin, his beloved grandson.
I would say that you have some connection to William Brigman, but there may also be some illegimatacy in children OR Susie was married to a Brigman and then married the Saunders. Check NC and SC for any William Brigman. I believe that there is one in Marion, Dillion, or Union Co, SC. Maybe one different from my William Brigman of Anson Co, NC. Good hunting

1828: Anson:
Grant: William Brigman, land grant No 2959, Anson, 227 acres surveyed 27 Feb 1828, Book 138, Entry 993, Page 346, Chain bearers Mathew and John Griffin, Joining Elisah Stack nd Joshua Walter, Grant Issued 15 March 1830…”supposed to be in Hollamons line?….to the state

Where did you find this entry? Anson Co Courthouse? Raleigh? Yes, these people lived on the stateline of NC/SC in formerly Anson Co, NC. After 1842 formation of Union Co, they are found in Union Co instead of Anson Co. I have John Arant's congregation lists of church members, etc. I also want you to know that Robert Brigman is buried beside Margaret Brigman Arant at Zoar Methodist on the stateline of NC/SC. How is Robert Brigman tied into them? Evidently family but where was he before 1850 census of Chesterfield Co, Sc. Why was he with Mary Threatt. The Threatt are tied into them somehow. Margaret Brigman had an illegimate daughter, Margaret "Emmeline". John Arant was not the father, physically impossible due to his age and wife's. She was much older than he. Also, we know. Anyway, Emmeline took John Arant's name after many years. She married John W. Threatt also buried at Zoar Methodist. That family knew her as Emmeline Arant, BUT she was not. John Arant left everything to his biological child with Margaret Brigman...Nancy Isabelle Arant Starnes, wife of Babel Alexander Starnes of Union Co., NC. Some called her Belle Starnes. Anything that was belonging to Margaret would have been solely hers, photos, bibles. John Arant had a family bible with Margaret Brigman which went to their daughter. When John Arant remarried Nancy Isabelle Neal (different person than daughter), they began a new bible. Nancy Isabelle Neal was born in 1846. I descend from her and John Arant's union.

Descendents of Nancy Isabelle Arant Starnes, daughter of Margaret Brigman, are still in Union Co, NC today. Baxter Starnes, public accountant in Monroe, NC is of that line. Also, FYI, Nancy Isabelle "Sissy Belle" Arant Starnes is buried on Starnes Cemetery church road in Union Co, NC near Hwy 207 and the stateline....near Trinity Methodist Church.

I am curious about your William Brigman. More later,
Julie

Bless you! Bless you! I am more than excited to talk to you. How wonderful to finally find someone on this line. I did have someone email me this year that Margaret Brigman Arant b.1816 to John Arant was the daughter of Margaret Campbell and William Brigman, Sr. of Anson. I proved the relationship to William Brigman, Sr. b/c of a deed in Union Co, NC courthouse where he is named grandfather of Nepsy Brigman's (sister of Margaret Brigman Arant)son, William Griffin. William Brigman, Sr. leaves land to his beloved grandchild with John Brigman, a witness. John Brigman is also on file as bondsman to Margaret Brigman Arant's marriage to John Arant b.1825. John Brigman is a brother I assumed. I think that I am correct.
This marriage license original is kept in the new Union Co Courthouse, NC between John Arant and Margaret Brigman and John Brigman, bondsman. They married in 1846. I assumed that her father died before 1846 b/c John Brigman signed for her. I think that I am correct. Additionally, there is another member of this family that you must know. Robert Brigman who appears in Chesterfield Co, SC in 1850 leaving with Mary Threatt, an old lady. Robert Brigman is bondsman on Nepsy Brigman's license of marriage to John Griffin. You will find John Griffin near William Brigman, Sr. in census reports. Margaret Brigman and John Brigman and Robert Brigman all attended Zoar Methodist church on the NC/SC stateline of Chesterfield Co, SC and Union Co, SC. This area is where William Brigman, Sr. lived.

I am very excited by your last entry. You see, I have studied William Brigman, Sr. closely b/c my John Arant's parents are illusive. He descends from Peter Arant b.1749, revolutionary war veteran of Anson Co, NC and later Chesterfield Co, SC. The family is well researched but John's correct parents are illusive. John Arant b.1825 has two surviving grandchildren. YES, grandchildren. He remarried after wife Brigman died in 1876. It is clearly said that John Arant stayed with the Brigman's for a time and married one of the Brigman girls. So, I could not understand why an Arant w/ family members living all around would stay w/ a Brigman. Now, I think that I understand.

I have two ledgers. Check the later one of John Arant and Elijah ARant 1831-1890 at http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~arantledger. The early one is from 1811-1831. That ledger is of Aaron Arant b.1786. Aaron Arant's went to KY in 1831, but I have copies of his ledger. Aaron Arant mentions William Brigman in the ledger. Aaron was a keeper of the peace, justice of the peace and surveyor with Philip Arant. I suspected that this William Brigman was father of Margaret b/c otherwise how would John Arant and Margaret meet each other. I proved correct at Union Co courthouse w/deeds.

Now, your last entry on Walters and Elijah Stack. GREAT work. I found in Union Co, deeds that William Brigman land bordered Joshua Walters of Anson Co and Stack. Now, in the ledger, JOhn Arant comes to the merchant store with Philip Walters and Joshua Walters. Also, Joshua Walters (man same age as William Brigman, SR.)signs for credit for Richard Arant b.1817, JOhn Arant's brother. Also, Joshua Walters also has John Arant sign as his witness on selling of land in Union Co. I suspect that John Arant lived with Joshua Walters b/c in 1850 census, a Nancy Watters/Walters is living with Richard Arant b.1817 in Chesterfield Co, SC. I think that JOhn Arant and Richard lives w/Walters who were family of some sort. Next door, William Brigman lived. This land was where I grew up. We are talking about from Hwy 601 and Lanes Creek (fire dept there) running down Landsford Road to Hwy 207/Wolf Pond Rd. These people and their descendents still live there. MOre later, Must talk hmarshville@aol.com

Julie Please let's talk more about Robert Brigman and other connections

Hi Lynne, I just started researching my family and found your post. My name is JoAnn Brigman, my Dad was Joe Neely Brigman. Rita is my younger sister. Ella Mae was my grandmother. She died in 1954. I may have some info on the Matthews side that would be useful. Along with Ella Mae, 5 or 6 of the Matthews family were buried in the cemetary @ Providence Presbyterian Church in Mecklenburg County. If you pull up mecklenburg cemeteries on line, they actually show the names and dates of the people buried there. I will be glad to share any info with you that I have, just let me know if you get this. jobrigman@aol.com
