By the way, Sidney's mother, 8th husband, and grandmother are all buried in San Diego. I'd have to look up the name of the cemetery to tell you which one, but you might be able to find something quicker on the Internet through Interment.com or Find-a-grave. The 8th husband's name was Runkey, Charles H.
Maria or Mary L. (Colcord) Runkey was apparently quite a fixture around San Diego, being something of a political activist pushing for the upholding of laws and preservation of property from unscrupulous developers. She arrived there about 1902-3, divorced husband #6 (R D McCall, about 1902-4, who remarried in Calif. before returning to Denver) & married husband #7 (P Hughes, about 1903-4) & had a daughter born about 1903-4, divorced husband #7 (P Hughes, about 1904-5), and married husband #8 (Chas. H Runkey, about 1905-9). I'm still looking for info on the divorces and marriages.

Sidney died in Denver. I have info somewhere that indicates which cemetery he's in, but I don't recall the name of the place offhand.

Sidney never married, so far as I can tell. He seems to have worked for the City of Denver in various capacities, showing up on the census as messenger boy, brick worker, & streetcar maintenance worker. His grandmother, Maria Elizabeth (Clay) Colcord, may have raised him after 1890 because Sidney was found on the 1900 census in her dwelling listed as grandson (age 16 I think), while his mother was living nearby with her 4th husband and the 2 children from that marriage.

Sidney's mother had it kind of rough after the deception and fraud perpetrated upon her by her first husband - Lee Briley was her second marriage. She lost her eldest son to cholera or something in Sept 1883 when the child was about 2 or 2-1/2 years old. She was married a total of 8 times. The husbands she didn't divorce predeceased her. She attempted to divorce the 1st guy, but nobody was able to find him to serve papers on him when she found out he was using an alias, and then he died of smallpox in late 1882. Her 4th husband was shot to death in the line of duty as a Denver police officer in 1899, and the 8th husband passed away around 1929 (she died in 1945).

I have nothing on Henrietta other than a birth state, Iowa, and approximate birth year, 1858, which I gleaned from Census - 1860 - High Point - Decatur - Iowa and Census - 1870 - High Point - Decatur- Iowa. That's it so you know more than I do! I had lightening strikes nearby delete all my info a couple of times; fortunately I had paper copies and also now have 2 back ups on thumb drives. Otherwise I'd be sunk. Where did Sidney die? I'm surprised my MIL didn't know anything about him but her mother, Dorothy, saw her mother get shot and killed and seemed to disconnect from that point on. She did get married to Ray Theron Marvel first and Earnest Hartman third with 4 marriages total. She didn't parent her children well and things were difficult for them and so on. So family info was not passed down very well. I just downloaded Family Tree Maker to go along with Ancestry though PAF is my main genealogy program. I've been out of the loop so long and there is so much more available that it is almost overwhelming and I'm not sure where to start again.

I'm also interested in the VanDoren / Van Dorien names. Henrietta Briley (Lee Briley's sister) married a Vandoren (sp?) while still living in Kansas or shortly before the Briley family left Iowa. They all seem to have migrated to the same area, with burials in Oceanside or Oceanview Cemetery. I did find out from paperwork in Denver that Sidney's middle name was Clinton, not Colcord. He never married, died around 1953 with less than $100 in personal assets. A half sister in San Diego was listed as a relative in his estate papers, but offhand I don't recall the name that was given.

I am sorry to hear you've been under the weather. It's heck to put up with that kind of thing. I, too, have been inactive with my genealogy research, but it's because my computer was hit hard by a power surge that fried the components, such as the hard drive and the power module, and popped some capacitors. I haven't been able to find a replacement program that I like, or get my old program to work with the newer operating system on my replacement computer.

I'm so sorry I haven't replied sooner. I've been ill and have not been able to work on any genealogy for several years. Please let me know if you still need anymore information. I vaguely remember speaking to my mother-in-law, Marlyn, about this but she knew nothing of a first wife or any other children either. Her grandmother was the one shot and killed. It had terrible and long-lasting consequences on the family that they are still dealing with today. Again I'm very sorry about not replying sooner. I hope you get this!!

I am also descended through Laura Belle Briley Jordan. Her daughter was Della Marie Jordan who married Walter Ernest Sanders, Sr. Marie and Ernest were my grandparents. I assume you are a descendant of either Ray or Roy(Ike)?

I have very old photographs of Ray, Roy and Marie + one or two of Ezra Whitman Jordan and Laura Belle. Would be happy to share. I also have photos of several "Jordans" but I don't know exactly who they are.

I visited Friendly Grove cemetery in 2010, as well as Briley Chapel and have photos I can share.

Please email me and perhaps we can share information.
jandini1@hotmail.com

My biological father (whom I did not know), was Howard Vernon Briley. His father was Howard Briley. I have enough info to trace back to a John Briley (Howard's father), who served in the civil war (union side). John was born in Illinois, and served w/the Illinois militia(?). The records show that he saw combat during the civil war. His mother and father are listed as having been born in Germany. These records are pretty accurate, but Germany? Big surprise to me; I always thought that the name was Irish. If it's German, I have some amends to make to the hubs; Striebich - no doubt where that came from!

Tracey,
You are actually in the same family as Beverly Briley, but
not the same line.
William Briley and John Jackson Briley were brothers, John
came into Davidson County and raised his family and it seems
that your William chose Robertson County, and he is the father
of your Emory Hiram Briley.
If you have a family tree chart you can chart their relationship and see how close you come to Beverly and
what relationship you are to him. I do not have that chart
on my mine.

I'm just getting started... but I think you may be right about his origins. I will find what I can.. I have found an Andrew in old census records from Kansas with his same approx year of birth, but I have lost track of him from there at age 11.. I will keep trying though. The Corp of Engineers are curious how he got here or if it is just a memorial to him. Because this Dam and Spillway construction was completed in 1956. We hope its just a memorial. If not the Corp will move him. I hope to find out something on him so that we know more.

Wow, that's real interesting. I am almost 100% sure that is not my Briley family. I THINK I can trace the family at least when they came from Marshall to Texarkana. And especially since the death date is 1960 -- that kinda eliminates the connection to my Briley side.

There is a line of African-American Briley's in Texarkana too.

Is this th only grave/headstone across from the tackle shop? Can you see the grave by just driving by the spillway, or is it isolated.

This is very interesting.

Jamie, Leona was my mother. She died in 1997. My father, Ersie, died in 1945.
Dersie was my half-sister, as was her sister, Wanda. Both of them are dead.
Dad had other children by his marriage to Elsie (Babe): Ersie, Bill, Harry, Johnnie. His oldest son was Ronnie, but I don't know who Ronnie's mother was. It may have been Babe.
My grandparents died before my birth and no one is living who can tell me about the Briley.

You have another uncle who was born in 1935, same parents. Ersie and Babe were separated or divorced, but got together at least once and she became pregnant. She gave birth by C section, her second, and died within three months.

This child is Tom McGann. He was adopted by a family in Ohio. He finally looked me up about ten years ago.

Your grandmother Dersie, and great-aunt Wanda, knew Tom, but Bill, the next youngest above Tom, only met him about two years before Bill's death.

I am married, a retired Sheriff's Captain, currently a Baptist pastor. Sharon and I have three daughters and seven grandchildren.

We live in Columbia Heights, MN, which is by Minneapolis.

Where do you live?

David Briley
