Jacob Brill and Peter Brill from Bavaria around Dayton, Ohio

Trying to go back a little. I am 57 and live in Minneapolis, MN. My father, Morton, was born in Minneapolis in 1923. My grandfather, Louis, was born in Russia in 1894. His father's name was Abraham and his father's name was Moses (no, we're not Scandinavian - Ha!)Moses would have been born around the 1840's.

I was recently in Prague and saw a list of Holocaust victims from Prague and it included 12 Brill's, all with Czech first names.

I do not believe the name is a shortened version of anything but wonder if there are others out there with similar experiences. I also know of Finnish Brill's.

Good evening.

My great grandmother was Mary Ann Brill. She was married to Christian Brill in New York. Christian and Mary Ann lived in College Point, New York. Christian served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Mary Ann was a Sanderson, daughter of John and Elizabeth of Rhode Island, where she was born. I have always been told that Mary Ann had a DAR marker on her gravesite where she rests in Flushing Cemetery in Queens. I have not been able to confirm the family's involvement yet in the American Revolutionary War, but always have hoped to confirm this word of mouth family history.

There are more than 30 Brills buried in the Duboyce Cemetery, West Bolton, Brome Co., Quebec, Canada. I found these cemetery records online.

One of the listings is for:

"Anna (Knowlton) Brill, wife of wife of John Brill," who is buried in the Duboyce Cemetery.

I believe that Hannah was born 1794 in Columbia co. New York.
I found the Will for Phillip Brill in Delaware Co, New York, dated 19 Aug 1839 and probated 14 Nov 1844. It lists his wife; Anna and his daughters; Polly, Amy, Cynthia, Hannah, Betsey, and Phebe. The witnesses were Sthephen VanSchoyck of Tompkins, Stephen VanSchoyck Jr. of Tompkins, George W. Pellett of Masonville and Phillip J. Pellett of Masonville.
A man named Herman Demonstoy posted information on the Pedigree Resource File (LDS) which states that Hannah had sisters name, Mrs. Heath, Mrs. Mills, and Mrs. Pellett. He said he received the information from his aunt, Inez Stratton. I found a record listing marriage for Hannah to Lewis Demenstoy 6 Aug 1816 in Milton Saratoga, New York. He died about 1828 and she remarried, this time to William West 1829.
The Mrs. Mills must be Polly (Mary) who was married to Henry Mills 24 Dec 1806 in Middleburg, Schoharie, New York. The Mrs. Heath is Cynthia who is living in 1855 and 1860 census records in Masonville, with her daughter and listed as Cynthia Heath. The Mrs. Pellett is Amy who is on the 1860 census in Tompkins, Delaware, New York. The daughter, Phebe was married to Lot Cook 15 Oct 1816 in New York.
Phillip Brill and his wife are buried in the China Road Cemetery, Deposit, Delaware, New York. In 1850 Anna is living with George W. Pellett and his family in Tompkins.

Phillip Brill was probably on the 1790 Census in Columbia Co., New York in Hillside, on the 1810 in Schoharie Co., New York in Middleburg, on the 1820 Census in Delaware Co., New York in Tompkins, living next door to Henry Mills the husband of Mary Brill, and on the 1830 Census in Delawre Co., New York in Tompkins.

I am looking for info on the Johannes Brill family from Orferode, Germany. They emigrated to America with Johann Franz Hofsommer & family (who were from Germerode) in 1847. I am not sure of the name of Johannes' wife but he had a son named John who was born about 1830. After arriving in America, they settled in Archbald, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.

I have my grandmother's notebook from a 1950 Brill reunion. On page 71, Hannah Brill was b 7/8/1796 and married to Benjamin Sherman, II (b 12/29/1798) on 9/22/1823.

They had 6 children, one of which was Maria Sherman born 6/29/1831

Maria Sheman married Egbert Rogers (b 9/15/1829) on 12/10/1851. Maria died 4/20/1910. Her husband, Egbert, never returned from the Civil War. They had two children and Maria's second marriage was to James H. ASby (b 11/17/1847) married on 2/23/1875 - no offspring. James' date of death is listed as 10/17/1926

I am looking for anyone related to myself. My fathers name is Lewis, and he was born 12/24/35. I believe his father ( my grandfather ) was named victor, he was a musician. I think he lived in connecticut. He left my father and grandmother ( Lee Brill ), about 1941. They lived in ft. apache, the bronx before moving to flushing queens. Anyone with info please forward, I would be grateful.

I am helping a friend with his genealogy. He has Mary Brill, b. 4 Nov 1786 in Dutchess county, New York, d. 22 Dec 1868 in Delaware county, New York. She was married 24 Dec 1806 in Middleburg, Dutchess, New York to Henry Mills. Does anyone have an idea who her parents might be? I have been checking a number of records in the last 2-3 months with no luck.

It was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David B. Sleight on Overlook Road, Dutchess County, NY. That's in Poughkeepsie (where I was born). 95 members attended. Let me know what additional info you would like to have - I could scan the pages from the book and send if you would like.

This is a response to Jean Ratkovich's post of Feb 2003 requesting information on FILOPINA LOUISE BRILL, b. 1874, IN.
Her father was HENRY GEORGE BRILL (HEINRICH GEORG FREELS) b. 2 May in Hanover and/or Schwei, Oldenburg, Germany. One WFT file states "1822"; however, 1819 or 1820 is more likely, because his age is consistent through three censuses (1850, 1860 & 1870). Henry was the son of Gerhard Freels and Gesche M. Schwarting. The name "Freels" apparently morphed to "Brill" at the time of or shortly after Henry's emigration, since it appeared as "Brill, Brill and Bril" in the above censuses.
In September 1850 30 yr. old "Henry Brill" was a laborer and living with a German family in HARRISON, VIGO CO., IN. On 21 April 1851 he would marry "CATHARINE E. (ELIZABETH) TOLLE" in Vigo Co. In that same 1850 Census 20 yr. old "Elizabeth Tully," is boarding with/working for a near by family. With her is 20 yr. old "Christina Tully", a possible twin, sister or cousin. Both girls were born in Germany.
Catharine Elizabeth Tolle was born about 1830/31 in Hessia, Germany. It's plausible that her family name was the German "Tolle" as it appears in the Indiana Marriage Records and not the "Tully/Tulley" as it later became.
By June 1860 the family has moved to CASS, CLAY CO., IN where Henry, 41, b. Hanover, Germany, and Elizabeth, 29, b. Hessia, Germany, are living with their sons, "GEORGE F. W. BRILL," 8, and "WILLIAM H. BRILL," 11 mos.
Ten years later, in June 1870 "Henry and Elizabeth Bril" are living in VAN BUREN, CLAY CO., IN. In addition to the two boys they have added "ANNA BRIL," 8; "MARY BRIL," 6; "CHARLES BRIL," 4 and "LIZZIE BRIL," (Melissa) 2.
According to WFT and Rootsweb files Henry died in 1876, probably in HARMONY, CLAY CO., IN where the widowed "Elizabeth Brill," 50, is found in the 1880 Census. 20 yr. old "WILLIE Brill" is working the farm. With them are MARY BRILL, 16; CHARLY BRILL, 13, "PENIE BRILL," (Filopena/Philopena), 9, and "CAROLINE BRILL," 6.
Elizabeth lived on until 1913. In the 1910 Census she is found living with her widowed daughter Filopena's Urwin family in BRAZIL, CLAY CO., IN.
The above is a compilation of on-line sources. None of those sources contain all of the children. Most only contain the two oldest boys and Charles. Someone should trace the girls' lines down through 1930 and beyond. Barbara Hays Cook, Sacramento, CA

I have no further information, but there is probably much more out there. I just like finding families, and what I sent you took just about 15 minutes last night. I went to the 1850 Census, entered "Wisconsin" and "Harriet" Brill", b. 1842 +2yrs., and there she was with her entire family. Then did the same for the 1860 Census. It's usually not that easy. In this case the enumerator used her actual, given name as well as her father's, and her birth date was about correct. You could probably trace out this family to the deaths of the parents, and follow each sibling down through the censuses; however, you'll need census access to do it from home. The men will be easier than the women. You know that they were in Sauk and Monroe Counties, so search each county site also. Have fun, Barb Hays Cook

Harriet's parents are EGBERT and ALMIRA BRILL. Egbert was born about 1819 and Almira about 1822, both in New York. In the 1850 Census the family was living in Adams, Sauk Co., Wisconsin, and Egbert was a "blacksmith". In the 1860 Census they lived in Wilton, Monroe Co., Wisconsin, and he is listed as "farmer." The children, all born in WI, are as follows: Harriet, 1842; Thomas, abt. 1845; "C.M./Cormoall" (prob. Cornwall or Cornwell), abt. 1846; Almina/Armina, abt. 1850; Emma, abt. 1852. Hope this helps. HENRY J. BRILL, born about 1802 at Yellow Springs, Hampshire County, (West) Virginia and died in August 1884 at Gore, Frederick County, Virginia.

His wife, MARY ANN GODLOVE, born 9 April 1808; died 20 October 1866.

and their daughters: SARAH E. BRILL (born ca. 1845) and MARY F. BRILL (born ca. 1846-48) .

I have sons Alfred, Lemuel, and Hampton. I do not know if this was all of the children.

I have the information on this family that is in Maud Pugh, “Capon Valley: It’s [sic] Pioneers and Their Descendants, 1698-1940.”

I have a few corrections to this post. You listed Hartley Brill as having a daughter Bertha Maude Brill which you said used her middle name in the 1900 census. Her legal name was Martha Maude Brill, DOB 18 Jan 1873, Terre Haute, Indiana. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage, 23 May 1931, Scotland, Jasper, Missouri. I have the death certificate. She was the daughter of my g-g-grandfather. The confusion may be that Hartley's son Orville Austin Brill, misspelled Orval on a census sheet, had a daughter Bertha Mildred Maude Brill DOB 18 Jan 1918. She is still living.

My Dad is descended from Soloman William Brill born ABT 1808 in Poughkeepsie, NY. I show that his parents were Henry I. Brill and Elizabeth Dennis. Thank you so much for these corrections and additional information. We are fifth cousins once removed through Elizabeth B. Hartley who married George Washington Brill. Elizabeth was the niece of my 4th great grandmother, Martha Bunting Hartley who married John Kester. (Elizabeth Bunting was their mother who married Jonathan Hartley, and after Jonathan died, married to Stacy Paxson.)

I have recently received copies of many photographs and bible pages for the family of Dr. Aaron Hartley, who was the brother of Martha Bunting Hartley and your ancestor, David Bunting Hartley. Also, some copies of what appear by the penmanship to be some type of original Monthly Meeting record.
