Hi,
I know this post is 10 years old and you probably found the info you needed, I am from James and Rebecca, also. My dad James Morgan) grew up in Kanab, his grandmother is James' daughter. Would love to chat about what you have found the last 10 years. I would also love a picture of George and Hannah's grave (they are buried in NY), as well as more than just dates on Jame's siblings.
Cadence
Las Vegas
cades2u@yahoo.com, please email me, and I will send you my number

I am a supposed descendant of a George Brinkerhoff, his son is like my 4th great-grandfather. I am looking for proof between the two, some sketchy research has been done. This James supposedly had a sister, Catherine or Caroline, also from NY. I can send you more info. I am definitely a descendant of James Brinkerhoff, but would like more proof of parentage. I know that the George, that I have as his father was married to Hannah Degraff, and I know that they are definitely buried in NY, look on findagrave.com for this info. James converted to Mormon in NY and moved west with them, while the rest of his family stayed behind. He is buried in Glendale, UT. I would like more info on the family he left behind in NY. I have supposed names of his parents and siblings and their death dates, but like I said, I have no real proof, would love some christening records to prove the relationships.
Cadence, Las Vegas
cades2u@yahoo.com

George Brinkerhoff Jr., b.1871, son of George M. Sr., lived Sangamon Co., IL

I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “George M. Brinkerhoff Jr. – Springfield, Ill.”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Springfield (Sangamon Co.) IL and he looks to be about age 25.

I found George M. Brinkerhoff and family in 1910 Springfield, IL census, showing father age 71, with son George M., Jr., age 40, and daughters Marion B., 41 and Bessie N., 32. Son’s birthdate was Nov 1871. George remained single throughout 1920 and 1930 censuses, and was employed as a broker in real estate.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to the Brinkerhoff family of Springfield, IL.

John; as a perfect stranger (but as a Brinkerhoff relative) I ask you to humor me. Does that book list Joris Dircksoen's children? I want to be sure I have the correct names at least. Who are you descended from if I may ask?
(And I do wish I could pronounce those names).
Looking forward to any answer.
Thank you.
Cousin Dorimae

According to Ted Brinkerhoff's book apparently so. The Brinkerhoff line descends from Hendrick (NJ) and the NY Brinckerhoff line from Abraham. I don't descend from Aeltje, so it doesn't matter, or Abraham.

From many records I looked at the eldest son Derick, twin to my 8th gggrandfather, Henrick, was killed by Indians. So Hendrick, Abraham & Aeltje only had chldren? The first Aeltje died young & they named their youngest daughter Aeltje, also; she married 1st, Cornelius Mathews then William van Cownhoven after Cornelius died. Does this jibe with your records at all?
I just may die never getting this straighted out!!!

Dorimae

The entry is classified as 19X11 Charles Buist Brinkerhoff, born 27 December 1933 at Spring Lake, NJ. At Trenton, NJ on 3 September 1960 he married Joan Noakers, born 18 Jul 1939 in Scotland.

Interesting as he was born same year as me and she same year as my wife.

They had two children: Eric Willism Brinkerhoff, and Karen May Brinkerhoff.

No information on Joan Noakers as for parents and information for her husband only goes back to his grandfather. Their children were born 1962 and 1965.

John
Hi thanks for the quick response.

I have had a wee think about the names not being listed and it occurred to me that Joan was known as Noakes befor she was adopted as this was her parents name. Her name would have been changed to Irwin or Corrigan once she moved to Edinburgh to live with her adopted parents.

Dawn

Eleanor H. Brinckerhoff Obituary, CT, 22 Oct 2010

Former New Canaan resident, Eleanor H. Brinckerhoff of Norwalk, died Thursday, Oct. 14 at her home. She was a former resident of Norholt Drive before moving to Ledgebrook Condominiums many years ago. She was 95. A retired title searcher, Ms. Brinckerhoff was a naval lieutenant in WW II, serving with the women's branch of the U.S. Navy, the WAVES. A Stamford native, she was a graduate of the U. of CT where she majored in animal husbandry. For many years Ms. Brinckerhoff served as property manager for the New Canaan Town Players. Handy with a hammer, saw or screwdriver, Ms. Brinckerhoff helped make many productions successful by constructing sets and scenery. She delighted in searching for all manner of items that might be useful in some upcoming play. One day, a stray cat wandered into the Powerhouse Theatre at Waveny Park where the Town Players had set up shop with considerable help from Ms. Brinckerhoff. She adopted the cat and named it Makita after the hand drill she was using. Throughout her life she read constantly. Her interests were eclectic. Ms. Brinckerhoff's library contained books on everything from architecture to zoology and everything in between. She read local and national newspapers, clipped articles and made notes in the margins. She loved animals of all sorts and made it a point to learn about them. Over the years, horses, chickens, dogs and cats were part of her life. She contributed generously to humane causes. She also traveled extensively, sometimes on organized tours geared toward education and sometimes with friends.

Taken from The Brin(c)kerhoff's of America 1641 - 1981 by Theodore Brinckerhoff:
Jesse, son of James Brinkerhoff, b Sempronius, NY, d Glendale UT and Rebecca Hannah Hawk, b Park C, IN, d Price UT was born in St George, UT, d Huntington, UT. John Clifford (as it appears on the records) was one of 14 children b Huntington UT 1907, d Emery Co, UT 1932. Mother was Violet Leona Allred.
According to these records, there was no son with the name James. The names that appear as children of John Clifford/Violet Allred are: Parlan Jay, Jessie May, Rosalee, John E., Hazel and the twins Myrna Fay and Georgia Kay.
Would it be possible that one of these children was AKA James? If you could give me James's wife's name, it might help me locate James easier.

Wish I had something to offer, but I'm trying to knock down my brick wall: My ggrandfather was Charles Burns Dickinson, b. NY 1806, son of John Dickinson and ? Brinkerhoff - the latter family lore. I'm hunting for his ancestry. He was a merchant in NJ, then Mobile AL. He m. Maria Louise Mundy Dec 1836 - I have lots on her line I'd be happy to share. Do you have anything that might fit this? Thanks.

I believe our connection goes to Theodorus born 26 April 1776. Your ancestor, Jacobus, was a brother to my ancestor, Johannes (family had Johannes, Jacobus, Adriana, and Ditmas). If you have not found the monograph by Andrew Provost, Jr. on the family, it is on line at Heritage Quest. It was published in 1954, but is quite well accepted. I used some of the information to establish a DAR link. It is titled: Cayler Family.

If you have information on any of the female lines such as the Debevoise and Polhemus, I would like to be able to get that information and share anything I have on the family.

Concerning Brinkerhoffs in America book...my grandmother was Mary Agnes Brinkerhoff, daughter of Abraham Schoonmaker Brinkerhoff, born in a Woodridge house that now houses the Woodridge Public Library. My mother and I went there years ago to see the house and were offered an opportunity to peruse a copy of "B in A." A numeric system allows one to find ancestors very quickly simply by taking the last digit of your known relative's family number.

Dear Betty,
Your post is an old one, but I am hoping I can still reach you. I am from another branch of the Brinkerhoff family. My great-grandmother was Susannah Steinle Brinkerhoff, daughter of Richard Brinkerhoff. Richard published a book on the Brinkerhoffs that recorded the history of the family from Joris Dirksen through 1891 and has records of the family reunion of the big reunion that happened in the late 1800s. Have you seen this book and can we exchange information? I would love to find if you have information that I don't have. Please contact me at DrDeborah@aol.com. Thanks, Deborah

Thank you for the recent Brinkerhoff information. I am interested in the Brinkerhoff's from the Gettysburg, PA area. Particularly the 2 Brinkerhoff siblings that married into the Bercaw (Burcaw, Brokaw) family of the same area. I believe one of the names may have been George also. I know there was a Brinkerhoff homestead in the area at the time of the Civil War. Anyone have any more on this group?

Thank you very much.

That was most helpful.

It would seem from the materials that you provided that if William and Sarah had any other children, they are unknown. While family histories sometimes miss information, I would guess that those who put together the lineage information you quoted had better access to the original sources than I. So if there's something out there on the central problem
(building a better child list for William and Sarah) I'm not likely to have success without visiting the primary records sources. An item for a later day.

The actual problem I'm working on is trying to identify two Layton women, Rachel S. (bc.1798) and Elizabeth, (bc. 1805). These are only known to me from an unpublished family genealogy (no author, no date, but in a line that traced back to Long Island). Other elements of the family history check out satisfactorily, but I'm unable to locate these two individuals in sources available on the net. There are a number of possible candidates for their parents, Most I've been able to eliminate. William and Sarah are one of three remaining candidates. reasonably certain that Rachel and Elizabeth belong to one of these three, but the lack of a child list (or a good explanation why only the one child Sarah is known) prevents me from ruling William and Sarah in or out.

At anyrate, I do appreciate the information. This seems to be one of those "hard problems" where the core informaiton needed, if it exists, is not readily available.

Thanks

Bill

In reply to message from Bill Willis.
According to the information in the book "The Brin(c)kerhoff's of America 1641 - 1981" by Theodore Brinckerhoff, there appears the following:
(Please note that your ancestor is from the Brinckerhoff line of the family}

Entry on Daniel Brinckerhoff, born Flushing NY 26 Oct 1734 - died 28 Sep 1781 married Flushing NY 3 Apr 1756 Ann Monfoort Daughter of Abraham & Sarah (Luyster) Monfoort born 3 Jul 1732 died 8 Oct 1793. Children (Brinckerhoff): Hendrick, Abraham D., Jacobus, Sarah, Jacob, Lammetia, Daniel, Peter and Aletta.
Entry on Sarah Brinckerhoff: Sarah Brinckerhoff Layton, born Long Island NY 17 Mar 1764 married Brookville NY William Layton, son of David & Helena (Van Wyck) Layton born (baptised 5 Sep 1762) Child (Layton): 1.Sarah. (only child listed).
Another entry on a Daniel Brinckerhoff: Daniel Brinckerhoff born Flushing NY 16 Oct 1736 died Fishkill NY 1722 married Maria Schenck daughter of Minne & Maria (Monfort) Schenck born 2 Jun 1736 died Fishkill NY.
Sarah Brinkerhoff, Manhasset, Queens County, Long Island NY

I'm looking for information on the family of
William Layton (1762-1839) = Sarah Brinkerhoff (1764- )
Sarah was the daughter of Daniel Brinkerhoff ((1734- ), and Ann Montfort (1735- )

William was the son of David Laton (1733-1810) and Eleanor Van Wycklyn (1737-1826)

The Laytons (Laiton, Laton, Latton, Leiton, Leiten, ec) were living in Oyster Bay; some are buried in the Brookville cemetery (Wolver Hollow Dutch Reformed Church) and some, including William and Sarah, in the Manhasset Cemetery (also Dutch Reformed).

I've seen lineages for this couple that indicate a single child, Sarah b. 1792. I suspect that they had more than the one child. I've been unable to locate census records for the couple, though they clearly remained on Long Island their entire lives.

I'm interested in getting a more complete child list, or other information about William and Sarah.

Thanks
Bill
