I have seen several reference to August Brinkmann in this message board - sometimes with a reference to a brother Fred. I don't know how many of the e-mails are active, but you might want to try and connect with some of them. When I did a search of August in just the Brinkmann message board, I came across 12 name references. Maybe one of them might be able to help you. So far I haven't found a connection linking to my Brinkman's - but anything is possible.

I am searching for any records of my GGGrandfather named Christian Carl Brinkmann b.1829, d.1906 in Germany. He married Marie Elisabeth (Merker) in 1863, and they had three children: August Brinkmann, Louise Brinkmann, and Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Brinkmann b.1872, d.1948.

I will keep your post. I don't know if we're related either. I have a lot to find out about my Brinkmann relatives and they seem to be hiding from me! In my last post I listed everything that is known to me about the Brinkmann's. None of your names are familiar to me. When I find out more I will post again. You never can tell.....

Re: BRINKMANN Family, NEW YORK

Sorry it took so long to respond. Thank you for checking into this.

I also found the 1870 census with Charles, Annie and Henrietta Brinkman. I did not think the 1850 census was them because Charles isn’t with them but you are right. I need to check into that more. He could very well be with another relative.

Unfortunately, I know hardly anything about the Brinkmann family. I actually knew nothing at all about them until my mother passed away in 2008 and I found an obituary which started me putting some pieces together. I have hit more brick walls than finding facts but I’m working on it. I have been really saddened that I knew nothing about my ancestors.

I will check out the 1850 census more in depth and see if I can find anything else.

The only information I have at this time is:

Henrietta Wilhelmina Brinkmann – died 13 Nov 1887 (I was told she was born in Germany)
Henrietta’s son:
Charles John Brinkmann (dropped the 2nd ‘N’ at some point in time)
Born 14 Feb 1845, New York, New York, New York
Married Anna Gertrude Bromm 14 Feb 1869
Died 17 Apr 1873, Manhattan, NY
Charles’ and Anna’s children:
Henrietta Wilhelmina Brinkman Schmidt (Smith) – Smith was her step father’s name
Born 15 Jan 1870, Manhattan, NY
Married Herman Firman 5 Jun 1887, Manhattan, NY
Died 18 May 1934, Brooklyn, NY
Elisabeth Louise Brinkmann
Born 6 Dec 1871, Manhattan, NY
Died 2 Jan 1879

I got most of this information from the Charles John Brinkmann family Bible. I found it very strange that Charles' father's name, nor death date is listed in the Bible.

Poor Charles. He got married at 24 and died at 28. He had two little girls; one only lived until she was 7. Life sure was tough back then.

Again, thanks for taking the time. I’ll check out the census to see if I can undig anything else.

I'm not related but tried a few census searches. I found Charles & Anna in the 1870 census, but haven't found any listing for Charles John or Henrietta Wilhelmina earlier than that.

Source Citation: Year: 1870
Census Place: New York Ward 10 District 4, New York, New York
Roll M593_984; Page: 155A; Image: 316; Family History Library Film: 552483.

Charles Brinkman 25, Car Man, NY
Annie Brinkman 23, Prussia
Henrietta Brinkman 6/12 NY

I also searched for "Hattie" and since the mother's other name was Wilhelmina, I searched for "Minnie" or " Minna". I found this entry that might be worth looking into.. Even though 5 yr. old Charles John isn't enumerated in the household, maybe he was staying with relatives or friends since there was a new baby in the household?

Source Citation: Year: 1850
Census Place: New York Ward 1 Eastern Division, New York, New York
Roll M432_534; Page: 28B

John Brinkman, 24, Lamplighter, GER
Minna Brinkman, 23, GER
Louisa Brinkman, 2, NY
Sophia Brinkman, 5/12, NY

How old was Henrietta when she died in 1877? If you know her approximate age, that will give you an approximate birth year.

BRINKMANN Family, NEW YORK - Henrietta Wilhelmina (? - 1887, Charles John (son 1845 -1873)

Looking for information on parents of Charles John Brinkman, born 14 February, 1845 in New York, New York, New York, USA; died 17 April, 1873. Mother is Henrietta Wilhelmina Brinkmann (maiden name unknown), born in Germany, date unknown; died 13 November, 1887. Father born in Germany. No other information available on father. Unknown if Charles had any siblings.

Charles married Anna Gertrude Bromm, daughter of Conrad Bromm, on 14 February, 1869. Charles and Anna only had two children before he died; Henrietta Wilhelmina and Elisabeth Louise. At some point the second ‘N’ was dropped from Brinkman.

Interested in corresponding with others researching the Brinkmann line; willing to share what information I have. This includes the Charles Brinkman and Anna Bromm Family Bible sheets.
The attached photo is a Friendship Quilt made by Minnie Brinkmann. Friendship quilts are made from separately designed blocks. The friend or family member who made each block would sign their name using indelible ink or embroidery. These quilts were given as mementos to families before they moved away, or in honor of some event. This quilt is from Iowa dated Dec. 25, 1886. It was given to Mrs. Louie P. Hanes, by the First Christian Church, Winterset, IA. Signers on the quilt identified themselves by locale: the Dakota Territory, Kansas, New York, and others.
Minnie Brinkmann - (1855 - 1939)

Minnie Brinkmann was a gifted artist who lived all her life in the hill country of central Missouri. Minnie had polio as a child and was subsequently confined to a wheelchair the remainder of her life.

Miss Brinkmann never married. Over time, the making of quilts became a large and important part of her life. She reportedly worked every day for over 60 yrs. making quilts for friends, family, and church fund-raisers. Minnie is said to have never sold a quilt and to have never purchased cloth with which to sew. Friends and family who appreciated the quality of her work, provided Miss Brinkmann with materials. These were common rural folk so the fabrics were almost entirely the remnants of old clothes. Minnie Brinkmann made art out of these scraps with an artist's eye for design, skillful piecing, and an outstanding color sense.
Adele was the daughter of Frances Huster Jansen, who was daughter of Agnes Heer Huster. Would be happy to find out more about Franz Mechler.

Herman Brinckmann was born ~1814 in Germany and died in St. Louis 13 Dec 1893.

His wife was Katherine RUDOLPH? who was born ~1816 in Germany and died 03 Oct 1890 in St. Louis.

They had the following children that I know of, but possibly there were more:

Carolina BRINKMANN
Caspar BRINKMANN
Katherina (Kate) BRINKMANN (1856 - 1915)
Mary Anna BRINKMANN (1860 - 1926)
William BRINKMANN (1861 - 1912)

Mary and William were born in St. Louis. The others were born in Germany.

It appears the family immigrated ~1858.

They were living at 1448 Warne Ave. at their deaths.

Their daughter Kate married Frank Becker. Their daughter Caroline married someone with a surname Otto. Their daughter Mary married George Spreckelmeyer.

Anybody familiar with this family?

My great grandfather, Friedrich Simon Wilhelm Brinkmann was born in Landenholzhausen in September 1866. He emigrated to the United States in 1884 and lived the remainder of his life in Lincoln, Nebraska where he raised 4 sons and 1 daughter. "Fred" died in 1926 and his obituary states that he had a brother, "August", living in Germany at the time. I have a lot more information about this family if you think we may be related. I have never had any contacts with other descendants of Langenholzhausen Brinkmanns.

Please email me directly if you wish to share information.

maryjo.cqr1@comcast.net

When Reinhold Schunzel and Annemarie came to the US in 1937, Hanne stayed in Germany. She made alot of films in Berlin, So I assume that is where she lived.
Hanne also had a brother Karl and a sister Louise.
Frederick Brinkmann, Waterloo, Monroe Co.

We are searching for relatives of our Jansen family from Waterloo, Monroe Co., IL. On a couple of my Jansen grandaunt's baptismal certificates, around 1893-1905, a Brinkmann is listed as a Godparent from Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo. Frederick Brinkmann was married to Mary Elizabeth Heer on January 8, 1880 in Monroe Co.,IL. Mary Elizabeth Klecker first married Gerhardt Heer. They had a son, Charles H. Heer who was in the seminary in Germany about 1835. Gerhardt passed away and Mary married Louis Heer. They had children-Francis, Edward, and Agnes and they alll left the Kingdom of Hanover, Germany and landed at Baltimore, MD. They proceeded by wagon to St. Louis and most ended up in Waterloo. Mary E. Heer was the daughter of either Charles H. Heer or Francis Heer. She would be the Mary E. Heer who married Frederick Brinkmann. There are a few Mary E Heers in this family. Other names all connected in these families are Jansen Jung Sievers Mechler Brinkmann Rickermann Heer Huster Marquardt and several others living in Waterloo, IL and some to St. Louis and St. Charles, MO..Charles H. Heer married a Koenig in St. Charles, MO. and eventually lived in Springfield, MO.

Think first went to FL. with Elizabeth(Betty)'s mother Ella Elizabeth Brinkman, sister Mame and spouse Lloyd(upholstery business) sister Martha and spouse Smitty(last name Smith). The year they all went to Florida was possibly around 1940's to 1950's. Elizabeth's parents were William Brinkman and Ella Miller of Coplay,PA. I know Betty and Jim had a daughter(not sure if more children).Believe both Betty and Jim may have passed in the 1980's. Would really like to get in touch with my cousins.

I procured this information from the St. Louis County Library in the cemetery books. I was just looking through books while visiting with someone and jotted down several people that I had found which were connected to the JANSEN family and some others. A Brinkmann couple, which their first names evade me right now right off without any notes, was one of my Grand Aunt's Godfather in Waterloo, IL at Sts. Peter and Paul Church. They were also Godparents to other siblings. I believe that Anna Brinkmann may have been Anna Jansen, but I'm not sure. She would have possibly been my Great Grandfather's sister or cousin. I don't know how exactly these two Brinkmann's are related to the Jansen and Jung clan in Waterloo, but they are. I think Frederick Brinkmann buried at Holy Ghost may have been the father of this Brinkmann Godfather. Another "Godfather" was Franz Mechler. And, there was also a Johannes Augustus Marquardt as a Godfather to the siblings. Again, I'm not sure about this. Hope this helps you.

Re: Brinkmanns/Brinkman in MI (Detroit)

It is great to finally get a response! I have found out some more information since I posted my query. Johann and Elisabeth came from Neirentrop, parish of Dorlar, or Berghoff. I do not know if this is where they originated but one of their children, Josephina, was born in Dorlar parish. Here are some of the notes that I have gathered about the places:

Menkhausen is in my atlas and like Nierentroph, it is just outside of Dorlar. Berghoff is not in the atlas but in reference I have found it is referred to as ‘near Menkhausen’. On the web I found a recent list of election zones in the “Parish” of Dorlar, which include Menkhausen, Berghoff and Nierentrop. They all seem to be hamlets.

John Brinkmann’s occupation, being a day laborer, may be a reason that they moved from Menkhausen to Berghoff and maybe to Nierentrop.

I had found a site with a list of emigrants to America from Westphalia. This included the names of three Brinkmanns who originated from Menkhausen.

1. Johann Brinkmann born c. 1821 origin Menkhausen
2. Johann Brinkmann born 10-19 1936, Menkhausen
3. Joseph Brinkmann c. 1840, Menkhausen

I believe that number one is my Johann Brinkmann, but I cannot be sure.

In addition, I have found indications that Elisabeth was decendant of a "Baron Von Dreisbach." I have not found any more information about her side of the family.

According to the 1900 US Census record, Ferdinand (son of Johann) was asked when he immigrated to the US, he answered 1849. Josephine (daughter of Johann) answered 1848. John's son, Anton, was born in Michigan in June of 1849, so the immigration date must be either 1848 or early 1849.

Thank you for any help that you can provide
Doug
