Hi,
I hope I'm not wasting your time but I noticed your Catherine married a John Dinan in 1878 in New York and I have been searching for years with no success to find my John Dinan who emmigrated to New York pre 1851 with his brother or cousin,so I'm wondering if your John could be his son or his cousins son. I know I'm chasing wild connections but I've tried all the regular ones so wondered if you might be able to help. My John Dinan was born @1806 in Ireland, possibly Cork, and on census returns was either a Tailor or Sailor-its difficult to read. We believe he fought in the American Civil War and we believe he died at the Battle of Bull Run but I'm getting to the point where I'm doubting everything I've been told from family memories as he's proving so elusive. If your John's father was from Ireland and you think there could possibly be any connection I'd be delighted to here more. Thanks very much and good luck with your searching.

If you take the name Briody and join it with Yankeetown or Warrick County (or even Vanderburgh County) in Indiana, we must be related in some way. My father (Leon William Briody) was from Yankeetown; and I vaguely remember visiting that community with him in order for him to to catch up on family news. He talked very little about his family; but after a visit to Briody's Pub in Dublin,Ireland I find myself more interested. From what little I can glean, Peter Briody (who married Eliza Hill) started everything shortly after the Civil War. From there, I know nothing... yet. I do nknow that there are several pronunciations of Briody, wih the one used by my dad being similar to Bridey with a long "O' inserted. The owners of the pub think that my origin was County Cavan; but, I cannot rule out County Cork.
Eric
I found the Holden's in the 1880, 1900 & 1910 census but was unable to find Catherine prior to their marriage which was about 1877. There is something interesting about the 1900 & 1910 census. In both census there are Sexton's living with the family. My wife's grandparents, Joseph Briody & Anna Black were married in 1891 and a Thomas Sexton was one of the witnesses at the ceremony. It appears there may be a connection. Most of the Briody's living in the Hudson county area were related in some way. We probably have a "cousin" type of relationship here.
Mike O.
mikeo0714@comcast.net

Of course, Union Briody. He was a sibling to my grandfather. I have the complete union military record for Peter which includes his pension info and info re: his injury while serving as a confederate soldier. Do you have any of that info? I have his arrival in New Orleans, also. I have copies of all of the confederate and union pay records. The information coincides and is not contradictory. He is listed as Peter Brady from Lousiana. That Peter Brady was injured at the Battle of Perryville, Ky on Oct. 8, 1863. His union record listed as Peter Briody from IL and then living in IN describes the wound that he received at the Battle of Perryville, KY and this was, of course, prior to his union military service. I think this confirms his confederacy service. Also in the 1900 census, their youngest son, Charles, lists his father as having been born in LA. This is probably what he thought, but again gives credence to this Peter Brady and Peter Briody beiing the same person.

I am descended through John Thomas, Peter's oldest son and my grandfather was William Henry, born in 1895 to Alice Gertie and John Thomas. My birth mother was Gertrude (named after her grandmother) Marcella, William's oldest daughter who died earlier this year at the age of 93. At the age of six I was adopted by William's youngest daughter, Bessie, and her husband, Donald Wright. I have complied a booklet re: my research of above. My sister inherited a rifle from our Grandfather William that he got from his father John Thomas. It has been validated as being from the Civil War era and might be the rifle that Peter carried during the war. My booklet includes pictures of this rifle. William was one of the twins, but his twin brother died at the age of 5 months. I would like to hear back from you. I will share copies of anything that I have. Would you be willing to share copies of the discharge papers? Where do you live now? I live in Sidney, OH, just 35 miles to the north of Daytong on I - 75, but grew up in Evansville.

Thanks,
Maryjane Wright Kovacs

I am in search of Christa whom married Robert TUITE and gave birth to John Joseph Tuite in April of 1834 I do not have a clear spelling on Christa's Maiden name, It was written on my ggrandfather John Joseph's death cert. by the undertaker in Ontario Canada. Up until a week ago I thought it was Broody /Brodie/ or Brevdy and have had no luck finding anything on her and when I was explaining it to someone who actually lives in Ireland he said I'll bet that it is Briody because they are also from Westmeath like most Tuite's. There is also another name that I believe could be Christa's sister is Rosanna Briody Married to Christopher Tuite with a son named Michael.
John, Michael and Rosanna emmigrated into Ontario Canada together during the time of the Famine.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? please email me Thanks

My ancester, Peter Briody, entered the US via New Orleans in 1847, served first in the Confederate Army in LA and later joined the Union Army in IL and finally settled in Warrick County, Indiana in 1867, where he died in 1892. There are many descendents since he had 8 children. His oldest child alone had 16 children. Please let me know if you see any connection.

Ancestry.com has images of WW1 registrations. Check Hudson co, Jersey City. Shows address for Cornelius Gregory Briody and also one for John Joseph. If you can get let me know, if not I'll send a copy. My prior info on the deaths had 2 Cornelius Briody ( Cornelius Joseph and Cornelius A. ) so I too have been trying to determine which is correct for the Monument.
My GM was a Briody from JC.

Hello George, My Briodys came from Red Hook section. The name seems to have originally been something like Brereton or Brierton. I have seen it spelled Briordy as well. Briody seems to have been the name the family settled upon. My gggrandfather Richard was born in Ireland about 1821 or a little earlier. (1870 Census Brooklyn Richard Brereton). The family lived on Sullivan Street as well as Wolcott Street.I have seen other Briodys located in Red Hook but there is not connection that I am aware of. I would appreciate it if you would contact me with any information you think that may be helpful to me. Thank you. Beth McLoughlin

I am a great, great granddaughter of Peter Briody (Madison Co., IL >Warrick Co., IN) and I am interested in your findings. Peter's death record of Oct. 1892 states that his father's name was Michael and that name has occurred in later generations. Do you know if there's a Briody/Boylan connection? Does the record list any parents names? Thanks for your help.

I am researching my great, great grandfather, Peter Briody, mar. Eliza Hill Caldwell Briody. I Have been unable to discover his arrival in the U.S. First found in Madison County, IL, but have documentation from his pension record that he served in the Civil War during an earlier stint (probably Confederacy) where he was injured in the battle of Perryville, KY (10/08/1862). In 1866 he was naturalized in IL and in 1867 he relocated to Warrick County, IN where he remained until his death. We know there are some ties in MI, since his son, James Nelson Briody (b) 3/2/1874 (d) 2/18/63 - moved to Flint, Michigan with his wife. We are uncertain of the year. (m) Charity Myrtle Bush (b) 1/15/1883 (d) 4/27/1968 Do you know if there is possibly a connection?
Mary, Peter Briody was my great grandfather and yes one of his sons, James Nelson, lived and still has family there, in Michigan. Peter had several children one of them was John Thomas Briody who is my grandfather. John was my dad's father. John had 16 or 17 children(including 3 sets of twins). Also, one of my dad's brother was names Peter who died in 1954 and also went by the name Brady instead of Briody. All of my aunt and uncles are now deceased. But there are tons of cousins still around. We have a Briody reunion every summer and will be having one probably in September of this year. My grandfather was married to Alice G Dempsey.

Robert the Briodys on Duncan Ave. are my wife's ggrandparents. Annie is Richard Black's brother. I have no information on Samuel Briody or Catherine Black at this time however my brother-in-law has a diary that belonged to Annie's daughter. He will be lending it to me soon and perhaps we will find something there. She never married so there is a good chance it will contain considerable info. on the family. Was your ggrandmother Delia Mchugh?
My grandfather, William H. Briody was the grandson of Peter Briody and Eliza Hill. He was a twin, but his twin brother died at the age of 3 months. He is buried in CA; however, his first wife, Myrtle Shoptaugh, my grandmother, is buried in Bates Hill cemetery. They had 3 daughters and one son. Marcella, my biological mother, is still alive. The next dtr was Mary, who died in 1983. Then Bessie, who adopted me, died in 1994. The last child a son, William L., has died and is buried in CA. My brother, Ivan Eugene Bates, who was not adopted, died in 1998 and is buried in Bates Hill Cemetery. My sister, Donna, was also adopted. My father was Ivan L. Bates and her father was Maynard LaRue. A son, Richard, by a third husband was born to Marcella. I have four children, soon to have grandchildren 15 and 16, and one great grandchild. I'll ask Linda to give you my e-mail address.

Hi Mary Jane, as of this time we have not been able to locate any information on when Peter Briody arrived in this country. We know he served in the Civil War and later settled in Warrick County, Indiana. Which of Peter's children are you descended from? I can't find your name in our family tree and would like to include you. Russ Briody
