Charles Brittan c1780

Hey there! Trying to go backwards up the tree, and have stalled at Charles Brittan, b@ 1780. He married Elizabeth Randall, also b@1780, and had a son, also named Charles, born @1804. I have a fair lead of what happens after that, but I'm trying to track the Brittans prior to Charles (the first). Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Morgan

.. there is a slim possibility that somewhere back, the last name was changed from "England" to "Brittan", as both were the names of the country and interchangeable.

Hi I'm also looking into Britan family tree. I have a note here that the reason the name as changed to Andrews was that they came to live with their Grandma ( I can't remember why) who's last name was Andrews. They took on their Grandma's last name. I'll look up the note and forward it to you.

So you are descended through Wiliam Britan's son Frederick Britan, born 8 Oct 1878, who married Emma Elizabeth Fereday on 23 December 1905 in Birmingham, UK, and subsequently moved to Shepherds Bush, London, UK where he died on 7 August 1919 after serving in the war.

Andrew Wilson (Grandson of Hilda Britan, Frederick's younger sister)
andrewewilson at mac dot com

Wonderful -- thank you for your reply. Apologies for the delay in responding – I had forgotten that I placed this post on Ancestry. I am also a great grandson of William Britan. My grandfather was William's son John William. I believe he emigrated to the U.S. in the 1890 timeframe with his older sister Jessie. I do not understand the situation from the time but John William and Jessie were apparently adopted by Samuel Andrews and his wife Sarah in Detroit, Michigan. I have discovered postcards and a letter sent from William and Elizabeth Britan to John William (now identified as William “Will” Britan Andrews) after this ‘adoption’ took place. You may be interested in another letter I have that was written by Hilda. I will happily share the information I have. Please feel free to contact me via my primary email: idylwilde@sbcglobal.net

Thank you,
Mark Andrews
William Britan is my great grandfather, through his daughter Hilda. We have his indenture as apprentice leather currier in York, plus other information. One of his children was called Andrews (first name), and he went to Hobart, Tasmania. Jessie's family is listed at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~deschart/z0000736.html whilst William's wife Elizabeth (nee Benson) stayed in York where she died on 28 June 1926.

Searching for family BRITAN information

I would appreciate any information regarding William BRITAN, listed as a Leather Currier in 1881 ENG (Holbeck, Leeds) census at 20 Dewsbury Road and 1891 ENG (Clifton, York) Yorkshire census. I believe William was born in approximately 1847 and died 15 Sept. 1905. William was married to Elizabeth BENSON and was the biological father of Jessie (married name COWLEY), Hilda (married name WILSON), Fannie (married name WRIGHT), John William BRITAN and several other children. John William and Jessie immigrated to the U.S. in approximately 1890 possibly with their mother. Elizabeth BENSON BRITAN appears to have then married Unknown ANDREWS as John William and Jessie's names became John William Britan ANDREWS and Jessie Britan ANDREWS settling in the Detroit, MI, USA area. Any information regarding the transition of children from BRITAN to ANDREWS is also greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
