Hi Michael,

If your YDNA results match the YDNA of the Britt line of William Britt c1765-1812 from Edgecombe Co NC (a son of Joseph Britt of Wake/Moore NC), then we're related.

This William died in Edgecombe NC in 1812 and left a will(wife was Mary Braswell...she died their 1850s). They had a bunch of kids. My ancestor is John J. Britt born c1797 Edgecombe NC - died c1869 TX (son of William Britt and Mary Braswell). I've suspected that the middle "J" might stand for Joseph.

John J. and first wife Margaret moved to GA to Jasper 1820, Talbot 1830, Sumter 1840. He bought and sold a bunch of land in Sumter (5000+ acres) and was an inferior court judge...built the first hotel and first sawmill. All of a sudden around 1841, he left GA (apparently abandoning his house and some properties) and ended up in Lafayette AR in 1850. He had 2 male slaves listed that year. In 1853, he is in Kaufman Co TX where he married second wife Mrs. Sarah Carrington Cole (don't know why he came to TX or how they met). Sarah and her first husband had been in Nacogoches Co TX in 1850...he got killed somehow. John J. Britt was in Ellis Co TX in 1860. I think he died in Comanche Co TX c1869 (vague details there...supposedly died in an access). In the 1860 census, he lied about his age (maybe because his second wife was so much younger).

John J had a brother named William D. Britt who came to GA with him and died in GA...think it was Muscogee Co (William D. Britt was in Sumter GA 1840 and Muscogee 1850). Some other Britt and Braswell cousins seem to have come to GA.

I think some Britt offspring went to AL although I've not sorted them out yet.

Which William do you think was your Benjamin Britt's father and what's that William's dob and location?

You can email me direct at gkcarson@aol.com.

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Gary! Thanks for contacting me. I believe we are related. My gg grandfather was George Britt. He was born abt. 1847 in Alabama. I have taken a dna test and am a match to Joseph Britt. He had sons Benjamin, Joseph Jr., Ryals and William. Wiliam left NC and went to GA., Al., and Texas. I did not know he was in Arkansas as well. At any rate, he owned a slave named George who I believe was my gg grandfather George Britt. I believe Georges father was Benjamin Britt, and that Benjamins father was William. Do you have any info on John J and William Britt. Especially anything about their life in Alabama and Texas. Or, possibly a will which may menton my gg grandfather George or his father. Also, have you taken a dna test? This is fantastic. I have been searching for info on my family for 15 years. Then suddenly this year I have had several breakthroughs due to the dna tests. Well, I hope to hear from you again soon. My direct e-mail address is mbritt8552@comcast.net

Regards,

Michael Britt

William Britt it is said died in 1811 becuase why? He suddenly drops off the face of the earth. Do you think maybe he was killed after enlisting to fight against the British.
Re: Britt Family!

Hello Michael,
I am a Descendant of William Britt and Mary Braswell. One of thier sons is Braswell Britt born about 1811. This is the approximate date that his father William Briit died the person that you are inquiring about is another son. This information can be found in the book "Kinfolks of Edgecombe county" The Braswells were a well educated bunch and have many wills and probates recorded all the way back to the 1600's in Isle of Wight Co in Va. Becuase they knew how to read and write wills, land grants as such were an important tool to them. John J. Britt was the brother of my GGG grandfather Braswell Britt. There is a definite link.

The difficulty I have is were william came from. Before he died, a distant relative showed me were this William was buried until a farmer supposedly plowed that small britt cemetery up. It was located in Halifax Co near the town of Enfield. Census records place Braswell Britt, and his children just outside of Enfield in 1860. However, a curious record in Nash county has him born there in Whitakers. Other records show he was born in Edgecombe Co. It is not until one does the tedious boundary work of Nash and Edgecombe Co meet at Whitakers which has one part in Nash Co and another part in Edgecombe.

What is even more interesting is Braswell Britt (my ancestor) the brother of John Britt (your inquiry) moved from Halifax co back to Whitakers between 1870 and 1880. The census shows him there alone and listed as married. The distance is only about 6 miles from Enfield. This is why my distant cousin could drive me to the location of William Britt's grave when i visited him. William Britt died in 1811 and Braswell Britt was born in 1811. Braswell was born in edgecombe (by the books) and Nash county was formed from Edgecombe Co. This places both John and Braswell in present day Whitakers probably on the Nash county side. It would appear that after the death of william the family went moved to Halifax co which is about 5 miles away. But not before 1833.

In short,
To the best of my knowledge there earliest place that I can be sure regarding John J. Britt is that he was about twelve years old at the time of his death living in Whitakers either on the Nash County side or the Edgecombe county. What I cannot say with any degree of certainty is whether or not Joseph Britt was the father him. However, I would like to work with you on this.

hello Michael,

I hit a wall with a william Britt in Edgecombe co NC. A few trees I noticed have his father as Joseph and mother as Jane. Then ofcourse Benjamin being Joseph's father. So we are right about at the same point. My e-mail is bryanb12008@yahoo.com. I cannot say if my William was a son of your Joseph but I am beginning to suspect it. I do have this william pinned to the North west area of present day Edgecombe co right at the Nash county border in or around 1811. I have good reason to believe this as opposed to the Tarboro area approximately 17 miles to the southeast which most people believe. I would like to work with you on this to see if I can establish a link to Joseph being his father. Many Britts were near many braswells in Isle of Wight so it is not too far fetched that the fact that my William Britt who married Mary Braswell a descendant of the Rev. Robert Braswell from Isle of wight to be connected to Brnjamin the father of your Joseph.

Regards,
C.Britt

Britt and family lived in Jasper GA 1820, Talbot GA 1830, Sumter GA 1832-1841, then Lafayette AR 1850. He married second wife Sarah Carrington Cole 1853 Kaufman TX.

He named a son Harrison Royston Britt born 1861 in Ellis/Navarro Co TX.

I've wondered if the name "Harrison" indicates a connection to your John Harrison Britt line (son of John and Lutilda White Britt). Any hints?

Also, do you know how a Hiram Britt in Carroll Co TN 1830-1850 might connect? He was living next to the Carrington family there...although I presume Sarah didn't meet JOhn J.
Hi,
My name is Lloyd Fowler. I am 18 and my maternal gradfather is a Britt. He and I are from the Blackman Britt b. 1813 in Bertie County, NC line. He married Rebecca Howell who was born in 1820 in NC according to the Census. My grandfather and I are both researching this Blackman Britt line and we are hitting brickwalls too on who are Thomas Britt jr.'s parents. My email address is lff58@yahoo.com and I would appreciate it if jjcarolina would email me. I have some questions for you. Thank you.

fyi my grandfather is the only son of John Quincy Britt Sr. and Mildred Kathleen Patton. John Quincy Britt Sr. did remarry and have another son. John Quincy Britt Sr. was the son of John William Britt and Lucy Catherine Porter. John W. Britt was the son of Blackman Britt and Rebecca Howell.

If you are a distant cousin. Please contact me. I would love to exchange info.

Re: Columbus Andrew Britt, b. 22 FEB 1879, Pulaski Co., KY

I may have information in my family that will help. My paternal gg grandmother was Virginia BRITT. Her father was John W. BRITT of Barren Co., Ky. He had several wives that I know of at this time. My ggg grandmother was Sarah Ann L WOODSON, however, I believe your g grandfather Andrew Jackson BRITT was of the same father, but his mother was Telitha BOULDEN, from what I can tell. He was born 4 July 1843 in Cumberland, TN and died 11 July 1928 in Roane, TN. Telitha BOULDEN was born 8 Feb 1816 in N. Carolina, married John W. BRITT 25 Apr 1844 in White, TN and died 28 March 1911 in White, TN. All of this information I found on Ancestry.com from other researchers info. From the info I have it appears John W. BRITT was married to both Sarah Ann L WOODSON and Telitha BOULDEN at the same time since Sara Ann continued to bear children until 1847??? I also found 6 additional childen that I believe were born by Telitha BOULDEN. They are Margaret b. 30 Apr 1836, TN, d. 2 Sep 1916 Cumberland, Tn, Nancy b. 1838 in TN, James M. b. 1847, TN, Columbus b. Apr 1850, Cumberland, TN, d. 30 March 1930, John b. 1853 and Mary E. b. 1856.

My family tree is Butler/Britt/Binion/Napier. The Butler/Britt side moved from Barren Co, Ky to Dallas, TX between 1870 and 1880 from Census info I have found.

Hope this information helps.

Barbara Butler Cheatham

Searching for Francis L. Britt

Francis L.Britt was my Great,Great Grandmother. We have no information on Francis except for the following. She was born Feb.1854 in Tennessee. She was married to Everett Britt. I have found these names associated with Everett so I supposed these names Euri,Eurit, are nick names. They had a granddaughter living with them by the name of Gurdie Hunt age 14 when my father was 16. They had children Melvina, Geroge Robert, Minnie, and John William. I don't know if the "L" is for her middle name, or a previous marriage. All the children were born in Tennessee, but the family moved to Hot Springs Arkansas when my father was about 3 years old. I assume she died in Hot Springs, but that is an assumption only. It is my hope that someone will know of Frances or Gurdie Hunt or Melvina.

So,Not To Long After I was Born My Mom & Father Divorced And I Have Never Met My Father or Anyone On His Side Of The Family. And All I Know About Them Is That His Name Is Victor Britt,And He Has Another Daughter Named Shannon Britt And A Son Named Elijah Britt(not sure about the spelling, but i believe that's correct.)And I've been Told That His Grandmother Or Great-Grandmother Is Part Blackfoot Indian.

That's All I Know Of That Side of My Family. And I Really Wanna Learn More. But I Do Not Want To Find My Father. What I'm Most Interested In Is My Native-American Background. I've Always been Interested In Them And I've Been Told I Look Native-American And Have Physical Trates Of Native-Americans,And I've Always Wanted To Know What Type Of Native-American I Was Exactly.

So,Basicly I Was Wondering if Anyone With The Last Name Britt. Might Have Someone With the names I Listed Above.

Re: Looking for Britts in North Carolina and Mississippi decended from Joseph Britt, Sr. or information about him

My name is Michael Britt. I believe I am related to William Britt, Benjamin Britts brother. My gg grandfather was George Britt. He was born in Alabama, and at some point moved to Texas. He lived in Harrison Co. Texas and in Kaufman Co., Texas. Any information you may have about William Britt would be greatly appreciated. I believe his son John J. Britt is my ggg grandfather.

I too took the dna test and am related to those Britts who descended from John Britt,b. 1669 d. 1737 in N.C.. whose son was Benjamin Britt, the brother of Ryals. I got this information from Martha Britt, my dna match, who is descended from Mayberry Britt.

It looks like we are distant cousins. Any information you have on the Britts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Michael Britt

African American Britt's

I am the gg grandson of George Britt, b. 1847, in Alabama. His wife was June. She was born in 1852, in Georgia. They lived in Harrison Co. Texas, and moved to Kaufman Co., Texas. Does anyone out there know anything about my roots? I believe they were slaves and owned by a W. Britt who lived in Alabama, and may have moved from there to Harrison Co. Texas around 1850. Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,

Michael Britt
