female Brittain/Britton m. to a McCullers, poss colonial GA

I have a Britton/Brittain/Bryiant McCullers living in Georgia, 1795 on (Burke, Washington, Wilkinson and Laurens counties). He was born at least by 1769, likely earlier. Possible names of children/siblings: Colson, James, John, Elizabeth. May also be a connection to the Harp/Harpe family as James is James Harp McCullers who later legally changed his name to James Harp.

It seems likely that his first name came from a family connection to the Brittain/Britton family. Anyone have a daughter married to a McCullers/McCullens?

Thanks,
Karen Dutton

She married my ggreatgrandfather in Houston, Tx. April, 1894 (Charles R. Brogdon). She gave birth to my grandmother (Eula Mae Brogdon) Nov. 1894or95. She gave birth to her son (Clifford Lee Brogdon) Nov. 1897.
She died in May 1898 and was buried in Houston, TX. Her grave has been decimated and we can find no trace of her.
I have heard that she may be of Indian Lineage.
Obit: Joseph Francis Brittain (1925-2007)

Joseph Francis Brittain, 82, of Springfield, died on September 22, 2007, after a brief illness. Son of the late Joseph William and Anna Laura (Williams) Brittain of Springfield and Webster County, he attended local schools, graduating from Central High School in 1942. In July of that year, upon reaching the age of 17, he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps. After basic and unit training in San Diego, he served 30 months in the Pacific Ocean area where he participated in combat action in the Solomon Islands and the Mariana Islands. He was particularly proud of having taken part in the recapture of the U.S. possession of Guam, which had fallen to the Japanese shortly after Pearl Harbor. At the war’s end, he was discharged with the rank of Sergeant.
In 1946, he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Forces and was part of the first group to be commissioned into the newly independent United States Air Force in 1947. His career assignments included those of instructor of radar/electronics, combat crew member as an electronic countermeasures observer in Strategic Air Command reconnaissance, technical intelligence liaison and analysis, and missile and space systems research and development. Although holding a Regular Air Force commission with the rank of Major, he elected early retirement in 1963 and pursued a second career as a member of the technical staff of The Aerospace Corporation of El Segundo, California, engaged in missile and space systems engineering for the Department of Defense, from which he retired in 1989.

He was a graduate of the University of Maryland, a member of the National Air and Space Intelligence Center Alumni Association, The California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, The Society of the War of 1812, The Sons of the Union Veterans, The Association of Old Crows, and a life member of the First Marine Division Association.

He was married to the late Eunice Fay Strother of Gulfport, Mississippi and is survived by two daughters, Carol Brittain, an attorney of San Francisco, CA, and Rebecca Bittner, a physician of McLean, VA, and by two grandchildren, Ryan Christopher Bittner and Elizabeth Fay Thomson Brittain.

Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2007 in St. Agnes Cathedral with Fr. Mike McDevitt celebrant. Interment service will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the Brittain family plot in the Marshfield Cemetery, Marshfield, Missouri under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut, Springfield.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday with prayer services starting at 7 p.m. all in the funeral home. The casket will be closed at all times.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Agnes Cathedral, 533 S. Jefferson, Springfield, MO 65806. Online condolences can be made at www.hhlohmeyer.com.

The Whole Story

I want to post this on the Ancestry message boards, in case others reading know a piece of the story.

My great-grandfather was born Levi Hart Woodruff. He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania on September 30, 1878. He was an extremely secretive man and with good reason.

His first “secret” wife was a woman named Annie F. Myers. She committed suicide in 1905. Levi and Annie had two children. Levi abandoned those children with Annie’s father and “skipped town”. My grandfather (by Levi’s third and final wife), Robert Woodruff, did not realize that his father had previous marriages or that he had two half-siblings until he was in his late 70s. Levi never spoke about any previous marriages or children. When in his late 70s, my grandfather met his half-sister from this marriage for the first time. Sadly, his half brother had died shortly before.

The details about my great-grandfather’s life, from 1905-1920, are even more confusing than the rest of his life. I have been trying to learn more by tracing him through surviving records. He changed his name from Levi Woodruff to Horace Woodruff (“Horace” was the name of his first child with Annie who died in infancy. I assume this is the significance of adopting the alias Horace). I assume that both the alias and the change in location were to avoid the Chester County authorities who were looking for him regarding the abandoned children.

Just LAST WEEK, I found out that Horace Woodruff had a second “secret” “marriage”. Horace Woodruff and Maggie Benjamin filled out a marriage application in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1908! This might account for some of Horace’s missing time. Interestingly enough, the bottom portion of the marriage application was never completed – the implication being that they applied for the marriage license but never went through with the wedding. I almost stopped looking for more. I had successfully found my great-grandfather’s ex-fiance, just an interesting piece of family trivia and another one of his secrets. Then I looked in the 1910 census.

In 1910 there is a “Margaret Woodruff” working for a hotel in Phoenixville, PA. She reports that she is married (although her husband is not listed in the census with her. Indeed, I have never been able to find my great-grandfather in the 1910 census. He literally vanishes from all records between 1908-1920). Margaret Woodruff states that she has been married for two years, which would be accurate based on the timing of the marriage license application. She also states that she has four living children. It seemed like this might be the same woman but I needed more proof. Then I went to the 1920 census.

In 1920, “Margaret Woodruff” has reverted back to “Maggie J Benjamin” and is still working at the same hotel. She is again using the same name as the on the 1908 marriage license application. This has to be the same woman! The fascinating thing is she states she is a widow. She is NOT a widow (well, she could be a widow from her first marriage to John Frank Benjamin, but not Horace’s widow). One, she was never legally married to my great-grandfather. Two, my great-grandfather was alive, living in Montgomery County, and married to yet ANOTHER woman – Minerva G. Jacobs, my great-grandmother!

Since last week, I haven’t been able to find out too much about the Benjamin family. In the 1900 census J Frank Benjamin (John Frank Benjamin) and Margaret Benjamin state they have been married for four years, which puts their marriage at about 1896. Their two oldest children, Thomas and Anna are living at home with them (Bertha isn’t born yet, nor is the unidentified fourth child). John Frank Benjamin reports that he was born in 1872 in Pennsylvania – no further birth information. He states his father was born in England and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. I have never seen John Frank Benjamin’s death record nor do I know where he is buried. Assumedly he dies between 1900-1908. Maggie’s maiden name was Margaret Jane Brittian. She was born August 18, 1870 in Ireland. She died March 15, 1951 and is buried in Port Kennedy, Pennsylvania. Her mother E A Brittian also immigrated to the United States and lived in the Phoenixville, PA area. According to family trees on Ancestry.com, Maggie and John had THREE living children (not four) – Thomas Frank Benjamin born August 7, 1896 who married Winifred Margaret Murphy and had at least seven children, Anna Benjamin born June 1, 1898 who married Norman Myers, and Bertha Benjamin born June 9, 1901 who married Unknown and had eight children. I know that some of these Benjamin grandchildren are still living in the Phoenixville, PA area.

I have so many questions…Did my great-grandfather and Maggie actually have a wedding ceremony? If so, why didn’t they return the bottom portion of the marriage application? Could the missing fourth living child, reported in the 1910 census, actually be my grandfather’s half-sibling? Did Maggie claim she was Margaret Woodruff, married to my great-grandfather, because she was pregnant with his child? The fourth child was living in 1910 where did he/she go? Did Maggie think she was a widow in the 1910 census because John had died or did she think that Horace was dead? Did she know he was just a few miles away married yet again? Where did my grandfather go between his “marriage” to Maggie and his marriage to my great-grandmother? My grandfather and his siblings from his third marriage did not know anything about his past. Horace kept it all a secret.

Thanks,

Tracey
My Brittian Family

My great great grandmother was Caroline Brittian, born 1827, somewhere in Pennsylvania, died 1861 in Luzerne County Pa. She was married to William Zane Hatcher, born 1825 in Philadelphia. I don't know much about my Brittian line except that Caroline's father was mentioned as either a James Parks Brittian or a Thomas Brittian. Recently I have found some old, hand written notes, left by a long gone cousin, from a Hatcher branch that I never knew existed until this last year. The notes mention a Nathan Brittian and wife Elizabeth Parks married 1760, a James Brittian b.1766, a Lt. John Brittian b.in Pa - died in Pa 1811 and a decendant of John Brittian being Elizabeth R. Kern. I have some 1800's photos, from William Zane Hatcher's photo album, showing some of these Brittians. Could anyone help me possibly connect? Thank you.

Bob Hatcher
Mountaintop, Pa.

William Pinkney Brittain Family -Cherokee County, TX

William Pinkney Brittain married Nancy Belton Neal on 23 June 1839 in Benton County, AL. The Brittains are enumerated in Benton County, AL in 1840. In 1848, William Pinkney Brittain was Worthy Master of the Masonic lodge in Rusk, TX and in 1850 the Brittain family are enumerated in Cherokee County, TX. William Pinkney Brittain is also in Cherokee County, TX in 1860 and 1870. William Pinkney Brittain was Clerk of Court in Cherokee County, TX for much of this period. William Pinkney Brittain died in January 1876 after being shot by a son of his second wife, whom he had divorced. Nancy Belton Neal Brittain apparently dies between 1860 and 1870, but her grave location and death date are unknown. Of the ten Brittain children enumerated in the Census returns for 1850 through 1870, only two can be tracked elsewhere (Emily D. Brittain and Onslow E. Brittain). "Missing" are Seraphina Brittain (born ca. 1846), Belzora F. Brittain (born ca. 1848), Laura J. Brittain (born ca. 1850), William Pinkney Brittain, Jr. (born ca. 1853), Ellen L. Brittain (born ca. 1855), Rebecca H. Brittain (born ca. 1857), Sam Houston Brittain (born ca. 1859), and Mollie B. Brittain (born ca. 1864). Can anyone help further in tracking this family?

Revolutionary War Property Confiscations
One of the ugliest things about Revolution is that it pits brother against brother. The victors, of course, get to write the histories. But the Revolution, far from being the sanitized “British vs. Americans” conflict taught in our schools, also pitted Americans against other Americans.

A list of the names of all those Persons whose property was Confiscated in the Several Counties of the State of New Jersey, for joining the Army of the King of Great Britain &c. as returned to the Auditors Office, previous to the first day of May 1787.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information, which comes from a webpage titled "Property Confiscations, Monmouth County." The link for the site is listed below.

Joyce

http://www.horsethief.info/newjersey/property.htm#Top

I'm looking for the Brittain connection,I have Elizabeth Hutchison b.5-Nov-1775 d.23-Sept.-1845 married to Jeremiah Brittain b.28-July-1774 d.28-Aug-1844 in PA.
Also, James Hutchison b. abt. 1774 d.5-Feb.-1852 married to Elenore(Nelly) Brittain b 3-May-1781 d.24-Feb-1864.
Also, Either Andrew or George Hutchison married Jane Brittain.
I'm not clear on which one but, I'd say it was Andrew Hutchison. Jane was b.25-March-1784 d. 6-March 1852. Andrew was born abt. 1784 and d. 13-Dec.1827.
I'm not sure if all the Brittain's here are related or not.
If anyone has information on these Brittain's , you can e-mail me at mierkepatricia@hotmail.com Thanks

Brittain, Ethel Elizabeth in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA)

Brittain, Ethel Elizabeth

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes).

I extracted all of the names (& some other information) from the yearbook & have put them on my genealogy web site (total of 13 web pages, containing over 1,900 records; sorted alphabetically by surname).

The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site, not just data about the families I am researching. I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

I wonder if this great work of Joyce (with the help Randi Furguson and others) has been put on a gedcom file.
Horatio Nelson Brittain / Elizabeth Morrow

I have an original civil war letter dated July 17, 1861, describing my ancestor H.N. Brittain and son Marcus Lafayette Brittain in Virginia or N.C.( found in a family bible about 20 years ago). H.N. (Horatio Nelson) Brittain and his son Marcus died in the civil war, H.N. was 50 years old (1865) and Marcus was 22 (1862),. Another son died from secondary illnesses from the war at age 19 (1863), his name was John R. Brittain. Neither lived long enough to produce children. H.N. was married to Elizabeth Morrow, two other children died in infancy.
I also have an original Last Will and Testament of Nelson Taylor Brittain from union co, Blairsville, Georgia. (1922) N.T. Brittain was born Oct 12, 1847 and died June 20, 1922. I believe he may have been married 2 times, first to a Sarah J._____, and later to a Rebecca Hood. N.T. had only 1 son, his name is or was W.R. Brittain.
My grandmother was the last Brittain in my lineage, Her name was Fannie Alice Brittain. My grandmother married John T. Grant somewhere around 1900 in Texas. I am not sure where we all fit together as I do not know who her family was. All of her children, including my father are all gone. There were 8 of them. I am not an avid searcher of geneaology, but do find it interesting. I have never met any family named Brittain. Maybe I will find a long lost relative that would like to be a pinpal. Thanks for reading, Charles D. Grant, Texas.

I am looking for an old friend we lost touch about 3 years ago. Stephen & Stephanie Brittain. His family was from Texas but hers is in California and I am pretty certain that is where they still live. He is prior Air Force they are about 35 & 36 and have at least 2 boys and possibly a girl or other children. She was a certified teacher as well as both of her parents but I do believe she stays at home with the children. I know he had two sisters that still lived in Texas last I heard. She has two brothers but I do not remeber her maiden name - her dad's name was also Stephen and prior military, one of her brothers was brandon and also military.

John CANTRELL / Rachel BRITTAIN, Joseph BRITTAIN / Jemina unknown, I have a question.

Has anyone else come to this conclusion? Rachel Brittain ( 1726) that married in 1743 to John Cantrell ( 1724 son of Joseph Cantrell & Catherine Heath ) may be a sister to Joseph Brittain ( 1729 - 30 ) husband of Jemina unknown? James Brittain b. 1755 married to Delilah Stringfield b. 1767, their daughter Mary Brittain b. 1784 married Thomas Edwards b. 1780, Thomas & Marys son Brittain Edwards b. 1804 married Nancy Johnson b. 1813, Brittain & Nancys daughter Laura Indiana Edwards b. 1832 married Jeremiah Davidson b. Apr. 20, 1828, Jeremiah & Lauras daughter Laura Indiana Davidson married Waddy Thomas Cantrell b. Nov.1854( a gr,gr,grandson of JOHN CANTRELL & RACHEL BRITTAIN ) Not to mention the fact that Keziah Brittain b. Oct. 6, 1789 Dade Co GA. (daughter of James Brittain & Delilah Stingfield ) married Jeremiah Pace in 1825 in N.C. and their daughter Minerva Pace b. 1804 married John P. Davidson b. 1803 d. July 3, 1895 the parents of JEREMIAH DAVIDSON b. Apr. 20, 1828. Jeremiahs sister Delilah Anna Davidson b. 1830 d. July 1, 1912 ( Obit in Rome News Tribune July 3, 1912 ) married WILLIAM H. MATHIS on Jan. 8, 1878 in Rome, Floyd Co. Ga. FYI - William H. Mathis was my gr,gr,grandfather, and John Cantrell / Rachel Brittain were my 5th great grandparents...............My theory is this.....the families of Brittain / Cantrell / Davidson / Pace / Mathis and for good measure Russell & Hudson ALL came from VA./ PA. to N.C. to S.C. and then some to GA. and TN. They must have all known eachother, and been related in some way other then just marriages, theres too many things that fit for them not to have. ANYONE with the above surnames might just want to check this idea out. Just thought I`d add my 2 cents worth.

Waldo C Brittain of Otwell and Winslow Indiana killed in WWII

Waldo C Brittain of Otwell and Winslow Indiana was killed January 4, 1945 in the South Pacific during World War II. He is officially listed as missing or buried at sea. His name appears on the “Tablets of the Missing” at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. We are seeking information regarding his military and civilian life.

I am a retired Hoosier from Madison County residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. We are seeking family and military information about servicemen from your county killed in the South Pacific during World War II. There are 17,206 Americans buried here and thousands more that are missing or buried at sea and are honored on the “Tablets of the Missing”. Please visit our website to see the beautiful memorial located in Manila, Philippines.

http://fizkid.tripod.com/

My wife and I visited the cemetery as visitors and left with a mission in our heart. We have been taking photographs of the graves of the Indiana servicemen buried here and have been uniting them (at no charge) with their family members in Indiana and across the United States. To receive the photo of your family member, neighbor or friend all you need is a working email address. We do not send them to regular mailing addresses due to the costs. Please help us find the families of the men that might still be living. Our project is only successful because of teamwork and your contributions are noted on our website. If you wish to help us we will be pleased to add your name to our ACKNOWLEDGMENT page on the website. The obituaries usually did not appear till to three months after the death date.

If you are not a genealogist you can help by just picking up the telephone directory and find someone with the same last name and give them a call. It has worked many times for us.

Zenas5@yahoo.com

Sincerely,

Dave and Apple Dwiggins
San Pablo City, Philippines

I would like to know his birth date, death date and city he was born in and died in. I am almost sure he was born in Whitley County, Ky. 1891 or before. I am doing a history or our organization and I would like to know what became of him.
I would appreciate any response.

Otis Virginia Brittain,Pasadena,Tx 1964

I am looking for descendants of the above,
who corresponded with my sister-in-law,
Jerry Rotter in 1964. They were researching
the John Thomas Thompson/Nancy Rector family
and Virginia was putting
together a book. Jerry lost touch. Anybody
know these people?
