Census takers sometimes misspell names, look for both britten and britton in census; I found a Willard M Britten died in Ft Wayne in 1988 in SSDI, and a Willard Britton living in Iron River MI in 1930, son of Richard and Jennie, Most of the fun of this is the looking, Richard was born in Gratiot Co MI. In researching the Line of John I Britten born ca 1760, I also looked at his brothers line, Richard Britten. Let me know if you want more info, US Vital records an online genealogy site is free and separates by states and then by counties, I think you can get some marriage info from debean marriage records on this site, your Britten family was in Michigan from about 1836 until at least 1930. Jennie died in about 1972 in Iron River and her husband died in 1936. Library of Michigan in Lansing has a nice collection, newspapers too. Check website for hours, as they are cutting back.

For example, I take it your g-grandfather was Edwin Franklin Britten (Sr.), but who was his father (your 2nd-g grandfather)? And who was your 3rd-great Britten grandfather? And so on ... as far back as you know.

Thanks!

-- Constance

History of Richmond County, New York, 1887

Britton Family

This family is of French descent, and their name was originally written Breton, another example of the change of French names into English. The earliest mention of the name in connection with the island, is that of Captain, sometimes called Colonel Nicklos, who was born in 1679, and died January 12, 1740.

The following is a copy of the inscription upon the tombstones of Colonel Nicklos Britten and his wife on Long Island, the one a Ten Eyck, the other a Hageman, and then purchased land and removed here.

"Here lies ye Body of Col. Nicklos Britten, aged 61 years, Deceased Jan. 12, 1740. Here lies a man of tender hart
Unto the poor in every part
He never sent the poor away
Which well is nown unto this Day."

"Here Lyes ye Body of Frances, wife of Col. Nicholas Britton, aged 66 years, Deceased May ye 7, 1748.

This Woman who is buried here
This county has nown for many a year
A loving mistress, a faithful wife
A Tender mother all her Life."

These stones are still standing in the Moravian cemetery.

William was defendant in a suit at law October 3, 1680. Nathaniel was plaintiff in a suit in July, 1681, and. again in a suit with Lewes Lakerman in the same year. These two last named were adults when "Col. Nicklos" was an infant, but the consanguinity between them cannot now be ascertained. There was another William, a. son of Nicholas, probably Col. Nicklos, born October 11, 1708. There was a Joseph, perhaps a brother of William, who had a son James, baptized April 23, 1707, and a daughter, in 1708. There was also a Richard, who purchased land in 1694.

Nathaniel made his will in 1683, but he was still living in 1695; he was probably the same individual who was a party to the law- suit alluded to above. Nathaniel and Esther Belleville had a daughter, baptized April 9, 1732. Nathaniel and Mary his wife, had the following children: Joseph, born November 15, 1760; Richard, born March 22, 1760; William, born September 19, 1768. Samuel and Mary had the following daughters: Addra, born July 7, 1771; and Mary, horn July 31, 1773. Nathaniel and Catharine had a daughter Mary, born April 4, 1775; at her baptism, the father was also baptized. Samuel and Polly Latourette married May 24, 1797.

The present representative of one branch of the family, is J.A.H. Britton, Esq., of New Dorp; his father was Nathaniel, whose place of interment is marked by the marble monument at the southwest corner of the Church of the Ascension. Nathaniel was born in 1764 or 1765; he was twice married; his first, wife was a Van Buskirk, of Bergen, and they were the parents of Debora, wife of Joshua Mersereau, born August 4, 1782, died March 26, 1840; Cornelius, born July 1, 1785, died April 3, 1867; he resided at Fresh kill for many years before his death.

Abraham, born August 20, 1787, died August 26, 18(36, resided on the Clove road in Castleton, and was the father of Henry and Abraham, both deceased, who resided on the paternal property. Nathaniel, Jr., born in 1792, died February 13, 1841, owned and resided on the property on the east side of Broadway, West New Brighton, extending the whole length of that highway. He had also another son, John. Nathaniel's second wife was Margaret Bedell, who was born January 5, 1768, and died September 21, 1849; she was the mother of J.A.H. Britton, Esq., as before mentioned.

Source: History of Richmond County, (Staten Island) From its Discovery to the Present Time: Richard M.
Charles b@1780?

Hey there! Trying to go backwards up the tree, and have stalled at Charles Brittan, b@ 1780. He married Elizabeth Randall, also b@1780, and had a son, also named Charles, born @1804. I have a fair lead of what happens after that, but I'm trying to track the Brittans prior to Charles (the first). Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Morgan

.. there is a slim possibility that somewhere back, the last name was changed from "England" to "Brittan", as both were the names of the country and interchangeable.

Britten/Brittain/Britton NY to Hillsdale and St. Joseph Co. MI to IL

My Britton brick wall is my gg-grandfather, John Britton (Britten, Brittain). He was born in NY sometime between 1814 and 1823 (approx. year of birth different acc. to census records, marriage certificate, and census mortality schedule).

John married Elmira (aka Almira, Alminda) Wilder (aka Wyldson) on Feb. 18, 1842, in Hillsdale Co., MI (marriage cert.). She’s always listed as having been born in Ohio; I haven’t been able to find any record of her before her marriage to John.

John and Elmira’s children were Lucy J. (m. Golden), Mary Ann (“Annie”; m. Sherman], Alonzo H., Charles H., Jairus Parker, and William). All were b. in MI, between 1843 and 1860.

John and Elmira were in Pittsford Twp. on the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Between 1860 and 1861 they moved to Galva, Henry Co., IL, where John died in Sept. 1879 (“killed by a horse” acc. to the 1880 census mortality schedule).

Someone named Dolly Barret (Banet?), age 67, b. NY, is listed with them on the 1850 census. I have no idea who she was, but perhaps Elmira’s mother had remarried and had come to live with them. Abigail Brittain, b. ca 1787 in NJ, is listed with them on the 1860 census. Just to compound the confusion, there’s a John R. Britten family in Pittsford Twp. on the 1850 census with an Abigail in the household, b ca 1770 NJ, and an Abram Britten (b. 1792 NY) with an Abigail in the household (not his wife), b. ca 1783 NY.

All the Brittens I could find listed on the 1850 census for Pittsford Twp., MI, are Jacob, John R., Richard R., another Richard, Nathaniel, and Abram. I know I can’t assume my John is related to any of the other Brittons in Pittsford, but it was a small town and they all came from NY, so it certainly seems possible. I’d love to know which one(s), if any!

Have any of you researched these Hillsdale/St. Joseph County Brittons? Does anyone know where in NY my John Britton came from and/or who his father was? Or if he was related to any of the other Brittons of Hillsdale or St. Joseph County?

Another mystery is the name of John Britton’s second-youngest son, my great-grandfather: Jairus (spelled Jarius, Jerris, Jerius, Jervis on various documents) Parker Britton, b. MI, October 1855. On the 1845 MI census there’s a Jairus Parker (from NY) and Jairus Parker, Jr., in Sturgis, MI, and the 1860 US census lists a Jairus Parker, 67, b. NY, in White Pigeon with his wife Sarah (nee Whaley, b MA). Family tradition has it that Jairus was b. in White Pigeon.

I can’t find a connection between these Parkers and my Brittons, but it would seem they might be related or connected by marriage. Or maybe John Britton admired Jairus Parker so much that he named his son after him. I understand that in some cultures (e.g., Irish) children born out of wedlock were named after the father even if the mother didn’t marry him, but since Jairus was John and Elmira’s 5th child, that seems unlikely.

Sorry this is so long, but I figure the more info I provide, the easier it will be for others to see if we have a connection. Thanks in advance for any help or clues anyone can give me.

Today is my dad’s 90th birthday, and I’m posting this in his honor. He’s the one who started me on this family history journey when he started researching the Brittons the old-fashioned way (pre-Internet) back in the early 70s.
Anyone related to the Britten's in Arkansas???

Looking for any information or relatives of my great-grandparents Lillie Britten and I think her husband name was Charlie Britten. They lived in a small town in Arkansas called Altheimer. Most of our family is located in Altheimer, AR and Pine Bluff, AR. I know of some relatives in San Francisco, CA where my late grandfather Charlie Brittten (one of her sons) stayed.
Just trying to get more history about them and their parents and so on. If anyone knows anything, please respond.
