Charles b@1780?

Hey there! Trying to go backwards up the tree, and have stalled at Charles Brittan, b@ 1780. He married Elizabeth Randall, also b@1780, and had a son, also named Charles, born @1804. I have a fair lead of what happens after that, but I'm trying to track the Brittans prior to Charles (the first). Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Morgan

.. there is a slim possibility that somewhere back, the last name was changed from "England" to "Brittan", as both were the names of the country and interchangeable.

The Whole Story

I want to post this on the Ancestry message boards, in case others reading know a piece of the story.

My great-grandfather was born Levi Hart Woodruff. He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania on September 30, 1878. He was an extremely secretive man and with good reason.

His first “secret” wife was a woman named Annie F. Myers. She committed suicide in 1905. Levi and Annie had two children. Levi abandoned those children with Annie’s father and “skipped town”. My grandfather (by Levi’s third and final wife), Robert Woodruff, did not realize that his father had previous marriages or that he had two half-siblings until he was in his late 70s. Levi never spoke about any previous marriages or children. When in his late 70s, my grandfather met his half-sister from this marriage for the first time. Sadly, his half brother had died shortly before.

The details about my great-grandfather’s life, from 1905-1920, are even more confusing than the rest of his life. I have been trying to learn more by tracing him through surviving records. He changed his name from Levi Woodruff to Horace Woodruff (“Horace” was the name of his first child with Annie who died in infancy. I assume this is the significance of adopting the alias Horace). I assume that both the alias and the change in location were to avoid the Chester County authorities who were looking for him regarding the abandoned children.

Just LAST WEEK, I found out that Horace Woodruff had a second “secret” “marriage”. Horace Woodruff and Maggie Benjamin filled out a marriage application in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1908! This might account for some of Horace’s missing time. Interestingly enough, the bottom portion of the marriage application was never completed – the implication being that they applied for the marriage license but never went through with the wedding. I almost stopped looking for more. I had successfully found my great-grandfather’s ex-fiance, just an interesting piece of family trivia and another one of his secrets. Then I looked in the 1910 census.

In 1910 there is a “Margaret Woodruff” working for a hotel in Phoenixville, PA. She reports that she is married (although her husband is not listed in the census with her. Indeed, I have never been able to find my great-grandfather in the 1910 census. He literally vanishes from all records between 1908-1920). Margaret Woodruff states that she has been married for two years, which would be accurate based on the timing of the marriage license application. She also states that she has four living children. It seemed like this might be the same woman but I needed more proof. Then I went to the 1920 census.

In 1920, “Margaret Woodruff” has reverted back to “Maggie J Benjamin” and is still working at the same hotel. She is again using the same name as the on the 1908 marriage license application. This has to be the same woman! The fascinating thing is she states she is a widow. She is NOT a widow (well, she could be a widow from her first marriage to John Frank Benjamin, but not Horace’s widow). One, she was never legally married to my great-grandfather. Two, my great-grandfather was alive, living in Montgomery County, and married to yet ANOTHER woman – Minerva G. Jacobs, my great-grandmother!

Since last week, I haven’t been able to find out too much about the Benjamin family. In the 1900 census J Frank Benjamin (John Frank Benjamin) and Margaret Benjamin state they have been married for four years, which puts their marriage at about 1896. Their two oldest children, Thomas and Anna are living at home with them (Bertha isn’t born yet, nor is the unidentified fourth child). John Frank Benjamin reports that he was born in 1872 in Pennsylvania – no further birth information. He states his father was born in England and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. I have never seen John Frank Benjamin’s death record nor do I know where he is buried. Assumedly he dies between 1900-1908. Maggie’s maiden name was Margaret Jane Brittian. She was born August 18, 1870 in Ireland. She died March 15, 1951 and is buried in Port Kennedy, Pennsylvania. Her mother E A Brittian also immigrated to the United States and lived in the Phoenixville, PA area. According to family trees on Ancestry.com, Maggie and John had THREE living children (not four) – Thomas Frank Benjamin born August 7, 1896 who married Winifred Margaret Murphy and had at least seven children, Anna Benjamin born June 1, 1898 who married Norman Myers, and Bertha Benjamin born June 9, 1901 who married Unknown and had eight children. I know that some of these Benjamin grandchildren are still living in the Phoenixville, PA area.

I have so many questions…Did my great-grandfather and Maggie actually have a wedding ceremony? If so, why didn’t they return the bottom portion of the marriage application? Could the missing fourth living child, reported in the 1910 census, actually be my grandfather’s half-sibling? Did Maggie claim she was Margaret Woodruff, married to my great-grandfather, because she was pregnant with his child? The fourth child was living in 1910 where did he/she go? Did Maggie think she was a widow in the 1910 census because John had died or did she think that Horace was dead? Did she know he was just a few miles away married yet again? Where did my grandfather go between his “marriage” to Maggie and his marriage to my great-grandmother? My grandfather and his siblings from his third marriage did not know anything about his past. Horace kept it all a secret.

Thanks,

Tracey
I have been trying to find a connection between the Cole's and the Brittains, but with no luck. Eliza Bowman is my husbands g-grandmother. What does the " P" stand for in his name? Can you tell me Mary Elizabeth Cole's birth date? I have a Mary (?Jane) Cole born to Eliza in May 1873. This was well after John Jack Cole died, and Eliza had 3 other children after her. Are we talking about the same people? And were the other children James's also? I have recently found out that the Cole's were indentured servents that were slaves on Jim Brittains land, and that Hawk Bowman was (Eliza's father was the 1st person to be burried in that families cemetery. Does any of this sound familiar?

Hi James,
Here is a copy of an e-mail that I recieved from another cousin. You can read it & make your own judgements. ~ Maria

I went to Harlan to get some answers on Mary Britton today. I'm keeping a little file of what I find out and sometimes I may state something that will change as I keep on writing. This is what I wrote today. Let me know if anything is familiar.

" Today I went to Harlan to question my Aunt Chloe about Mary Britton. I was told that James said when making his will that he "fathered" and "adopted" Mary and he was certain of that he was the father.

I was also told that Aunt Sug had a son (couldn't recall the name) lived in Louisville and worked for Kentucky Utilities (KU). He had a son named Martin that Josephine played with when they went to VA to visit Mary Thompson. Martin must have been close to the same age as young Josephine.

I also was told that the woman (Nancy Barbour) that Hawk Bowman married (parents of Eliza Cole) left and went back to Holland where she came from. I don't know about the children whether they all stayed here or if some went back with her. I’m real anxious to trace this down and find out the truth about this family.

Josephine told me that Mary was a fine looking woman and very proud about the way she dressed and acted. She said that she had Brittain features."

I started to put a query on , and found yours. It sounds closer to mine, than any I have seen. I know very little for certain about my great-grandmother, Margaret Brittian, except that she married William Henry Jackson in 1870 in Pa. and they became the parents of three little girls, Christine, Mary Ann and Isabella (my grandmother), and died when my grandmother was a baby. I have been told that she was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, and died in Hazelton, Luzerne, Pa. and that her father's name was Andrew Brittian. I don't even know the correct way that she spelled her last name. Please let me hear from you.
