Looking for descendants of Jacob Pate and Zilla Broach, Colonial Virginia

Jacob Pate married Zilla Broach in Virginia. He was the son of Matthew Pate and grandson of Col. Thomas Pate. He died in Surry County, Virginia, in 1752.

Caution: There may be more misinformation about this family on the Internet, particularly Jacob and Zilla, than any other American Pate family. This is primarily due to the booklet published by John Ben Pate c. 1915. This work should be disregarded concerning this family and its ancestry. For a more reliable source about the descendants of Matthew Pate and Anne Read, parents of Jacob, consult the William & Mary Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol XII, 1904, pgs. 119-120 and 196-198, which is available on the Internet.

Col. Thomas Pate was born in England c. 1650, emigrated to Colonial Virginia in 1672, and inherited a 2100-acre tobacco plantation in Gloucester County. About 1690, he started ferry operations across the York River to what became the port city of Yorktown, primarily for export of tobacco to England. By 1694, he also owned an ordinary (inn) at the port of Yorktown, where he died in 1703.

He held a number of civil and military positions in Gloucester County, representing the county in the House of Burgesses in 1684. He was a church warden and vestryman of the Petsworth Parish Church in Gloucester for at least seven years. Nathaniel Bacon, leader of Bacon's Rebellion, died in Col. Pate's home in 1676.

He married Elizabeth (surname unknown) c. 1675. They apparently had six children, who were all baptized at Abingdon Parish Church. Their children, as recorded in the church's registry, were:
John -- born 1677, died 1706 (His daughter Sarah married Col. Wilson Cary c. 1728.)
[likely daughter] -- 1679/80 (name illegible)
Elizabeth -- born 1680
Mary -- born 1684
Matthew -- born 1686 (see list of children below)
William -- born 1689

Matthew Pate married Anne Read c. 1710, grandaughter of Col. George Read, greatgreat-grandfaher of George Washington. Here are their children:
Jacob -- married Zilla Broach. Died 1752, Surry County, Virginia. [They were not the parents of Rev. William Pate d. 1837 in Georgia.]
Sarah -- married William Anderson 1736-7
Jeremiah -- married (?) Bender
Matthew married (?) Buck
Rebecca -- married George Newell
Rachel -- married 1. Robert Robinson, 2. John Warrington
Thomas -- born 1728, died 1814, married Hannah Philips Williams (a widow)

This Thomas Pate family remains an unsolved mystery regarding its present-day ancestors, despite the efforts of the greatest Pate genealogists in its history, such as the late Jinks Pate-Lee, Joel Pate, and Dr. Jim Peacock. Traditional genealogy using both family and public records is now providing very little information. It appears that our best hope to link present-day Pate families to this early American family is through genetic genealogy, or DNA analysis.

Fortunately, we have a ready resource for genetic genealogy through our Pate DNA Project. Though founded only three years ago, we have 110 members, and we are certain that a descendant of this family can be linked to one of the family lines in our Project.

If you know, or if you are personally, a documented male Pate descendant of this family, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Grants for DNA tests are available through the generosity of our Project's members for any man who may need assistance in purchasing the test or who would otherwise have no interest in joining. Inquiries to me will be held in strictest confidence by the administrators of the Project.

For all descendants of Col. Thomas Pate, the Pate DNA Project, through its Pate Genealogical Convocation, has placed an impressive memorial marker for him in the beautiful and historic cemetery of Grace Episcopal Church (the original York Parish Church) in Yorktown. This marker was placed in September 2008 in one of the most desirable places in the cemetery, close to the church and next to the gravestone for George Read, gg-gf of George Washington.

I have also prepared a timeline for the life of Col. Thomas Pate, which I believe is the most complete and comprehensive study of his history and accomplishments ever compiled. Since it is lengthy (three pages) and the format would not present well on this website, I will send a copy of it by email attachment (PDF), to anyone who sends me an email requesting it.

For any descendant, this is a great opportunity to make a significant and unique contribution to Pate genealogy, helping solve one of its oldest and most difficult mysteries.

I have a Georgia Broach b abt 1860/1861 in King & Queene. She marr Thornton Longest abt 1880. He was the son of John Longest. Thornton & Georgia had a dau E. T. ( don't have her name ) b abt 1881. She marr E. T. Coghill 28 Dec 1904. Strange they had the same intials. He was the son of Thomas A. Coghill & Ella J. Munday. I don't have children for them. Is this your Georgianna? Any info on her appreciated as I don't have parents or siblings for her. I am also seeking info on Chaney Broach b abt 1780 in Essex. He marr Frances Fletcher. Seeking the names of their parents & siblings. Their dau Isabella Jane b abt 1816 marr Joseph Crouch. Need Joseph's prents & siblings. Have children for him & Isabella. Also need info on Sarah A. Broach b abt 1850 in Essex. She marr Dabney Brooks . Need their parents & siblings. Their son Lally b abt 1875 marr M. E. Longest ( need her name ) 27 Dec 1894. She was the dau of George W. My g-g-g-great grandfather was Abner Broach (born about 1760) and my g-g-great grandfather was his son Abner Broach Jr (born about 1791).

I see that many researchers believe that the elder Abner's father was John Broach of King & Queen County but I have yet to find that proof.

Hi; You might find some of the names you are looking for under Broatch in Dumfries. The American line seems to have dropped the 'T' when the came over before spelling was standardized.

I have g.g.grandmother Margaret Broach who m. John Gray in Dumfries. The family emigrated to New Zealand, mid 1800s.
Children born in Scotland were Margaret, Roseanne and Daniel.

married Samuel J. Pate on 13 Feb 1737 in Bedford, Virginia.
Samuel Jacob Pate was born in 1710.

BTW John Broach, the doctor, of Williamsburg was French Huguenot most likely. It was probably his son, John Jr who moved to New Kent (Eltham area), he may have been in K&Q thru the family of his wife Mary Jones (daug of Rice Jones, old Essex Co). His son Rice Broach was most likely born in K&Q 1680-1684

My mother was a Broach, my g farther was William Henley Broach, my gg farther was Augustine Broach. I tracked them back to 1600s. John Broach from Jamestown ended up in King & Queen County VA, and as far as I know all of the VA broaches came from him. Another Broach came here from England in the 1600s as a convict and was sent to Georgia

Looking for information about the Broats family living in Dumfriesshire Scotland at least before the 1770's. Broats apparently was corrupted to Broach either before or at least by the time the family moved to the American colonies (date unknown).

I have a Joseph Crouch who married a Jane Broach. They had a son, born 1852, named John, who married the daughter of Phillip Tate and Polly Broach, In 1880 Phillip and Polly were living at Newtown, King and Queen, virginia. he was 56 and she was 62.

have communicated with EC and Sonny Brooks in the past.
Tax and Census records, as well as Andrew Broach's will
certainly suggest that Benoni was Andrew's father but I have no concrete evidence to support that. Have you made any progress in your research?? I had (have) a hunch that
Benoni's wifes maiden name could be Martin, but it is only a
thought. Would love to share information.

Sonny Brooks gave me a copy of Andrew's Will, in his Will he states that he gave GW Broach the land on which GW was then living, and he refers it the land as "land that I got from Benoni Broach" but he does not come out and say that Benoni was his father, or even his Uncle, or what-ever...how did you prove that Andrew was the son of Benoni???Mac

I am looking for info on an Adam Broach that had a daughter Eleanor born abt. 1761. From Rev. War records she filed in N.J.for a pension for her husband William Lagere/Legere. She had 1 child Elizabeth born 1786. She also had other children living with her that we think where grandchildren of Adam Broach. Adam Williamson 1786, Sarah Williamson 1770, Hannah Williamson 1772, Abraham Williamson 1773, Jacob Williamson 1776, Sarah Flagg 1785 and Amos Flagg 1788. I would be very surprised if we weren't related somehow. Most of my Broach family were from the Cleveland and Dallas counties. I don't have the people you mentioned in my files, but I'm sure that you are on the right track. Do you have any dates for your ancestors? We might be able to look them up in the census records. I think if you could find the parents of W. Dillard Broach, you'll find the connection.

Pam,,,I took my trip to Roanoke , and the person I went to see , Dilla Mae Marshall, is related to you and to me. I believe your Aunt Tessie coresponds with her. My gggrandfather was William Wesley Broach b. around 1880-1890? in NC or SC. Married Liddie Loraine Parker. Had 3 children Juanita Rosemond Broach (my ggrandmother lived Aug 1911 - Aug 1987),and her two brothers James Kenneth Broach, and Raymond Broach all born in Florence County, SC. Anyone have any info on this family??

I don't know of any Poston's in my family. I haven't heard of Rosa Broach, the closest name would be Juanita Rosemond Broach, but she married a Collins first and then a Dozier. I will recheck my records and files for her name. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I'm also looking for Broach members in Johnson Cty AR. My Ggrandfather James W Chappell married Elizabeth J Broach in that county. Their son Jefferson Davis (Jeff) Chappell is my grandfather.

I can't seem to find anything on James or Elizabeth. Do you have an Elizabeth in any of your lines? I believe she was born ABT 1860.
