Further on Robert Brodnax. I did not realize that Robert had a brother called Edward Travis because Robert apparently also named his son Edward Travis so I had assumed that the uncle and nephew were the same person. (However, as I have said, the Brodnaxes seem very fond of reusing names so it's not surprising.) Edward Travis the nephew is my direct ancestor; I am amused to find that through Edward Travis the uncle, I ended up with a governor of North Carolina with the middle name of Brodnax. Kind of fun. Thank you to the Glenn family researcher for giving me this info. Anyone who wants to work backward from Robert and Edward Travis (both uncle and nephew), here's the line back to Jamestown as I understand it. They were the sons of William Edward Brodnax (born in 1755 in Dinwiddie County, VA and died in 1831 in Brunswick County, VA) and Sarah Eppes Jones. William Edward was the son of William Brodnax (born 1708 on Jamestown Island, James City County, VA and died Jan 12 1771 in Brunswick County, Virginia) and Ann Hall. William's parents were another William and Rebecca Champion Travis. It looks as if Rebecca was born in Virginia but there seems to be some confusion about her and her antecedents. There is an Elizabeth Champion who married an Edward Travis as well as a Rebecca Champion who married an Edward Travis. It has been suggested elsewhere that Elizabeth and Rebecca may be the same person, which I think is possible since one of her Brodnax children is named Elizabeth Rebecca. The sequence of events that Rebecca married 1) Edward Travis and 2) William Brodnax and had children with both men seems pretty definite. There was an Edward Travis who died in 1700 and a Brodnax daughter who was born in 1702, so presumably Rebecca was married to the Edward who died in 1700, then at some point in 1700 or 1701 married William Brodnax. At that period remarriage frequently did happen fast, so this seems credible. This William Brodnax was born in the village of Godmersham in Kent, England on February 28, 1674; he died in Jamestown on February 16, 1722. I have not found a record of when he immigrated, but it must have been some time at least 9 months prior to the birth of his daughter Elizabeth Rebecca in 1702, since she was the daughter of Jamestown resident Rebecca Champion Travis Brodnax.
