The perported Hessian soldier ( this is questioned) was, of course, indentured to the British army. The one in my branch of the family tree was Jacob. This branch migrated through Staunton VA and Montgomery Countu (Blacksburg) VA. They owned a huge farm, on a portion of which now sits Va. Tech. There is a Broce drive directly behind the college. My great grandfather (George Washington Broce and a brother were going to California during the Gold Rush via the Old Jonesboro Road which ran through a settlement near Bristol in East Tennessee later named Paperville for the paper mill the family built on the South Holston River. He was tired of traveling and settled there. The brother went on to California, thus the Broces there. I have traced our name to Croatia. There is a Broce Village there, a small fishing village. It was originally (this is a phonetic spelling) Brothze). The Latvians changed the spelling and pronunciation. (Data from a Croatian web page). When my husband and I were in Croatia on a cruise, our local guide had been to the village many times fishing with his father and grandfather. He said that it is beautiful. He was so happy to meet me he was telling every Croatian we ran into, "She is from BROTHZE!! She is from BROTHZE!!" I muttered something like, "Not recently", but he really did make me feel good and I thanked him for the welcome. My dream is to travel there next year. Hope this helps. Linda Broce Hopkins
