I am tring to connect some brockways' to my culhane family. I have several letters in my posession from a Delia Whitney. Maiden name brockway addressed to my grandfather william edward Culhane. She states that she is his sister-in-law. William's wife's name was Myrtle Eliza Carter. She was married to a George Cole before my grandfather. I have another letter from Myrtle's sister Ella, to my grandfather after Myrtle's death stating at least she still has her sister Delia, they are close even though they didn't grow up together. I've tracked Delia's family and her parent's are Samuel Brockway (1851 IL) and Melinda Lucinda Prim (or Trim) (1852 Laporte, IN). I found one sib for delia, who is Arthur (or anton) Jewett 1890 MI, from Melinda's second marriage to Jonas Jewett in 1882 Forman, Lake, MI. Delia was married to James Aaron Whitney in 1897.

Can anyone make a connection for me. I'm at my witts end. The only ones left in family is my dad and aunt and they don't recall ever hearing of a delia.

It has been some years since this posting but if Ann Crossley sees my response she can contact me at wombat12@telus.net Frank Brockway's wife's maiden name was THECKSTONE. She and Arthur were married in 1884 at Bury, Lancashire. The Theckford appears to have been incorporated into her name after she and Arthur emmigrated to the USA. She was born 1862 at Stockport, Cheshire, England. Frank Brockway was born 1861 at Tisbury, Wiltshire. There's lots more to this family.

Re: David Brockway & Clarissa Taylor, Wilna, NY

Yes, it is true that Clarissa [Taylor] Brockway did in fact remarry after David Brockway died.

Her daughter Sylvia's 1915 Michigan death certificate shows her parents names as David Brockway and "Claracy Bates". The death certificate shows Sylvia, David and Claracy (Clarissa) were all born in NY. I also located Sylvia's obituary which although it does not give her maiden name of Brockway, it does confirm she was born in Wilna, NY.

Going back to Clarissa's final resting place, she is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Le Sueur Co, MN showing dates 1816-1898 only, have verified existence of a grave marker.

Have been told that in the Hayes cemetery/Burghill cemetery there is a poem about Abigail Brockway Jones that is etched into a rock or slate. This poem is said to have been written by Locke Miller. Does anyone have a copy of this poem?
Pomala Morin Black

Since Wolston Brockway Sr. bought property in CT in 1659, he would have had to be at least 21 years of age. That puts him born about 1637-8.

Stockton Daily Independent
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
24-31 MAY 1869

WILL of THE LATE S.W. BROCKWAY -- We clip from the 'Bulletin' of May 26th: The last will of S.W. BROCKWAY was filed for probate yesterday. Testator bequeaths:
-To his wife, Augusta M.H. BROCKWAY, $20,000 in gold coin and the homestead in Mokelumne Hill, Calaveras county, together with the furniture and other contents
-To his mother, Susannah BROCKWAY, $100
-To his brother John S. BROCKWAY, $200
-To his brother, Julius, $100 and his gold-headed cane
-To his brother David, $100
-To his sisters Polly JONES, Sally Ann ALLEN and Susan Maria WHITE, $100 each
-To Sue A. BROCKWAY, widow of his bother O.P. BROCKWAY, $100, unless she dies before the probate of this will, in which case this $100 shall go to his wife, Augusta M.H.

All the rest of his property of all kinds he bequeaths to his wife Augusta, and appoints her sole executrix without bonds. Should any of his legatees attempt to break his will, their legacy is thereby forfeited in favor of his wife. He requests his wife to advise with Y.K. WILSON as attorney, and Dr. LOHR as friend, in her duties as executrix. He wishes his body to be taken for burial to Stephentown, Renssalaer county, New York, and interred in the Baptist burial ground, and that a monument be erected over his remains.
In the event of the death of his wife Augusta without issue, all his property is to go to his said brothers and sisters in equal shares, except that his brother John is to have $1000 more than the rest. If he have an heir, then all the property of his wife is to go to such heir, instead of his brother and sisters, after her death.

The will is dated at Mokelumne Hill, Jan. 21, 1865, and witnessed by H.J. TILDEN and Charles FAVILE.

Brockway in El Paso Tx, 1909 - 1930

((cross posted from El Paso County Board))
I am looking for several members of my Brockway line that possibly were in El Paso at the turn of the last century.
This is what I know:
1. William Brockway, (Lyman, Epharim, Joseph, Wolston, Samuel, Wolston, Wolston, William) b: 1852 NY; married Sarah Williams (James, John) b:1857 in MA; Children believed to be Wesley Daniel, William and Carmen (the last two based only on photo evidence).
2. William (& family?) went to Mexico in 1890s; William, Jr & Carmen may have been born in Mexico/TX. I know one son Wesley Daniel Brockway b:1878 (my GF) in NY, married Lucina Estrada in Cardenas, San Luis Potosi, Mexico in 1898.
3. William marries 2nd wife Delfina in Mexico in 1910
4. A Sadie/Sarah Brockway, widow of William, shows up in El Paso city directories from 1909 to 1912
5. In the 1911 & 1912 city directory she is listed again as Sarah, widow of William with a William Jr, a Miss Carmen and a Miss Sadie
6. I have not been able to fine them in the 1910 Federal Census.
7. I have an El Paso death certificate (Apr 9 1928) for a Lucille Watson, b: Oct 2 1915, Daughter of John Watson, b: NY, and Carmen Brockway, b: Mexico. Burial listed as Concordia - Cath, Apr 11 1928, I have not found census record for these either.
8. My grandmother Lucina and her children were also in Texas for a time between 1910 and 1914 based on family stories.

Would appreciate any fill in information. Would especially like confirmation of City Directory information with I have from notes I took before I had some of the names tied in. I do not have an address for the 1911/12 entries.

Does anyone have information of these Brockways in El Paso that would show that they are NOT the family I am looking for?

Thanks,

Wes Brockway
Florida
I am looking for information on Lewis Brockway... he was born in New York in the early 1800's and died in MI in the mid-1800's. Lewis is the founder of the township I live in, and at one point he purchased the property I know live on. I believe he was a lumberman, clearing up the land to sell to the farmers. I would love to know more about him.

Thanks!

Lisa

I saw a posting you made on this. Here is some info:

Ophelia Sanger Gray -- born Sangerville, ME. Joseph Brockway was one of the first settlers of Sangerville, which was settled primarily by residents of Sherborne, MA under proprietership of Mr. Sanger, who does not appear to ever have lived there. My ancestor A.K.P. settled there from Paris, ME.

Sherborn is next to Framingham. The Brockway family was not long in New Hampshire and one possibility for the Framingham marriage and Sangerville settlement was the Sherborn connection. Certainly it was not the Gray's, who were originally from Worcester.

m. Albion King Paris (A.K.P.) Gray, lawyer/farmer/freemason.

Lived at 5 Pine Street in Dover-Foxcroft ("Graywell") on the road to East Sangerville.

Ophelia was "Guardian" of the "Lyceum" of Spiritualists in Foxcroft -- listed in 1871 yearbook.

Buried in Knowlton Mills Cemetery, East Sangerville. Stone still standing.

Children:

Amlin Albion - became Superintendant of the Millville Rubberworks, Millville (Blackstone) MA and lived in Woonsocket, RI. Buried Smithfield, RI.

Albion Dwight - became headmaster of boy's school in Philadelphia, one child died young, buried at Knowlton Mills.

Anna Ophelia -- married twice, no issue. Raised nephew Leslie son of Wallace Gray at "Graywell". Buried at Knowlton Mills.

Was likely well to do and reasonably educated. Sons each completed academy level education.

Multiple marriages between members of Ophelia's family and members of A.K.P.'s (children of Levi Gray). Not many eligible batchelors in East Sangerville!.

Interested in any other information you might have on Levi or A.K.P. Gray and family.

Cheryl,

I can't give you any details right now on names and dates, but I have a Brockway heritage. Check Brockways in Ripon, WI. My daughter went to the present-day Ripon College, Ripon, WI, which I believe is in Fond du Lac Co. It was
originally named Brockway College. There is a graveyard there with many Brockway gravesites. I went through and made a list of all of the Brockways buried there about 8 years ago, but can't find it in my database tonight. I
will see if I can dig it out of my boxes. You might want to contact a historian at the college to see if they have the information. Check out this website &
here's a clip from the website I pasted below.

"The serene campus of Ripon College, a fine, private liberal arts school, is just west of the business district. In 1851, David Mapes and a group of townspeople founded the college on top of the hill, chartered on January 29, 1851 as Brockway College. Mapes, who was president of the first board of trustees, donated an acre of land on the highest point in the village of Ripon. To raise money for the college, the trustees issued stock and offered to name
the institution after the person who bought the largest amount. William Brockway took the honor with just over $300 in stock and the school was incorporated as Brockway College. In 1864 the name was changed to Ripon College. Today, the campus stands prominently on top of the hill, with 22 noble buildings, beautifully landscaped courtyards, seldom surpassed by any other college campus in the country."

(and I personally can attest to that last statment - simply beautiful!"
http://www.riponmainst.com/riponmainst/hist.html

Hope this helps

Betsy Ann Brockway Knapp and descendants

Betsy Ann Brockway is another daughter of Lebbious Brockway and Roxanne Brown. She was born around 1820 and died in 1846.

I have found a reference in the "Portrait and Biographical Album of Ingham and Livingston Counties, Michigan" published in 1891 by the Chapman Brothers.

On pages 779 - 781, it describes the family and descendants of William Knapp and Betsy Ann Brockway. They married in 1841 and had one son, Theodore B. Knapp in 1842. After Betsy's death in 1846, William remarried to Elizabeth Green and had several more children while residing in Howell, Livingston County, Michigan.

Theodore Knapp married Emma Keith. Together they had two children - Estella Knapp and Walter William Knapp. I have pictures of Stella and Walter Knapp that were passed down in a photo album from Betsy Ann's brother Urson Brockway. I may even have a picture of Theodore but most of the pictures are unidentified.

Stella Knapp was born in 1864 in New York to Edward Miller Beurmann and they had two children, Max and Ronald.

Walter Knapp married Grace Fishbeck and had two children - Julia and Charles.

Anyway, if anyone has more information, I would love to hear. I can also share the photos, maybe a connection can be made.

Mark Brockway
Laurel, MD

I amy have a picture of Eudora but I am not sure.

There was a family album passed down with mostly unidentified photos in it. I believe the album was passed down from Urson Brockway to his son Frank Brockway and on from there. Consequently, it has photos of Urson's siblings, and nephews, nieces or grand-nephews, grand-nieces, etc. Urson was another son from Lebbious Brockway and Roxanne Brown.

Anyway, the picture has a label of Dora Brockway, now Mrs. Davis. I am speculating that Dora is Eudora. I have been unable to find a Dora that married a Davis. Can anyone make that connection? As I said in the original post, Eudora was born around 1846 in New York.

I am partly answering my own question.

I found that Roxana Anderson, mother of Niles and Louise, moved in with one of her other sons, Heny, in Elba, Genesee, NY in 1860.

The household is:

Henry Brockway, head, age 36, master carpenter
Rhoda (King) Brockway, wife, age 33
Louisa Brockway, daughter, age 11
Frank Brockway, son, age 8
George Brockway, son, age 6
Joel King, father-in-law, age 57, shoemaker
Walter King, brother-in-law?, age ??
Roxana Anderson, age 67

I haven't been able to locate an 1870 census record for the Henry Brockway family in Elba. He is still in Elba in 1880 and until his death in 1911. Roxanna could still be with his family in 1870.

Niles Brockway and Louise Brockway

I am trying to track down what became of Niles Brockway's family after he passed and what became of Louise (Louisa) Brockway. Louise and Niles Brockway are both children (among others) of Lebbious Brockway and Roxanne Brown.

I have a Niles Brockway household that is resident in Bennington, Wyoming NY in 1850. Present in the household are:

Niles Brockway, age 32
Mary Ann Brockway, age 29 (wife)
Eudora A. Brockway, age 4 (daughter)
Roxanna Anderson, age 58, mother of Niles (apparently Roxanne married again after Lebbious passed in 1833)
Louisa Brockway, age 22, sister of Niles, daughter of Roxanne

I have heard (not sure where): that Niles passed away in 1856, Louise in 1876 and Roxanne in 1879.

In 1860, Mary Ann appears in Pike, Wyoming, New York with her two children.

Mary Ann Brockway, age 38
Eudora Brockway, age 14
Elvin Brockway, age 9

I have lost track of Louise and Roxanne at this point. Does Roxanne marry her third husband before passing? Does Louise ever get married before passing?

What becomes of Mary Ann and her family?

Thanks for any help.

Mark Brockway
Laurel, MD

Hi Karen,
Happy new year! Thank you for your message, and kind offer of help. I have done a lot of BROCKWAY research, and am always trying to fill in gaps. I'd like to compare notes on our families, but have way too much to fit in here.

Since so many of us are researching the same families, I'll list my abbreviated family sheets for William BROCKWAY & Bridget WALLER, with footnotes only for the husband & wife. I do have much more, including detailed documentation. You may reach me through the forum or by email, at ettinger@optonline.net.
Hi there!

I'm trying to help out my mother, who is working on honoring the Civil War veterans buried in Bridgewater, Oneida County, NY. According to cemetery records, there is a Leubbeus Brockway listed as a Civil War veteran. Unfortunately, I have no dates for this individual, or any other information.

I have not yet been able to locate any documentation for this individual, and was hoping that someone here would recognize this individual. ANY information you can give would be a great help!

Ann McMillin

Not related.
The community library in Ketchum has a collection of photographs, family histories, and other misc. docs from Blaine County. Among the photos are school pictures with Ruby, Ethel and Alice Brockway. Also, Morris Neilson. If the Brockway family lived in Ketchum, Hailey area it would be worth your time to contact the library (link below) and ask them what they may have related to your family.

Online:

http://www.thecommunitylibrary.org/catalog/

Enter surname in search.
Some of the photos have been scanned, not all. They will provide copies for a fee.
