Ralph, I too found this info about John Louis being son of Jean Bpt, Brodeur and Eliz Ulrich on other sites, but when it was posted by you on the LDS site others could have incorporated it as well, and it then keeps getting passed around. It's really important to verify info. before assuming it's correct. It very well could be true, but we just aren't able to prove it yet. I did tell this to the nun in Iowa, I didn't realize she was going to give copies of my research to so many people. If there is anyone who has any documentation for this info I would be really happy to see it! It would solve a 20 year mystery!

Ralph, I meant to say the LDS site. I'm not sure what is confusing. I spent years researching this family and traveling all over Wisconsin, but never was able to find anything that verified that John Louis LaVigne's parent's were John Baptiste Brodeur LaVigne and Eliz Ulrich, nor anything to connect him to the other children. Have you found some documentation to support this?

Ralph, the information that you obtained from the nun was originally sent to her from me, in a very condensed form. John Louis LaVinge is my great great grandfather. As I told you earlier the John Louis connection to Jean Bpt. Brodeur LaVigne was only speculative and not yet proven. There are baptismal certificates for Charles, Elizabeth, Mathiu, and Sophie from St. John's The Evangelist, and birth certificates for Elizabeth and Sophie. There aren't any of these for John Louis. Do you have some other evidence to support this? This info re: John Louis was also posted on MGS site.

Thanks for the reply. I have a public tree on ancestry that I'm working on, the Cronk family tree. Do you have a copy of john's obit? I do have obit and death certificate for elizabeth. I was hoping that the linda who posted a previous message would see this. It sounds like she has a baptism record for a sibling, charles, who was baptized in 1833 at age 23. I have birth date of 1833 for elizabeth so it seems at least plausible:)
My email is ncronk99@gmail.com and I sure would like to know what happened to their father. I have a nice article about dutchman's creek and their grandfather peter ulrich, if you haven't seen it I would be happy to share.
Nancy

Linda, do you have a copy of the baptism record for Charles? I would love to have a copy of it if you don't mind sharing. I did not have the name Charles in my records so this is quite exciting! I have approximate dates for Sophia and Elizabeth but have not yet obtained records. Where Charles' record came from may be a good place to start looking for the others' records.
Thanks for your time.
Nancy

I was told by someone on the Brothers Message Board that I should look in the Brodeur Message Board as she thought Brothers may have been Brodeur in Quebec. Does this ring true with those of you that are related to Brodeur families?

I'm looking for my 3rd great grandmother, Sarah Brothers b: Dec __ 1828 somewhere in Canada that married Frederick Trombley/Tremblay b: abt 1826-1828 somewhere in Canada, and she died May 7, 1908 in Westfield, MA and is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Westfield, MA. Don't know her parents' names, and don't have WHERE she was married in Canada.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

To Debcarey600. I'm not sure why only now I found your message? I think we may have something in common. I have traced my line back to Jean-Baptiste as well. He came over on the Andre-a very young soldier. He married well. His wife, Marie Anne Messier, comes from a highly regarded family. They had 16 childred.I found six surviving males who all had large families. My line goes Ovide-Ambrose(3)-Ignace(3 or 4). My researh suggests he left France under less than happy events. On the day of his birth, his mother died - the same day his mother and father got married. He might have been 12 years old when he sailed to the new world. I've had fun digging into the history of France during that period. Maybe we could compare notes sometime. For this purpose you may email me direct at "michael.brodeur@att.net"

Hi,

I just read your message and was hoping you could help. I have been trying to find the exact name for the book that Clement Brodeur published. I read you had the book, can you give me the exact title so I may look it up?

Also, my 1st great grandmother was a Mary (Catherine?) Lavigne. Her father was John Cyprien Brodeur Lavigne and her mother was Julia Ladouceur, I believe both parents were born in Petite-Riviere, Charlevoix, Quebec.

I have not been able to confirm Mary's information. I have looked for birth, baptism and marriage records, and have found nothing. I believe Mary's father immigrated from Canada to Vermont, USA after his marriage to Julia Ladouceur and their first child Mary was born, but I have not been able to find any records for Mary before or after her marriage to my 1st great grandfather Thomas Lavoie. From what I could find she was born March 1871 in Granby, Prov of Quebec and married Thomas Lavoie on 21 Apr 1889, unsure if they married in Canada or USA (information was taken from census records). She died

Her grandfather was Jean Baptiste Brodeur Lavigne (b 1842, d 1912) and Julia Ladouceur (b 1850, d 1903).

If you had any information it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Diane

I am searching for information on Joseph Raphael Brodeur. He was born about 1847 in Canada, he lived in Ashton, Michigan and Cadillac, Michigan. He died 31 Dec 1916 in Cadillac, Michigan. I am updating cemetery records and I would like to know where he is buried. He has 3 children buried in Maple Hill Cemetery in Leroy, Michigan. His wife's name was Malvina. If you have any information, please let me know. The cemetery records are a mess, and they have him listed as a Veteran - but we don't have any record of him being buried there.
Thanks
Angie

I don't know if this will help, but I took a look around (what's available on the internet) to see if I could locate the surviving brother, August, listed in the 1895 obit. Ideally, finding data on him might be a backdoor to confirming parentage.

You've probably had a look already, and noticed this:

There is an entry for an Aug Lavine in the 1895 Wisconsin State Census, in Depere, Brown, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, there is little data on this census as a whole, no ages.

There is an August Lavine (on Ancestry.com transcribed as Sabine) in the 1880 Census in Wrightstown, Brown, Wisconsin, living with a son, Paul.

I noticed a 2 death record transcriptions (same person) on familysearch.org (Wisconsin Death) for an August Lavine/Lavigne (b abt 1804-06) in 1886. The actual records for the database are not available to view on line. I've found a good deal of erroneous transcriptions, until I can see the original and make my own assessment, I don't take it as fact. I'm driving at the perhaps the date was actually 1896, not 1886.

There's a death record of a Lissette Lavigne (1877) listing an August as her father.

I've researched on-site in this area. There is no choice is you want/need to do in-depth research. While the parish registers are on fiche and available to research on-site, 98% of them haven't nor will they ever be released to the LDS. Between the Green Bay diocese and the resources at UW-GB, you can find a great deal. I've had great success building families with the parish records. The GB diocese archivist generously allowed me 3 days in succession (I made a special trip to do the research) to review records.

Thanks for your reply. I do have 2 marriage records-neither the church record or the county record lists parents info. I haven't had time to be very involved in research lately but when I looked at my records actually I don't have the baptismal records for the first 2 children b. in Green Bay, as I do for several of the children b. in Port Edwards. That is a good suggestion, I'll have to check into the Green Bay church records further. I'll look again for the book too.

"I do have all those records already,"

Am I understanding correctly? You have the baptismal records for the first two born children, as well as the marriage record and there's no evidence or clues in any of them that can help document this line?

You can google to find the book. I found it easily, however Community Guidelines forbid commercial postings.

Whether or not you have this book, which I'm familiar with, you'll still need the afore mentioned document data to connect into a line.

The access to resources to accurately research French Canadian genealogy today are light years ahead over what was available in 1981, 1991, 2001, 2007. These types of compilations are filled with inaccuracies, much of it is anecdotal and without evidence. Researchers recognize this and utilize the incredible and solid resources available today.

Have you explored parish records for the marriage record of John Louis LaVigne to Mary Vieau in 1850? Finding this record is important.

It appears their first two children were born in Green Bay, Brown, Wisconsin.

Mary Magdelaine b 1851
John Baptiste Jean Louis, b 1852.

The exact birth dates can be found on familysearch.org.

I would search those 2 baptisms, particularly because other family members are typically godparents, especially to the first few children.

After locating the baptisms, then work back in the same parish register to locate the marriage.

The parish records for the Green Bay diocese for the most part, are not readily available by film or fiche from the LDS, but check in the card catalog on familysearch.org.

If there are no film or fiche to be found there, you can contact the GB diocese and have them search if you're not in the area. The data you already have will enable an archivist to search.
Here 's the link: http://www.gbdioc.org/what-the-church-can-do-for-you/genealo...

I am looking for parents of my gg grandfather John Louis LaVigne, b. ca 1811-1816 in Green Bay WI, and m. to Mary Vieau in Green Bay in 1850. He died in 1895 in Port Edwards WI; his obit said he had a brother August, who was still living in Green Bay. I believe his parents may have been Jean Baptiste Brodeur LaVigne m. to Eliz Ulrich or P. (? Pierre LaVigne), both early voyageurs from Canada but can't find any real proof for either. Family history says we are Broduer LaVignes. Also, can anyone tell me where to find Clement Brodeur's book? Earlier postings referred to several websites for Brodeur or Brodeur- LaVigne descendants but the web addresses are no longer current, does anyone have current website addresses?

When I spent 3 years in eastern France in the 1960's I asked people (natives)what the name meant. Mind you, the area has been depressed for centuries and it affects the attitudes, but I asked friends. The response: Yes, the books say lacemaker or whatever, but the slang is "fabricator of tale tales". I have no way of knowing how long this meaning existed, but I thought it was interesting because I enjoyed writing.

Thanks so much for sharing this info. with me. I'm glad you've verified all your sources. I've kept my own family tree private because I have found some things that are incorrect on other peoples trees and didn't want to pass on wrong information myself. I see there's another Rose and Rosalie in Eusebes line also. I felt like such an oddball growing up with the name Rosemary amongst all the Donnas, Karens,Kathys and Sandras I went to school with. This might sound a little morbid but I feel right at home with all these dead reletives. LOL!!!!!!!!!! Also thanks for the links to the DIT. name pages I'm sure they will be a big help. My Lussier ancestors were so much easier to trace than these ones. Hopefully the Champagnes will get easier now too. Thanks again Rose

Oh Wow thanks so much for the information. I've been trying to find them for a long time. I just found out 2 weeks ago at the American French Geneology Society in Woonsocket R.I. that Rosalie was my gr.grandmother. Some records can be very confusing. Wrong dates, name spellings, DIT names etc., and more Rosalies, Roselines, Rose this or that than I thought possable. I Didn't know Rose was such a popular name Back then. Even My Godmothers middle name was Rose, but she was a Phaneuf. I thought there was a Louis and an Ignace in there somewhere but hadn't gotten that far yet. Are we related somehow? If so do you have any more info on the family. I've found Some censeses with a Joseph and Rosalie Champagne on Nipissing Indian Reservation but am unsure if its them. Thanks again Rose

Thank you for your quick response, this research can be frustrating. I unfortunately don't know much french and have a little trouble translating some of the documents I find. I had no idea Pierre and Eusebe had died at the time of their marriage. Also happy to have the correct spelling for Trouillet. I have other people with Lajeunesse in my lineage. As far as the Digeur name goes some documents have this as Degner, and what looks like Digue. I've also come across a few things with Dier and Larose. It's all very confusing. I'll check out roots web for Eusebe's line. thanks again. Rose
