Hi Linda,

I will copy your inquiry to my brothers in Yorkshire and New Zealand as I know that they have delved into the family history.

It would appear that use of the E was seen as optional to our ancestors. I understand that our name also picked up the extra letter at some time in the 1800's. I supose they had fewer forms to complete in those days.
