McElhatton, McElhattan, McIlhatton are the anglicised versions of the Gaelic surname Mac Goilla Chatain which means son of a follower of Saint Chatain. The name is Scottish and Irish. The Scottish part of the family are highlanders of Clan Chattan motto touch not a cat but a glove, They fought at the battle of Colloden in the 1700's under Bonnie Prince Charlie. After the defeat to the English they were hunted down and many left for Ireland and the then Colonies in America. Many will be interested to know that the Clan were in fact Catholics. Clan Chattan have tartan.
The name lives on ......in fact a movie has just been released this week in Dublin starring Michael Mc Elhatton.

I am researching the Brookie line. Louisa Jane Brookie was born in KY on 8 April 1833 and died on 8 June 1890. She is buried in Star Cemetery in West Mineral, Cherokee County, Kansas. She married William Andrew Mefford and they had 5 or 6 children - 3 in IN, 2 in IL, and 1 in ?. The children's names were Emma, Mary, Nancy, John, Matilda, ane perhaps Martha. Sorry to say none of the info on your message sounds familiar. However, I have very little on Louisa J. Brookie (pretty much what's in my message plus some dates). Lately I have come to the probable conclusion that William and Louisa Brookie Mefford are not the parents of the Mary Etta Mefford that I am looking for. I intend to continue my search. Maybe I will find out that the Brookie name is in my ancestry. Maybe Marshall Brookey will also answer you. He may have some insight into your line. Thanks for answering. ALDERDICE also born 1820s. who had a son JOHN N(or)HANCE ANDERSON. Agnes was likely dau of Thomas and Isabella (Anderson) Alderdice who lived Madison IN. Isabella was dau of the JAMES ANDERSON(1780-1848) married to JANET LANG who farmed near Hanover IN who I am seeking.

The locations that you mention are not familiar. The name was frequently misspelled but the "C" in Brockie was always "O" after 1778. That doesn't mean that another branch of Brockie's weren't here. They could have had their own name variation. Several did move to Canada before coming here to the US.

I am searching for information on my BROCKEY ancestors. I am wondering if Brockie may be a spelling variation on the name. I see the path that you show, and the family I am trying to find picks up the OH to IN path.

The first Brockey that I have is William c 1795 - 1865. The dates are not verified. He is buried in Fulton Co, IN.

Then:
William Brockey Jr, death circa 1860 - 1865, WI (they had migrated there, but he died, and his wife and children returned to IN).
wife: Susannah Barkman, b 1825, Lancaster Co, PA, d after 1865, IN

Next generation:
Elizabeth Brockeyb 1858, Fulton Co, IN, d 1941 Marshall Co, IN.

We know Elizabeth had several brothers / sisters, but don't have all the names. Believe she had brother named William.

In all places we have found this name in print, it has been spelled Brockey. We are finding so little, I wanted to check to see if it may have other variations, and wonder if there may be a tie to the Brockie family you have mentioned. I see there was a son named William which you named.

All of my Andersons start with Scotch John and Catharine Brookie. He was married twice and had 12 children total. I haven't had the time or luck to find more on him. He was born in 1784 from what I have. Wish I could help more. If I see anything about his family that looks like yours I'll let you know.

Hi Jeanna: Welcome aboard. You can see that I have no direct connection Brookie line and have been in discussion with Barbara White and others. My confusion lies in my Anderson line, which starts PA and goes thru KY and Miami OH before heading further west. Several descendants this line also moved IN including James Anderson(1780-1848), Margaret Anderson(1782-1838) m Andrew Fulton, John Anderson(1785-1838), Mary Anderson(1785-1827) m John Irvin and David Anderson (1787- ) married Nancy Currie. From the comments I gather you do not directly relate this Anderson line. My own line goes from Miami OH to CO. We are related to John and Catherine Brookie Anderson and John's son Robert from his first marriage was married to Mary Brookie. I have info from them on down. I will be getting a copy of the new Brookie family book that is coming out soon and can share that too when I get it. I have very little on the Brookies now. Barbara: I have almost nothing related lines. Queried Brookie line only hoping connect with anyone with confirmed history/leads my related earliest William and Catherine Anderson. My info comes from informal narrative by a Prof Don Anderson, descendant of Wm/Catherine's son James, which cites PA marriage/land records and confirmed iden their six children, later generations and move to KY and OH. Have no way of knowing degree accuracy/thoroughness of this earliest PA nfo, but I (and how many others) have followed search path in Franklin/Cumberland Co's PA without success.
I am just starting web search in effort learn prior histories these ancestors. Only web contact thus far other than yourself and Marian. You speak of fellow who is/has researched this Anderson line...would you connect me this party or pass along my desire assist without adding further confusion and avoid redundance. I have put out queries re descendant lines and suppose my simplicy is obvious to the old hands.

It is confusing because the Andersons are from two separate lines. I have checked this out with someone who is writing the genealogy of the Brookies and he has researched the McElhatton (parentage mainly) and the Andersons. He also stated that there are many errors in the McElhatton histories.
You are correct about the "El" being dropped from McElhatton
during the KY period.
John and William Anderson were in business together, doing cabinetry, in PA.
He confirmed that Catherine and Mary had a brother Alex but that there is another Alexander that often gets confused with that line.
I appreciate the information you have shared and am interested anything else you have on related lines.

Distant family rumor this line was from Scotland. Your Catherine Brookie married JOHN ANDERSON b 1785 in Scotland caught my attention. Is your John related?? My info shows 4 of William/Catherine McElhatton Anderson 6 children lived IND, including 3rd son JOHN ANDERSON b June 8, 1785 KY moved with parents to Xenia OH and farmed 1809 Hanover IND and 1837 LaPorte, IND. This John married Jane Taylor with children William K. m Mary Findley lived LaPorte IND, Robert, Catherine b 1822 m James C. Collins and Agnes b 1827. So we have a John with same dob but other details differ. I do not show second marriage or the same childrene....just getting started and already treading the murky waters. Incidently re your children John Anderson second marriage to Catherine Brookie, 2 child John Brookie b 1829...guess you mean Anderson. Will keep you posted if I learn anything more. FYI: See post #111/112 on McHatton family forum from Marian re McHatton family. Her info does not show the two sisters(Catherine Anderson and Mary Brookie) connected to the William McElhatton family of Franklin Co PA so further clarification needed. I believe that John and Mary (McElhatton) Brookie had more children, one was Samuel.

I do know that John Brookie was in business with an Anderson while living in PA. Was it cabinet making? I have been searching for more about the McElhatton's and would appreciate hearing from you. This has been my brickwall for some time now so it is exciting to get your post.

Who are the related families that moved to OH?
Your William Anderson must be a father or uncle to John Anderson. Do you think so?

I don't find any information about your John b. 1809,
however my ancestor John was b. 1756 in Edinburgh, Sct. and you can find him in the familysearch.org files. It is possible that he is a son of John because there seems to be large gaps in the birth dates of John's children.

I am curious to see what might turn up on John b. 1809.

I know that John was a Presbyterian. If you do a search on
google.com for McConnell's Station, KY historic forts, John Brookie- you will find some interesting stories that include John. His name is sometimes spelled Brookey or something similar.

All I have on John Brookie is, b. Abt. 1809 Louisville, KY, d. August 08, 1865 Peru, IL. m. Sophia Keedy August 15, 1842 Sangamon Co., Illinois. Couple had a son Arthur Brookie who had a daughter Neva Myrtle Brookie. Neva was my grandmother Pettee. Local information says John Brookie was a doctor.

My ggg-grandfather was Christian Fredrick Brucke. He came to America from Germany in 1854. I have the descendancy chart all the way to the present. My father, JB and another brother Charlie spelled their name Brookie because when they went to work that is the way it was spelled and they never changed it. I am descended from a John Brookie who emmigrated from Scotland in the late 1700's. It sounds a lot like it might be the same person. I don't know his ancestors. He was a soldier in the revolutionary war and was shot in the shoulder. He married in PA (I'm not sure to whom), then moved to Lexington KY, and finally died at the home of his daughter Catherine ANDERSON in Madison CO, IN. I am descended from his son William, b. 8 Dec 1782, Fayette Co, KY; m. Mary DOUGHERTY 30 May 1816, d. 23 Jul 1838. William and Mary had 13 children; my ancestor is Robert A., b. 11 Jul 1826. I'd love to find out more (and I'm happy to share what I know) about the life and ancestors of this Brookie line. Let me know if we're connected!

Looking for anyone with information on the Brookie family--Pearl Brookie was married to Homer Ellsworth Duke and had twin children, Leroy and Lorraine Duke in Madison Co. Indiana August 5, 1915. John Brookie married Mary McElhatton 1778 in
Mercersburg, Franklin Co, PA. His son Willam
had John Alexander who moved to Clinton Co., IN> his
son Thomas Alexander was born in Clinton Co.,
Thomas A.'s son was my father, Robert S.
Their are three more generations of Brookies.

I have more information to share and I am very interested
to know about other descendants of John Brookie. I am also
trying to find Scottish ancestors and descendants.
The Brookie spelling was Brockie before he
immigrated and I believe that he had 5 brothers:
Robert, James, Walter, William (2 Wm's).

the basic information about William's family
but not much more. Where is John buried
and do you know more details about his

My Brookie name is from Scotland. There it
was spelled different ways, but mostly
Brockie. The "c" was changed somewhere on the way
over. I think that my people had names that they
didn't think would fit in as well in a new country
so they changed it. Maybe that happened to your
surname?
