She was placed with the New England Home for Little Wanderers in Boston and adopted 1902 by Charles and Angela Fish of Amherst, MA. Oral family history says that he was a descendant of George Soule of the Mayflower.

Some of the genealogy I have further back was said to be made up by a man that was commissioned by Robert Somers Brookings to do his family history. So maybe we can together uncover this mess and discover the truth.

Hello all male Brookings descendents. The Brooking society is looking for any Brookings male descendent to take a Y-DNA test. They are especially looking for males from who descend from the Cecil Co, Maryland branch. I am from that branch, but I am a female and descend from a female Brookings. I am not currently in contact with any relative who fits this category. If this could be for you, please contact me and let me know. I would love to get family information on this side.

It is looking like Thora was on only child. In the 1910 census David J. Brookings and wife Ella are living with single 24 year old Thora and they are listed as having birthed 1 child with 1 living. This could be why Thora kept in contact with cousins so well. Thora married Mr. Earl Barefoot as here letter head has that name.

Hello cousin-
It was great to see your post. Thora(Brookings)Barefoot was a first cousin to my great grandmother Jane "Jennie" Baird. Thora's father was Dr. David J. Brookings a well known civil war figure who had the task of informing the 19 divisions of the army of the assination of Pres. Lincoln. Dr. Brookings was known as Iowa's grand old man of medicine and I remember hearing it took two or three days for his visitation because so many people came. Dr. David J. was a younger brother to Jennie's mother Margaret A. Brookings Baird. I have several letters written either from Thora to my great grandma Jennie or about Thora. I have more about the Brookings family as well.
If you know of any Direct male Brookings (father's father was a brooking) the Brooking Society is looking for them to do the Y-DNA testing to see if we can connect to the English Brookings. The society will pay for the tests. Please feel free to keep in touch.
Courtney
cjmilburn06@hotmail.com

One of my postings did not go through, so here it is again in simpler form. Littleton
Brooking born in Va. came to Hancock Co., Ga. with his parents, Francis (Frank) and Ann H. Brooking from Amelia Co., Va. along with two of Frank's brother, William and Edward Broadnax Brooking, state representative from Hancock Co., Ga. Several married sisters also came to Ga. Frank was son of Vivion Brooking, Recuiting Officer, a Colonel in Revolutionary War, who was son of Robert and Frances Vivion Brooking of King and Queen County, Va. Vivion Brooking died 12/1808 in Amelia County, Va. just SW of Richmond. I am descended from his son, William Brooking and wife, Elizabeth Barrett.
Brenda J. Pass

Robert is supposed to be a cousin of some sorts, but I have yet to make the connection. My GG grandmother was Margaret Brookings. Her parents were Charles Brookings and Eliza Johnston. Charles' parents were Richard Brookings and Margaret Mathews who were wed in 1794 in Ireland. I have more if this sounds like a connection to you.
Courtney Page

Brookings of Cecil Co, Maryland

I am looking for any information and or relatives of the Brookings of Cecil Co, Maryland. We are said to be related to Robert Somers Brookings who started Brookings Institution in DC. My GGGG grandparents were Richard Brookings and Margaret Mathews who were wed in Ireland in 1794. They had at least one child Charles Brookings who was born about 1803 and married Eliza Johnston in Elkhart, Cecil Co, Maryland on 20 Oct 1828. They migrated to Warsaw, Illinois sometime in their life because that is where they resided at their death. They had at least one daughter Margaret Brookings born 5 Sep 1829 in Cecil Co, Maryland. She married Robert Baird on 28 Dec 1849. They had at least 12 children one of whom was a daughter Jane (Jennie) Baird. Jennie married Charles Marion McCollom. These were my great grandparents. If anyone has any information for me I would greatly appreciate it. I know that cousin Thora Barefoot had all the Brookings genealogy but sold it to either Time magazine or to the congressional library. It depended on who paid more. She sold the liniage with a library of newspaper articles she had collected over the years.
Thanks
Courtney

I know Hattie married a Brookings in 1889 and had 2 children. Arthur Freeland b.JUN 1893 and Robert b. 1897. Both boys are in the 1900 census with mother living with her father Albert Jordan in Webster. In 1910 Robert is missing. 1930 census states Hattie as devoriced, 2Children/one living; so this leads me to beleive Robert died between 1900 and 1910. Arthur Brookings son would love to learn about his grandfather if possible. Anything on any of the family would be so appriciated.
Also Arthur Brookings son Elmer drowned at age 15 in Portland, ME on Christmas eve or on Friday evening before Chritmas. He drowned with another boy as they both had fallen through the ice. Would like to have any newspaper clippings on this.
s. brookings

Thanks for the message. Do you live up in Maine? My husband is Richard Pendleton and Everett was his grandfather.
I have been trying to find out what happened to Donald William Brookings, the youngest of Everett's children. He was in the Marine Corps during WWII and married someone named Betsy. The last information I have is that he had 2 children and died in Ohio.
Do you have anything on Donald?

I have used a lot of the information from your entries. I have found most of it helpfuf. Whoever, I have found a few errors under listing for Evertt Gardner Brooking, you have Frances Gardner Brookings listed as a male. Since I have personally met the lady, she was my husband's aunt. She married Fred Orr and lived near Birch Point. The other error is that Everett did have a second son, Donald William Brookings, who married a woman named Betsy and had 2 children, Donald Willian Brookings Jr.
We haven't heard from Donald's family for years, not since he died sometime after WWII.
Thanks for the help your writings have provided. I hope you don't take offence for my corrections. For some reason in other refereces on the Brookings family don't mention Donald.
Fran Pendleton

Hi
I'm trying to find the parents of Everett G. Brookings, late of Wiscassett ME. I checked your Brookings history and found it very informative. I did find him mentioned in the notes, along with his children. However there was no mention of his second son Donald William. Also it lists Frances Gardner Brookings as male. I think this must be an error because my husband had an aunt Frances Gardner Brookings who married Fred Orr and lived around Wiscasset just down the road from Florence May, who married John Connors and Dorothy Helen, who married Howard Delmer Pendleton. Dorothy was my mother-in-law.
If this is part of your line, you should know that Donald had one son Donald jr and Randall Everett had no children
If you find where Everett fits in, please let me know as I am trying to find information on this side of my husband's family
Frances Pendleton
franwp@aol.com

We have no idea where in Virginia. He was married in Baldwin County, Georgia. And in the 1850 Census in Morgan County, Calhoun, Georgia he is listed with his family. His youngest child was born in 1852 so he either died or disappeared between 1852 and 1860. He is not in the 1860 Census with his family. His wife Georgia was with another man with her children. If you know anything please let me know we have been searching for info on this ggg grandfather. Thanks for responding.
I was informed that the Brookings' from Virgina decendended from William Brooking.
Littleton's decendents ended up in Louisiana.
