I am searching for info on a Benjamin C. Brookins, born about 1834, state unknown. He enlisted in the 25th Battery Ohio Artillery August 22, 1861 and died 25 December 1863.
He married Cordelia M. Stearns in Chautaugua Co.,NY on November 7, 1861.
The Widows Pension file states that he is Benjamin C. Brookins Jun. So his father was also Benjamin - cannot locate anything in census records for him.
I cannot locate him in the 1860 census. I am researching all Lake County Ohio Civil War soldiers/sailors for our local history center.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Ruth Sprowls (Wall of Honor Coordinator)
(ruthsprowlsATwindstreamDOTnet)

This is another web site that replicates the error of listing Jane Jarvis and Thomas Brookens as parents of children such as Samuel, Elizabeth and Delaney. The sources listed don't match up to the right name. This web site shows a Samuel Benjamin Brookins that was born in 1775 before his "mother" Jane Jarvis was born. The web site left off Jane Jarvis' birthdate of 1782! Also his assumed "father" Thomas Brookens was born in 1782. For correct sources, see We Have a Heritage" by Tess Mulrooney, The Brooking Society or www.minson.org operated by Dave Minson who uses the Mulrooney books as his references among others.. Hope this helps to clarify. I'll be happy to answer any questions or help in other ways. Just drop me a line.

Cheryl

You are correct, Jacob. Thomas Brookens and Jane Jarvis never lived in the South! There is absolutely NO evidence that they were ever in the South. They were pioneers in Pennsylvania and Ohio as evidenced by multiple Federal censuses, family Bible, land records and wills.

Jane Jarvis was NOT the wife of Thomas A. Brookins.

The Eubanks web site mixes up two different men with two different sets of children. Thomas Brookens of Ohio never had children named Samuel or Haywood or Delaney!

The source is Thomas Brookens own will from Ohio where he lists his children. Other sources include the 3 volume book "We Have a Heritage" by Tess Mulrooney and The Brooking Society, a world wide organization for the Brooking surname and its variants. If you have further questions, drop me a line.

Regards,
Cheryl

Re: Thomas Brookins (Brookens)

There seems to be some confusion, understandable with all the name variants of Brooking, about Thomas A. Brookins (from Virginia and then moved deeper South) and Thomas Brookens 1782-1865 of Ohio)

Some trees I've seen conflate the offspring of both men and put them as issue of Thomas Brookens of Ohio! The only son that I know of Thomas Brookens (Married to Jane Jarvis) that went south was Thomas Brookens Jr who died in Rome, GA as part of Grant's Army in the run up to the seige of Atlanta. He was part of the 76th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.
Some trees confuse the senior Thomas Brookens with the junior Thomas and say that the elder Brookens served in the Civil War which he didn't, of course, because he was ill and died in 1865.
Some trees also say Thomas Brookens (1782-1865) served in the Revolutionary War and then moved South, which of course is impossible because he wasn't born until 1782! Anyone that has questions, I would be happy to answer if I can.
Regards,

CD Buswell

In the 1850 Census, Rueben Brookins of Muscogee Co.Ga. had in his household a young man 22, Alfred Laython or Alfrod Layton. I am trying to get some history on Alfred, Namely hia Father and Mother. Mr. Brookin was a free slave, Mulatto. Mr. Laython was born in Washington Co. Ga. and supposedly was white. Does anyone have a clue, hint or info on these two men? There was a slave owner in Washington Co.,Ga in the 1840 census by the name of Benjamin Brookins. He had 7 slaves in 1840. Could there be a connection? You can reach me at: patlayton31@gmail.com

If you would write me at me regular email address, I would appreciate it very much.

( MLBrookins@aol.com )

Also, I can't seem to find your name within SD's lineage, which bothers me. When I finally located SD, I found that he had passed just six months prior, so I had to go with what everyone else had to say.

Besides coming from SD's line, I have researched the family all the way back to England and back to about the late 1300's.

There is much we can share if you're interested. I look forward to your reply.

Mike Brookins

I would like to get more information on his father SD Brookings, who is my g.g.grandfather. I have many letters to his daughter with info on Newbourn, and a letter from his wife too.

Thank you for the Web site. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure the parentage of Thomas A. Brookins and Jane Jarvis is incorrect. I've seen this parentage listed before, but no sources are ever given. The more likely parentage is Thomas Brookins and Nancy Mercer of Washington and Baldwin Co., GA (I've seen this parentage listed for Benjamin as well), though as of yet, I can't find any definitive proof for it.

This is the my Caucasian lineage:
Thomas A. Brookins came from Ireland , married Jane Jarvis, who was from Pennsylvania, they had a son Samuel Benjamin in 1775. Samuel married a Cynthia and they had a son named James Edward. James Edward married Arvilla, and they had Seaborn H. Brookins in 1820 GA. He married Jane Dommin, and they had Jefferson Willis Edwin Brookins who married Arsula Woods in 1844 in Gaines, Ga and had 2 kids Terrell Leona Brookins and Marion Algae Brookins. Terrell married a Rev. James Fletcher Hathaway and Marion Algae married Nancy Catherine Purswell, they had 4 children Dock,Offie, Porter, and Essie Mae Brookins. Essie married Daniel Douglas Kelly Sr, and their children are Raymond H, Daniel D. Jr, James C., Thelma, Maureen, Rex, and Gary Kelly. Of these children, and there are many, but I am James C Kelly's daughter, Barbara, so that makes us cousins.

Also, have you ever heard of the story that a one of the Brookins men went away and was murdered by Poncho Villa, my dad tells me this story, said either a great grandfather or gg grandfather went away and this is what happened to him.

Re: Seaborn Brookins wife Jane Dormany

Hi Jeffrey,

I just saw your email. You are correct about Jane Dormany (Dominey). You can take it further by looking at deed records in Alabama. David Dominey owned land in Houston County. John B. Dominey owned land in Montgomery Co. Louiza Dominey owned land in Pike and William J. Dominey owned land in Barbour Co. David Dominy owned land in Macon Co. and Henry Dominy owned land in Henry Co. You might remember that Seaborn Brookins also owned land in Macon Co. Edwin and Ira H. Brookins owned land in Henry Co. along with Henry Dominy. Cleo Dominey and James L Dominey are buried in Friendship Cemetery along with Canna Dell Brookins Cartwright. Wilkinson Co. GA has some wills for some Domineys. Even in the recent past Brookins and Domineys have been found in the same elementary class in Florida. Play with the spelling and Google the two last names.

You can find Seaborn Brookins named in Piney Wood Echoes on Ancestry.com. You can also find Brooking Mill Creek on topozone.com. It is near Daleville, Alabama. Another name for the area is Kelly Mill. The Kellys and the Brookins are allied families.

Dewey C. Brookins is listed on the New York Passengers List 1820-1957 as having travelled about 1929. Port of Departure was Antwerp, Belgium. Wofford College names Brookings/Brookins - Sarah A., Sarah Jackson and Rebecca A. Jackson. The Auburn Library also has Dewey C.'s name on the internet. He is mentioned in Flying High. Vantage Press, 1965.

Finally, I have a photocopy of some memoirs of Aunt Athea (Brookins) Hall written in March 1957.

I hope some of this might be helpful to you. I don't have time to do any research right now but maybe you can follow up on the Dormany, Dominey, Dominy/ Brookins connection and prove it.

Kay

I have a John BAKER in my husband's line. He was married (I believe) to a Sarah BROOKINS. I am not sure if this is the correct family. They moved from NY around 1830 to Athens Co. OH. IN the 1850 Census, they had Esther BROOKENS living with them. She was 77. The names of the children of John and Sarah are: Levi (born NY), Sylvanus (born OH), Zeremba (born OH), and Lucinda (born OH). Does this fit the information anyone has?

Henry Bell Brookins Burke County, Ga

Is anyone familiar with these Brookins?

HENRY BELL BROOKINS AND MRS. MARY BROOKINS

They are listed in my great granddaddys obit as his parents but yet I have search and search for any piece of infor on these people and get no where. My father told me that William D. (Judge is what everyone called him) was really born a BELL. He took his grandmother's name BROOKINS. The church that he is buried at has records that his mother is CAROLINE BROOKINS. I have also been told that his mother was working at someones plantation or home and she became pregnant by that man and was raised as a bastard child and was took in by the BROOKINS family, if so then who is HENRY BELL BROOKINS. None of this makes sense to me. Does anyone go to the Burke County Courthouse often and look up records? If so maybe you could keep me in mind if you run across anything on HENRY BELL BROOKINS. I would appreciate it. Any information on these two people I would appreciate very very much. I have search the Augusta Chronicle Archives, Ancestry.com and numerous other exploring places. I dont find anything.
Thanks, Darlene Brookins Brooks

This is my grandfathers obituary from the Augusta Chronicle.

William Dwellie (Judge) Brookins - Sardis, Georgia
age 82, died Wednesday 1-27-1965) at his residence near Alexander, Ga., after a brief illness.
I am tracking various branches of the Brookins family from New Marlborough to Ohio. I am descended from Silas Brookins. I would like to receive a copy of the information you cited in your post.

I just borrowed A Standard History of The Hanging Rock Iron Region of Ohio from The Ohio State University library, and it has considerable information on this branch of the family. Have you seen it? I would be interested in knowing what information you now have on the Brookins line.
