Re: Asa Brookover

Asa was a son of John Brookover of Wood Co WV. John had md 1) Elizabeth Pertley in Frederick Co VA. They moved to PA and had several children: John, Jacob, Christina, Mary Margaret, Elizabeth, maybe Peter. John, sr. then moved to Wood Co (W)VA. Descendants believe he had a 2nd wife because she was referred to as Kate and a 2nd family seems to have required a younger wife. Asa's brothers included George Washington Brookover, Daniel, David, Thomas, Martin (my ancestor). John Brookover, sr, was son of Jacob Bruckhoffer and Mary______. No one seems to know Mary's last name. Jacob came to America from Germany as a young boy. There is quite a bit of information on the Brookover message board. I wish you very good luck in pursuing your family information. If you can add anything regarding Asa's family, I would appreciate it. ---Bobbie Jean

Re: William and Rebecca Mills Brookover

Bobbie Jean,
I THINK this is the same person as the father of William T. and "at least 6 daughters" (Vivian Boergner.) Navigating between Rootsweb and the LDS site, I have come up (VERY TENTATIVELY) with:
1. Mary born ca. 1807, maybe Maryland, married Jeremiah K. Huffman 9 Dec. 1841 in Muskingum County (LDS site cites a microfilm reel to check for documentation.)
2. Sarah, born ca. 1811, maybe Maryland, married Nimrod Taylor 5 Sept 1844, Muskingum Co. (LDS microfilm court record cited.) There is a Sarah Taylor buried in Greenville, death given as 23 September 1898 but I have no idea if it is this Sarah or not. According to World Connect, Nimrod was still alive for the 1900 census (living in the home of his daughter Anna Taylor, wife of Frederick Gates.
3. Lucinda, born ca. 1813, possibly Maryland, married John Ford 23 December 1851, Muskingum County (LDS microfilm court record cited.)
4. Elizabeth, born 9 June 1809, possibly Maryland, married James Carrothers (Carothers), had a lot of children (over 10) and died Sept. 1872 in Macon Co. IL.

The only father I can reasonably (at this time) guess to be William's (especially if his son is William T.) is Thomas Brookover and his wife Mary Thomas. And yet, that does not fit with their marriage date of 1786. Drat, drat, drat! Child of Johannes (John) and Anna Catharina Oswald???? I just don't know...feel like I am overlooking something quite obvious!
Nan

If any descendant has more info please post or contact me. I tried each of those surname boards with a search for Brookover, coming up negative. I tried censuses, but inadequate info did not fit any criteria. William is listed 1840 Muskingum Co OH. with two dau 10-15. Could not find after that. Is this a lost son of John? I have been given conflicting info over the years. Let's place this branch of our Brookover family on the tree. ---Bobbie Jean

Please help!
I understand that Priscilla, b. approx. 1777, daughter of Jacob, married James McNulty. As a widow with small children, John, Aseal, and Mary Ann, she went to Adams County, Ohio where her brother Aseal had located. In the 1820 census she is listed in Sprigg Twp there. I cannot find her after that. Others on the internet have her as marrying William Pence, but I have found no record of them.

Her son, Aseal McNulty, spelled as Ashiel, is in Brown County, OH (right next to Adams and had been created from Adams) in 1850; his brother John being with him, also, and as Asael in 1860.

If anyone has documentation regarding Priscilla, please share.
Thanks........Bobbie Jean

Pence bio

Note: Alfred is the father of Ruth Pence who married Robert Brookover, Adams County, Ohio

From A History of Adams County, Ohio; Nelson W. Evans and Emmons B. Stivers; West Union, Ohio, 1900.

Alfred Pence
One of the first settlements in Adams County outside of the Stockade at Manchester was made by Michael Pence, his son Peter Pence, and their kinsmen, the Roush family, together with the Bryans and Cooks, in 1796, at the “Dutch Settlement” in what is now Sprigg Township. The families were “Pennsylvania Dutch” and had originally settled in the Shenandoah Valley, and in the year 1795 came to the Three Islands at Manchester, to make their future homes in the Northwest Territory. The first year of their coming to the Three Islands, they cultivated a crop of corn on the lower island which was then partially cleared.
Michael Pence, the pioneer, was drowned in the Ohio River in 1807 while attempting to cross with his team at the lower ferry. He had purchased one thousand four hundred acres of land in the Hopkins survey in Sprigg Township and was a wealthy farmer for his day in Adams County. He is buried in Hopewell Cemetery. His son, Peter Pence, who married Susan Roush in the Shenandoah Valley previous to his coming to Adams County in 1795, had among other children, a son, Aaron, born in 1798, who married Elizabeth Moore, and who was the father of the following named children: Nathan, David, Daniel, Jacob, Francis S., Peter, Harriet, who married Dyas Gilbert, and our subject. Alfred Pence, the oldest child, who was born May 17. 1823, on the old Michael Pence homestead, which he now owns, and where he resides, near Maddox Postoffice. He married Hannah Evans in 1847, and has reared the following children: Elizabeth, who married Zenous Roush, Ruth, who married Robert Brookover, Dyas, who married Ada Parr, Rufus, Mahala, who married Lafayette Roush, and Ida, married to Rev. A. D. Foster.

Re: Conrad Barkheffer

Since Conrad Bruckhoffer did not arrive in Lancaster Co. until 1749 and was a young boy, and alive in 1751, most likely this was a different person and an adult to have probate.

Conrad Parkhaffer is listed in the Index to Will Books and Intestate Records of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, 1729-1850; page 36, giving simply the year 1746, no book, volume, or page.

Since there is no Conrad Bruckhoffer, or anything even close listed in this book, I suspect that Conrad, like Jacob, left Lancaster County. -----Bobbie Jean

Re: Brookover in PA

Nan, I will attempt more detailed reply in a week or two as I am very involved in other research right now, but could not resist a quickie little reply to some of your information.

The John "Brookover" in Philadelphia who came to America over 50 + years after Jacob may or may not be some Bruckhoffer (different sp)relative, but not of our line. Apparently, all those refer to the same person. Later Brookovers in PA are from Asceal's line.

The Cumberland, Washington, and Greene Counties all refer to the same location, just different names at different times.
They all refer to John, son of Jacob 1.

I do have some questions to clear up:
Why do you say the 1800 census does not support John's R W pension application? Although I don't recall his stating he was a substitute, but I don't have notes right here.
The war was over, he married, and moved to Pennsylvania, although that border seemed to be fluid back then.

I seem to recall that Jacob, John, Priscilla, and Peter, giving PA as birth state. I will verify that later.

John 1 was in the PA census same location ( even if it "looked" different) in 1790, 1800, and I think 1810. He located to Wood Co (W)V shortly after, I believe.

His son John was in Monongalia Co until his 2nd marriage to Sarah Jennings; relocated to southern Ohio and now being a doctor. In those days being a doctor simply involved working with a doctor sort of apprentice style or just "reading" like they did to become a lawyer.

What is William Seaton's Day Book?

There are just too many Johns, everyone using that name.

Will be more definite later. --------Bobbie Jean

Conrad Barkheffer

Listed on the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania will abstracts is an "Conrad BARKHEFFER" whose probate may have been filed around 1746 and for whom there are no extant records. The extractor states that the surname should be PARKHEFFER. I searched the USGenWeb Archives for PA under both variations, and found nothing else. Could this possibly be our missing Conrad? Chime in on this, please!

Brookover spelling variations: again

I just can't seem to let the various name spellings go! The bug hit me again this weekend and this is what I found (probably includes duplicates since I didn't take time to go back through my papers):
1. 1850 New York City, Ward 12, page 90A, living in Wards? Island Refuge, Wm F. BROOKHOVER, born about 1824 in Germany

2. 1830 Licking County, Gratiot Twp., Ohio, page 423:
Greenbury Boohover (ancestry transcription) with 1 male 5-9 and 1 male 30-39; 1 female under 4, and 1 female 30-39.

3. 1820 Frederick County, Maryland, election district 9, page 77 I found Thomas Brookover with 1 male 45 and over; 1 female 16-25, and 1 female 45 and older. The 3rd person down is William Broohover with 1 male 0-9; 1 male 26-44; 4 females 0-9 and 1 female 26-44!

4. 1820 Maryland, Montgomery county, Goshen page 150 (HQ) 172 (handwritten) (printed 733) is Wm Brookover (Broohover per one printed index) with 1 male 0-9; 1 male 26-44; 3 females 0-9;1 female 10-15; 1 female 26-44; and 1 foreigner not naturalized.

5. I also found a Charles Brockhover in Delaware County, Ohio, Trenton Twp page 92 in 1860, but have not had time to look it up.

Fun!
Thanks, Nan. The book I have: An Index to the Will Books and Intestate Records of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania 1729-1850; Fulton & Mylin, page 58, of the section for Intestate Records lists
Bruckhoffer, John, 1749
No other information. No book, volume or page given. I am sure this is the same person as you mentioned. Interesting the Anglisized version of the name being probably a proximity of the German pronunciation---Brookhove, being spelled like Jacob's and Conrad's names in the Orphan's Court and even sometimes used for other Brookovers.
Any further insight would be greatly appreciated.
Since no one so far has mentioned finding the wife and daughters, it is probable that they also died, likely on the ship, 1749 being the year they sailed for America.
---Bobbie Jean
German form of Brookover

Ancestry has for Brookover the following information:
"Americanized spelling of German Brockhofer, a variant of Brockhoff or of Bachofer, a topographic name for a farmer living by a stream (see Bach+Hofer)."

In German-American Names by George F. Jones I have found:
Bruck, Brucker, Bruckmann, Bruckmeyer, Bruckner (dweller
by a bridge) and the same meaning for Brueck, Bruecker, Brueckner plus bridge builder. Also:
Hofer, Hoffer (farmer)
Which seems to me to be closer to the original Bruckhoffer.

There is also:
Hoffer, Hoffert, Hofferth, Hoffhers (manager of a cloister farm)
Brockhoff (brake farm)
I have no idea what a cloister farm or a brake farm might be!

From a German online dictionary the nearest literal translation of "brook" and "over" is "bach" and "ruber". The
nearest name I have found in Jones book is Bachhuber
(farmer on the brook) .

Anyone seen a particular document that would lead us to
any type of formal knowledge of the "real" German spelling of the document prior to 1748? To be perfectly honest, I have
had a great deal of difficulty transcribing what little I have found of the earlier German documents.

I would love to get some input on this!
of the photo
Bruckhoffer, Gimbsheim emigrant

Johannes Bruckhoffer left Gimbsheim of the Palatinate 13 May 1749 with a small local group of parishioners who were very interrelated. John either died on ship as his wife and children did or was too sick to sign a ship's manifest and died very soon after. As of yet I have not found him listed. Most of the others are accounted for having arrived in the port of Philadelphia around September. His adult nephew (son of his sister), Michael Beltzer was in the emigrant group. I have not located him on a ship's list, either. In the "Brethren From Gimbshim" booklet by Annette K. Burgert, it is stated that there is a notation in the Gimbsheim church book that he "died in America." No date given. In the Ephrata Register it states "Died 1751 - Bolsner (Bolner), Michael, from Gimbsheim Revival." Since the only person named in that group who had a name close to that was Michael Beltzer (most of the names seem somewhat altered) I have concluded that must be the same person. If Michael took his young cousins, Jacob and Conrad under his charge upon arrival in America and if Michael did die in 1751, perhaps that would explain the boys' appearance in Orphan's Court in December 1751. In the Index to the Will Books and Intestate Records of Lancaster County is listed Blatner, Michael, 1751, perhaps another variation of the name. My question is why didn't the closeknit communal Ephrata group provide for the young Bruckhoffer boys. Why didn't another family in the Gimbsheim group take them in as there were relatives there? So far, there are no definite answers. If any of the old records are still available, is there an interested person in Lancaster County who could research the possibilities in that area? Are their "apprentice" records? Guardians were to make regular reports on their charges. Is it too much to hope that some court records might still exist? Bobbie Jean

obit for Milbern E. Brookover

03 Feb 1973: Obituary for Milbern E. Brookover:
Funeral services for Milbern E. Brookover, 63, of Marietta, who died Saturday in Caldwell, O., will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at trhe Doudna and McClure Funeral Home, Marietta.
Burial will be at the Riverview Cemetery in Williamstown.
Born at Williamstown, he was a son of the late Mack and Ellen Umstot Brookover. He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include his widow,, Emmazetta Casto Brookover, one son, Lonzo Brookover of Marietta, One daughter, Mrs. Charles (Donna) Schob, of Marietta, one step-daughter, Mrs. Charles (Emma) Reese of Barberton, O., seven grandchildren, three brothers, Luther and Brady Brookover both of Williamstown, and George of Norfolk, Connecticut, one sister, Mrs. Sophia Pugh of Boaz.
---------------------------------------------
There are a couple more lines, but they are unreadable. I do not know which newspaper as I was given the clipping and it isn't marked. It is probably Marietta. This shows that George Brookover of Connecticut is the son of Luther Mack Brookover and Ellen Umstot. In his wife's (Emazetta Brookover) obituary it gives his name as Milburn Edward Brookover, her 2nd husband, who died Feb 18, 1973.
Re: Brookover in New York Times (Parkersburg)

After going through my records of marriages, cemeteries, census, etc., I have come up with the solution of who this John Brookover is. There is a headstone for John S. Brookover at Ogden Cemetery, Rosemar Rd, northeast of Vienna, Wood Co WV. The date of death was read by a fellow researcher as December 22, 1888. However, eights and threes are often difficult to distinguish on old headstones. The John in the article died December 22, 1883. John S. Brookover was the son of David and Dorothy (Varner) Brookover. He married Melissa C. Starr, daughter of Richard and Margaret Starr, 01 Jan 1873. Her mother, Margaret, was married first to Daniel Brookover, brother of David. In the 1880 Census John and Melissa have two children: Charles F., 6 and Maud A. 1. Maude md. Orville Shillinburg when she was 17. If any descendants can verify this information, please post. ---Bobbie Jean
