Hi all,

I've hit a brick wall with my third great grandfather William Brooks. In most of the censuses I've found him in, he's listed as being born in Ohio. The only clue I have to his parents is possible birth places--in the 1880 census, William says that his father was born in PA and his mother in VA.

I don't know much about him. I believe he was a [petrol] farmer. I'm fairly certain he fought in the civil war (companies F 23 and 42 of the Missouri infantry), and he seems to have moved house a lot--from Ohio to Iowa to Missouri (maybe) and finally to Kansas, where he died. I know some people have listed his death date as 1858, but I don't know why.

His wife was also born in Ohio. Her parents were Philip Craner McKinnis (1801-1868) and Susannah Dukes (1808-1868). They had four children (to my knowledge):

Lincoln W. Brooks (1850- )
William P. Brooks (1853 - )
Washington A. Brooks (1857-1941)
Mattie (Martha?) J. Brooks (1859-1943) (my ancestor)

I can't find him in the 1850 census, and I have no idea who his parents are. I would love to know who they were; I would love to know more about William himself. If anyone has any advice or information, I would be very grateful for the help.

Thank you for your time.
