Re: BROOKS - Shepton Mallet, Somerset, UK

I have Brooks ancestors from Shepton Mallet, Edwin John Brooks, born 1822. A brother of Joseph? Edwin emigrated to Canada circa 1850. His grandson emigrated to Zion Illinois, joining relatives there, about 1905. Edwin John left Somerset with 4 brothers; one who came to Ontario with him, the other three went to the US, at least one of which ended up in Zion. I don't know his name, but he formed the nucleus of a family group that seems to have attracted cousins etc..for decades.
Do you have any info that may confirm this? I am especially interested in Joseph--is he my ancestor's brother? And what do you know about Joseph's family?

Willis T. Brooks m. Sarah Ann Pullen/Pulliam

Researching Pullens related to my own line, I deduced the following. I will not be doing any more research on this branch of the Pullens, so this is all the info I have. I have no primary evidence for this, only the clues listed. However, my conclusions may point another researcher in the right direction.

Here goes:

Sarah Ann Pullen/Pullem/Pulliam married Willis T. Brooks on April 25, 1840, in Tallapoosa County, AL. This info is from the Ancestry AL Marriage Index. Willis T. and Sarah and their children show in the Arkansas censuses from 1850 until at least 1880.

I kept trying to connect Sarah to my Pullen family from Tallapoosa County, Abraham/Abrahm & Liddie Pullen. She was born in GA in the right time frame to be in their family, and Abrahm and Liddie always show as coming from GA.

However, in addition to the Abrahm Pullen family, there was another Pullen family in Tallapoosa: William N. or H. Pullen and his wife Nancy (maybe Abrahm's brother?). In 1850 William is in Arkansas, born NC, Nancy is born SC. Sarah always shows as born in GA. However, 1880 shows that Sarah was born in GA, her father was from NC, and her mother was from GA. The fact that both Sarah's parents were not from GA is one clue that Abrahm and Liddie were not her parents. The similarities between William & Nancy's birthplaces and the birthplaces listed for Sarah's parents in 1880 is another.

And further:

In 1840 William H. Pullam is in Tallapoosa County with a daughter in the right age range of 15 - 20; Sarah would have been 17. Nearby are several Brooks families with boys in the right age ranges of 15 - 20 or 20 - 30 for Willis, who would have been 20ish. A. Pullen is not around as far as I have found.

So it seems to me that the parents of Sarah Ann Pullen/Pulliam are William H. and Nancy and not Abrahm and Liddie, 'though they may be related.

Happy hunting.

I'm looking for information on George S. Brooks, born about 1845 in either Brighton Kentucky, or near Brookfield Kentucky. He was a slave to William Herod whose son-in-law was Captain Schofield CSA who served with Morgan's Raiders during the Civil War. I don't have his mother's name or siblings except that he had a younger brother and a younger 1/2 sister. He was married but lost both his wife and daughter so had no living children.

William Brooks and Nathan Ellis

Greetings:

I just found this post and found it quite interesting, as I descend from William Brooks, through his daughter Sabina Brooks Ellis, her son Nathan Ellis and his daughter Sabbina A. Ellis (my great-grandmother). I am about to visit England and thought I might visit the archives there to see if there is any record of the incarceration of William Brooks in Mont du Lac prison in ca. 1781 - 1783. May I ask the source of your information on this subject? I also am attempting to document that Nathan Ellis (b. 1812 in Huntington Township, Ohio) in fact was the son of Sabbina Brooks Ellis. If you have any proof of that, I would love to have it.

Thanks!

Christopher Lunding
Riverside, CT

Thank you. She is the Elzina Irene I was looking for. turns out she's my great-great grandmother. The only reference I had found was a census record that didn't include her maiden name

I noticed your message about Micajah Brooks. I have his revolutionary war pension application and approval. I am mainly wanting to know and verify if he had a son named Russell Brooks born in 1809. There seems to be some doubt by
some people on ancestry.com trees. My wife is a Brooks and your Yahoo Group may know about Russel Brooks. Email me at dhaire6881@aol.com if you can.
