HISTORY NOTES: Manliff JARRELL
In 1862, Manliff Jarrell purchased the first residence built in High
Point by his brother-in-law, Seborn Perry, and enlarged it into the
well-known Jarrell's Hotel. The hotel was operated by Mr. and Mrs.
Jarrell.

Local Museum Memorializes High Pointer Brookshire

Among many of the first High Pointers memorialized in the High Point
Museum on E. Lexington Avenue is Pauline Elmyra Brookshire Jarrell

Pauline Elmyra Brookshire was born December 9, 1834, the daughter of
Benjamin and Mary Williams Brookshire of Randolph County. Their home
and the post office, which was a separate building in their front
yard, was known as the "white house," because it was the only house in
that part of the county painted white. Mr. Brookshire was the
postmaster.

After graduating from Jonesville Female Academy, Miss Brookshire
taught school in Randolph County.

In 1859, she married Manliff Jarrell and moved to High Point, where
her husband's family had already moved from Pleasant Garden.

In 1862, Manliff Jarrell purchased the first residence built in High
Point by his brother-in-law, Seborn Perry, and enlarged it into the
well-known Jarrell's Hotel. The hotel was operated by Mr. and Mrs.
Jarrell.

She was active in church and civic life in the community and was known
as a business woman, joining her husband in his varied business
interests.

Mrs. Jarrell died in 1926 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

The memorial is given by her granddaughter, Pauline Simmons Wertz, who
also honored Manliff Jarrell in 1971.

My father is Bob brookshire from washington I know I am related to alot of you I just dont know who you are my father had half brothers and sisters as well from cal. aunt sharon i remember and there was uncle goerge who died in vietnam I have a couple really old photos of my great, great grand fathers withh a bottle tipped over his shoulder and three generations when it was taken my brother daniel dayton brookshire passed away last march and i thought it would be great to find out who we are related to

There are Brookshaws, Brookshires and Brookshiers, to name a few. Let's start off with James Brookshaw, my grandfather, who came to America, Maryland, Somerset County in 1674 with his wife Elizabeth. They came as indentured servants, but the name was eventually changed to Brookshire. Fast forward to the Revolutionary War and the name is then James Brookshire, my 5th grandfather, who served in that war. I would suggest you also check under the other names as shown above - looks like you could be a Brookshire who stayed a Brookshaw. Let me know if you have any other family member names that could be checked and I will be happy to assist.

I believe his actual name is Beverly Brookshire. He was born abt 1794 and married Susanna Brookshire (her actual maiden name).

The first record I have for him is an 1820 Federal Census in Greenville Co., SC.

Males (U10) 1(26-45) 1
Females (U10) 2 (26-45) 1
(M33-120, p. 75)

In 1830 he first moved to Warren Co., TN as I found him on a census there, then apparently he moved that year to Macon Co., NC. By 1840 he is back in Greenville Co., SC, and remains there.

He is listed as the son of James Brookshire b. 1760 and Martha (perhaps Wright).

When my son and Brian visited the Phelps County Historical Society, located in the old Court House in Rolla, they had copies of "The Bushwackers" on hand and for sale. That was the summer of 2009. The lady working for the society was very helpful and can probably help anyone wanting a copy. My father was Ivan Brookshire, youngest brother of Coy and Alvin.

I appreciate all the info you sent! Do you know if any Brookshires served in the confederacy? Seems with roots in North Carolina there would have been one!

James Brookshier served in the revolution (I am a DAR member so it would be great to find documentation of the lineage-they are sticklers for detail-I have 2 patriot ancestors already.)

Yes any photos you are willing to share would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been to Lock Springs since childhood and obviously Texas is a "fur piece".

Good info. Do you have Bible Record or other to show Levan Brookshire to be the son of James & Martha Brookshire? One always hopes.

Hello, Linda. Levan is also my ggg grandfather. Here is some information that might further help you. Also, Brookshier is the correct spelling in this case. James, Levan's father, is of course your patriot. He served in the Maryland militia and died in Tennessee in 1815.

Ok - my tree is public hope that helps. Levan W Brookshire was born in 1805 in North Carolina (parents were James Brookshire and Martha Wright). Levan died in 1864 in Livingston, Mo. He was married to Martha Frith and had a son Lysander Brookshire.

Levan was my ggg grandfather. Please let me know if there's any info on him especially any military history. Thanks! Linda

Brookshire Texas was named for my Grt Grt uncle Nathaniel (Nathan) Brookshire/Brookshier.
