A few weeks ago while on my way East, I stopped in to see the East Texas Oil Museum in Kilgore, TX. On one of the walls was an old advertising poster announcing the opening of the Brookshire Self-service Grocery in Tyler TX. As I recall, This grocery chain started in Tyler in 1928. I took a picture of it. Lots of special prices....If anyone interested in this family wants a scanned pic, advise me and I will be glad to send.
Rick

Joe,
I just got back from a trip to find that cemetery. Prior to leaving, I spoke with J.J. Brookshire, who visited it in the late 1980s. Stopped by the Pickens CO courthouse and talked with a historical society member there and the land office. It is indeed a jungle of briars, vines, rattlesnakes and new growth trees. Had a GPS, camera, knippers and machete with me and after hacking for 2 hours, GPS said I was there (in a 50 meter vicinity). Did stumble on a U.S. geodetic survey marker in the woods and photographed that. Went back and tried again with a man who knows the area. finally gave up when my 65 yr old body gave out. Never found it. I have made arrangements with him for him to go back in the fall (He's younger) after some of the growth has died out and see if he can get pictures of the tombstones. Told him I would compensate him for his time if he would clear the area around it. We'll see what happens later this year if he follows through.
Regards, Rick

My great grandfather was Nathaniel Brookshire of Phelps county Missouri. My grandfather was Robert Lee Brookshire. Robert was one of around 9 or 10 children. He also had around 9-10 children, one of whom was my father, Ivan Brookshire. I have a picture, if I can find it, of Nathaniel with his family. Robert was maybe in his early 30's at the time. Alvin Brookshire was my uncle, he died in the 70's I believe. Alvin was in the service in WWI. He and Mildred had a farm in southern Missouri that I visited around age 8 (early 1960's). I have more to share.

Due to the date of your posting, I hope this reaches you. I have more to share. You can reach me at jbrookshire@mchsi.com or jerryrb@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

My son, Brian, and I are thinking about taking off for Missouri to Brookshire Cemetery in Phelps County Missouri, just south of Rolla. We are from Des Moines, IA, so were are a little removed from the Edgar Springs area where my parents were born.

By the way, I have a copy of the Bushwackers. My wife bought it over the internet for my birthday a few years ago.
I love telling the story where my great grandfater was hung ((kind of).

The one Carl Brookshire passed along to me were destroyed by our new puppy; said puppy has been replaced by a cat! If it can be eamiled, as an attachment, then great! It not, I'll glad help you with costs associated with it.

Tracy Brooksher-Saunders

Do you have any of Nathaniel and Sarah or their parents?

I have pictures of Eck, Rio, Carroll, Nathaniel and Sarah. I know Adells daughter, who owns the Bible. Also, I was contacted a couple years ago by Carroll's long lost son.

Thanks, Jan in GA

I found the following in with the Dawes applications. No other Brookshire as of yet

Choctaw Brookshire Grares 0 M MCR6452 P
Choctaw Brookshire Sallie 0 F MCR6452 P

The MCR6452 is the card number I believe the Grares should be for Graves possibly. I do not have him in my records but seems I remember running across the name before. It has been mentioned before that Sallie may have been of Indian blood. Could this be the Sallie O-Ha-Yo Graves that married James, who died in Shelby Co, Tx, son of James and Martha?

Norm, Try Aunt Maude's side of the family. Her maiden name was Burdett. Her father was Mortimer Eugene Burdett. Her mother was Maude B Rhoades. She had 2 sisters yet one died early when they lived in Florida. Ladora Isabell was her surviving sister. She had married 3 times before she died. Benjamin Grady Merritt was 1st marriage, second marriage Homer Vernon Shapley and third was Delmar L Taylor
I am not sure at this point if she had any children. Aunt Maude also had 2 brothers, Harold A Burdett and Frances, (Frenchie) who married Fern C Sheets.Together they had 5 children, Edwin, Bobbie Ann, CATHY, Donna and Willie. I have yet to dig any deeper on this side since It is not technically on our side of the family. Good Luck and if I find anything else, I will let you know. Sandra

Willis Brookshire of Gainesville, TX

Does anyone have anything on Willis Brookshire of Gainesville, Tx? I have a copy of a postcard in which he and my ggggrandfather William Riley Brookshire/ier of Caldwell Co, MO, had correspondance in later 1800's. Trying to figure out William Riley's parentage and siblings. Some have tried to tell us who they were but had no proof to back it up. Caldwell County court house has had 2 major fires and most all the proof went up with them it seems. Anyone have bible records or anything else which might be helpful? We would greatly appreciate it.

Sometime between 1920 & 1930 census James dropped the Holbert and went by Butler only. James & Ollie had at least 11 children.
I'm sorry for lacking some of the right information. I'm not very good at this, probably why I haven't found her. Been looking off/on for over 20 years now. 3 deployments to the Middle East and 26 years has made a few of the details hard to remember.

Angela lived with her Mother in 1981-1982 in Seattle, WA, was 16 years old then. I can't remember her birth date, but she said she was born in California. Moved in 1983 to live with her Father. Not married as far as I know of. I don't know her siblings names, I never met them.

I can't remember her Mothers last name, I think her first name is Cathy or Kathy. Her Mother didn't keep the name Wood, it was different.

Father is Thomas C. Wood, 61, still lives in Monroe, WA. Phone number is unlisted.

Step Mother is Joan M. Wood, 55.

Found a Grandmother? Eugena W. Wood, 101. Not sure if she is still living or not.

Other relatives are: Katherine E. Wood, Edwin T. Wood, not sure if they are bother/sister or aunt/uncle to her though.

Aunt and Uncle were Maude and Louis Brookshire from Seattle, both deceased.

I am in Kentucky, been here since 1986. I knew her from Seattle when I was 16, We were first loves. I still carry those feelings for her, always have. She gave me a bible before she left that belonged to her Uncle Louie (Louis Brookshire) and wrote in it, "To Norm from Angela, November 29, 1982". We were forced to be apart. We kept in touch best we could, but her Father finally just told her she couldn't be in contact with me any longer. Crushing isn't the word. But I went into the Army in 1985 and my life changed in 1986 when my Father died. I was lost even further. But I never gave up thinking of her, and now I'm 42, been back and forth and in and out of combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, made it home alive. I need to tell her why things happened the way they did. Why I never came back to find her in Washington. A day doesn't go by that I don't think about her. I sleep with that bible next to me, it has her handwriting in it, the only material memory I have left of her. Good or bad, I need to do something with this chapter of my life. I still have this bible and is probably the most important things I have.

Does that better explain things?

I've been looking off and on for Angela Wood, for over 20 years now, haven't been able to locate her. Its frustrating to say the least since I live in Kentucky. She is an acquaintence from my past that I would like to locate and talk to again. I have a lot of great memories. She loved photography, indian type necklaces had blondish/light brown hair and amazing eyes. :) She had lived in Seattle (Ballard) with her Mom (Cathy?/Kathy?)in 1981-1982, then moved to Monroe to live with her Dad in 1983. I believe his name was Pete Wood and had I think 2 step brothers and 1 step sister. It would be great if anyone could help any. Her Uncle and Aunt livced in Seattle, WA, their names were Louis (Louie) and Maude Brookshire. Lived near Greenlake at one point, I remember visiting them with her there. Thanks. I still have the bible that she gave me in 1982, I wonder if she remembers that? It was her Uncle Louies, and she passed it on to me. Such a sweet thing to do.. Well, thanks again and I hope someone can help.

Hi,

I have no way of knowing, but when my grandfather, Newton Barham (grandson of Sarah Brookshire), moved to Tahoka, Texas, from Mississippi (Philadelphia, I believe)he brought an older black man with him, named Luke. This was in the 1920's.

The first recollection of Luke I have is when I was around 6-7 years old, and that was in the early 1960's. I would estimate that Luke was in his 70's or 80's at that time, (But he could've been younger...to a child "everyone is old"). I believe he died when he was in his late 80's or early 90's, and is buried in Tahoka, Texas.

I will ask my parents about him, if they remember his full name. Good Luck with your search. I am not good with the computer, but I will try to scan the pictures...which may or may not work.

Thanks,
Debbie

I am sorry. On a previous post, I had stated that a Black gentleman came with my Grandfather, Newton Barham from Mississippi, after WWI. I stated his name was Luke, but after I posted, I remembered he went by "Luck". His given name was Leon McCay or McKay. He did live to be around 90, and he is buried in Tahoka, Texas. I don't know about his family.
Debbie

Hi,

I too am a descendant of Sarah Jyles (sp) Brookshire and Nathaniel Barham. They are my great, great grandparents.
Parents of Edgar "Eck" Bolen Barham (wife: Rio Viola Coughran) Children: Earnest Barham, Newton Milton Barham (my grandfather), Admiral Dewey Barham, and Adell Barham (Lofton). I also have photos. I just started looking up the family history (again) tonight, and came across this web page...the Brookshire family Bible. Amazing!
Email me if you like.

Thank You,
Debra Barham Smith
Ingleside, Texas
