Norah Essex Broomfield (Peggy)

I'm looking for any information about my grandmother Norah Essex Broomfield (1916-1961). Her father was James Broomfield (b.1879) and mother was Margaret Winter (1880-1933).

James and Margaret moved to Australia from England where Norah was born in Adelaide, South Australia. James was a blacksmith and apparently a violent alcoholic. Margaret and Norah fled from Australia back to England with the help of Bill Winter (I'm not exactly sure who this is either).

Eventually she met my grandfather Norman Francis Johnston (apparently in Egypt) and moved to Edinburgh, Scotland and had 5 children.

If any of this rings any bells with anyone, I'd die to know what you know! :)

Hi Phillip, thank you for your message, i have talked with my uncle this morning and it does seem correct that Charles Broomfield 1858 and Hannah Mary Etheridge 1860 are Dorothy's parents. It appears that Charles and Hannah had four children Mary, Frederick, Frances and Dorothy ( i only knew of Frances and Dorothy until this morning). What line of Broomfields do you come from ?. My e-mail address is rachel_wheeler@live.co.uk if you want to get in touch. Many thanks. Rachel

Dorothy had a sister Frances Cecilia Georgina Broomfield. Can anyone help with any info on Dorothy and Frances parents ?. Many thanks. Rachel

Hi - I didn't get your name I'm afraid.

Strangely enough, I only met 2 new "Broomfield" folks yesterday, and I'm meeting 2 more tomorrow. Currently in Hampshire and the people mentioned above are all related through a sister of my grandfather!

Oddly enough, my grandfather's middle name was Seymour too!

There is a huge amount of research available on the BROOMFIELD family, with one story dating back to the year 1100 (to do with King Rufus).

Just to keep you interested, have a look on the internet for a book whose author was George Aaron Broomfield (my great uncle). The book is called "Pioneer of the air - Samuel Cody)".

Regards,

Hutch

We have just started researching our family tree and have gone back to George Broomfield (b 1846 in Eling), just waiting for confirmation that his parents are Mark Broomfield and Ann (nee Humby). Know his wife is Elizabeth Bartley (d of Rice Bartley and Elizabeth Mells) and back one more generation on that side. Any more relevant information about the Broomfields would be very gratefully received.

Our line comes through George's son William Henry and his son William Seymour.

Thank you

I have found that a lot of trees have her as Congdon Stephens when in fact Stephens was her uncle even though they were commonly known in NZ as Congdon Stephens. I would be interested in conferring with you or for that matter anyone who may be able to assist.

If you are interested, let me know and I'll attach them to an email for you.

There's also a very good story about the "BROOMFIELD V PURKESS" feud that lasted for 700-800 years going back to King Rufus in 1102 A.D.

Regards,

Hutch

Hi Nicholas,

Glad to be of help. As for the Scottish theory I am afraid nothing found north of the border. However there is an unproven theory of where the name Campbell came from, but please note the word unproven!

Andrew Leonard Voullaire (known professional as Mr. Campbell) had parents called John Anthony Voullaire, possibly born in Geneva Jean Antoine Voullaire 17th September 1755, and his mother was Mary Ann Durand. John Anthony Voullaire was the headmaster of the Huguenot School in Windmill Street, just off Tottenham Court Road, London between 1790 & 1812. Now somwhere back down the Huguenot family line the name Champels appears and it is just possible that when Andrew was looking for a 'stage name' he Anglicised the name to Campbell - so not a bit of tartan in sight.

Another theory - but still only a theory - is that Andrew Leonard & Sophia Elizabeth Broomfield met while working at Sadler's Wells Theatre, and this is based on an old playbill for Monday 20th April 1829. On that evening Mr. Campbell was performing in "Rathkeil Sullivan; or, The Feuds of Loch Lomond" and futher down the bill there is "A Posturing Pas Deux" by Mr Walbourn & Miss J. Broomfield. The problem with this theory is the initial is wrong, and it is only four months before the first son of Sophia Elizabeth Broomfield & Andrew Leonard Voullaire was born on 7th August 1829, Frederick Verves Voullaire Campbell. You will also notice the birth was 4 years prior to their marriage! Still perhaps Miss J. Broomfield was Sophia's sister.

The actors certainly kept their performances a family affair, because at a benefit performance for Mr. Osbaldiston, on Tuesday 30th August 1836, at Sadler's Wells Mr. Campbell is not only performing but is also stage manager. Also performing that evening was a John Benjamin O'Donoghue (known professionally as Mr. Dunn), and he was in fact son-in-law to Andrew Leonard because Mr. Dunn had married his daughter Maria Louisa Voullaire.

On that same playbill there is also mention of a Mr. Rogers and that name is also connected to the family later by marriage. Andrew Leonard & Sophia Elizabeth had a son named John Henry Voullaire Campbell born 15th December 1837, at 35 Rawstorne Street, Clerkenwell. He grew up to marry his cousin Rosina Broomfield Rodgers on 29th September 1868 in St. Sepulchre Parish Church, Northampton. So you see they did like to keep it in the family!!!!

By the way I think Sophia Elizabeth parents were Thomas Broomfield & Mary Ann Green who married on 4th August 1807 at St. Clement Danes.

I would love to hear of any more news about the family, and I don't mind being told I am wrong in my theories - I would rather know than go off down a wrong road.

Best Wishes,
Patsy

Hi Patsy
Your research has been invaluable far! My wife's mother is a Voullaire-Campbell, related back to Andrew and Elizabeth Broomfield. Her mother was convinced she had Scottish roots, given the Campbell part of the surname and the fact that she had Scottish cousins and visited Scotland regularly as a child (her mother was Irish, so it was definitely a Voullaire-Campbell link). Do you know if there is indeed a Scottish link somewhere? It seems so strange to have chosen Campbell to tag onto Voullaire in the first place! Thanks.

Hello! My great grandmother was Lucy born 1857 and was the one above Clara Bessy. I have managed to find out some
about the other siblings. Clara married 1904 I think in
Kensington and after that ?
Do you know any more about Mary the eldest for instance.
I have found out a bit more about Simeon and been to
Merthyr Cynog where Gwenllian was born.
News?
