Florence is the daughter of Joseph and Huldah A. (Allen) Hannum. The simplest summary comes from Joseph's obit:
OBIT: "The Soldier (KS) Clipper, Wednesday, 1 Nov 1911
Joseph Hannum
Born Mch 11, 1815, Died Oct. 25 1911
Joseph Hannum was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, March 13, 1815. Died in Soldier, Kansas, Octoer 25, 1911, aged 96 years, 7 months and 12 days.
For almost 40 years he lived in Ohio. In 1835 he was united in marrieage to Miss Dianna Clark. Nine children were born to this union, but two survive their father, Mrs. Charles Hungerford of Soldier and G. W. Hannum of Corning.
In 1852 he moved with his family to Iowa. Here in 1854 his wife died. In 1859 he moved to Kansas settling south of America City, and shortly after moved to what is known as Hannum farm.
In the fall of 1861he was married to Miss Hulda Allen, five children were born to this marriage all of whom survive, Mrs. F. M. Hannum, Mrs. John Brophy, Mrs. Bruce Walters, Mrs. Frank Stewart and Mrs. Robert Booth. In 1870 his second wife died, leaving him with a family of small children. In 1872 he married Mrs. Elizabeth Albaugh. Her death some three years ago is fresh in the memory of our people."
The obit continues with the usual puff.

Hi Jim

Thanks for that,it isn't bad news but it adds another dimension to the problem as the name I have for the 3 brothers father is Michael and Helen Phelen is the mother. It does look like the confusion could be due to coincidence that has mixed up two families with similar stories and names. A lot of Irish people emigrated to America around this time and Brophy is not a particularly rare surname. However I will keep investigating and I will let you know if i find anything.

Cheers
Kester

Hi Kester,

From time to time someone asks me if I'm related to the Brophy's who founded Brophy Prep. Since I've been trying to trace my lineage I decided to investigate them a little. The school is indeed named for William Henry Brophy. He arrived in New York City on April 11,1881, apparently with a Hugh Brophy and both of them went to Arizona. Both were about 20 years old when they arrived here. According to passports he later obtained, William was born on 12 Oct, 1863 in Baltinglass, County Wicklow, not Kilkenny. I hope this helps.

Regards,
Jim Brophy

Thank you for your email, it has being very helpful. It does sound like the family mentioned in the book has some connection to my strand of the Brophy clan. I live in Ireland so the mormons haven't reached this far yet but I have a brother in San Jose so it looks like he will have to do some research.

Thank you again for you reply

Kester Brophy

Hello kesbro. I think I can help you a little, or at least give you a push in the right direction.

My mother was a Brophy whose family emigrated from near Borris, County Carlow, to Halifax, Nova Scotia about 1829, and then on to Boston, Massachusetts in the 1880s, where their descendants still live. (I doubt very much that our families are related, though.)

When I first started my research a dozen or so years ago, I meet (via a Brophy message board) a Gerald Brophy from Arizona, I believe. At first we thought our families might be related but we later decided they weren't. I recall that he emailed me some excerpts from a privately published book about a Brophy family in which he was interested. I'm sorry to say that I don't still have those emails, but I definitely remember that one of the Brophys in the book was involved in the establishment of the Brophy College (or Brophy School, I'm not sure of the name) in Bisbee, Arizona. I believe this was a Jesuit school for boys, but I'm not absolutely sure about that. There was also something about one of the men having grand adventures in South America, and there was a sister named Mary Catherine who was married to a Cullen from Ireland. I'm quite sure he said he copied these pages from a microfilm he ordered at one of the Mormon's Family History Centers. I just checked their website (www.familysearch.org) and found the following info:

Title Though far away
by Frank Collen Brophy
Authors Brophy, Frank Cullen (Main Author)

Notes Microreproduction of original published: Glendale, Calif., U.S.A. : Privately printed by the A.H. Clark Co., c1940. 256 p.

Bibliography: p. [253]-256.

Includes Cashman, Cullen, Lalor, Moran and related families.

"One hundred copies of this volume were privately printed for members of the family and friends, January 1940."

William Henry Brophey (b.ca.1862) immigrated from Ireland to Bisbee, Arizona (via New York), and married Ellen Amelia Goodbory in 1890. Descendants and relatives lived in Arizona, California and elsewhere. Includes relatives in Australia and India, as well as in Ireland.
------------------

The microfilm number is FHL US/CAN Film 1454995 Item 6.

I hope you have a Family History Center near you so that you can check this out. I'm nearly certain that the Brophys in this book are the Brophys in your family!

I wish you the best of luck in your search. I've told you all I can remember about this book, but if you have other questions, please feel free to email me.

Cheers,

Donna Stevens

I am trying to find the descendents of these 3 brothers who were born in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland and emigrated to America. I am decended from their brother Denis who stayed in Ireland along with 4 other siblings. William is thought to have had Brophy college founded in his name by his Widow. James received the congrssional medal of honor and Michael is rumoured to have being the black sheep of the family and a bandit who drowned in the gulf of Mexico. However I have no evidence backing up these stories except family legends and would like to find out anything I can.

The Owen Gallagher family from that time period in Rosendale are definitely relatives. I know there was a murder in the family and a few vague details about it, but not much else about that. Do you have any other details?

Dear Anne,

I am following up on my cousin's - Bill Marshall - message. I am James Brophy and my grandparents were James Brophy and Alice Bolton. My father was James Thomas Brophy who died almost two years ago and my mother is Evelyn Quetchenbach (Brophy) who is still alive living in North Carolina. They had six children - James (that's me), Stephen, Mary, Kevin, Karen, and Terry.

These brief messages attached to this web site are very interesting because almost no one in my extended family knows very much about our Brophy side other than what we might remember from discussions with our grandfather and dad.

While growing up primarily in Rochester New York, I have lived in Canada since 1965. I am now a Canadian citizen.

Recently I asked Bill for help because I wish to explore the possibility of obtaining Irish citizen so that I could secure an Irish passport. Due to my Grandfather's Irish citizenship I am eligible to apply. One problem is obtaining the necessary documents that establish my grandfather's birth and then the my links to him. It is also uncertain the exact location of his birth in Ireland.

If you have any such papers or ideas about how I might secure such documents I would be very appreciative if you could share this with me.

I should briefly explain my interest in securing an Irish passport. I have worked in occupational and environmental health for over 30 years with my partner Margaret Keith. We are currently completing our third study on breast cancer and occupational risks. We would like to do some collaborative work with European researchers and it would be easier if one of us had a EU country passport.

Anyway, I have really enjoyed reading these messages. Anything you could tell me about my grandfather would be fantastic...

Thanks in advance

Jim Brophy
Windsor Ontario Canada

Mr. Gillin was born Sept. 20, 1860 [s/b 1862] on the farm where the late home was located and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dominick Gillin. In 1888, he married Miss Cecelia Brophy, the wedding taking place in St. Ann's Church at Long Grove. His long residence in one community and his genial disposition made him well known and he counted friends almost without number. Continuing to work his parents' farm after his marriage, he added many modern improvements and earned an enviable reputation as a successful agriculturist.
Bridget Brophy nee O'Connell

History of Scott County, Iowa 1882 Chicago: Interstate Publishing Co.:

Mrs. Bridget Brophy, nee O'Connell, was born in county Galway, Ireland, about the year 1817, and was there married to Thomas Logan, in 1837. He was born at that place in 1814. Of three children born of this union, one survives - Michael, born in September, 1840. Mr. Thomas Logan died in 1847, and in 1850 his widow came to the United States. She landed at New York and went at once to New Jersey, where she was married, in 1853, to Thomas Brophy, a native of Tipperary Co., Ireland. Their union was blessed with three children, two living - Edward, born June 2, 1856, and Cecelia, born Feb. 27, 1857. In 1865, Mr. and Mrs. Brophy came to Scott County and bought 40 acres of land, which they cultivated eight years, then bought the place where she now resides, of 200 acres, in Winfield Township. Mr. Brophy died very suddenly on the morning of the 13th of January, 1880. He was apparently as well as usual, ate breakfast with his family, and at 10 o'clock was a corpse. The cause of his death was supposed to be heart disease. He was a kind and indulgent father and a good neighbor, a man well respected in the community in which he lived. The sons are managing the farm, and raise grain and stock for the market at Davenport.

Donna Tywoniuk-Harbeck

My ancestors Luke, Hugh and Daniel McLoughlin were alleged to be involved in Fenian plot to obtain rifles from Sheffield with Hugh Brophy who was later captured and transported to Australia.( I assume this is the same Hugh Brophy ).

Yes this would be the same Hugh Francis Brophy.
I have been friends of a couple of his Relatives living in Melbourne Australia. They have done a lot of research into their Family History. I was just reading " The Great Shame by Thomas Kinealy " and Hugh Brophy is mentioned in terms of going to purchase guns for a Rising, but was eventually arrested in Dublin , and Transported to Fremantle, Perth with a number of other well known Fenian Convicts. He was a well known Builder in Dublin at the time.

He was involved in Building the First Bridge across the Swan
River in Perth Australia, and eventually moved to Melbourne and became a successful Builder there He is buried in Melbourne Cemetry and from talking to his relatives the Inscription reads Hugh Brophy Native of Queens County, being the present day County in Ireland of LAOIS. The Family have tried to trace his roots back to County Laois without sucess to date, mainly due to the absence of Census Records that were destroyed during the Civil War.
