Thought I would jump into this again. Though none of your names match my Brosch ancestors (I believe they went directly from NY to Nebraska), I have the fortune of living in Eureka, MO, about 30 miles from St. Louis. I don't know where you live, but if you are far away and haven't had a chance to visit, I can take pictures, get copies of originals, and the like. Let me know if interested. I do have a busy schedule, and don't know if I could get to it right away, but I would like to do that, as I've depended on people in other states for my information; this seems like a good time for payback. And we may find out that we are actually related, though going back to the "mother country". We'll see.

Jon. Oh, you can contact me at "writerjon2003@yahoo.com" or during the work week at "Jtomlinson@insituform.com".

Good Luck!

Hello again, Gordon -

I just got back around to researching the Brosch side.

My Brosch family appears in the 1900 Census (without my grandmother, Lena, who was born in 1903), Omaha, Douglas, NE, in Roll 923 Book 1, 1 Ward Distr. 9, Precinct 8, p. 98A.

There's a bonus here: I know Lena's parents were Johann Brosch and Henrietta Blaze; on this census record the Brosch's are living with Johann's parents!!! Johann's parents are Ferdinand Brosch, who was born in Germany, and Carolina _____?, also from Germany. All of Ferdinand's and Carolina's parents were from Germany.

Take care,

Jonathan

More info on Brosch's in Midwest and Clara Brosch

Gordon, it occurred to me that I should give you as much as I know on the children of Johann Brosch and Henrietta Blaze born BEFORE 1900, so you might be able to find the family in the census. Here are all the children, and their approximate birth year, except for Emil, Johann, and Lena, for whom I have death records and can give exact dates:

Johann, Nov 03 1890 to June 1986;
Heinrich, 1891 to ?;
Johanna, 1893 to ?;
Wilhelm, born and died 1895;
Clara, 1897 to 2002 (My Aunt Marion found her living in a nursing home in Grass Valley, CA and spoke with her a couple years ago - that's how I know my grandmother's siblings);
Emil, 8 Dec 1899 to 1 Mar 1998;
Gustaf, 1901 to ?
Lena, 21 Oct 1903 to 27 Aug 1992.

So Gordon, you should be able to find Johann(John) Brosch or Brosh married to a Henrietta with the following children living in 1900: Johann or John, Jr - age 9; Heinrich, age 8 or 9; Johanna, age 6 or 7; Clara, 2 or 3; and Emil, less than 1 yr.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE: If you can find descendants of Clara, ask about Johann and Henrietta's family bible; my Aunt claims to have seen it just after Henrietta's death in 1943, but hasn't seen it since. She thought that since Clara spoke the most fluent German that she may have inherited it and passed it on to her children (she had at least 2 sons and one daughter). Also, Clara married a man surnamed Jordan.

Harry,

I spent some time last evening going over all my Bohemian data from St. Louis census, church records, etc., and I do have some things you might want to add to yours if you don't already have them. It looks like there were two Katherine Brosch/Broz living during that time, with Joseph as a father married to a TOBERMAN. Mine is Broz, but since some of the Broz have church records for Brosch in earlier times, it is hard to differentiate unless checking for more details.

So you are now saying that yours was Rose Katherine, and not Katherine Rose?

Thanks for explaining your family line as I now believe I was given the Hlavsa info by error, and will have to find who my Catherine Broz really married!

Carol

Yes, we are talking about two different ones. The one you listed in 1880 census on Buel is the one I'm researching. We show Rose Katherine their daughter married Frank Hlavsa Jan. 15, 1883 at St. John Nepomuk Catholic church. I do not have Rsoe Katherine on the 1880 census. I figured she was working away from home. Now, I'll do some research to see if I can locate her for this census. All of her parents are buried in New Pickers cemetery. Jacob Broz (Brosch) in later years is shown living at home on 10th street. Both the mother and father show residence on 10th street when they died. I have some information on your Margaret & Joseph that I kept when I was doing research. I'll check what I have and send you a list. If you find anything on Frank Hlavsa and Rose Katherine let me know. They are buried at Ste. Peter & Paul Catholic cemetery.

Harry,

First, let's make sure we are referring to the same Joseph Broz/Brosch. The reason is that I have a birth for Joseph "about" 1831, and he dying on 5 Dec 1908 at 77yrs. Margaret was born "about" 1830 and died 6 Jun 1881 at 51yrs. Joseph remarried to Francesca Viskocil on 10 Jan 1887. She died 9 Jan 1928 at 74yrs. All three are buried together at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery in St. Louis.

I do not have any children listed with the 2nd marriage. Joseph, Margaret and Frances were all listed by Broz spellings on the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery site. The only Joseph Brosch I found listed was born much later.

It seems that we're referring to different Joseph's, about a generation apart in age. But I also had 9 children for Catherine mg. to HLVASA. Wonder if I was given the wrong info as there seems to be two different Catherine/Katherine Brosch/Broz about the same age. One is the one you have as sister to Jacob, but not living in the same household in 1880. Do you know where she was in 1880? The other is "Katie" - the one I found in 1880 as sister to Barbara and Mary, with a 48yr father, Joseph.

For Joseph's second marriage to Francisca, he is listed as 54yr widower and son of Joseph Broz, "backers of Dolm Lukavire in Bohemia".

There is a Jacob, boiler, & Joseph, tailor, both at residence 1726 Buel in the 1880 St. Louis Registry. Wonder if this is the Jacob and Joseph you are referring to? That seems to match the same address listed on the 1880 census you found for Joseph Brosch (1st enumeration - rejected) and then as Joseph Brosh (2nd enumeration). There is also a Josephine Broz in the 1880 census with a 7yr son, Jacob. Josephine is listed in the St. Louis Registry (after 1880) as widow of Jacob Broz, not saying that is the same one, however.

Carol - Yes thank you for the reply. I show them married that year on Jan. 15. Both were from Bohemia and had nine children. I show Jos. Brosch and Ann Toberman as her parents and both from Bohemia died in St. Louis. Besides Catherine (Katherine Rose) they had a son Jacob. Only show the two children. Found them in census listed under "Brosch". Both parents were b. approximately 1818. This is all I have except dates of death on family members. Have you found the ship or town in Bohemia?

I have no Idea if this is the same family, but:
My great-great grandmother was Mary Brewer, daughter of Michael and Annie Brosch. She was 107 years old at her death. According to her obit, she was preceded in death by a sister, Freda, and brothers, Fred, William, Henry and Emil. She died on June 20, 2002 and was born Sept 30, 1894. If she was indeed the daughter of your Michael Brosch, her daughter, (my great aunt) Charlotte is still living and of sound mind in PA. I may be able to find out something from her if you let me know. Hey! We may be related!

Dear Jonathon,

It appears that the relatives you listed are not in the same line as my ancestors unless there is some connection with Johann and Henrietta back in Germany. Do you know what part of Germany they came from and when? My known forbears orginate in Lower Silesia, a part of Poland since WW II, in the 1700s mostly in the district around what is now called Swidnica, Poland.

Two of the male ancestors moved from Silesia to the Wiesbaden and Hannover areas in the 1800s. I have met cousins from the latter location on a number of occasions.

In Hannover one of those male ancestor's name was Johann Heinrich Brosch but Johann was a very common name in those days. It referred to St. John. They may have used this religious first name until after confirmation but after that they were known by the second or secular name. So this relative went by the name Heinrich in his secular life. He also had a son Heinrich II. All of that branch remained in Germany.

Best Regards,

Gordon J. Johnson

I do not recognize any of the names. However, if you have access to archived copies of the San Antonio Express-News you might look for the obituary of your grandfather who died in 1986. Had he died prior to 1976 I could look him up myself for you.

Matt

Harry,

I hope you get this message as I'm just a year late at responding! When checking the Broz board, just happened to see Brosch, which is how some of the earlier Broz settlers in St. Louis spelled their name.

I'm wondering if the family you are referring to is the same as the following:

1880 Census - St. Louis
BROZ
Joseph 48yrs Laborer Bohemia
Margaret 50 Housekeeper Bohemia (nee Toberman)
Katie 23 Housekeeper Bohemia
Barbara 20 Works Hemp Factory Bohemia
Mary 17 Housework Bohemia

Info given to me was that there was an unknown male that emigrated with them, but he either died at sea or shortly after reaching New York, about 1867, so I was told. But that info has not been confirmed.

Barbara Broz married Stephen Malecek in 1884. They had a daughter named Anna Margaret, which makes me wonder if the mother listed above had a first name of Anna as well, which is why you have her listed as such.

I'll have to look up the Baca book info on this family. Wonder if they emigrated separately, or maybe the younger children were not listed. Do the ages match what you have?

Carol Rogers

Hi, Christina,

My grandmother was Lena Emily (Amelia) Brosch, born in 1903 in Germantown, Omaha, NE. Her parents were Johann Brosch and Henrietta Blaze. Johann and Henrietta had 8 children; they were, in order of birth (and all born in Germantown):
Johann, 1889;
Heinrich, 1891;
Johanna, 1893;
Wilhelm, 1895;
Clara, 1897;
Emil, 1899;
Gustaf, 1891; and
Lena, 1903.

Lena, as I said, was my grandmother, and I can give you more detail on her. The only others I know anything more about are Wilhelm, who died as an infant, Clara, who died in 2002 at the age of 104 in Grass Valley, CA around Easter, and Emil, who died at the age of 98. Clara was married to a man with the last name Jordan. Their sons are or were doctors, and their daudghter was a nurse. The children, in order by birth year, are:
Johann, 1889;
Heinrich, 1891;
Johanna, 1893;
Wilhelm, 1895;
Clara, 1897;
Emil, 1899;
Gustaf, 1901;
Lena, 1903.

I can provide more detail on my grandmother, Lena.
Henrietta (Blaze) Brosch - Possibly Prussia to NY then NE

Looking for information on the Blaze family, who came through Ellis Island in 1883. Do not have father's or mother's first names, though the last names are Blaze and Perkisa. They arrived with their three daughters and one son. All I know is that one daughter was Henrietta, who was 14 when the family arrived in New York. The family did not have enough money for all to make the train trip to their destination in NE, so Henrietta stayed behind, working as a servant to a wealthy Polish family in New York. At 16, she was married to a man named Fritz Gritsky or Gritski. The two had a son, and Fritz died shortly thereafter. By that time, Henrietta had the means to join her family in Nebraska, where she met and married Johann Brosch somewhere between 1888 and 1889. I can be reached at writerjon2003@yahoo.com. Thanks for your help!

Jonathan

Several German immigrants with the maiden name Brosch arrived in the midwest in the 1880s or early 1900s: Anna Maria Geisler nee Brosch, Emilie Heutte nee Brosch, Clara Evert nee Brosch and Lina Lippman nee Brosch. The last three lived and died in Chicago. The first died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1893. Lina was a niece of the other three who were sisters. Contact with any descendants will be welcomed. Many other relatives remain in Germany, especially in Hannover and Wiesbaden.

Joseph Brosch and Anna came to St. Louis, Mo . through New York with their daughter Katherine Rose and Jacob. Anna's maiden name was Toberman.They were listed in Baca book Vol. 4 p. 182p. They are from Bohemia, where I am not sure. Any help would be appreciated.
