Hi Georgie,
My email address has changed since I was last on this site. A pity you hadn't contacted me before you came to Australia as my brother lives in Brisbane and my sister about half way between Brisbane & Toowoomba, which I take it was where you went to. Jackie, in particular, would have love to have met you. Did you forget to mention Fran in the email?

If you would like to contact me direct on ;

dencurt@westnet.com.au

I have information on many BROTHERHOOD descendants which we could talk about.

Regards,

Christine

Hi Christine, It's one of Joan's (Alice) daughters, I have seen the odd email you have sent to Patsy in the past but until now have never had time to take any interest in the family history, but now we are retired and I would like to try to get to know more, I have tried to look up my mums birth record but can only find the one for her marriage to dad, I did find Grandad's (John William) medal records for WW1, we sisters - Jillian, Roma, Patsy, me known as Georgie but recorded as Lesley and our remaining brother Andrew, (Tony sadly died 18 months ago) want to record Mum in the roll of Honour at the Bletchley Park site as she served there during WW2, but up to now I am not getting very far, I would also like to have a family tree on here so would love to hear what info you have, funnily enough we just got back from a trip to Australia this week.
Your Georgie Peters...Lesley Blackey.

Re: BROTHERHOOD in Canada

Thanks for your reply. I now know we're on the right track. Sorting out the family lines is not easy as they are not unlike a hoorah's nest (not sure about the spelling as I've heard the expression all my life but never seen it written down). The reason I have information on James Brotherhood is because I thought his wife's grandfather, George Henderson (or "George of the 76th") was my gggf as he seemed to be in attendance at quite a few family b.m.d. functions in Quebec City and elsewhere over the years.

I am not able to sit at the computer for long stretches. It would be better if we could do direct e-mail, but there has been a change in the system and I don't think we can anymore. I'm sure I included my e-mail address in the original postings but they don't show up anymore and it was deleted from my response to you. I will work up a reply with further information, but it sometimes takes me a few days. I don't think I have exact dates of birth (or places for the matter) for George Henderson and Mary Cashel, but I did have some information from his military records and, of course the death and burial information in Canada.
I'll get together what I can and get back to you soon.
Bob Henderson, Florida, USA
Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I meant Lt. Wilfred Cashel Brotherhood, last child of M. L. Henderson.
It is complicated, indeed. Your ggguncle was John Henderson b.April 19, 1819 d.Dec 10, 1885 married on May 22, 1844 to Mathilda Lydia Henderson(!) b.Mar 24, 1818 d.Jun 1, 1891. Their daughter Mary Louisa Henderson b.Dec 22, 1846 in Quebec d.Nov 29, 1905 married James Brotherhood ( b.Jul 21, 1843 Chippenham, Wilts,UK, d.Oct 17, 1930) on Oct 21, 1868 and had 8 children in Canada.
James Bro then married again in England on July 31, 1908 to Maria van Stockum and had 2 children: James van Stockum Brotherhood (my father) b.Apr 20, 1909 d. Jul 30, 2004 and Willem Rowland Brotherhood b.Jan 22, 1912 d.Aug 2, 2003.
I do not have exact dates of the parents (George Henderson 1785 and Mary Cashel 1787) of Mathilda Lydia Henderson. Do you?
This is a bit complicated. When I first posted seven years ago, I had not quite sorted out the intricacies of my Henderson ancestry in Canada and things turned out a bit differently. Mary Louisa HENDERSON, who married James BROTHERHOOD was my gggf's brother's daughter. My gggf, William Simpson HENDERSON, had died in or near Stratford, ON in 1857 and his widow and children emigrated to the U.S. shortly thereafter. It has been a long time since I worked on this particular family, and I don't recall the details very well at this point. However, I shall look into what I have and let you know. I know my ggguncle had only the one daughter, so I assume she was the mother of Lt. Wilfred Cashel BROTHERHOOD whom you have as James Wilfred BROTHERHOOD, and she would also have been the first wife of James BROTHERHOOD, b. 1843. Do you have any information on her in your files? I don't think I have a date of death for either of them.

(it always WAS a fight whether it belonged to England or Wales...) was in our possession, and so James Wilfred stayed there before going to war.
Many, many more stories and publications exist about the family.
The proof on Jemimah Howes Linnell has never been found, to the best of my knowledge. However Robert Linnell's second wife was Peninah Howes Linnell, another daughter of Rev. John Howes of Eastwell Kent. If you are still interested in this, I can dig it out. There is a will for a Howes in London that proves this. I don't have the will, but there is an article in "The American Genealogist" also known as TAG, a very well respected journal that discusses this.
Dan McConnell, Linnell Family Association

My grandmother died recently and we came across a bible that belonged to John Brotherhood. According to the dedication it was given to him by Markfield Primitive Methodist Sunday School on 12 April 1868, Easter Sunday. The following names were written on the next page: John Brotherhood 19 July 1818, Elizabeth Brooks 27 May 1820, George Brooks 12 May 1839, Ann Brotherhood 12 Feb 1841, Mary Brotherhood 17 Feb 1843, Sarah Brotherhood 27 June 1845, Thomas Brotherhood 9 March 1847, Sarah Brotherhood 29 May 1849, Clarah Brotherhood 30 July 1851, John Brotherhood 11 Aug 1853, Emmerline Brotherhood 2 Oct 1855, William Henry Brotherhood 19 Jan 1858, Eliza Brotherhood 20 March 1860, James Brotherhood 20 Nov 1861, Anne Brotherhood 25 Jan 1866.
I'm not quite sure how this ties in with my family tree yet, the only Brotherhood I have proper information on is my gt grandmother Annie Elizabeth (1877). I presume one of the above-mentioned must be a parent.

Her branch of the family passed through Shepshed after living in Barrow Upon Soar and then moving on to Sheepy Magna, all in Leicestershire.

William, christened 28 December 1761 in Shepshed, is my 4 x g.grandfather.
Hi Joan. It may take me a while to find the documents that might be useful for you. My paper docs are not too well organized. The Linnell Family Association [LFA]has a nice newsletter and an excellent book, The Descendents of Robert Linnell, by Rachel Linnell Wynn. Most copies that I know of are in Massachusetts libraries, but I have one. They can be purchased through the mail for $35 if you are interested.
You can join the LFA and get the newsletter by sending a check for $15 [single] or $25 [Family] to Scott Linnell, Treasurer, 23 Liberty Knoll Drive, Colt's Neck, NJ 07722. The next LFA reunion is on Cape Cod, June 23-25, 2006
John Howes (House) as do we.They all descend through his daughter Hannah and the Rev. John Lathrop. I of course descend thru Robert Linnell and Peninah. I have seen Peninah in quotes after Jemimah, but never as a separate individual. I learn something new every day. Thanks again.

Joan

Hi Joan. There is no question that Peninah Howes Linnell is the daughter of Reverend John Howes [House] and the sister-in-law of Rev John Lothrop of Barnstable ,MA. I have her baptismal record in Eastwell Kent, and the article in TAG that relates the will of her brother in London. It is very possible [and personally I think so] that Robert Linnell's first wife was named Jemimah, but it is definitely not proven. For your purposes ,though, I don't think it matters. If you send me your address, I will copy the documents and send them to you.
Dan McConnell, Linnell Family Association

Thank you, I would very much like to have the proof. I had assumed that Jemima and Penina were the same person and that they were just not certain which one it was. I did get The Hereditary Order of the Society of Presidents and First Ladies of America to accept my papers using the Rev. John Howes
( House) as my consanguiine ancestor. Without looking at my papers, I believe five Presidents descend from him through Hannah who married the Rev. Lathrop, our Jemima (Penina) and I believe a brother. I do not have the papers in front of me, but if you would like to join the Society, I can get them to you.

Thanks, Joan

Does anyone have documentation they can send me with proof that Jemima was a daughter of Rev.John House and Alice Lloyd of Eastwell, England. I know that her sister, who married the Rev. John Lathrop is as well as her brother, Samuel House was. They all lived at Barnstable, Mass. in the early 1600s. I have the genealogy from there down, but want to connect Jemima as dau. of John and Alice House. Five Presidents: viz. Garfield, FDR, US Grant, Bush and Bush descend from the Rev. John House. I need it for my application to join Hereditary Order of Presidents and First Ladies of America Society. I am 72 and cannot get to libraries anymore.Hopefully I have a kind cousin out there who will scan it and send it. I know it appears in the Lathrop Genealogy, NEHGR, and the House Genealogy, just have lost my documentation.

My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Beatrice Brotherhood. She was born and bred in the United Kingdom - I think born in England somewhere. She later married my grandfather William Smith and my father John Kirby Smith was the youngest son born on 13 October 1899 in Sheffield. Later the family moved to Edinburgh, Scotland.

I have been trying to trace Beatrice and William Brotherhood's ancestry - to no avail. There do not seem to be very many Brotherhood's in the world.

I would appreciate all the help I can get.
Re messages from Bruce Brotherhood, Susan Bard, Harry Johnston - I posted a message earlier this year re my paternal grandmother whose maiden name was Beatrice Brotherhood. She married William Smith - my father, John, the youngest of 7 children was born in 1899 in Sheffield, England. Beatrice Brotherhood possibly originated from London, England, but I cannot be sure. Beatrice spent part of her married life in Sheffield and when my father was about 2 years old the family moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. I am having great difficulty tracing my Brotherhood ancestry at the moment. Anything I do find out I will send through to the Brotherhood message board.

I am trying to find more information re my paternal grandmother Beatrice Mary Brotherhood. I have found a Beatrice Mary Brotherhood christened 26 Sept 1864, Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, UK. Her father is listed as William Edward Brotherhood and mother Jane Amelia.

My grandmother married William Smith and they lived in Sheffield, England. Sometime after my father was born the family moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. William Smith was a Tailor by occupation. Beatrice and William had seven children, William, Eleanor (Nellie), May, Grace, Charles, Beatrice and John (my father born 13 Oct 1899). That is all I know about my father's family.

I would appreciate any help in tracing my Brotherhood connections. So far it has been really difficult to to find information. I only just came across this individual record on the Family Search International Genealogical Index and I am about to download Gedcom.

I will add another notification if I manage to discover more.

Regards

Christine Harrison

Hello,
Just curious. Are you, or do you know, the Logan Brotherhood who was mentioned in National Geographic about 25-30 years ago? Two of my friends and I called ourselves the "Logan Brothers" after characters in a book titled "Willard and the Bowling Trophies". I was thumbing through a NatGeo article about Newfoundland or Nova Scotia, I think, when I came across a photo and the caption mentioned "Logan Brotherhood" as one of the girls is the photo. It stuck in my mind but I can't find the article to save my life.
Thanks,
Big E
I see a directory listing of Lansing E. Lincoln in the 1890 Buffalo NY area working as a cattle salesman for Kerr, Lewis & Company. If you send me an email I will try to attach them to a return email.
Julie Johnston
juliejk@umich.edu

BROTHERHOOD in Canada

Don't know if this will help anybody, but my gggrandfather's daughter, Mary Louisa HENDERSON married James BROTHERHOOD 21 Oct 1868 at St. James Methodist in Montreal. Their children were:
Ethel Louise, b. 9 Aug 1869, Montreal, QU
Rowland Henderson, b. 7 Aug 1871, Toronto, ON bapt. Montreal
Maria Adelaide, b. 21 Jun 1873, Stratford, ON, bapt. Montreal

In addition to these baptized in Montreal, there was a Wilfred Cashel b. 3 Nov 1886, Stratford, ON, who may have been a child not baptized in Quebec (we have not searched records in Ontario as yet) The birthplace and middle name, Cashel, which was his grandmother's maiden name and appears quite frequently in our Henderson family, both argue strongly for his being a child of this couple.

Lt. Wilfred Cashel BROTHERHOOD, 14th Bn, Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regt.) was killed 24 Apr 1915 at Ypres, France. His military papers list his father as James BROTHERHOOD, but give his address in 1914 as Hollandene, Tintern, Monmouthshire, England(sic). That should read Wales, but you know the English. I can't explain the latter as James BROTHERHOOD shows up in the 1901 Census of Montreal, QU as a person born outside of Canada and shows his immigration date as 1866, which would concur with what we know of him; however, it would appear he returned to his homeland between 1901 and 1914. His children would all be gone from home by then, so it is possible he fell victim to the old Welsh disease "haraidd", or Longing for the Old Hills.

Bob Henderson
Florida
