MUSCATINE, Iowa
Marline H. Brotherton, 84, of Muscatine, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at the Muscatine Care Center.

Services will be at the Nichols Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory.

The Rev. Hal Green will officiate. Anne Olson will be the pianist. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

A graveside committal service will be at Wyaconda Cemetery, Wyaconda, Mo.

Visitation will be at the Nichols Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials may be made to Senior Circle Adult Day Care of Muscatine or the Muscatine Care Center.

She was born October 10, 1915, at Gorin, Mo., the daughter of William Karl Horn and Lillian Amelia Kraus. She married Walter Boley Brotherton on April 9, 1939, at Wyaconda, Mo.

She was a graduate of Wyaconda High School. She was self-employed as a piano instructor for many years. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. She was an avid collector or art glass and held a life-long interest in music.

While living in Missouri, she was the church pianist, children's choir director and accompanist.

She is survived by two sons, Alan and his wife, Judy, of Muscatine, and William and his wife, Rita, of Terra Haute, Ind.; four grandchildren, Mrs. Clay (Sarah) Farebrother and Rachel Brotherton, Amy and James Brotherton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Walter in 1998.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.
William J. Brotherton, 53, of Terre Haute, formerly of Nashville, Ind., died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.

Services are at the DeBaun Funeral Homes Springhill Chapel. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Friday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Nashville.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Midwest Affiliate and the Memorial and Tributes Program.

He was born Nov. 22, 1947, in Keokuk, the son of Walter Boley and Marlene Horn Brotherton. He married Rita Shapiro Jan. 1, 1972.

He received bachelors of arts degrees in biology from Culver Stockton University in Canton, Mo. and Indiana University. He received a doctorate in optometry from Indiana University in 1974.

He was a member of A.F.M. Local No. 25, Stonehenge Jazz Band, T.H. Concert Band, Terre Haute Tennis Club, Indiana Optometric Association, collector of Indiana Art and American Impressionistic Art of the 19th Century, ISU Concert Band and Wabash Valley Bottle Club.
He was an optometrist for Eye Mart in Terre Haute.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Shapiro Brotherton of Terre Haute; a son, James M. Brotherton of Charleston, S.C.; a sister, Amy Brotherton of South Bend, Ind.; a brother, Alan Brotherton and his wife, Judy, of Muscatine; a brother-in-law, Paul Shapiro, of Nashville; a mother-in-law, Zelda Shapiro, of South Bend; two nieces, Rachel Brotherton and Sarah Farebrother and her husband, Clay.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

James Ronald Brotherton, was born on May 10, 1940 in Moline, Illinois, the son of James Raphield. and Sarah J. Hathaway Brotherton. On May 5, 1958, James was united in marriage to Ella M. Wilson in Iowa City, Iowa. James was employed at JI Case from 1958 until 1987. He then was the owner and operator of Island Grocery from 1987 until its closing in 1997. James was currently employed by Quest Diagnostics.

James will be deeply missed by his wife, Ella of Muscatine, three sons, James R. Brotherton, Jr. of Monticello, Iowa, John Brotherton and his wife, Donnetta of Grandview, Iowa, and Joseph Brotherton and his wife, Kim of Wapello, Iowa; one daughter, Roxanne Schlapkohl and her husband, Gary of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Ian Schlapkohl, Steven, Kristin, Samantha, Calvin, Mikayla and Allison Brotherton; one great-grandson, Parker Kress and one great-granddaughter, Hailey to be born in February. and one sister, Judith Goodrich and her husband, Richard of Summerville, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers in infancy, John and Jack Brotherton.
