That's great. I'll see if I can get a Brotherton cousin of my wife's to also do the test. Someone needs to take the reigns and be a Brotherton Project administrator. What company are you doing the testing through- and how many markers are you doing. - thanks, Allan Griffith

William G. Brotherton; Lincoln, NC>Hardeman, TN.>Tippah, MS.>?

My gggrandfather George W. McDonald married Mary Brotherton April 1865 in Dyer Co., TN. Mary, born 1845 in TN, listed her parents as being from NC and Virginia respectively. This matches in every way with what I can find out about Mary, the daughter of William and his wife Martha Francis.

William G. is a younger son of Joseph of Lincoln Co., NC. and his father was living with him in 1850 in Tippah Co., MS. William appears to be the Winston Brotherton living in Lafayette Co., MS in 1860 and the W. G. Brotherton in Madison Co., TN in 1870. I cannot locate him or any other family members after 1870.

George and Mary McDonald were living in Haywood Co., TN in 1880. Mary died sometime after 1880 and 1888.

Is there anyone who has any information about this line, no matter how limited or uncertain the source? I have pretty much exhausted the available online information without a lot learned.

I would appreciate any help what so ever.

Don Summers

Henry Brotherton

Reba: The only positive factual that I have on William and Margaret are in the 1850 Census Cocke County Tennessee.
William was 70 and Margaret 65. William was born in NC in 1780. In 1850 they were living next to James, Moses, and John whom I believe were his sons. James is my ggggrandfather so that would make William my gggg. Anymore info you have I would appreciate. As far as Henry I have seen some census with him on it and thought that he was brother to James but not sure where he fits in. I do know that James was born in 1823, John in 1829, and Moses in 1830. It is the years between Henry and James that has me not sure if same family. He could of been Williams by a first marriage but I have no way of proofing that

Dick Brotherton

I found Thomas W. Brotherton in the 1930 Census in Mclead, Sweetgrass, Montana as a boarder. Mable & Clair are not there. Did Clair have a middle name, if so you might search his middle name as much of my family used there middle names not there first name. 1920 the family was in Wyoming, 1930 Thomas is in Montana, They may have divorced or they may have died. Check the usgenweb.com for Montana & Wyoming.

Anyone interested in "Y" chromosome DNA testing for the Brotherton lines?

I'm surprised that there has been no submissions from male Brotherton's for "Y" chromosome testing. I did just have a Brotherton on one of the main genealogy boards just ask about this. I have no financial interest in the testing companies, but have done my own surname thru FamilyTreeDNA.com and found them to be very helpful. The benefits keep getting greater, the more other lines who submit for testing to enable broader comparisons. The most comprehensive test that I know of currently available has 67 markers chosen for genealogy intent. That test costs about $270 US dollars, but 37 markers are available for about $190. I would advise not getting less than 37 markers, and if 67 are affordable, then do the maximum. Many are getting descendants from each line to join together to split the cost for a couple of descendants to do the test, since many who retain the surname are themselves not interested in genealogy. I'm not claiming to be an expert on this subject but would like anyone to write me if you have any questions about the testing. I do know that just a few years ago you could only get 12 markers for much more than the cost of 67 are now, but I doubt the price will descend much more - at least near-term. Thanks, Allan Griffith, Bloomington, IL, USA - magrif@verizon.net

I am also descended from Alexander Brotherton, through his younger son, John Alexander, who married Esther Duguay. You must be descended from the oldest son, Adam.

Due to intermarriages between families and marriages to cousins, etc., I can also trace my family two and three times to the same line.

My ancestry includes those who came from France, Jersey, Ireland, Scotland, and the Basque region, to ultimately settle in the Bay of Chaleur/Gaspe region of Quebec. My Brotherton ancestors eventually emmigrated west to the United States, settling first in Duluth, MN, and then Superior, Wisconsin. Some moved across the country to Spokane, Washington, and then down to California.

If you would like to get in touch to compare information, I would be interested to hear from you.
