Hi, Just happened across your message regarding Brough families. I'm in Canada, and my gr-uncle was married to a Caroline Ethel (Carrie) Brough. Her grandparents were James Brough & Jean (Jane) Wetherspoon who were married in Abernethy, Perth in 1852.

Do you have James & Jean in your tree? I show them as having 13 children, with at least 4 of them having come to Canada.

JCM, born 11 Jul, 1785; married to Margaret Brough 17 Sep, 1807; died 13 Feb, 1854 in Abbeville, SC.

His father, Isaac Mathews was born 1750 in County ?? Ireland; married 12 Oct 1784 in Abbeville to Anne Calhoun. She was born 8 May 1755 in Augusta County, VA

Joseph and Margaret had a daughter Nancy Ann Norris Mathews, born 29 May, 1810 in Abbeville, dies 23 Mar 1884 in Randolph County, AL.

Nancy Ann married my relative Edward Robertson Burns (my grand-father's Great-grandfather)on 10 Dec, 1835 in Abbeville.

Edward is as far back as I have information on the Burns line. On the Calhoun line, I go back to about the 1200s in Scotland.

Married Francis Nellie Whitby 1900 in London.
He was a Theatrical manager when they married and the couple were entertainers for several years.

We think his father was Saul or Paul Martin Brough who stayed in the USA and may have been a Clerk in the Holy order.

Fanny Brough was born in Paris on 9 September 1852. She married Richard Sydney Bull (known as Boleyn) but the marriage was not successful and they lived separately. The only child of the marriage died young.

Fanny Whiteside Brough was not the sister of the actor Lionel Brough, but his niece, being the eldest child of his brother Robert Brough.

The confusion may arise because Fanny's brother, who was formally called Lionel Barnabas Brough, could not use that as a stage name because his uncle was already well known as an actor under the name Lionel Brough. He used his late father's name as a stage name.

James Harrington's death: 5 Nov 1904
30 Hamlet Street, Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts
Burial: 7 Nov 1904: St John's Cemetery (assuming Fall River)
Primary cause of death: Senile Debility
Father: Daniel Harrington
Mother: Julia Murphy
Person reporting listed just as daughter.

On several of the marriage records for the children, James is listed as father and Catherine as mother. I haven't been able to verify the last name of Catherine.

I have come across that very same problem. My mother had tons of old photos, most of which had no identification of the people in th pictures. Some people she knew, others she was unsure as to if they were siblings, cousins or friends. I'll see what I can uncover.

Yes, I am looking for additional info on the Harrington side. I have been able to get the names and approximate birthdates of Mary Etts's siblings from the Census. And I think I know who her parents were, but it's mostly guesses. After my father's sister died, her husband sent me a shoe box full of studio portraits of family members. None were identified! Most were made in Fall River, some in Ireland. Tbey have the photographer's studio names,but they are more than 100 years old, even if one or two were still in existance, the records would not be. It's frustrating.

I am the daughter of George W. Brough, son of George W. Brough, son of George W. Brough/Browe/Brault, son of Loren Browe (Laurent Brault.)
Your ancestor Lucy Brough married Charles Hanrahan, right? If you are still researching and active in Ancestry.com, I would be very interested if you have been able to find any information on the Irish side of this family. Mary Etta Harrington was Lucy's mother. I have been able to piece together a list of her siblings, but have no info on her parents.
I am on the other side of the country in Washington state.

Brough is a Scottish name - deriving originally from broch (the round fortified towers, unique to Scotland) : it is also a word in old Scots for the ring round the Moon and from their became the word 'burgh' for an enclosed (ie fortified) town as distinct from a mere village.
The pronounciation changes as one travels northward in Scotland. In the Lowlands it is ' bruff' in Perthshire etc it is akin to bruch (ch as in loch) and in the far north and the northern isles is becomes broch (ch again as in loch).
Look at a map of Orkney and Shetland for plenty of place names Brough.

Hi, I just found your message re Fanny Brough, who, I understand, is buried at Thundersley churchyard in Essex, having lived there in the Rectory for some years. My interest stems from my research into the history of Thundersley and her name as well as that of her brother Lionel Brough are mentioned by the Rev. E.A.B. Maley in his publication 'The ancient Parish of Thundersley, Essex' in about 1937.
If there is anything you can add to her story, written or visual, I would be most grateful, though I realise some time has passed since your posting.

One of my ancestors.James Challoner gives his place of birth as Stone, Staffordshire. He was born 1811 and I have found a corresponding entry of a birth and bapsism for 4 Sept 1811. He also may hae had a brother William. It gives his parents as Joseph and Elizabeth.
In 1851 Elizabeth was 70 years old, widowed and living with James in Lambeth, London.

I am not replying to this specific query but to ask you what became of the Aberdeen Robertsons board. I am presuming that it was being abused by someone and has ceased to be a family history board anymore. My name is Lesley Connell and at one time I was a member of the Aberdeen Robertsons board. Since I was last in touch with you I have managed to persuade a male "cousin " in Australia to supply me with a DNA sample. Unfortunately as yet we do not have a match with anyone. Seeking information about Mary Spink Brough b. 20 June 1871, Monifeith, Angus, Scotland, her husband William Hunter, and her parents, William Brough and Jean Knowles. William Brough was a market grardener, and can be traced in the censuses to 1901. Mary married William Hunter in 1901 in Dundee. I cannot find any of the four in the Scottish statutory death indexes, though all Mary's siblings appear. William Hunter is listed on their marriage certificate as a US Ship's Captain. I suspect that Mary and her parents immigrated from Scotland elsewhere, but have been unable to identify where. Any help would be appreciated.

According to my Grandfather, he was born in New York state, but was sold (illegally) to a family in Kentucky. I can find references to Jasper but they give no indication of who his parents were. There is a reference of him in a will for Thomas Brough. Jasper would have been born circa 1875.

I am wanting to verify

1) If he was actually sold into slavery

2) If he was sold, did he adopt the purchasing family's surname

3) Who his parents were

I have the same line as yours, except that when your information goes to Thomas Brough and then Ann, mine goes from William Brough, who is between Thomas and Hannah.

I am searching for any links, photographs or information relating to the following BROUGH line of Perthshire. Starting with my paternal Grandmother Margaret Brough, b. 13 May 1889 at 137 King Street Crieff. Her father; John Brough, b. abt 1850 in Dunning, Perthshire, died early late 1890's-1900's in Crieff. Her grandfather; David Brough, b. 1 April 1815 Parish of Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland. Spouse; Grace Martin b. abt 1820 in Gask, Perthshire, may have emigrated to Canada as there is a Grace Martin, registered as died 1895 in Lanark, Ontario, Canada.
Her Great grandfather was Thomas Brough, b. abt 1779 in Perthshire. Spouse: Isabel Halley, b. 13 November 1781 in Portmoak, Kinrosshire, Scotland. Very little is known about this link of our family. Perhaps due to the economic circumstances of the times, some of the extended links did emigrate to Huron County, Ontario Canada. Specifically Gregor MacGregor 1819-1900 and spouse Isabella McFarlane 1825-1912. Their eldest daughter was Jessie McNie MacGregor, my grandmother’s mother who stayed behind in Scotland with her young family including up to six brothers and sisters, not all surviving infancy?

I've just found your message to Peter Smeaton, and wondered if you've received a reply from him, as I've tried in vain to make contact with him over the past year or so, however without success.

It would appear Peter has done an amazing amount of research with regard to the Broughs in Perthshire and I was anxious to 'pick his brains', however have had no response from him.

I'm a Perthshire Brough, directly descended from Johnne Bruch (the spelling recorded at that time), b. 1538, who lived near Auchterarder.

I am trying to find out what happened to Benjamin Brough (b. about 1802 in Trentham, Staffs). He married Elizabeth Jones and had about 6 children. She died about 1836 and they remarried Ellen Sharman and had a further 3 children.

I am just trying to find out what happened to all the children. My great great grandfather John Brough (b 1840) was from Benjamin's second marriage. So I am just interested in ther est of the family and what happend to them. all.

My paternal grandmother was born Margaret Brough on 13 May 1889 at 137 King Street Crieff, Perthshire. Meg was the youngest of possibly six siblings. Her parents were John Brough of Dunning (deceased abt 1903?) and Jessie McNie McGregor of Thornhill, died abt 1935.

My great grandfather was John Brough (1840) and he was the son of Benjamin Brough and his second wife Ellen Sharman. Elizabeth Jones was Benjamins first wife and she died in 1837, so I believe that Mary is my great grandfathers sister., so her mother would have been Ellen Sharman as well.

I am a descendent of Edmund Holmes b 1783 in VA. His father was Jeams Holmes born in Staffordshire England. Date unknown.

I learned recently there is a family report that five brothers came to America together by way of Norway.

Edmund named his children Thomas, Sarah, Winifred, Simon, Charles,John, David, Mary Jane, and Clay?

Does any of this sound famaliar? I feel very lucky to have gotten this far!
