My grandad was also Broughman and I was told it is a German name. His name was Siebert Wandell and has a sister Margaret as well as several brothers. I believe they were all born in West Virginia.

Hi Gary, my dad is John William Broughman. My mother was Hester Louise Vass. My dad's father was Ollie Alexander Broughman. He was married to Lotte Mary Thompson. Her parents were Tommy Thompson and Susan Nicely. My mother's father was Robert Vass. He was married to Hester Louise Kelley. Her parents were Sarah(Tea) Kelley and George Wolfe (Cherokee). They were not married. Hester Louise Kelley and her father, George Wolfe are buried next to each other in the Zion Hill Cemetary near Fincastle, Va. (corner of routes 655 & 681) . Linda, I am Bob Broughman's daughter who is also Lottie May's son. Your mother is known by the name of Midge I believe. I am researching our family history and so far I have found out that we originated from Germany. Do you have any idea where in Germany? Ollie and Lottie are my grandparents also. My dad is John William Broughman. Still kicking at 92. The Broughmans are mainly Scotch/Irish however great grandpa William was married to Sarah Manspile, who was of german descent partially. Would like to hear from you.

My geneology is a work in progress but I have quite a bit. All of my family comes from Botetourt, Rockbridge, Allegheny County area. My dad is John William (age 92). His dad was Ollie Alexander Broughman and my great grandfather was William Broughman who was married to Sarah Manspile. My mothers surname was Vass. Other connected family names are Switzer, Dolman, Van Buren, Craft, Kelley, Callahan, Armentrout, Painter, Thompson, and more. Have to go. Willwrite more later. Do you have a genealogy on the Broughman family that you could share? Samuel Broughman was my Great Grandfather and Samuel Henry was my grandfather. Samuel Henry lived in Clifton Forge, Va.

Solomon was in Botetourt Co. , Va. in 1850 census.He was 46 at that time. Wife, Margaret(Peggy) Deal was 40. His brother(or Cousin?) was Jacob Broughman was also in Botetourt Co. for 1850 census. Jacob's wife was Christina(Tena) Deal. She was Margaret's sister(or Cousin).Age 49.Sorry that i don't have a burial place. Try Botetourt Co. cemetarys. I have info on lots of other Broughmans in area and other related family names.

Dee I want to thank you again for the photos. With them I have been able to answer at least one question. Who was the Willie that got murdered...well he was my great grandfathers brother. He was son of John William Lyle Broughman Jr and Sally Broughman. I still havn't found any newspaper articles on the murder but I haven't given up yet. There has to be something somewhere. I have pined down the date to 1909.

(Murl and Kenneth were twin brothers)
William Leo. July 14 1896, Ne
Verda or Veda F. May 1898, Ne
In 1900 there were two nephews living with this family in Foster, Nebraska, they were:
Edward Cox, born 1871 in Indiana
Oscar G. Cox, born Jan 1880 in Indiana

Murl married a lady named Sophia, but had a child by another woman, named Doris Brougham, born 1921 in Yankton, S.Dakota. Murl died in 1922

Kenneth, Murl's twin brother married Nelsena Nelson 29 Apr. 1922 in Yankton S. Dakota

George Franklin Brougham, married Serena Brodwell 1919 in Yankton, S Dakota

Nelsena Nelson and Serena Brodwell were cousins. Nelsena and Kenneth later divorced, somewhere about 1933-1935.

I would like to be able to connect this family to its Roots in Virginia.

Hi I don't know if we have the same line or not but here goes. I have a photo from my greatgrandmothers album (she was Martha Elizabeth Hendricks Broughman) It says Julie Broughman's daughter Bertha and another photo says Bertha Craft and Mae?? Any of this matching? The photos look like they could have been taken in the 1800s exact time I can't tell.

Looking for information on or decendents of Willie Broughman. Willie's father was John Broughman . Willie served at some point in the navy. Willie died when he was 22 years old having his throat cut in a coal mining district in WV. Sorry there isnt more information as Im working from a picture of Willie...Thanks for your time....Dee

Fannie Fout married William Broughman...Does anyone know where the two of them are buried?

Fannie Fout's mother (Harriet <Mayo> Fout) lived with her, according to the CSA rolls of Philip Fout...I am also trying to find out where Harriet is buried.

Philip is Fannies father, he is buried at Solitude cemetary, but we cant find a headstone for Harriet, and wonder if maybe Harriet isnt buried with Fannie and William.

inscription "Wife Of Samuel Broughman At Rest"

On right: (smaller stone raised inscription badly worn)
S*.B. Broughman Died S*ept (?) Age 78 Years
*'s' reversed like in a mirror or a letter 5.

I have recently visited Bethel Cemetery, Botetourt County, VA, located off of state route 696, between us Hwy 220 and Locust Bottom. This is a small cemetery out in the country. One Tombstone inscribed across the top "BROUGHMAN" for four people, reading from left to right, were:
Wilson H. Broughman b.05-09-1902 d.10-11-1984
Theresa C. Broughman b.02-28-1908 d.05-09-1995
(BLANK)
Irmgard S. Broughman b.02-27-1927 d.04-17-1968

Samuel Broughman was my great grandfather. I show him being born in 1845 at Lick Run, Botetourt County, VA. He was married to Frances Kelly, who was born 18 Dec 1850.
Samuel was the father of my grandmother Ida Frances Broughman Brown. Samuel died 1 Sep 1923. His wife Frances died 9 Feb 1942. Samuel was in the Civil War and was captured and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland. he was later exchanged and returned home to Virginia. He had 12 children. I believe his parents to be Solomon and Margaret.

Frances' mother may have been a Ann Kitty Simpson.

My grandmother, Shirley Broughman Lodge is looking for the grave of her father, Ryan Hart or Rinehart Broughman. He may have been born in West Virginia in the 1890's, but later moved to Botetourt County, Va. He married Cottie Smith from Botetourt Co., VA. Can anyone help me? Our Broughman's came from Germany to Preble County, Ohio and Darke County, Ohio. They spoke German part of the time and prayed the Lord's Prayer at the dinner table in German.

I'm looking for some info and relatives of "Fannie" Fout Broughman from Botetourt Co. Va. (Her real name could have been Josephine) She was born around 1880. Her parents were Philip A. Fout and Harriet Ann Mayo Fout. Her siblings were Wm. E. Fout, Walter Lee Fout, Charles A. Fout, John Philip Fout, Annie Fout, and Sarah Fout. I'm not sure of her husbands name other than Broughman, or if they had any children. Any help would be appreciated.

I have just come across your site on ancestry.co.uk and I am so excited. Alice Broughman is also my G G Grandmother, my maternal Grandmother is Gladys Pickering (Ivys youngest sister). My mother didn't even know her grandfathers name as William died just 1 month before Gladys was born and of course, the youngest girls all ended up in an orphanage after Alice died so they didn't have much to tell. I haven't looked into Alice Broughman yet but was wondering if you managed to get any of her certificates at all. If you didn't I may be able to try and get one from the General Records Office.

We must be 2nd cousins?? I am fairly new to the family history game.

I'm looking for any information that can be found about a James Broughman who married Ada Watts. This is my great-grandfather. All I know is that they had two sons and a daugher...one son being James Edward Broughman (my grandfather), Calvin and May.
