My sourses for lineage of Samual Shelton Broughton are mostly from Google Book searches (www.books.google.com). Some full, some paratial, and some snippet previews. The results are as follows:

From "Alumni Oxonienses: The members of the University of Oxford 1500-1714" it states that Sampson Shelton Broughton is from Longdon, Staffordshire.

From "Supreme Court of Judicature of the Province of New York, 1691-1704: Volume 80" snippet previews:
"...sphere of the law and legal institutions. His father, Richard Broughton, was an honored member of the bar of London and a master of the Utter Bar of Middle Temple, to which he had been called in 1645. Sampson Shelton matriculated Oriel College, Oxford University, on 18 March 1670, then being 18 years of age and was admitted to Middle Temple...His first cousin, Christopher Broughton, and his second cousin, Richard Broughton, had also attended Middle Temple."

From "Register of Admissions to the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, from the Fifteenth Century to the year 1944: Volume 1" snippet preview.
"Richard Broughton, of Clemments Inn, second son of Edward Broughton of Longdon, Staffordshire, dec'd, called 6 Feb 1645-46."

The book searches resulted in a lot of info (birth, death, marriage, arrival in New York, etc.) on Sampson Shelton Broughton. It appears that the Stafford Broughtons were also lawyers and early settlers in the colonies.

I made a mistake in my previous post by implying that Christopher Broughton was a brother to Richard Broughton, 2nd son of Edward Broughton. The records on Christopher Broughton do state that he is the heir of Edward Broughton. But dates, ages and the preview that stated Christopher Broughton was a 1st cousin of Sampson Shelton Broughton seems to indicate that Richard Broughton's older brother and heir of Edward Broughton was also an Edward Broughton. This neeeds further research.
Yeah, written communications sometimes leave a thing or two to be desired, but no problem.

You did give me a bit of info I didn't have on Thomas and Ellen de Inglethorpe. I didn't have where Thomas was from and the info I had on Ellen said she was born in Suffolk, so you just gave me a new lead to follow on them since they were as far back as I we have on that line.

The Jernegans have undergone a lot of variations in the spelling of their name and even those from the same family line and living in the same area in Mississippi don't all spell it the same way, but the Jerninghams of Costessey Hall (Norfolk) and Somerleyton (Suffolk) are our direct line. One of my paternal great-great grandmothers was a Jernegan. Baron Henry Jerningham of Costessy Hall was her 5x-great-grandfather and the last of our line to have an English title, as we are descended from his son Thomas who came to America.

Anyway, having that info from the UK Natioinal Archives on Sir Thomas de Inglethorpe being from Norfolk was helpful. Thanks. Although I have father/son cousins who have been seriously researching the Jernegan line for decades now and meticulously validating info, we still don't have a lot of info on the lines like de Inglethorpe that married into the Jernegan line and, therefore, also became part of our direct ancestory. I keep digging trying to fill in the gaps.

Again, thanks!

Debbie

Thanks for this will. Very useful.

I have some questions about various Richard Broughtons. Perhaps someone has an answer!

Can I assume that this Richard Broughton [~1566-~1732/1635?] was the son of Mark [Marcus] Broughton of Seaton [d1592]. Both are described as lawyers in a 2002 post by "sbroug".

According to this will, Richard [d. 1635] was the father of among others, Ambrose, Andrew, and another Richard. Ambrose inherited the land, Andrew seems too have been a strong Puritan and "regicide" [1602/3-1687].

What happened to the second Richard? Was he the same man as the Richard Broughton who was a master of Utter Bar in the Middle Temple, who married widow Isabel Shelton in London in 1649? This Richard and Isabel were the parents of Sampson Shelton Broughton, who emigrated to New York in the 1690s.

Thanks,

John Brooke

Hi there, it's always difficult to make comments in these boards; in fact mine was not directed at you, sorry. One branch of the Ros/Roos family took their name from property they owned in Ingmanthorpe in Yorkshire.

Records in the UK National Archives suggest that Sir Thomas de Inglethorpe, father of Ellen, was from Norfolk - his descendants being mentioned there in 1320. The Jernegan's were also mentioned as from Norfolk.

I wasn't trying to make our John be anyone in particular's son. I was only sharing info to see if he may have been related to that branch of the family in general whether grandson, nephew, cousin, whatever. I'm just trying to find which branch of the family our line came from.

You mentioned Ingmanthorpe. Is that a different family or just a different spelling for Inglethorpe? Sir Thomas Inglethorpe was my 22x great-grandfather. I'm descended from his daughter Ellen who married Sir Hugh Jeregan. Ingmanthorpe and Inglethorpe may not even be the same family though.

I'm also descended from the Ros/de Ros family. Baron Thomas de Ros and wife Beatrice Stafford de Ros were my 19x great-grandparents. I'm descended from their son Baron William de Ros and wife Margaret Fitz Alan.

The Broughton and Inglethorpe families are on my dad's side and the de Ros family is on my mother's side. I'm trying to trace each line as far back as I can. Some are easier to trace than others and some of the lines have been researched, documented and written about already which makes it easier. But there are some that just seem to be a deadend and our Broughton roots may remain one of those.

Debbie

There is little doubt that Thomas Broughton was born in Broughton Hall in Longden, Staffordshire and went on to build his new family home; a new Broughton Hall in Ecclesall Staffordshire. His wife was also Mary Roos - descended incidentally from the Lords Ros / Roos of Helmsley, Ingmanthorpe and their ilk (the premier Lords of Britain).

However, for your John Broughton to have been their child would mean that he was born when his mother was aged 70 and five years after his father died.

I do not yet have any answers to the questions that will probably follow this post but my book, 'The Broughton Cartulary' when it is finally complete may have some. It is however many months away from being published.

No, my john didn't have a son named William.
"Early Puritan Settlers of Conn." by Hinman, 1852, pg. 351
Hannah Bascom was age 15 at the time of her marriage to john-1 Broughton, which would put her date of birth about ca. 1635. 1650 Windsor, Connecticut records list John-1 as a planter and land speculator, and that he bought from Simon Mills, his house, out-house, orchard with lo-lot, and adjoining swamp at the west end, also 5 3/4 acres, also 1o acre in the woods, also 4 acres by the mill brook, and 20 acres by the same brook. John-1 sold a 5 acre lot to Samuel Marshall. John-1 and his father-in-law, Thomas Bascom, moved to Northampton, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts., in 1654, or there about, and lived for a time on adjoining lots on Pudding Lane, now known as Hawley Street.
Stiles "Ancient Windsor", pg. 152
"Jo. Browton, 1650, married that year (m. 15 Nov 1650) , bought Simon Mills house and lot next, south of Wlliam Phelps Jr., which he sold 5 Feb 1653 to Samuel Marshall and disappears from records. (In a record of the first settlers and their home lots)

Hotten "The Original List.....who went from Great Britian to American Plantations", 1600-1700
"John Browton, age 20, appears in an August, 1635 list "their under written names are to be transported to Virgines, embarked in the Thomas, Henry Taverner, master, have been examined by the minister of Gravesend touching their conformities to our religion, etc." (Virginea was at that time a generic word designating the New World)

That might be our John. The birthdate is within 5 years of what we had and the arrival in America is the same year. We didn't have the name of our John's wife, but we had her born about 1610. Do you know if your John and Hannah had a son named William born either in England or Virginia?

This is pretty much all the other details we have about our John and William:

WILLIAM BRUTON was likely the son of immigrant ancestor JOHN BRUTON b abt 1600-1610 England, who immigrated as headright for JOHN SEWARD Sr, coming to Isle of Wight Co VA in 1635, and was a tenant farmer/planter, indentured to John Holmswood/Holmwood in Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA by 1652. Wife unknown. JOHN SEWARD Sr was the great grandfather of MARY SEWARD who married JAMES BRUTON in about 1680, Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA.

This branch of the Broughtons came into a good bit of land through the marriage of Mary Seward into the family. Her uncle RObert Caulfield (her mother's brother) left her sizeable property in his will and since she married James Bruton and the property became part of the Bruton estate.

Does any of this match up in any way with your Broughtons?

I'm not sure who the Andrew is that you mention as marrying Mary RAVAUD, As I show that she was married to Samson, son of Sampson Shelton. Sampson succeeded his father as attorney general, and was commissioned a naval officer on May 16th, 1711. He was granted licenses to marry Mary Ravaud, December 24, 1705, and received grants of land in Dutchess Co., New York, USA.

Abstracts of Wills Vol II 1708-1728
From The New York Historical Society Collections, this 1893 volume features abstracts of wills on file in the Surrogates Office, City of New York, from 1708 to 1728.
Page 326.--SAMSON BROUGHTON. In the name of God, Amen, the 30 November, 1707. I, Samson Broughton, Esq., of New York, being in perfect health. I leave all my estate to my wife Mary, during her life, and then to my next of kin.
Witnesses, John Riggs, Heligonda De Kay, Joseph Huddlestone.
I have generations of direct Howard ancestors through my 13x-great-grandmother Margaret Howard who married Sir John Wyndham of Crownthorpe and Felbrigg. My paternal grandmother was a Windham directly descended from them.

I know I have seen the Bagot name in my research, possibly married into the family in some way. It may be that your Frances Howard Bagot is connected to my Howard line in some way.

The Stafford line is married into my tree but I'm not a direct descendant of theirs. I just saw Howard, Stafford and other names I recognized in the Broughton family trees I had come across and that's why I began to think I must be on the right trail, but I may never make the actual connection since you say there is so little mention of any Broughton's having come to America. They're here as Brewtons and Brutons. That's one thing that makes genealogy research challenging, the fact that many surnames were changed to phonetic spellings or written differently on immigration documents if the person doing the paperwork did spelled the name incorrectly. But sometimes they were changed long before coming to America. I have found that McCoy was originally MacKay, Gambrell use to be Gumbrell, etc. and those aren't leaps I would have naturally thought were the same families. I've learned, however, not to assume that the name a family has used for generations is the correct original spelling. But Bruton is the only one I've found so far that has undergone at least two changes from Broughton to Brewton to Bruton. It takes a breakthrough like that to fill in the gaps.

Interesting about Thomas Broughton governor of SC. I wasn't aware of that. My Brutons settled in Virginia The Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg Virginia was named for the family. The ancestoral family matriarch of my dad's family is Barbara Bruton Gambrell b. 1755. All American Gambrell ancestory traces back to her and her husband John Newton Gambrell I. That's one reason for my particular interest in finding where the Bruton came to America from, because she was our American "founding mother". Anyway, the Gambrells had mirgrated generations earlier from Virginia to South Carolina and that's where Barbara Bruton moved to to make her life with John Newton Gambrell and all the original Gambrells descended from them lived their lives in South Carolina. Barbara's parents who would have been contemporary with Gov. Thomas Broughton lived in Virginia at the time of his governorship. Still, most settlers to America landed in Virginia and spread out from there so there is a very good probability that Gov. Broughton was connected to the Virginia Brutons.

As for Francis Broughton in Virginia where our John Broughton was can't be coincidence. Our John was there in 1635 and was still there in 1652, but I don't know when he actually arrived. Broughton is not that common a name in the USA anyway, so for both Thomas and Francis to have both been settled in Virginia "indicates" a family tie. The only other info I have on our John was that he was a planter, which is how they referred to large landowners usually with plantations. I don't know where the Thomas Broughton you mentioned was in Virginia, but our John was in Surry County, Lawnes Creek Parish. Records indicate he was a tobacco planter and in 1659 had 200 acres in Lawnes Creek Parish.

You've given me some good information to work with that I might never have discovered otherwise. You are so kind to have taken the time to put all that together for me. Thank you so much!

Debbie

Hi there, my interest is are Broughtons of Eccleshall, Staffordshire and my claimed ancestor Thomas (1590-1648).

By considering the coats of arms allowed by various Herlads, there is some evidence to claim that the Broughton's of Satffordshire and Lancashire are descended from Robert of Broughton Tower, brother to Sir Thomas who was killed at the Battle of Stoke in 1487. It is also claimed that this Robert was ancestor of some of the Broughton's of Staffordshire; those of Stukley and Godmanchester in Huntingdonshire and Mark Broughton of Seaton in Rutland. The latter, it is claimed, was an ancestor or close relative of Thomas Broughton who was Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina from 1730-1737.

What you should be wary of though are any claims of link to Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire; to Broughton of Marchwiel or those of Lower Broughton, Shropshire (the latter claimed Welsh descent.

There is a Herald's Visitation for Broughton of Whittington, Staffordshire that shows a Francis Broughton 'in Virginia' in 1664. Other than those two, I have yet to find other claims of Broughton's who went to America that early - that does not of mean that other researchers have not found more.
You mention the Howards in you tree - they too appear in mine (not published here) but through the marriage of Richard Bagot to Frances Howard in the early 1700s.

Not sure if this is of any help.
Broughton - Brewton - Bruton

In researching my direct ancestor John Bruton, I've learned that our branch first used the spelling Brewton but later it evolved to Bruton. I have only recently learned that neither was the origanal spelling - thatit was Broughton.

In researching the Broughton family, I found that there are several families in the line of the Broughtons of Lancashire that are also in our overall family tree. My experience has been that families from those generations often married into the same families more than once. So I feel like I'm on the right track as we have the Staffords, Howards and others in our family tree as do the Broughton trees I'm seeing online.

Our John was born in England c. 1600-1610 and came to American in 1635. That is ALL the pre-America background we have on him. We don't even know his wife's name, only that she was born c. 1610 in England. This John was my 10x-great-grandfather.

If you have even a clue where he might fit into the larger Broughton family, any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Broughton - Brewton - Bruton

In researching my ancestor John Bruton, I discovered that our early American branch used the spelling Brewton. I only recently discovered that prior to America, it had actually been Broughton. Our John was born c. 1600-1610 in England. That's ALL we know about his pre-American history. However, in researching Broughtons, I discovered that the family from Lancashire has marriages with several families also in our family tree, so feel I'm on the right track since it has been my experience that many of these families are connected sometimes more than once in our family tree. I am a deadend though. I see that John Broughton is a very common name in the family, which is also typical of those generations - to use the same names among the males in particular, repeatedly. If anyone has information that would like a John with data that matches ours to a family in England, I would greatly appreciate the info. Thanks!

Hello

This is a long shot, but I'm putting what I know out there just in case anyone knows anything at all about the above individual.

John BROUGHTON was, according to the record of his marriage to Mary WELLS in Cosgrove, Northamptonshire, in 1710, from the village or parish of Chicheley in Buckinghamshire. Unfortunately, this is where the trail grows cold: there are very few surviving parish records for Chicheley or the surrounding parishes, let alone records of any Broughtons.

I was wondering, has anybody seen the Bishop's Transcripts, wills, etc, that might mention this particular John? I really have no idea how to proceed, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Martin

Stephanie,
I am descended from the Broughton family also (probably a different family but also with the story of American Indian Ancestry)
In my opinion, the best way to begin to search for any heritage within your family, including American Indian, is to use conventional methods to trace back your ancestors that are said to be, or connected to those said to be, American Indian. First follow the branch of the family, containing the individual in question, through the census records. The census provides a lot of information including "race", relationships, ages and location of residence. With this information completed then look for any birth, marriage or death records for the people you are interested in in the locations where they were born, married or deceased. Once you have gathered this information, you will not only know much more about this part of your family but you will likely have the answer you are looking for or be very close to finding it out.
Need any help, let me know.

Desperately seeking details of THOMAS BROUGHTON, Gentleman/Farmer, of Leicester married to MARY THORSBY, parents of GEORGE BROUGHTON born 1843 in Leicester, UK.
George came to Australia as a military man and settled here, marrying twice, but I can't find any record of his parents back in England. He married Mary BUCHANAN in South Melbourne in 1884.

Afraid not. Joseph (1782-Skipton) is as far back as I have gone with this particular BROUGTHON line. One of his 3 children was born and subsequently moved to Salford:
William b:1817, Salford, d: 4 Apr 1887, Eccles
Thomas b:1820, Skipton
John b:1830, Skipton
Thanks for your message. The only Joseph Broughton I have was born in Skipton 19 Jun 1814. He was the son of William Broughton (1780-1857) & Ann Whitaker (1777-1851).

Can you provide parentage info on your Joseph & wife Elizabeth?
