The Filles du Roi

The filles du roi, or King's Daughters, were some 770 women who arrived in the colony of New France (Canada) between 1663 and 1673, under the financial sponsorship of King Louis XIV of France. Most were single French women and many were orphans. Their transportation to Canada and settlement in the colony were paid for by the King. Some were given a royal gift of a dowry of 50 livres for their marriage to one of the many unmarried male colonists in Canada. These gifts are reflected in some of the marriage contracts entered into by the filles du roi at the time of their first marriages.

The filles du roi were part of King Louis XIV's program to promote the settlement of his colony in Canada. Some 737 of these women married and the resultant population explosion gave rise to the success of the colony. Most of the millions of people of French Canadian descent today, both in Quebec and the rest of Canada and the USA (and beyond!), are descendants of one or more of these courageous women of the 17th century.

I'm looking for anyone related to a Jeannette Marie Brouillette

She is my grandmother (deceased) who lived in Minneapolis and moved to Chicago, during the Depression. she later settled in s. florida where her other daughters lived.

Jeanette's background was French Canadian (her father, I assume) and Norwegian (her mother). She had a sister named Mary, whose whereabouts I have no idea. When they were young I think her mother died because her dad (my great grandfather Brouillette) remarried. I think her mother (my great-grandmother) died during childbirth.

My mother (Jeanette's eldest daughter) was one of 4 children who group up in a Chicagoan suburb. My grandfather, Carl, came to America (Minnesota, where I believe they met) from Skane, Sweden, to avoid the draft in Sweden at age 18 and then got drafted in to WWI. Her served and was honorably discharged. He was 18 and named Carl Johansson. He later changed his last name to Johnson. Jeanette took his last name when they married, and was 16 years his junior (she 16, he 32). I don't have the years yet, but my mother is 80 (2008) if that helps. I will send more info later (& pictures).

Thank you.

Christin

Thanks for your comment on Filles du Roi. I was not familiar with that term and after a short Google search learned quite a bit about our ancestor's history. There are several websites about them; one that was helpful to me was http://www.fillesduroi.org/. It gives info also on the Carignan-Salières Regiment. I discovered that not only my wife's grandmother (Brouillette) came from ancestors in the regiment & filles du roi, but also her grandfather Lebeau's line also did (Jean-Bte Bau dit Lalouette married Etienne Loret).
My wife is related to Michel Brouillet-Marie Dubois. Her Grandmother was Dorilda Brouillette from Benton County Indiana area. Michel would be my wife's 8th Great-Grandfather. We have a bit of info from a Brouillette Reunion we attended about 20 years ago. Michel was apparently a French soldier posted to Quebec around 1665. I'll look through my files in the next couple of days and see what I can provide.
Here's a start:
Jacques Brouillet (Michel's father/mother)
Renee Vaiziennes
-Michel Brouillet 1645-1712
-Marie Dubois 1644-1734
--Gilles Brouillet 1674-1746
--Marie Bricault
---Joseph Brouillet 1707-1766
---Agathe Mersan
----Jean-Baptiste Brouillette 1734-1808
----Marie-Anne Galipeau (also married to Marie Mersan?)
-----Jean-Baptiste Brouillette 1766-1843
-----Josette Gauthier
------Jean-Baptiste Brouillette 1792-????
------Charlotte Drogue
-------Antoine Brouillette 1827-1891
-------Melanise Fournier 1829-1911
--------Joseph Euclid Hypolite Brouillette 1866-1956
--------Florence Cyr 1870-1956
---------Dorilda Brouillette 1892-1965 (my wife's GM)
All the above was given to us and I have not verified the info beyond Antoine Brouillette. I have some names of a few other Brouillette researchers also that I'll pass along. Jim
