Spencer Brown, born in about 1789 near Savannah, Georgia, was the grandson of an Englishman, who had immigrated in 1732, and an Indian mother. After Spencer's mother and father died, Spencer having no brothers and sisters was "bound out".
Nancy Welch, born in about 1790 in South Carolina, was the daughter of a German father and a Creek Nation Indian (Yamacraw Tribe) mother.
Spencer and Nancy were married in North Carolina. In about 1814, they migrated by horse pack train, with their two children (John Riley and Charity), to the Big Spring Creek area of Hickman County, Tennessee. They were among the first white families to settle in this area before the Indian Treaty of 1818. After staking his claim, he road horseback to Knoxville, the capital of Tennessee, to receive his land grant.
Spencer died on October 19, 1868 and Nancy died on September 19, 1860. They are buried in an unmarked grave in the Brown Cemetery on Blue Hollow Road in Hickman County, Tennessee.
They had 10 children. Spencer is my gg grandfather.
