Karen, I ran across your Stengel family in Amelia County Virginia while searching for descendants of a cousin, Melville Bolling Bland who married Charles J. Stengel. Charles was the older brother of your Barbara Stengel, both of whom were born in Michigan and married their respective spouses in Amelia County. Charles' and Barbara's parents are listed in several censuses as John J. Stengel and Rosa Stengel, both of whom are buried in the Amelia Cemetery, Amelia Court House, Virginia. They are listed as born in Germany--which would have encompassed Bavaria in census-speak. Melville and her daughter, Dora (who never married) are buried there too. There were other siblings of Charles and Barbara, including August and John Jr., who continued to live in Amelia for many years.
