Broyles Mystery - HELP!

Hello everyone. I need help with a family tree mystery. I have a William Mason b. abt 1802 in Greene Co, TN. He married a lady named Anna, I have recvd info from some other researchers that she is a Broyles, and dismissed it as I had no indications that this was true and no one could provide it. BUT then I got some old TN Census info that not only indicates she may have been a Broyles, but adds to the mystery. The 1860 Census shows William (age 60) and Anna (age 65) Mason, with their children, Susan 28, Eli 27, Elisha(s/b Elihu)and Martha Broyles 44, James Broyles 21, and Vance Broyles 18. In 1850 James and Vance Broyles lived with them but not Martha. 1870 Martha still with them and James too. In later Census Vance is David "Vance" Mason. No longer using the Broyles name. His children and grandchildren have been Masons.
I'm hoping someone with Broyles history experience will be able to give me a clue about Martha, James, Vance and their connection To Anna()Mason. Any guidance appreciated. Heather

The BROYLES/BRIEL line is connected to my husband's GAUNT/CORBIN line in Culpeper Co., VA through various marriages.

I recently discovered Thomas Jefferson BROYLES and Robert Washington BROYLES listed in San Saba County History 1856 - 2001. This info showed them being in the C.S.A. from Alabama and being connected to San Saba County, TX (didn't say how).

Is this Thomas Jefferson BROYLES the same person as Thomas Jefferson (1818 - 1899) s/o Cornelius BROYLES and Mary FARLEY poss born in White Co., TN?

I discovered a Sherry REAVIS m Paul BROYLES in TX. REAVIS is a family connection to my mother's LOCKER line in San Saba Co., TX.

Does anyone have information that would connect Thomas Jefferson or Robert Washington BROYLES to the REAVIS family of San Saba Co., TX?

I have an Artilitha (sometimes seen spelled as Artimesa) Broyles who married John M. Reeves on 19 May 1831 in Greene Co., Tennessee. Others females later in the family were refered to as "Arti" so I suspect she may have gone by that nickname as well.

She came to live (1850 census) with her husband in Russellville, Jefferson Co., TN. and after his death was found (1860) with her children in Rogersville, Hawkins Co., TN.

Anyone have any idea what Broyles bunch in East Tennessee (or thereabouts) she connected to?

The following is excerpted from Arthur Leslie Keith's study of the Broyles family. Have you checked Tennessee records, particularly Greeneville, Green County?

CAIN BROYLES (150) [son of Aaron Broyles (31) and Frances Reed] According to his tombstone in the Shady Grove Baptist Cemetery, Anderson Co., SC, he
was born at Calhoun, SC Jan 12, 1788 and died Apr 24, 1864. He went from South Carolina to Greeneville, TN., about 1832 and became an attorney. It is claimed
that he died in the house in which he was born while on a visit to South Carolina. The date of his birth indicates that his father had moved to South Carolina before
1788. Cain Broyles, like his father, was usually referred to as "Major", probably a title of courtesy rather than in any recognition of military service. He married
Lucinda Nash (b. Aug 10, 1790;d. Oct 9, 1868), the daughter of Col. Nash after which Nashville, TN. is named. {SLB} Keith is in error with this statement of the
parentage of Lucinda Nash since Frances Nash, after whom Nashville, TN is named, died in 1777 at the Battle of Germantown in PA and had two daughters only,
neither of which was Lucinda.

I started looking in East Tennessee for Christopher Wheeler whose daughter Antoinette married Lola Orlando Strain son of William S. Strain and Cinthia Malinda Broyles, dau of Isaac and help, help, I am embroyled in Broyles. I am so confused my head is spinning. I went on the excellent Germanna website and it is clear that many of you have been at this for some time and are well versed. I got confused at Isaac's father Adam. Some people have him as being born in Randolph, NC and others in Virginia. There also appear to be two Rosannahs or Rosinas, his wife, and she is apparently a Broyles as well! It MIGHT BE! My John Jeremiah was born 1775, so he could have been christened in 1781, after they arrived here? I don't have the extended version of Ancestry w/ other countries, is that where you found it?
John Jeremiah born June 16, 1775 married Elizbeth Souther born May 31, 1783 married Sept 18, 1806.
IT looks as though the family lived near Culpepper Va and then moved on the Oldham, Jeffersontown KY.

My grandfather's name was Arthur Norman Broyles but he was born February 18, 1902 and passed away in January 1960. He was born in Cherokee, Oklahoma on an Indian reservation. Not sure if he is the same but sounds pretty close. He was married to Agnes Broyles (nee: Hausner) and they had 6 children.

He married a Mary whom I no longer regard as the probable daughter of Tobias Wilhoit whose will (Sept. 1, 1761) mentions daughter Mary Broil. I shall show later that this Mary Broile was the wife of Cyrus Broyles. Adam Broyles's name appears frequently in the land records of Culpeper Co. as he was apparently a large landowner. On Aug. 6, 1754, Adam Broyl bought 150 acres of George Moyer (which may mark the approximate time of his marriage) which with wife Mary he sold to Nicholas Broyl on June 17, 1756. On Aug. 19, 1762, Adam Broil and wife Mary sold to John Wayland 64 acres on White Oak Run. He signs name and she makes mark. On Nov 18, 1771, Mary Catherine Broile (the widow of Jacob Broyles (2), Adam Broile (probably in his capacity as executor of his father's will), Matthias Broile and Eva Broile (his wife), sold to John Glassell 156 acres on the Robinson River. Adam and Matthias sign names but Mary Catherine and Eva make marks (it is strange that Eva would make her mark as she was the daughter of the Rev. George Samuel Klug - would he not teach his daughter to write?). Although the number of acres is given as 166, this evidently was the tract of 156 acres which Jacob Broil had willed to his son Matthias. On Jan.21, 1772, Adam Broils
bought 1340 acres of James Barbour, Jr., for 504 £ sterling and 4 schillings. On the same day, Adam Broile and his wife Mary sold 283 acres lying on Robinson Fork to John Yager; on the same day, they sold to Michael Broil 116 acres; on Mar. 15, 1772, they sold 139 acres to Connard (Conrad?) Willhoite; on Feb.15, 1773, they sold 235 acres to Matthias Broile; on May 18, 1773, they sold 290 acres to Robert Fleshman. By these transfers, Adam Broyles retained only 81 acres of the 1340 acres which he bought of James Barbour. On June 5, 1780, Adam Broyle and wife Mary sold 200 acres to Thomas Porter for 1000 £s. This date probably marks his departure to East Tennessee. Though in 1776 he was one of the trustees of Hebron Church, his name rarely appears in the Birth Register. He was sponsor at the baptism of Solomon Breil, son of Peter Breil, who was born July 7, 1772. It is curious that of Adam's seven children, the
birth of but one is recorded in the register. In 1780 Adam Broyles entered 1500 acres in Jefferson Co., Ky., on Rockcastle River, and another tract of 1500 acres on the Licking River. The first tract was surveyed for Adam Broyle May 21, 1781, on the waters of the Rockcastle about three fourths of a mile above trace to Boonesborough. Though he seems to have intended to go to Kentucky, he probably never did but instead, about this time, he went to East Tenn. to what is now Washington Co. The first and only record of Adam
Broyles found in Tenn. records is his will and proceedings relative to settlement of his estate. This will (See Appendix) shows that he had resided in Washington Co. long enough to have acquired land. Dated Apr. 19, 1782 and witnessed by John Waddell, Conrad Willhight, and Matthias Broyles, the will was probated in May, 1782 with Joseph Brown, Moses Broyles, and William Moore named as executors.
No wife is mentioned thus it can be inferred that she died between June 5, 1780 (when she joined in deed in Va.) and Apr. 19, 1782, the date of the will. To the oldest son, Moses, was left 200 acres from the land the testator had purchased from Joseph Ballard on the south side of the Little Limestone Creek. To sons Aaron and Joshua, he left the land on which he was living at his death, an exact amount not being stated but evidently the same as that mentioned in the deed of January 3, 1784 [Washington Co., Tenn.] whereby Samuel Sherrill sold to Aaron and Joshua Broils, sons and heirs of Adam Broiles, dec'd, 312 acres on the north side of the Nollichuckie River at the corner of John Waddle which land had been paid for by Adam Broils, dec'd in the amount of 400 pounds). To daughter Milla Parther, he left 200 acres which he had bought of George Doherty. No record of these purchases by Adam Broyles appears in the Washington Co. records. Testator mentions land in Kentucky of which nothing more is heard of in later years. He also mentions daughters Mima Broyles, Mary Broyles, and Anne Brown. He directs that the family live on the plantation while unmarried and that the residue of the estate be equally divided in 1790 at the discretion of the executors. Adam's inventory was returned in 1782 by William Moore, executor. Among the various items were 32 head of cattle, 4 horse creators, 48 hogs, 14 negroes, and one silver watch. Bonds due to him and paper money amount to more than 1982 £s. If the personal property described above and the value of his land is added to this, it would appear that he had been unusually prosperous, in fact, the most prosperous of Jacob's Broyles's nine sons. His remains undoubtedly lie on the banks of the Nolachucky River in present Washington Co., Tenn. It is not known whether his wife died in Va. just before his departure for Tenn.;
her family name is not known and probably never will be. The marriage of his daughters Milla and Anne to men named Parther (Prather) and Brown probably occurred in Tenn. in the years 1780-82 since these families did not seem to have lived in Madison Co., Va.

The present writer published articles on the German Colony of 1717 in The William and Mary Quarterly, issues October, 1917, and January and April, 1918. He there attempts to reconstruct this colony of 20 families whose names had come down variously through different lines of tradition. He is more convinced than ever that his reconstruction is correct. It is based chiefly upon the grounds that the 18 persons being sued by Col Spotswood in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, July 7, 1724, for the nonpayment of their transportation, were being sued for violation of the same contract, namely, the one of 1717. The name of John Bryol is
found among the 18 defendants. It is true that in the importation papers of John Bryoll and Jacob Bryoll, dated May 2, 1727, it is stated that they came to this country "about nine years since with Captain Scott". "About nine years since" counted back from May 2, 1727, could easily carry us to the latter part of 1717, yet these papers have been used by some to prove that John Bryoll could not have belonged to the 1717 colony.

DETAINED IN ENGLAND - PASSAGE TO AMERICA ON SAILING VESSEL WITH CAPTAIN SCOTT

The reference to Captain Scott may have some significance. He seems to have been so well known that the association with him may be used to date their emigration, and he is almost certainly identical with the captain who had been responsible for their harrowing experiences. This captain had contracted to carry the colonists to America but the ship on which they had secured passage was detained while their captain was being held in prison in London for debt. Evidently, by this period of detention, they had exhausted their stock of provisions and had to make outlay for which they were not prepared. The captain was finally released and the voyage continued, but being deprived of the necessities of life, many of them died during the passage. They had intended to go to Pennsylvania but instead were landed in Virginia, either driven by adverse storms or through the deliberate intent of the captain. The captain, claiming that the Germans had failed to pay the transportation costs, sold them as indentured servants to Governor Spotswood through an agreement which they later claimed not to have understood. (N.B.: When combined with the colonial records, the more appropriate statement is that the ship was the Scott whose captain was Andrew Tarbett. The cause of their landing in Virginia and not in Pennsylvania (which is where they wanted to go) can very reasonably be stated as a case of highjacking or kidnapping by Tarbett. John Blankenbaker, Germanna History Notes, 2001). Governor Spotswood settled
them at Germanna along with the 1714 colony, about 20 miles from Fredericksberg and apparently precisely on the land which was to be 150 years later the battlefield of the Wilderness. The following years are described as a period of great deprivation.

In 1724 they sought relief from their bondage but were retained by Col. Spotswood (now no longer governor) by the suit referred to above for another year. Thus did they exchange the tyranny of the old world for the tyranny in the new land of liberty! Their release came in 1725 at which time they removed in a body about 30 miles almost due west to the Robinson River valley in present Madison County but then still in Spotsylvania County. Their eight years of bondage seem to have been burnt into their very souls and there are many later references to it; the latest of these is found in a petition (apparently belonging to 1776)
published in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol XVIII, 268,; a part of this petition follows:

"Sheweth that our fathers, who lived under an arbitrary prince in Germany, and the Germans being particularly invited by the hon'ble William Penn, Senr., Esqr, Proprietor of the Province of Pennsylvania, to settle in his province................our fathers now ventured their lives and fortunes to come into a land of Liberty ................... They journeyed to London & there agreed with a captain to land them and their families in Pennsylvania but he prov'd false and landed them against their will and agreement in Virginia and sold them for servants. On our arrival, the loss of their Estates and the snare the Captain had draw'd them in, was not equal with the loss they were at in not understanding the English tongue which rendered it impossible to join in the worship of God, till they were free and the Lord directed a Zoar for them where they could exercise themselves in the Christian religion as they were taught by their parents in Europe. Soon after they were gathered to the place where we now live, they concluded to build a Church and a School
house. But first they being just free were to poor ...........they petitioned the Governor and the House of Burgesses................and asked redress of their
Grievance, which was so granted that they had license to collect money, build a church, call minister. .............Full of love and gratitude for this advance
they send Three of the Congregation to Europe ..................."

This may be completely naive, but do you have any infomration on how Hans Jacob Broyles got to Virginia?

He is my 6th great-grandfather

Lewis Broyles b. 1763;
Jacob Broyles b. 1793;
Lewis Hays Broyles b. 1821;
Mary Lucinda Broyles b. 1874 who married Leonard Hall 1973, who had my grandfather James Virgil Hall).

Family legend has it that the Broyles were bond slaves in Virginia. They hired a ship in Germany and while stopping in London for provisions, the captain was seized for debts. The only way they could get to America was signing as bond slaves.

Any help in veryifying to disproving this story would be greatly appreciated.

hello, I am the daughter of Leroy Thomas Broyles. I met him as a young girl and visited his farm in Missouri. My father and mother passed away some 20 years ago. To my knowledge although he did remarry there were no children from that union. My father was his last child.
