Bruhn Family from South Dakota

Hello,
I am looking for information on the family of Paul Henry Bruhn and his wife Dora (Beck) Bruhn. They lived in Hillsview, McPherson County, South Dakota. Four children were born of this marriage:
Amelia Bruhn Born: August 1887
Henry Bruhn Born: January 1, 1889
Paul Bruhn Born: April 28, 1890
Edwin Walter Bruhn Born: February 17, 1895
Not sure if Dorothy aka Dora divorced Paul Henry Bruhn or he died, but about 1907 she marred Charles A. Alther,(his second marriage, his first wife was Sophia Orth). The family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am able to trace Charles and Dora Alther up to 1930 living in Minneapolis.
I am wondering if anyone out there might know where Charles A. Alther and his wife Dora are buried and when they died?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you, Keith Lawrence

k79lawrence@gmail.com

We were never told about the tombstone until we drove down that street and saw it. I want information as to why the tombstone is there... Can anyone help?

I too have done extensive research on Peter Frederick Bruhn but have nothing for his wife Maria. I do not have any info for Peter's parents or his siblings, only the children of Peter and Maria. My great Grandfather Johann was a brother to Hans and Claus. If would be glad to share any information I have with you and exchange what we can if you are interested.
I am a descendent of Peter Frederick Bruhn and Maria Margaretha Neimann but through the brother of Claus Peter named Hans Frederick Bruhn. Hans' son, Peter Frederick Bruhn (named for his grandfather) is my great-grandfather. Our family has done quite a bit of work on this line but know nothing of Maria Margaretha Neimann's family. This is five years after your original post but I guess it is worth a try.

Hi,
Saw your post and checked the parish records for Sæby (Hjorring, Denmark) and found the birth record for Marie Bruhn, born July 13, 1887 to parents Anders Christian Bruhn and Maren Katherine Moller (age 39)

I looked for that family in the 1890 Danish census and found:
Anders Chr Pedersen Bruhn 46 Husfader
Maren Kathrine Bruhn 42 Husmoder
Rechardt Chr Bruhn 19 Søn
Julliete Christine Bruhn 14 Datter
Robert Bruhn	11 Søn
Halfdan Bruhn	9 Søn
Evald Bruhn	5 Søn
Marie Bruhn	2 Datter

I don't see Carl Christian on the census, but perhaps he was born after 1890? Or if he was over 14 in 1890 he would likely have been living in another household (learning a trade) If you have his birth year, let me know and I'll look for him in the Sæby parish records.

J Murphy
(not related)
Hi Chris,
>
> I have put off writing to you because I didn't quite know how to reply.
> The information we both have about the Bruhns is in question for me, here
> is why.
>
> Our ancestry chart goes like this:
> Carl Christian Bruhn (our gr-grandfather)
> Peter Bruhn
> Hans Christian Bruhn
>
> My brother came up with the same names you did via the LDS Church records.
> He went at it from our great-grandfather Carl Christian Bruhn's "sister"
> Marie Bruhn b. 5 May 1878 - father Peter Bruhn - mother Margareth
> Christiane Bruhn (no maiden name)
>
> Peter Bruhn b. 8 Sept 1839 - father Hans Bruhn - mother Ane Magdalena
> Peterson
>
> Hans Bruhn b. 24 Jan 1814 - father Jurgen Bruhn - mother Maria Margaretha
> Borse
>
> Jurgen Bruhn b. 14 May 1781 - father Hans Bruhn - mother Maren Rebecka
> Bargum
>
> However the main problem with all of this from my perspective is that our
> U.S. death records show that our Marie was born 13 July 1887 in Saeby,
> Denmark. Which does not go with the LDS birth record above - So, I am not
> at all sure if the LDS records of Peter/Hans is our family, even though
> the names are the same.
>
> Our Peter Bruhn had eight children: Carl Christian, Juliette, Robert,
> Ewald, Marie, Halfdon, Katherine, and Clara. All born in Saeby, Denmark.
>
> Can you shed some light on this?
>
> Melanie
>
Hello Melanie.

It is very possible that there is a connection. Do you have birth and death dates for the individuals that you list? The "Jurgen Bruhn (gr-father)" that you list could be my wife's 3rd great-grandfather. My wife's 2nd great-grandmother, Maren Rebecka Bruhn was the first daughter born to Jørgen Bruhn. We don't know his parent's information, but perhaps his mother was the Maren Rebecka Bargum that you list and he named his first daughter after his mother.

Chris

For example Date and place of birth, date and place of marriage and date and place of death if known. Also and info if they travelled to the USA (date and port of departure/destination).
I am a descendant of Peter Bruhn of Denmark. His children (8) were all born in Saeby, Denmark, and five of the children came to the U.S. The ancestors of Peter are: Hans Christian Bruhn (father), Jurgen Bruhn (gr-father), Hans Bruhn (gr-gr-father)- who was married to Maren Rebecka Bargum. Does your family tree fit in with this?

Melanie

I am working with some corporation certificates for the Palmer School of Chiropractic from 1921. One of the names that showed up that I am unfamiliar with is H. W. Bruhn. It would make sense that this would be Henry [Henery], the banker. If you've learned anything about Henry in the past 10 years that would confirm this, I would love to hear about it.

The first names and location do not relate to my family, but Meier and Bruhn do. In my records, my mother and her brother visited an aunt, Mrs. H. W. Bruhn in Eldridge, Iowa on June 27, 1906. By other records, the aunt was probably a sister of Walter Meier and my mother's mother, Annie Meier Vollstedt. Their father was William Meier, b. 1841 in Germany and d. 1901 in Davenport, Iowa. I have a little more information on the Meier family.

We are probably related. Sorry for the long delay in responding :-). Schlesvig-Holstein is a small area, and there were a lot of small, scattered villages at the time. Most Bruhns were related. If you have more info, let me know. Where is the village located? I can share what I have....

Arnold Bruhn

Hi Stephan, I was born Carol Bruhn from rural Nebraska. Our great grandfather came from that area of Prussia in 1910. Don't know if we are related or not. His father was named Peter and mother Marie Nieman. Any links that you know of? We cannot find any trace of ancestors further back than that. We know no one in Germany to help. Do you have contact with German relatives? Thank You, perhaps we are distant cousins?

I can't help you substantively, but I can tell you that when August Bruhn who came from Germany in the late 1860's married Marie Krohne, he gave his name as Augustus Brown. You can look it up in the Indiana marriages from 1850 forward on Ancestry.com. As far as I know he never used Brown again, but he clearly was trying to Anglicize his name in 1870. Good luck on looking.
