I would be interested in any info you might have on the Brune family from Brinktown Mo. I am researching "Katie" Catherine Brune born March 15, 1850 in Freeburg Mo. She was the sixth child of Gerhard Anton Brune.
Thank you for your reply. I am checking Brune, also
I see it spelled Bruhne, Briene, Braene to name a few.
I wish I knew where she originated. My father said
Alsace Lorraine but it was Germany at the time.
Again thank you.

Hi,
I'm not related to your Bruene family, but the German surname "Brüne" [with a u-umlaut] is correctly written 'Bruene' in English, as you mentioned.

However, some families ended up dropping the umlaut [or it was dropped as they immigrated]. Most of my Brüne family ended up with the last name 'Brune'.

So you might want to check all three spellings.

Any info on Johannette Caroline Breune, mispelled
Brune. She was born in 1859/1860. She arrived in the
United States in 1883. Her younger sister was Augusta
Emma Bruene, born in 1872, arrived in the United States
in 1890. The family lived in St. Louis, Missouri, head
of house, Henry Scherf, married to Johannette.
My father said they were from Alsace Lorraine, then
part of Germany.

I have no articles on the Brune. Anne Beck would have info since she has been investigating the Brieger - Brune (my grandmother and grandfather.) I live in Hawaii so am really removed from the history. Just remember all the years as a child that I would visit Flatoia, Bastrop, Austin, Taylor, etc. Spent all my summers in Texas. Know a fair amount of the Brieger side of the family, but very little of the Brune.
Gretchen

In recent weeks Joan and I, and our immediate families, have met in person and exchanged photos and information. I'll leave it for her to tell more fully, but one of our discoveries is that she and I are 5th cousins, and the other is that (with help from a fourth cousin of mine, Jane Oberwortmann Meeker) Joan Fuson is descended from Oberwortmanns, who had changed the family name to Brune while still in Germany.

By having enriched each others knowledge of ancient family history, we now have much more to work with. And a great deal of the credit goes to those who have provided this forum and medium for exchange.

Thanks to one and all!

-DHF, Columbia, Missouri

... descended from John Frederick Louis Oberwortmann (gr-grandfather, b. 1858 -- whose grandfather Franz W. Oberwortmann was born in Prussia in 1799). His eldest daughter Lydia Oberwortmann married Emil Finke -- also of Berger, Missouri -- and they were parents of my father Hadley Eduard Finke who just died on October 3, 2006, here in Columbia having been born nearly 98 years ago in Berger, Missouri.

My husband's ggg grandmother Anna Elise Brune, born 23 May 1835, came to St. Louis at about the time you mention. She is definitely my "mystery woman". Who did she come with? Young women so very rarely traveled across oceans alone. Did she come with parents. Her father was Wilhelm Brune according to her death certificate.

In a civil ceremony in St. Louis, she married Henry Rocklage, also known as Heinrich Wilhelm, born in Dissen, Germany.

When she died, she left money to a Wilhelm Brune of Oesterweg in Germany.

Does any of this match your people?

My research has uncovered a letter written in 1966 by Stanley Oliver Brune. Sadly, he died in 1980 and his brother Russell Gordon Brune died in 1981. Both died in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. If you have any information regarding this family - Russell had three sons, one named Gordon, one named Michael and one possibly named Milton - I would very much like to speak with you. Thank you.

Brune's in Cincinnati

I just discovered that some of the Bruns family I have been trying to trace changed their name to Brune, sometime in the late 1800's/early 1900's. I have John Henry Bruns, son of Friedrich Bruns and Anna Brauksieck, born 1883. He is shown in church records as John Henry Bruns, but both his death notice and cemetery records (1933)show BRUNE. He was married to Elsie Meinberg.

I am specifically trying to find more information on his parents, Friedrich Bruns and Anna Brauksieck, but would be glad to hear from anyone who has more information on John Henry Bruns/Brune as well.

Dianne

Does anyone have any information about Fred Brune
who married Alma Lang and lived in Remson,
Iowa before moving to Santa Cruz, California
sometime between WWI and WWII. Fred and Alma
had Orlan Orlane (twins). Orlan married
Nina Teterin (from Harbin, China) and had
three children: Allen, David, and Carole.
We know that Fred came from Germany and that
the Brunes were teachers and ministers in
the Remson area. We believe they may have
settled Remson.

More info about Jacqueline Lebeters family, herself & Leonard Bomkamp. The name Black comes up in her family. I know she was born on December 2nd or 3rd , had a twin brother named Jack, lived in Chicago, was raised by her grandmother, (I believe her fathers mother) Jacqueline was in an institution in Chicago (? but know it was in IL) because she was an epileptic, married to a man with the last name of Melton & had 2 children by him named Susan & Lee Melton.

She then met Leonard D. Bomkamp a former Naval man during WW2 & had 2 sons named Richard D. Bomkamp & Patrick L. Bomkamp.

Both Leonard & Jacqueline moved to Milwaukee, Wi where their sons were born. They had a common law marriage in Chicago but not in Milwaukee. Jacqueline died I believe a year after Leonard in 1996. She had many health problems (like Leonard) & had cancer at one time.

Leonard D. Bomkamp:

has or had a brother named Gil. (Chicago) Leonard was married before he met Jacqueline. He had no children with his first wife.

Brune's in Indiana

My wife's ggrandfather was William D. Brune. He was born in Dessen, Hanover, Germany June 19th 1836, and died in Greensburg, Indiana, January 1st, 1914. He married Adeline Grawe and they had eight children. William's obituary says he came to the US in 1854, locating in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he learned the cooper's trade. He moved to the Greensburg,IN area. We have a fairly complete family history of some of their children: john (b:1866),Minnie(b: 1870),and Sohpia(b:1878). We more limited information on Mary(b:1872), Anne(b:1875), and Albert(b:1877). We have only the names and birthdates of their other children: William(b:1867), Henry(b:1869), Margaret(b:1873), Sonvis(b:1880), and Edward(b:1882). We also know that William was accompanied by his father, brother Richard, and an Uncle Dick on the trip from Dresden, Germany. We also have references to a sister Lottie who married a ? Huenefelt.

Looking for more information on William's family; especially the links to Germany.
Yes, William Brune came to the US in 1854 and originally settled in Cincinnati, OH. He moved to Decatur County, IN sometime later and married Adaline Grawe in 1865. He traveled to the US with his Richard and apparently came through New Orleans, traveling up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to Ohio.

I have also been conversing with another person who traces back to a John Henry Brune who we suspect was William's brother but have not been able to prove it. However, this John Brune married a Christina Horstman and moved to Missouri.
