The dates are wrong. Louisa died February 12, 1870 so very unlikely she had any children after 1870. The birthdate I have for Vitaline Brunelle married to Pierre King aka Roy Primeau is June 27, 1854 and I believe she and John Baptiste Brunelle were twins. Are you sure the Vitaline you are looking for was born in 1882?

Hi Everyone,

I have hit a road block with my Brunelle line. I am seeking information on Phillippe Brunelle and his wife Malvina Pigeon. I have most of the information on their 13 children.

They were married in Saint-François-Xavier-de-Shefford Parish in 1871. The parish records according to family search only go back to 1859. Anyone familiar with how this parish might have been restructured in 1859? What was the name of the parish prior to 1859?

I am trying to locate their baptismal records and information on their parents. Phillippe Brunelle's parents were Augstin and marguerite Bernard. Malvina Pigeon's parents were Regis and Marie brubon.

Thank you.
This Camille was born and raised in Montreal so dont know if it is him or not. There was a big age difference between my Mother and Camille so they did not really keep in touch.
Caryl

Wow, my grandfather is Camille P. Brunelle and he was born in Lowell, Mass. His second wife was Ethel Evelyn Rose, who went by the name Evelyn. They had 3 children Oswald, Bernard and Shirley. Shirley is my Mother and still alive. Ethel Rose was one of 10 children and was Jewish. I only know that Bernard was married to Dolly and had 2 children Richard (I think) and Clifford, who I remember. I think he may have had a step son too but not sure. I think I remember Dolly and Clifford moving to Ontario. Camille died in 1943.

I see that you have at least one other query on another forum about this lady. It would be helpful for responders if you could combine all the known information about this lady--might save someone some unnecessary research.

Suggestion: since these are fairly uncommon surnames, perhaps you could look for her parents (father, mother, stepfather) in the Social Security Death Index. If you can find their deaths, perhaps you can find their obituaries, too. These obits (maybe even death certificates) might provide clues about the daughter.

Good luck!

Good day,

I am seeking information on a Clara G. Brunelle. She is my Great Grandmother. What little I know I will detail below. If you can provide anything please post here or email me directly at modoc31@gmail.com

My grandfather, Harvey Harold Berger was born Feb 1927 in MA. On the re-issue of his baptismal certificate from St. Michael's Cathedral in Springfield (1941), MA his mother's name is listed as Clara G. Brunelle and his father is listed as Randolph Berger. On the 1930 census Harvey Berger is listed as living in an orphanage in Springfield, MA and is age 3. Also, on the 1930 Census I did find Randolph Berger stationed in CT with the US Navy, but I am not sure that this is the same man.

I have not been able to locate any information reading Clara G. Brunelle. No obituary, birth record, no marriage record, absolutely nothing.

What happened to Clara? Did she die young? Did she give her son up for adoption?

Can you help?

Thank you,
Keith Mageau

Re: Joseph & Virginie BRUNELLE of Lowell, MA (born Canada)

Sorry Harriet, but the Brunelles of Canada did not immigrate as Brunelles. Sounds weird, doesn't it?

The progenitor of most Brunelles in Canada was Hilaire Limousin dit Beaufort (1633-l708) from the city of Poitiers in the old French province of Poitou. He came from France in 1665 as a soldier in the Carignan-Salières Regiment. He took the "dit name" when he was a soldier, a common practice, which in Canada extended to civilians as well (dit = also known as). Because the early colonists were so prolific it became more and more necessary to adopt dit names to differentiate one line from another with the same surname, particularly since there was not a lot of variation in first names (Joseph, Pierre, François, Paul,René etc. often repeated).

Anyway, Hilaire Limousin dit Beaufort accepted inducements to stay in Canada when the regiment went home to France, married, and had 13 children, of which ten were girls. His son Joseph Limousin dit Beaufort (1692-1770) was the only son of Hilaire to perpetuate the male line.

For some reason this Joseph took another dit name in the 1720s as an adult, dit Brunel. Most Brunelles in Canada descended from the four sons of Joseph Limousin dit Beaufort dit Brunel (I am descended from his son François Beaufort dit Brunel). The third generation dropped the Limousin name entirely and were known as Beaufort dit Brunel, alternatively as Brunel dit Beaufort. After a couple of more generations the Beaufort surname was dropped and the Brunel became standardized as Brunelle.

There also was a Jacques Brunel who came from France in the 17th century (no dit name), but that line was not as prolific.

Sorry for the long-winded version, but the concept of dit names peculiar to French-Canadian research can be confusing. Bottom line. Immigrants from France with the surname Brunelle, including your Gaston, are not related to most Canada Brunelles. My Brunelle research by the way is only my ancestral line, not a one-name study of all Brunelles (there are genealogists who specialize in that, but I don't know of any who do Brunelle research).

Good luck, Bill

Re: Joseph & Virginie BRUNELLE of Lowell, MA (born Canada)

Don't know how I missed this four years ago, but here goes. Virginie-Marie Brunelle (1855-1932) was the eldest of 11 children of Pierre Brunelle (1829-1903) and of Clarisse Roch (1832-1910) of St-Norbert-de-Berthier, in what was then Canada East (Québec). She was the brother of my great grandfather Joseph Albert Brunelle (1867-1946).

Virginie came with her family in 1874 to Lowell, Massachusetts. Her husband Joseph was her first cousin. Joseph Brunelle (1857-1947) was the son of François Brunelle (1827-1899), the brother of the above Pierre Brunelle (1829-1903), and of Henriette Plouffe (1830-1879). That family also moved from St-Norbert to Lowell, about 1872. Virginie and Joseph went back to St-Norbert to marry 19 Oct 1879, then returned to Lowell, where they had seven children (a daughter named Marie-Melodie lived less than two years). The other children you cite are consistent with my records.

I have done extensive research on the Brunelle line, every line, including the female lines, back to their immigrations, most of course in the 1600s. I am now in the process of verifying my original research with newer sources and smoothing up narrative notes, etc. I will be glad to help you in any way, but be warned, the ahnentafel back from Virginie comprises 877 pages in my FTM database (581 pages of narrative, the rest being "end notes" which list sources for each fact cited). The standard tree in book form from Virginie on back is 115 pages.

Providing these in hard copy would require too much time, paper and printer toner, but I would be glad to send either or both as large .pdf files. Alternatively, if you want the fun of doing your own research and just want to bridge some gaps, I'd be glad to pare down these "reports" to just a few generations. If you want to send them as .pdf files, it would probably be adviseable to contact me directly rather than through the Ancestry.com site.

Good to finally see some renewed acativity at Brunelle site.

Bill Brunelle

Well this is 4 years late, but if your still looking I can help some. Virginie Brunelle died 8/26/1932 and her maiden name was actually Brunelle. Joseph Brunelle died 1/19/1947. I think, but am not certain that Joseph is the brother of my GG Grandfather Albert Brunelle whos parents were Paul Brunelle and Caroline Halere (don't know how correct this spelling is).

try this site to look up Lowell death/birth/marriage dates http://library.uml.edu/clh/Vital.Html

And then I recommend you subscribe to newspaperarchives.com to look up obits and such. Hope this helps some if you still need it.

I hope that this reply finds you. I believe I am related to your Louise Brunelle. My 4G grandmother is Angelia (Angelina) Brunelle Begin whose parents were Joseph Brunelle Jr and Louise LeGros. Angelina had a number of siblings and one of her younger sisters was named Louise. When their mother died early, Angelina took in 4 of her siblings along with her own children and Louise was one of them. We too have always heard that there is Native American in the Brunelle side. We are close to making the connection back to the French/Indian fur trader they came from. Would love to connect with more family.

Hi, Jolynn,
I can't confirm whether or not Leandre's parents were Joseph and Josette Oligny.
But I can tell you that Joseph Brunel and Josette Oligny were married 28 Nov 1826 at Ste-Marguerite-de-Blairfindie, L'Acadie, St-Jean County, Quebec, Canada. (Attached)
Joseph Brunel is the son of Joseph Brunel and Françoise Maillé; Josette Oligny was the son of Louis Oligny and Josette Tremblay.
My gggrandfather is Leandre (Leon) Brunell (I am not positive about the spelling of the last name--so I'm posting this on all 3 boards!). He was born about 1847 in Lyon Mountain, Clinton Co., NY. He married Emmeline D'Aoust on 14 Nov 1870 in Redford. Clinton Co., NY. My great grandmother is their daughter Josephine, who was born in Lyon Mountain about 1879.

I believe Leandre's father is Joseph Brunell and that he was married to Josette Oligny. They were from Canada. Is there anyone who has the family in their line and can give me some information about where in Canada this family came from?

There are no online resources for research in pre-1600s France. There are very few records available in that time period and fewer still before 1550. They are in the custody of the parishes and many of the parishes have not allowed access to those records. The ones that have been filmed would be available through the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City, UT. Many people have traveled to France to try to see these records and most are unable to get back any earlier than they already had.

Regards,
Sharyn

Jacques Brunel, born in 1645 son of Jean Brunel and Anne Madry, married to Suzanne Bertault at bouchervilleeeee, the 24th of Nover, l677. He was originally from St. Remy de Dieppe, France. Also there is another note as follows: Jean Brunel de la Sablonniere, son of Jean Brunel and of Jeanne Bousignot, of St. Micholassss des Champs, Paris, spouse Madeleine Ricaume, married April 1, 1667 at Boucherville..
I have Edouard Ovide as the son of Pierre Edouard & Theotiste Bailly, b. 3/8/1821 Notre Dame de la Visitation, godparents Paul Dubord & Olympe Brunel. It appears from your message that you are saying he is the son of Pierre Ulric & Emilie Sauvageau b. abt. 1830, and this confuses me as Pierre & Emelie were married in 1848. Is the Edouard Ovide above the spouse of Marguerite Marchand. ?

My source for Edouard Ovide's birth Repertoire des baptemes de la paroisse Notre Dame de la Visitation de Champlain Comte de Champlain 1679-1985 Page 62.

Candy : I too am researching the Brunelle,Beaufort, Limousin and descend from Hilaire, Joseph, Alexis, Alexis, Celestin,Elie, Joseph Elie (my grandfather). Any information you would be willing to share would be greatly appreciated.

I would be willing to share whatever I have that would be of interest to you. Unfortunately I am not in your area and so do not have access to info from that area. My family finally ended up in Vermont. It is interesting to see how the family branched off into various areas. I have found that Liana is extremely helpful and willing to share.

Jean Fredette

Les: Thanks for getting back to me. I didn't ask the age of your mother but that might help me in seeing if we are in the right time frame. My grandfather had a brother Edward Napoleon (Pete) who had daughters Aurora and Dorothie, Fabiola and Priscilla. However, I know virtually nothing else about them. Pete was born about 1862 and his wifes name was Elizabeth but don't know the last name. Sounds like a possiblity if the time frame is right.

Jean
