Phillip and Zylphia Bruton descendents

I would appreciate hearing from anyone descended from Phillip Bruton b)1794 (son of Major George Bruton) who married his 1st cousin, Zylphia Bruton b)1798 (daughter of Enoch Bruton). I'm hoping for a current roll call of sorts for this line, to begin a collaboration effort. It would be great if we could discuss the searches we've made for Phillip and Zylphia's death dates, info on all their children, family pictures, etc.

My line from Phillip and Zylphia is through their youngest son, Elisha Miles Bruton, b)1833 in prob. Franklin or Marion Co., Alabama. He married Mary Ann Tennyson and died in Tishomingo Co, Mississippi.

Look forward to sharing info with other cousins.
Rebecca Bruton Moss
rebbmoss@msn.com

Bruton/Brewton DNA

You know what is fun? when you can say I told you so! It looks as if the early results of the DNA study is proving that the Brutons of NC and SC in the early 1740's ,50's and 60's are of the same blood line. This affects Brutons in Ga, Ala, Miss, LA, Mo, TN, and TX. You should check it out at the Family tree DNA http://www.familytreedna.com/public/BrutonBrewtonDNAStudy/we....

Bruton/Brewton/Tippins Connection

I know that the fact that a Tippins signed Old David's will has been visited on this forum before, but wondered if anyone has done an exhausted search of the Bruton/Brewton/Tippins connection. According to info I found, this William Tippins who signed the will could possibly be the brother of Phillip Tippins. Phillip's parents moved from Anson County, NC to Spartanburg Co, SC. Phillip left to GA and later returned to Spartanburg Co again, before permanently settling in Georgia. He lived near Nathan Bruton/Brewton in GA and may be buried in the old Bruton graveyard there. The following is part of a query I just put on the Tippins family Board: I am interested in old Phillip Tippins' parents, siblings, and his brother William, specifically their Anson Co, NC and Spartanburg Co, SC relatives and neighbors. Do you know who Phillip's sisters were and who they married? I find it interesing that Phillip lived near my Brutons in SC and his brother possibly signed my ancestor, David Bruton's will. Later Phillip Tippins was near Nathan Bruton in GA, his decendents marrying into this family and later moving to Brewton, Alabama. While DNA shows a connection between these 2 Bruton/Brewton families, it is not know where the connection is. It is my thought that the Tippins family proves that these families all knew each other in Phillip Tippins' time.Would appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you, Rebecca Bruton Moss

Filmed by The Baptist Historical Collection, Furman University Library, in 1977
Microfilm negative is held by the Historical Commission, Southern Baptist Convention, Nashville, Tenn
Reproduced Microfilm. Nashville, Tenn. : Historical Commission, Southern Baptist Convention, 1984. 1 microfilm reel : positive ; 35 mm. (Pub. no. 5608)
Notes First Baptist Church, Woodruff, S.C. papers

Notes on Bethel Baptist Church at Woodruff, Spartanburg Co, SC:
The first pastorate and longest was that of Richard Shackleford who served for 27 years. Among the early pastors were Dr. James C. Furman, who became president of Furman University, and Dr. John A. Broadus, who became president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Richard Shackelford and Mary Ann Roberts, were married in about 1768, probably in Halifax County, Virginia. In the 1780s, Richard and Mary Ann Shackelford moved their family from Virginia to South Carolina, where he was a prominent Baptist preacher in the Spartanburg and Laurens County area in the late 1700s and early 1800s. A history of the South Carolina Baptist church reports: "The largest and probably the most influential Baptist church of the back country in the quarter century following the revolution was located on the ridge between Enoree and Tyger Rivers and was known officially as Jamey's Creek Church until 1798, when the Bethel Association agreed, upon request, that it 'be hereafter called Bethel' Church. Its neighbors of that period know it as Shackelford's meeting or Richard Shackelford's church." The Bethel Association Minutes show that between 1790 and 1803 Richard Shackelford baptized 158 individuals, including 80 in 1802.

The Shackelford family later moved to the Madison County Alabama area (note: Old David's brother also moved here), where Richard was pastor of Enon Baptist Church. Enon Church and its pastor are described in another history of the Baptist church: "Enon Church was formerly known by the name of W. Fork, of Flint River. It appears that Mr. Shackelford died in 1823... With regard to Mr.
Shackelford, ...frequently moderator in the Flint River Association, we were personally acquainted with him for some years; we think he was a native of Virginia, ordained in that state, or N. Carolina; resided many years in South Carolina, and was often chosen moderator of Bethel Association. He was highly esteemed as an active, good minister of Jesus Christ.

The Fairforest Baptist Church in Union County, SC has the honor of being the first back country church. It was organized in 1762 by a group of settlers who came from North Carolina. "It received," one wrote,"the sobriquet of `Duck Pond' but the official name was Fairforest." The virgin forest was so beautiful that someone on seeing it for the first time exclaimed, "What a fair forest!" and the area was so named. Friendship, Boiling Springs, Skull Shoals, Coucher, Jamey's Creek and many other churches were spon-
sored by the Fairforest Church.

I wonder if the records mentions Old David Brewton or if it mentions the death of his first wife, etc.
HAS ANYONE SEEN THEM?
Thanks, Rebecca Bruton Moss

Benjamin Bruton b abt 1813 SC m Annica Pruitt, Tishomingo & Alcorn Co MS

I recently found this branch of my Bruton family in Tishomingo & Alcorn Co MS. Benjamin Bruton b abt 1813 SC was the son of my ggg grandparents David Bruton b abt 1790 SC and Nancy Langford or Lankford b abt 1794 SC. Benjamin is the only child of David & Nancy who did not move to Missouri in the late 1840s.

Benjamin Bruton b 1813 married Annica Pruitt and had these children:

CYNTHIA BRUTON b abt 1849 MS m Dr. Moses Marion Sanders
NANCY BRUTON b abt 1853 MS
CAYCE or CALLIE BRUTON ba bt 1856 MS , named after her maternal grandmother Cayce Pruitt who lived with the family 1850 & 1860 census
MARY A BRUTON b abt 1860 MS
ANNAH BRUTON b abt 1860 MS Not sure what happened to her, or if this was a census takers error? and really the same person as Mary A Bruton?
BELL or ALICE? BELL BRUTON b abt 1862 MS listed as "A.B. Bruton" in 1880 census.

This info is as per the following census records. The surname was frequently misspelled, and often transcribed incorrectly in the census index!!!!

1850 Tishomingo Co MS
1860 Tishomingo Co MS Corinth
1870 Alcorn Co MS Corinth
1880 Alcorn Co MS District 1, Benjamin's widow incorrectly transcribed as "America Bruton", daughters "M.A. and A. B."

I have alot of information on the rest of the family that moved to Missouri, if anyone is interested.

Looking for information on unknown male Bruton who married Mary Elliene O'Meara. She was born in October of 1858, somewhere in Texas, daughter of John Edward O'Meara and Ellen McDonald. She married a second time on November 2, 1885 to George Calloway Cavender in Dimmit County, Texas.
1880 Zavala County, Texas census lists her as Mary Bruton, living with the family of Henry C. Vivian. In the same household are:Annie Vivian, her sister, Helen (Ellen) Carrigan, her mother with last name from second marriage and John O'Meara, her younger brother. Any help on identifying her Bruton husband and his family would be appreciated.
David Bruton-Tedford-Pemberton Wayne Co., KY

Dear Cousins: Help, please! Can any one help with this puzzle? Marriage records for Wayne County, KY show David Bruton marrying Rosanna Tedford there on 26 May 1811. A David appears regularly on the Wayne County tax rolls from 1806. In 1824 David sells his land in Wayne County (to Israel Young) and disappears from the tax record. I have visited Barry Cemetery in Platte County, Missouri. There I found the two following graves: David BRUTON died 11 Dec 1863; [and] Rosanna B, wife of David Bruton, died 7 October 1851. David (S.C.) and Rosannah (PA) appear in the 1850 census for Platte County, MO. David appears in a listing of taxpayers in Platte as early as 1839. Two questions: 1) This David, husband of Rosanna(h) Tedford appears to have been born in SC in 1789. Can any one help on his parents? 2) A David Bruton married Nancy Pemberton in Wayne County in 1804. That David Bruton may have been born in 1785. Can any one help on how these two David Brutons relate, differentiate between the two, and/or clarify what became of David Bruton/Nancy Pemberton? Many thanks!
