JACOB COCKRAM/COCHRAN & wife CELIA/SELAH/CECILIA Spartanburg SC to Chattooga GA BRUTON CONNECTION

JACOB COCHRAN/COCKRAM b abt 1800 who married CELIA/SELAH/CECILIA may have been the son of WILLIAM COCKRAM/COCKERHAM, who is listed in the 1810 Spartanburg Co SC census, and witnessed a land deed in Spartanburg SC in 1812.

CELIA/SELAH/CECILIA (maiden name unknown) was a granddaughter of SUSANNAH, wife of DAVID BRUTON/BREWTON Sr of Spartanburg SC (but CELIA probably from a previous marriage?). I have not been able to find out who CELIA's parents were. However, SUSANNAH left CELIA'S children property in her estate:

--1825 March 28 Spartanburg SC; SUSANNAH BREWTON (Spartanburg) to great granddaughter REBECCA ADELINE COCHRAN; for love and affection give a feather bed and teester, bedstead, 8 counterpins (counterpanes?), 8 bedquilts, an oven leds (?), a pine table, an oven and lid, a frying pan, a cupboard, 2 pewter plates, 5 earthen plates, 2 pitchers, 2 mugs, 6 earthen bowls, a spinning wheel, a black chest, and a set of canapies (canopies?). SUSANNAH BREWTON keeps the stuff until she dies. Witnessed : Joseph Woodruff, Harrison Woodruff, and Thomas Woodruff III. Signed SUSANNAH BREWTON's mark. Wit. Oath Nov 4, 1825 Thomas Woodruff III to Philip Brewton. Recd. Nov 12, 1825.

Source: South Carolina Deed Abstracts Book A-T 1785-1827 by Albert Bruce Pruitt.

--Will of SUSANNAH (maiden name unknown) BRUTON 1838 Spartanburg SC: I, SUSANNAH BRUTON, of the state and district aforesaid, being of sound and disposing mind and understanding, do make my last will and testament in manner and form following. Viz: I give and devise unto my great-granddaughter SUSANNAH E.B. COCKRAM (COCHRAN) of the State and district aforesaid, the tract of landwhereon I now live, containing seventy acres more or less. And also, all my personal Estate of whatever kind in trust for the following uses and purposes toViz: For the sole and separate use of her mother CELIA COCKRAN during her natural life free from and without the control of her husband JACOB COCHRAN and after the death of said COCHRAN for the use and benefit of the said SUSANNAH E. B.COCHRAN her heirs and assigns forever.

--I nominate constitute and appoint my said great-granddaughter SUSANNAH E. B. COCHRAN executrix of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all wills heretofore made by me, ratifying and confirming this my last will and testament.

--In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty third day of April 1835. Signed sealed and acknowledged, SUSANNAH X BRUTON her mark By the Testatrix in our presence and by me Subscribed in her presence
CP Woodruff and A P Woodruff

CELIA/SELAH/CECILIA married JACOB COCKRAM/COCHRAN around 1815, probably in Spartanburg SC, and had seven children, as per later census records and records from Spartanburg:
SUSANNAH E.B. COCKRAM/COCHRAN, b 1817-1820;
JAMES D. COCKRAM/COCHRAN b abt 1818;
REBECCA ADELINE COCKRAM/COCHRAN b abt 1822;
MELISSA COCKRAM/COCHRAN b abt 1830;
EBER COCKRAM/COCKRAN b abt 1832
TWO OTHER SONS COCKRAM/COCHRAN b 1820-1820

CELIA/SELAH/CECILIA COCKRAM/COCHRAN is listed in the 1830 and 1840 Spartanburg SC census, a mid-aged woman living alone with 4 boys and 3 girls; in 1830 her grandmother SUSANNAH BRUTON was living with her. It is unknown if JACOB COCKRAM/COCHRAN died or abandoned her, or if they were divorced.

1850 census Chattooga Co GA shows SELA COCKRAM age 55, REBECCA age 22, MELISSA age 20, EBER age 18; they were living next door to JAMES D.
Yes I am in NZ. I have only just started looking again actually, prompted by a family incident last week. So I hit all the areas again that I was looking in. Gosh, so your grandad was JEB!!! Thats fabulous. I was scanning the net and have found some photos etc that he has done over his years, and even to hid death in the Isle of Man. I wonder how we can email each other??? Now I have noticed I can email and attach photos so here goes, have attached 2 for you.The last name on Neil brutons' site is my great grandad, Sydney and he is the one who came over here. I wonder if we have the same James Edward Bruton??? Is he the photgrapher your James? I am 45 and Sydney is my gt grandad. He had 4 children, Edward Valentine, Winnifred, Enid and James Ernley. They had another child, Kenneth but he died at age 6 in Melbourne Australia. They were in Argentina as that was were my nana, Enid was born and then 1 yr later in 1912 ended up in Melbourne. Came over here approx 1923, havent been able to find the exact year. Look forward to seeing if you can see my pictures. I am going to see if I can put an email on here so you can contact me directly. Bye for now....oh where are you living, USA? There is a Jimmy Bruton who has helped me enourmously regarding this family, no realtion but sends me everything he can when directed to my side of the family.

I am trying to find any ancestors of my great uncle, William Samuel Bruton who was born in Bristol, England in 1879. He and his wife Mary Hannah Barraclough Wood (1880)emigrated to Canada in 1905 with their children Doris Albina + Arthur Samuel. Minnie, Jabez + Louis were born in Lindsay, Victoria, Ontario, Canada. (The sons dying in childhood.)
Arthur was in the US Marines in 1925.
I believe Doris never married, but Minnie may have married into the Thomas family. Minnie + Doris lived in Hamilton, Ontario in the 1970's.
I would be greatful for any information.

Thanks for the reply. I cant see a link between your family of Brutons and the ones I have been researching. But Id say they are related somewhere.
Ive just gone through my records and Michael Bruton (1805) was found on the Middlesex London 1851 Census. Birth Place Ireland, occupation Tailor, age 46. He was with his wife Esther Bruton, age 42 and son Thomas and Daughter Elizabeth. All stated as born in Ireland.
Ive never searched the 1841 census to see if they were on there, so have no idea when they moved to the UK
Cheers
Darren

Hi,
Im a decendant of Thomas Bruton who was born in Loughrea 18/12/1829. He moved to England (Manchester then Stafford) and married a woman called Marcella Barrett. His trade was a Tailor. Thomas's parents were a Michael Bruton born 1805. He married an Esther O'Brien born 1809. Thomas had a sister called Elizabeth Bruton born 1833. This research was done a couple of years ago. I havent done anything else since. Would be interested to hear from anyone who is also linked to this family or anyone with more information on these Brutons in Ireland.
Thanks
Darren

Hi,
I think I was intouch with your mother as thats the same information as I have saved in my familiy tree software. It would be really interesting to find out more about Michael and Esther. I wonder where Michaels parents came from? I wouldnt know where to start with that search. As I say the only search left here in the UK is the 1841 census for Michael, Esther, Thomas and Elizabeth.

I havent heard from Dean in a long time. I didnt realise he took the DNA test

Darren

Yes, Betty's Boneyard is my website, but my Rootsweb Worldconnect online family tree bruton2 has more documentation.

Here are my notes on NICHOLAS LANGFORD Jr and his sons ELI, ROBERT & HENRY; see the online family tree for more. Items in parentheses are my own notes:

NICHOLAS LANGFORD Jr: His Will returned to court May 27, 1779 Henry Co VA (which was previously Pittsylvania Co VA); wife JUDITH, sons ELI, ROBERT & HENRY as executors.

Moved from New Kent to Caroline Co VA with father & siblings; then around 1760 to Pittsylvania Co, which part became Henry Co VA , near the VA/NC border.

"In HENRY COUNTY VIRGINIA NICHOLAS LANGFORD JR, had settled on MILL CREEK on the NORTH MAYO RIVER, a location on the present boundary of HENRY and PATRICK COUNTY VA, and about 10 miles north of the present day North Carolina Border. This land was originally in PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY VA, it became a part of HENRY COUNTY in 1776.
Receiving grants near by were:
ELI LANGFORD (SR) November 07 1765
ROBERT LANGFORD on NOVEMBER 14, 1765
JOHN LANGFORD on November 19 1765
Based on location of these grants and their proximity to NICHOLAS LANGFORD SR., it is reasonable to conclude that Robert, Henry and Eli Langford were brothers and sons of NICHOLAS LANGFORD JR."

(Entry Record Book 1737-1770 Land Entries in the present Virginia Counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin and Patrick, Pages 281-282)
Source: Rootsweb/Ancestry.com post by Rose Cranston

1767 tax list Pittsylvania Co VA

Apparently had some kind of financial troubles during his lifetime as per Pittsylvania/Henry Co VA court records. One researcher notes that he was sued several times (?)

May 27 1768 Pittsylvania Co VA court records:

Roberts vs Lankford Judg
James Roberts jun P. (plaintiff) ag NICHOLAS LANKFORD D. (defendant) In Trespass on the Case This day came the P. by his Attorney, and the D. saith he cannot deny that the said P. hath sustained Damages by reason of the breach of that assumption, besides his Costs to Four pounds, twelve shillings, and seven pence half penny. Therefore, it is considered by the Court that the P. recover against the said D his Damages in form aforesaid confessed together with his Costs. By consent of P. it is ordered that Execution be stay'd till October next.
