Hi,

I've just been reading the posts re Isbel Bryces. I have an Isabella Bryce in my family tree, who married a James Allan (farmer) of Avondale - shown as my great-great grandfather's parents on his death certificate. However the only marriage of an Allan and Bryce I have found in the area is of a James Allan to a Jean Bryce, Here the plot thickens. My great-grandfather had a daughter Isabella Allan who married an Andrew Gibb and moved to Greenwich and in one census return they have a Thomas B Allan in the household shown as cousin. Tracking back, I make him the son of a William Allan, whose parents turn out to be James Allan and - Jean Bryce. The question is - did the same James Allan marry two Bryces (to be first cousins this would answer) or was Isabella also known as Jean (her death record shows Jane, to make matters worse) - or are they 2nd or 3rd cousins on either the Allan or the Bryce side - or both?

Rich - if you see this, you mention an Isbel in your tree - can you help me at all with this mystery?

MoragC

Bill, Your Thomas in my records was the son of Thomas and Margaret (Nee Dick), who was the son of Thomas and Christina (Nee Miller) Christina's father according to death certificate was Alexander, Did you know that a James Bryce married a Catherine )Nee Miller ) and they came to australia via South Africa. I see by tghe shipping records your family is the same line as mine. Found it interesting that your Thomas also married a Christina Miller. Ruth.

Hi Richard, Thanks for your E-mail but I do not link your Thomas Bryce with the person I am searching for. My Thomas was born in 1821 and married Christina Miller in 1845. They migrated to Australia leaving from Plymouth on 26/08/1851. The ship they travelled on was the ship"Hydaspes". There are so many Thomas Bryces that it becomes frustrating trying to indentify who our ancestors really were. Thanks again for your help. Reguards Bill Winfield.

An 1803 birth is probably a bit late for my Thomas. He got Elizabeth in the family way in April/May 1818, so your Thomas would only have beeb 14 or 15 at that time, whereas Elizabeth was 19 coming up 20.

Rich

Bill,

The only Thomas BRYCE in ScotlandsPeople bapised in Old Monland was in 1850.

The only baptism recorded in Lanarkshire in 1821 was to John Bryce and Janet Hamilton 1st November in Barony. It's also in IGI so you probably already have seen that one. There's also a baptism in Covington, Lanarks in 1820, parents Alexander Bryce and Barbara Scouler.

Your Thomas may have been living in Old Monkland when he married, but it looks like he was born elsewhere. I'm assuming the marriage entry gives his age, or is the year of birth derived from census data or death entry?

Have you looked for clues in the names of Thomas and Christina's children? Scottish naming convention is often a good indicator of who the parents are. You say they had three boys and three girls. That's ofen enough o work from.

Rich

I have no details of who their Parents were or what they did for a living, nor do I know if they had Brothers and Sisters etc and what happened to them.
Bill, have you checked ScotlandsPeople? Thomas Bryce and Jane/Janet Harvie and John Bryce and Mary Aitken were parents of baptisms in this period in Old Monkland. A Christian Miller was baptised there in 28 Oct 1827 according to IGI, parents WILLIAM MILLAR and JANET BROWNLIE.

Thomas and Jane had a daughter Margaret baptised there in 1813, so he is a Thomas I have eliminated as unlikely to have been in Dalry in 1818.

Rich

Thomas, Christina, James, William and Thomas arrived in Adelaide, Australia on the ship "Hydaspes" leaving Plymouth 26 August 1851, arriving November 27, 1851. (Have the passenger list.) Lived in Eaglehawk, area having the 3 daughters, then operating a shop of sorts in Sydney Flats, (This area) both died in the same year about 5 months apart. Believe a Davies/Davis family looked after them as the youngest was under 1 year old. Thomas returned back to here returning from Queensland where it was reported that he had an outback property, he was survived by his wife Margaret Dick, whose family were out at Elmore at the time of marriage to Thomas. Have children of this line. Hope that helps. Ruth

I am searching for the family of a soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Allegheny County, Pennsylvania as his home of record.

Soldier: ROGER CLARENCE BRYCE
Born: 1931
Date of loss: November 15, 1950 KIA
Ra13312999
A Co 562nd Eng Boat Shore Rgt, U S Arny

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
By any chance, is there an Isabella Bryce in your line born in 1799, Married some time in the 1820's or ealy 1830's to a man with the last name of WALKER. I'm having an extremely difficult time looking for my GGG Grandmother. She and her daughter also Isabella who was born in 1834 came to the US in 1854, were naturalized in 1859. the daughter Isabella married a man with the last name of LORD, but not known where. She later married Ahira Webber HANKS in 1868. I am trying desperately to find where they came from in Scotland, Isabella WALKER HANKS' death certificate says they were from Glasgow but I'm not having any luck at all.

Hello, Rather late in the day but I came across a sampler embridered by Mary Bryce of Boness in 1870. As it was typically a childhood hobby, I guess she was born around 1860 and was my mother's aunt. My mother was mary Bryce Smith after her and she could well have married into the Smith family. I would be surnamed Scott if my father had married my mother. The families were all around the Lowlands area from Boness, Kidlington, Polmont (where I was born in 1937) to Airdrie and East Glasgow. My greatgrandfather was a Watt from Alford in Aberdeenshire and my great grandmother from Islay (I knew both of them. Would like to know more of the Bryces, Regards, Ian Jenkins Somerset step father!)

Re: Ebenezer Bryce

You may already have this info, but just in case not:

According to LDS, an Isbel Bryce married William Walker, 5th December 1834 in Gorbals (Glasgow). There is only one marriage in Scotlandspeople of an Is* Bryce to a Walker in the period 1 Jan 1825-31 Dec 1835. It is also in 1834. The same marriage I'd imagine, but I don't have any credits left on Scotlandspeople to check. Could this be them? You can view the image on Scotlandspeople. It might give you parents and/or witnesses.

According to Scotlandspeople there were two Is* Bryce and two Is* Brice births in 1798/99/00. These four are also the only ones in LDS. The only one born in 1799 was in Dalziel. She is in my family and I know her history so she can be eliminated. The other three were born and chistened in 1798. One in Dunblane, Perthshire, one in Carstairs Lanarks (15 July) and one in Gorbals. The Gorbals girl was xned Isable, born 20 DEC 1798 to Matthew Bryce and Christian Crawford. However she seems to have died in infancy because the same parents had another daughter Isabell born 8 April 1807. This latter Isabell would have been of the right age for the marriage to William Walker.

So if your Isabella was Lanarkshire born, and before 1800, she would have to be from Carstairs, Isobel daughter of John Bryce and Margaret Justice. But Carstairs is 24 miles from Glasgow, whereas Gorbals is part of Glasgow.

There are no Isabella (or similar) Walker births in or around 1834 on Scotlandspeople. Perhaps they just didn't bother to have her christened. That wasn't very common, but not unheard of.

Good luck with the search.

Rich

Thomas BRYCE in Scotland 1700's - Yours?

I'm trying to narow down the candidates for my 3xgr granddad Thomas BRYCE.

He was a weaver in Dalry, Ayr, in April/May 1818 when he got Elizabeth CHALMERS in the family way with my 2x gr granddad John. For some reason Thomas and Elizabeth didn't marry.

Elizabeth was born in Dalry in 1799. I've researched, as far as I can on line, all Thomas Bryce's recorded born between 1780 and 1805. I've eliminated half due to occupation, marriage before 1818, death, emigration etc. The remainder are listed below.

If you recognise any I'd be glad of any details you have, such as occupation, marriage, children and their birth places.

Key: Baptism Date - Parents - Parish

1) 04/02/1798 - ANDREW BRYCE/ANN GIBSON - GORBALS (A weaver in nearby Rutherglen in 1841. Married Mary Warnock around 1824 in Rutherglen, so unlikley to be my Thomas, but was a weaver).
2) 13/08/1794 - JAMES BRYCE/CATHRINE SCOTT - GLASGOW (possibly a Spirit Dealer in Gorbals in 1841)
3) 29/06/1794 - DAVID BRYCE/HELEN MAIR - GLASGOW (another possibility for the Spirit Dealer in Gorbals in 1841)
4) 17/07/1793 - WILLIAM BRYCE/MARGARET INGLIS -	ALLOA
5) 27/10/1793 - JAMES BRYCE/EUPHAN ROSS	- ALLOA
6) 22/09/1793 - JAMES BRYCE/KATHARINE YOUNG - EDINBURGH
7) 01/04/1792 - WILLIAM BRYCE/MARGT ROBERTSON - GARGUNNOCK, Stirling
8) 21/02/1791 - JOHN BRYCE/JEAN MILLAR - AVONDALE, LKS (a weaver Widowed in Mauchline in 1851)
9) 02/03/1789 - JOHN BRYCE/KEY - BALFRON, Stirling (Possibly died young. A John Bryce and Elizabeth Kennedy had a son Thomas in Balfron in 1805)
10) 17/02/1789 - JOHN BRYCE/HELEN KAY - KIPPEN, PERTH
11) 01/07/1787 - THOMAS BRYCE/HELEN DUNCAN - PAISLEY (Living in Glasgow by 1792)
12) 17/08/1785 - THOMAS BRYCE/AGNES BROWN - SYMINGTON LKS
13) 08/09/1785 - JAMES BRYCE/MARGARET ANDERSON - LEITH SOUTH MLN
14) 13/10/1782 - JAMES BRYCE/MARGARET BRYDON - CARNWATH LKS (may have married Euphemia Jackson)
15) 22/09/1782- JOHN BRYCE/MARY PIERCY - CARMICHAEL LKS (may have married Euphemia Jackson)
16) 19/06/1781 - ??? - WEST CALDER
17) 07/01/1779 - JAMES BRYCE/AGNES MILLAR - LOGIE, PERTH (xned 24 Jan in Stirling)

18) abt 1800 - ?? - Dalziel (an IGI entry - no other info. None such recorded in Scotlands People though).
19) 07/09/1800 - THOMAS BRYCE/HELEN FULLER - CARMICHAEL Lks (Family moved to Lanark when Thomas was an infant. Was he living in Newton Lanark and marry Margaret Millar in 1828. Or was he the weaver in Barony in 1841, aged 35-39. Or?)

Richard Bryce
Alexander Bryce born about 1822 was a widower when he married Jane Steven Gibson (born 29 Sept 1831 Main St. Newton on Ayr) at Church of Scotland Newton on Ayr, 1 Sept 1857. The marriage was conducted by the Rev. Henry Gibson (relationship to the bride unknown), witnesses were James Gibson (brother of the bride) and Margaret Hall (relationship unknown)
Jane's parent's, James Gibson and Agnes Ferguson were both alive at the time of the marriage (I have more information about Jane's siblings and ancestors).
Alexander's parent's were stated on the marriage certificate to be Alexander & Margaret Bryce both deceased at the time of the marriage.
Alexander's first wife was Agnes Hawtorn Stewart who had died 27 May 1855.
Alexander and Elizabeth had 5 children, one of whom,John, born Nov 1854, died shortly after his mother, 2 Aug 1855.
From various records that I had found it would be safe to assume that Jane played a major part in the upbringing of her step children.
Alexander & Jane had four children, the eldest being James Gibson Bryce who was born, 17 December 1857, Main St. Newton on Ayr.
The second child was Agnes Ferguson Bryce, born 18 Feb. 1859, Main Street, Newton on Ayr.
From records at this time it woould appear that Alexander worked as a coachman or in various other occupations related to dealing with horses.
The family moved to Glasgow, where again Alexander worked as a coachman, living at 22 Robertson Lane; their third child (my great grandmother)Jane Bryce was born there.
I have no record of Alexander's death but from a poor relief record (1863) I have information that Alexander died at sea in Demerara, Dec 1862 - no other information.
At this time Jane lived at 285 Argyle St., Glasgow and was pregnant. Jane gave birth to a baby girl at this address, 27 January 1863, Elizabeth Good Bryce. This baby died 16 Feb. 1864.
About James Gibson Bryce
From the 1881 census
lived at
5 Lawerence Terr. West Ham Essex
Occupation - Baker

Married Mary Elizabeth Horth
I don't have a date for their marriage but from census records think that they met in England rather then in Australia.
The first record that I have for a birth for them is
Alexander James Bryce, born Balmain North NSW about 1890
Alexander was killed in action 30 Sept 1917 he was married to a Sarah Louise
I have records relating to his military service.
They also had a son James Sydney Bryce, born in Balmain, killed in action, 14 April 1917
I have records of another two children also born in Balmain, Leslie William Bryce 30 July 1899 and Jean S. Bryce born 1900.
I know that the family in Scotland were in touch with James'family at least until the death of my gt. grandmother, Jane Bryce in 1949 and that one of her children,John Brown Baker visited them in Australia.
Some of Jane's grandchildren emigrated to Australia in the 1960's, one of whom is still living in Sydney and several of her gt. granchildren living in Sydeny and Brisbane.
I recently moved from Glasgow to Millport (a small seaside town on the Isle of Cumbrae)
Since moving, I have not been able to do much with my family history records - we took over the running of a hotel here and work has overtaken just about everything else!)
Many of my records are stored on a hard drive which is still in Glasgow.
If you get in touch with me via email
megank50@hotlmail.com
I will do my best to give you all of the information that I have.

Re: Francis Bryce and Janet Waddell

Hi Luis,
I know quite some time has passed since you posted your message in 2004; however as I am relatively new to Ancestry and as we seem to be researching the same ancestors I thought I might reply in the hope we (or others researching the same family) may be able to connect.

Francis Bryce and Janet Waddell were my ggg-grandparents and the following is what I have been able to establish.

Francis and Janet had seven children - James (born about 1815), John, Francis, Janet, Margaret, David and Jane (or Jean). I have been unable to find any records of the marriage of Francis and Janet nor the births of any of their children, although the reason for this this may have been provided by the suggestion that Francis Bryce was a Quaker. I would be interested to confirm this.

James Bryce (the eldest son?)was my gg-grandfather. He was a Cooper by trade and left Scotland (aged 18 years) and arrived in New York in 1833. His whereabouts are not known until 1843 when he married and went to the Cape of Good Hope Colony where he established his own Cooperage business and later owned and operated a hotel. Between 1852 and 1858 he and his family came to Australia.

As you say in your post, determining ancestors and verifying dates and family stories has been quite a challenge.

I hope this may add a little to the Francis Bryce family story and I would very much welcome any comments or further information.

Re: James Gibson Bryce Scotland to Australia

James Gibson Bryce was my grandfather.

My name is John Gahan Bryce.I was born in Manly Australia in 1947. My initials JGB are after my grandfather

I've seen one photo of my grandfather but know very little of him apart from Dad talking very fondly of him. Dad was also very proud of his Scottish brackground. I think my grandfather is buried in Manly cemetry.

My mother Daphne was with Elizabeth when she passed away.

Alexander was my Dads brother. We have seen his grave in France. Many years ago we met Rene the daughter of Alexander & Sarah in Atherthon Noth Queensland. The family name is Mainsbridge

Another brother James was also killed in France.

Would like very much after all these years to learn more of my Grandfather & Scottish family.
