Reason for Bridges being changed to Brydges

Just was curious if anyone, knew why the bridges last name was changed from the I to the Y. I have heard stories that was passed down saying that it was something to do with horse thieves or living on the wrong side of the road.

If anyone has any clarification, i would really appreciate it.

omg, that is part of my family. I won't ever forget the name Minerva (just for a marriage cert for them) since that is a very uncommon name. I don't have any expanded information for them though :(

I'm going to see if I have this right. my great great great grandfather was your great grandfathers brother. My gf was Thomas (Bert), his father was Thomas (B: 1846), and his father was Robert (B: 1804), his was John (B: 1776, married to francis wix or wicks). This is where the brothers would have been. It would have been Robert(B: 1804) & William (B: 1806). I look forward to talking to you more. Email me and we can see what information we can fill in.

Norfolk is the area I found also. My ggrandfather John was born in 1839 in Hamilton, Ont and died in Petrolia 1910, his son, my gf was born in Petrolia 1870. From my research John's father gggranfather William Brydges b.1806 in Beeston, Norfolk Eng died in Wentworth(Hamilton)1877. John's other children were: William 1863; Louisa 1867; Elizabeth 1869; Minerva 1875; Arthur 1877; Henry 1881; Ida 1886. Grandfather Alfred and his brother Arthur came west and settled in MB and Sask. and the family lost touch with them.....maybe are part of THAT family.

My family is from the petrolia area who are Brydges. Unfrotuneately, I don't have any Alfred but I do have some John's (both Brydges/Bridges)in around the 1860s. It's possible that they might be relatives (or incomplete lines)

All the Bridges/Brydges I have have been able to find are from England (in the Norfolk area)

Oops. I'm afraid you've got that a little mixed up. There is a Ted Brydges in North Battleford, but that is a different family than the one who used to own the car dealership (John).

I am related to the Ted in North Battleford and am unaware of any relation to the Ted in Portage.

I’m seeking info on George W Bridges who married Amanda Curry in Marquette, Michigan on September 3, 1866. He was born in Maine circa 1840. His parents are Joseph Bridges and Elizabeth Pendleton. I have found nothing that indicates he ever lived in Ontario. He and Amanda had one child, Minnie born in Wisconsin in 1868. George does not appear with his family in the 1870 US Census which led me to believe that he had died. Evidently Minnie was raised by her paternal grandparents in Lima, Rock County, Wisconsin. Amanda Curry Bridges remarried in 1874 (Thomas Jefferson Wheeler) and they had several children.

There seems to be some confusion here. Let me share what I have found about my George W Bridges.

1850 US Census George (age 10) is living in Eastport, Washington County, Maine with parents Joseph & Elizabeth Pendleton Bridges.
Amanda (age 4) is living in Wheatland, Monroe County, NY with her parents John & Ann Curry,

1860 US Census George (age 19) is living in Marquette, Marquette County, Michigan with his parents Joseph & Elizabeth Brydges (sic). He is listed as working for the railroad as is his father, Joseph.
Amanda (age 15) is also living in Marquette, Marquette County, Michigan with her mother Ann.

1870 US Census has Amanda (age 23) and daughter Minnie (age 2) living with George's parents in Lima, Rock County, Wisconsin. George is not shown on this census and Amanda Curry Bridges remarried in 1874 so I have been working under the assumption that George died sometime between 1868 when Minnie was conceived and 1870 when she appears in Wisconsin without him. But I have not found any record of George's death so there is the possibility that they were divorced and he remained in Michigan and remarried.

I still have not found much info about my grandfather. Alfred and Phyllis (Phillis)PRINGLE moved around Saskatchewan quite a lot and the family was in the Humboldt census 1906. He was present for my parents marriage Dec 31, 1944 in Winnipeg MB. I have a single pic of him in front of my parents home in Flin Flon MB in 1945 and I believe he died sometime between 1945-1949. I don't know where he is buried. His parents were John Brydges and Phoebe CLELAND or CLEALAND. Alfred and Phyllis had 5 girls and my dad Charles. Surely there must be someone out there can help me??

Alfred is my grandfather and was present at the marriage of my parents in in December 1944 at age 80. On the cert it states my father's racial origin as Irish. Now on that I would have to assume that Alfred's father was also Irish. Does anyone have any information that might help me? Alfred's father may have been John Brydges or John Bridges and there are many of them from Ireland and England as well also with the spellings of both names.

I found a picture of Mr. and Mrs John Edward Brydges in the Canadian Archives and in Glenbow Archives website.
Children, William, Laura, and Frances. John Brydges, a carriage-maker, homesteaded west of Nanton in 1910.
Hi! My mother's family name was Bridges and lived in Newaygo County Michigan for years. I have recently found that the family surname was indescriminately spelled both Bridges and Brydges. My gr greatgrandfather George Bridges was supposedly from Canada and I am finding that his birth year would probably have been 1842.....very close to the year of your William. I would like to compare notes. I still live not far from Grant Michigan. I would be interested to know if you have made a definite connection with any birth place in Canada.......I am at a stand still. I was told the family came to MI from Canada and down through the upper penninsula.......I have found record of a George Bridges in Marquette county Michigan in the mid 1850's. You may email me directly at abbeyrode@ yahoo.com
Hi Deb, I was glad to get a reply regarding the Brydges family, I'm sorry to say that I don't think that William & George were brothers, but they may have been cousins. William's parents were Robert Brydges and Ann Shaw. They were from Ramsay, Canada and arrived there from England in 1834 or 1835. I'm not sure if this will help you in your search, but every clue may help. I too still live near Grant, so if I can be of any other help please contact me.
