James had a brother Alexander Buchanan (ca 1828/9—11 Mar 1867) who married Elizabeth Kelly (ca 1833—1871/81) on 18 Mar 1852 in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Like Alexander, Elizabeth was born in Ireland, but was of Neilston parish, Renfrewshire when she was married. Her maiden name is also given as Craig in some of her children's records.
Alexander and Elizabeth (Kelly) Buchanan had children:
1. Sarah Craig, b. 21 Feb 1853, Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland
2. Mary, b. 14 Jan 1855, Airdie, Lanarkshire, Scotland
3. Catharine, b. 4 Feb 1857, Mossend, Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland
4. Elizabeth, b. 23 Feb 1859, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland
5. John, b. ca Mar 1861, Chapelhall, Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland
6. Robert, b. ca 1863, Longlee, Lanarkshire, Scotland
7. William, b. 16 Oct 1865, Cuilhill, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Alexander was a coal miner and died as a result of injuries he sustained during an accident at the Heathery Knowe No. 2 mine in Baillieston. Elizabeth (Kelly) Buchanan appears in the 1871 census with her children, but by 1881, her sons are living with their Uncle James Buchanan and his wife Margaret Tatlock.
I'm seeking information on James and Alexander Buchanan, their parents John and Mary (Irwin/Irvine) Buchanan, and their children. Information can be found on my web site.
