I don't know why your old post caught my eye. This isn't a sure connection at all, but is a POSSIBLITY! I have a Nancy Buchanan about the right age whose birthplace is unknown but probably Virginia or Kentucky. She was the 7th child (of 9) born to Geo. Buchanan (b. 1747 Augusta Co., VA) and Margaret McAfee. The family wound up in Kentucky in 1784. The parents married in 1765 and some of the children were b. in VA while the rest were b. in KY. It's a good guess that the 7th child was probably b. KY.

I am trying to find records of my Grandfather known as John Buchanan Martin born about 1896 and died whilst in the Navy aged 33yrs in1929. Family history says he talked of 3 sister - Christina, Jessie and Flora and some brothers. He had a grandmother he visited on the Isle of Skye , He ran away from home and was shunned by his family thereafter. He married Phyllis L.G. Hughes and had 2 daughters and 1 son . The eldest daughter Phyllis Elizabeth Martin was my mother. Any information if relevant would be wonderful. Bon chance.

Looking fo information about John Merlin Buchanan and Emily Acker who are listed in the 1880 Census of Benton, Hocking Co., Ohio. John states he was born in Pa (1838) his parents born in Ireland. Emily Ackler was born in New York (1838) and her parents were born in Pa. and New York.
The children listed are:
Lecta: age 17 b.. Ohio
Clara: age 14 b Ohio
Cora: age: 12 b. Ohio
Mary: age 7 b. Ohio
William: age 3 b. Ohio
According to other information I have, there was an older son, Merl, who had left home by 1880.
Any information regarding the parents of John would be greatly appreciated. Emily was a descendant of Casper Acker of Phoutz's Valley, Pa.

Good to hear from you. I am afraid that the Irish part of my line is where I am stopped. All I know is of Neil Buchanan and Esther Mitchell (his wife)declaring that they were born in Ireland. That is the end of my research on that line. Both were born around 1800. My Buchanans came from Scotland to the Manatoba Canada in the 1880's and then became US citizens and homesteaded in North Dakota until they moved to Washington in 1900. Sorry we could not matchup.

knowledge of first wife, Mary Jane Buchanon as it is spelled on the SS information belonging to their oldest son, James Edward Bates, born Feb 9th, 1885. From off of a Nashville Local History Indexes, William and Mary were married May 6th, 1884, and there her maiden name was spelled Buchanan. The other two sons, were Preston (L?) Bates, born aprox 1888, and Ross bates born 1893. This information came off of a 1910 Tennessee soundex with the spelling of Buchannan. They, William, James, Preston, & Ross were listed living with the brother in law (Uncle) in Davidson County Tennessee. This brother to Mary Jane, (who I believe had passed away), was William D Buchannan, his wife's name was Bettie and His Father who also lived with him, was William F Buchannan (who originated from Scottland). This information also included a birthdate of month and year, for each of them. James differed from SS information by 1 year (1886) James: Born: Feb 9, 1885 : SS# 410-05-5956: at time of issuance lived at 1717 Greasmond? Ave. Nashville Tenn.Worked at Nashville Union (?) Terminal; He acquired his SS# on 2/16/1937
the other two birth dates are what I got off of that index. William Preston Bates was listed born in Aug of 1857. in Virginia. The Sons were all born in Tennessee.
From what I have gathered, William Preston and my GGrandmother Gertrude Nee (Hooper) Bates Bell wasn't lining together at this time, and may have very well been divorced or seperated, but there was atleast one child born to them at the time of 1910 census.
I am still hoping that some one out here can make a connection. I have no other knowledge available at this time about William Preston Bates syblings or parents, other than that He (William) was borne in Virginia.
I would love to hear from some one who has information on any of his three oldest sons all whom were suppose to be children of Mary.
