My gr. gr. grandparents, from Prussia, left Bremen on the ship Schiller with three children. They arrived in Baltimore 06 Jul 1857 with a final destination of Milwaukee, WI. They had six more children after they got to Milwaukee and spent the remainder of their lives there. The children spread out over much of the Midwest.

Jim
My husband does match his DNA with a WI BUCHHOLZ but we do know where our BUCCHOLZs came from in Prussia (at the time) it is Posen -- present time north-central Poland.

At one time one of German wrestlers told me that BUCHHOLZ was like Smith or Jones. Don't know if he is right, but I do in our little tiny town of Belle Fourche when our daughter was in school there were four BUCHHOLZs in her clas and none related (at least this side of the ocean) Good luck, MaryinSD

You mention the Wisconsin BUCHHOLZ family. Do you (or someone else you know) have more info on them . . .such as what port they sailed from Europe, when they came to U.S., what U.S. (or Canadian) port they entered, in what WI county(s) they initially settled?

I'm hoping info might unearth possible leads re my gr-grandmother Julianna (or Anna Julia) Buchholz BOTZ/BOATZ. Supposedly born 1844-1846 in Alsace-Lorraine and came to U.S. early 1860s. No info on parents, siblings, place of birth, etc.

Any help appreciated.

Kathy

I have some contact with ND BUCHHOLZ's. Mine settled from Posen in central SouthDakota. But Kevin's DNA says he matches the BUCHHOLZ from Wisconsin too.
Kevin's grandfather Edward b 1877 was the son of Johann b 1840 and Justine FENSKE -- Johann's brother was Christav b 1842 (in Wisitz, Posen, PR) came to USA and settled in Richland County, ND died 1925.

Re: Other Alsace-Lorraine <> Prussia Buchholz Families?

My g-grandmother was born in Alsace-Lorraine. This info was provided by her brother July 23, 1962. "Buchholz Family History. Briefly touching on the facts that are of interest to us I will state: That in the spring of 1887 our father was taken with the notioin to leave Germany and estblish himself and family in the USA. Our father, Bergmann Heinrich Buchholz hada been born in 1844 in Bavaria. Our mother, Catherina Schmidt was born in 1843 in Prussia. Now having madae his decision to leave Germany, fther communicated with his step=brother, Jacob Bauer, in Wadsworth, Ohio, and being encouraged by him to come on, father set out in November of the same year. Mother and the children remained behind until he had secured work and earning for our journey and re-establishing expenses. In the latter part of April 1888, the ticket for our journey arrived. We were staying with mothers brother, Peter Schmidt in Friedrichstahl, Germany. But it was too late for our mother, she having passed away about a week before and is buried there, leaving to our care an infant sister which we had baptised and named for mother. Having disposed of such as we could not take with us and with the aid of our Uncle Peter, mother's only brother, we made arrangements for the trip. Uncle Peter went with us to our place of embarkation which was Antwerp, Belgium. Here, the second day after our arrival, our baby sister died and is buried there. Uncle Peter stayed with us until we boarded the ship which was the Red Star Liner "Northland". It was on June 21st, we sailed and the following Sunday, June 22 at 3PM it being foggy, we collided with an oil tanker which caused said oil tanker to sink and our ship receiving damages which caused or made slow speed necessary and we therefore arrived in New York on the morning of July 4, nearly five days behind schedule. On the day following the ship collision our brother Jacob fell down the stairs, leading from the upper deck to steerage and broke his leg and this not having properly attended to by the ship's doctor he had to remain in New York in a hospital. Sister Lizzie offered to stay with him while the rest of us resumed our journey for Wadsworth where we arrived on Sunday July 7. Father had rented a house on the north side of Broad St. by the railroad tracks and planted a garden. We lived in Wadsworth until the early summer of 1889 when we moved to Canton, Ohio, where opportunities for work were much better. Here, a few months later, father married the widow Brissel which proved the end of our family unity. One by one the children left this unhappy home, the last being baby Minnie whom I took to life with me after I had established myself on the railroad at Galion, Ohio. She was there with me a little over a year when she was taken with dipther and died and was buried there. Sometime in 1891 father and stepmother moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he passed away in 1895 and is buried in Canton." written by Henry Buchholz
Bertmann Heinrich Buchholz b. 2.25.1844 d. 12/18/1895 (brain cancer) Catherina Schmidt Buchholz b. 1843 d.
Hi again - it could be my great-grandmother, Wilhelmina Hammond, who married (my) Christina's son, Henry Herrmann Theodore Buckholtz (diff. spelling this time). She is another "mysterious" lady - found her brother, James Edgar Hammond, but can find no trace of Wilhelmina's parents.

I know what you mean about getting only scraps of information, especially off the Internet. There is so much similarity with others of the same name that you just pray "this is the one!"

However, it reaps many benefits when you can connect with another "cousin" as I have; I've connected with at least 6 cousins I never knew I had, one of whom very generously provided some fantastic photos, like several I have of Wilhelmina and Henry Buckholtz in 1890's costumes. What a treasure!

Good luck with your search.

Fran

There was a Wilhelmina somewhere in the censuses that I looked at for Christina Gephardt. I'm going to get the file out this week and look at it closer. Hopefully I won't be confused on this subject much longer as it is a bit frustrating to go through all the information to only get scraps.

Hi, sorry it's been a long time since I replied to your original query.

It's very interesting what you said about Christina Gephardt, but I doubt it's the same woman. According to my family lore, Christina may have been married prior to her marriage to Henry Buchholz (or alt. spelling). I had always been told she had been married to a Charles Hazenmayer of Germany and had 2 sons by him (Gotfierd could have been one of them). Or another theory is she was Christina Hazenmayer and married a Gephardt. Duh! It gets so confusing and we have such little information about our immigrant ancestors and who their families were.

However, my great-great grandmother, Christina Gephardt, did marry Henry Buchholz and lived her remaining years in Washington, DC area. She was b about 1831 in Germany, and d after 1906 in DC. From a photo I have, she looked just like Winston Churchill. I have found several Christine Gephardt's thru Ancestry, but nothing really to pick her out from the others.

Thanks again for replying. If you think there is a link, I'd love to know.

Hi again, Steve - thanks so much for the information; I will input it into my database. I will be happy to send you all that I have on the Buckholtz's (you have zillions of cousins, 2nd & 3rd). Would you mind sending me your email address directly to mine; that way I can send stuff a bit better than thru the forum.

My email is: franniedavis@verizon.net

Do you have all your Thorne information? I may start poking around to see what I can find and attach to the Buckholtz end (if you don't mind, that is), since I have membership with o Ancestory.com and some others resources.

Have you tried the Latter Day Saints website on genealogy - it's free and has some good stuff, but limited. I think I usually search under "LDS, Genealogy"

I will be happy to look up stuff for you in my resources, just give me a holler.

I find it so touching that you adopted your mother's maiden name - how wonderful. Go guy!

I had a feeling Lily and George Jr were twins. My mom had twins, too, but lost them during WWII.

I can give you some family stories about the Buckholtz's if you're interested. I'll make up a little bio for you. The men of the family were stern and hard to live with. My

Thanks again for the family information.

PS - hope you got some rest

Frannie,

Holiday greetings to you as well. Hoo boy, gotta stop writing people letters when I'm too weary to adequately proofread them. Let me clarify:

My paternal grandfather was George O. Buckholtz Sr. HE was married to Bertha Finley, whose family was from either Maryland or Pennsylvania (not sure). Am still ardently seeking accurate infomation about her but have thus far been stymied. Both George Senior and Bertha died before I ever got to know them. George & Bertha's oldest boy was my father, George O. Buckholtz Jr. He was born 7/2/1922 in Washington DC. His siblings were his twin sister Lily, Robert and David. Because my family lived far across the country, we had sparse interactions with these Buckholtz's over the years. I couldn't even tell you which cousins are still around today.

I was born Steven Carl Buckholtz 3/26/1958 in Washington DC. My siblings are Daniel, Cynthia and Teresa. My mother was Barbara Lackey Thorne(b 12/25/1929) of Alexandria, VA. Her family's ancestry is well-documented through her mother, Lillian Lackey and her father, Carl Thorne. The Thornes were from southern Maryland. Their progenitor in America was William Thorn (b approx 1675). I took the Thorne name legally to honor my mother's memory after she passed away in 1989.

I have reached a point in time where learning all I can about my family history has become acutely important to me. Despite painful personal associations, I am still eager to learn about Buckholtz forebearers. I have limited access to information sources and must rely on what I can glean from family forums on free websites. Your help on this score has meant a great deal to me. Many thanks!

Steven - happy holidays and great to hear from you. I've still been trying to locate our original Henry Buchholz from Baden, Ger - it's such a common name, though. Did your grandfather ever talk of him (or his wife, Christine Gephardt)?

Thanks for the info on David & Robert. I am piecing together all of George O, Sr's children: Lily, George, Jr, Robert & David, been trying to find some obituaries that might give some added info, but have only found a few.

Did you know that Henry Herrmann Theodore's wife, Wilhelmina Hammond, had sued him for divorced back in 1920, but nothing came of it, I don't think, since they were still married when they died. There's a small article in the Wash Post on this in 1920.

The original Henry Buchholz (diff spellings, ad naseum) & Christina (or Christiane as in some census) had several other children, other than Henry H T: William (b 1863) - I think he became a musician in 1890; Leonora (b 1867), Hammond (b 1868), Henry H T (b 1869) and Emma (b 1869), whom I believe married Oliver J Preston of DC

Still don't have anything on Wilhelmina Hammond's parents (she had a bro, James Edgar) - my grandmother had told me his name was Atwill, but I am beginning to question some of what my grandmother told me years ago.

I get a bit ticked when our ancestors don't fill out their census forms, tee hee. If only they had known how much we want that information.

Send me info on your family when you feel up to it (dates, wives' maiden names, etc). I know your grandmother was Bertha Finley and your mother is Barbara Thorne (??).

Have been in touch with our "cousins" the Bragaw's (descended from George Sr's sister, Leonora and they have been helpful for their end of the family tree.

Anyway, Steven, I hope you and yours have a happy holiday. Write when you get a chance, always nice to hear from you.

Frannie
All these discoveries are exciting!! I have been discovering more about our BUCHHOLZ's - Edward b 1877 Schoensee, Possen, Germany (we have his baptism record - he is my husband Kevin's grandfather) Edward is the son of Johann Ludwig Buchholz b 22 Sep 1840 Jeziorke (Wirsitz) Posen, PR, and Justine Fenske. They did not come to USA. Now I have discovered three more uncles -- Edward came to SD to join his Uncle Henry BUCHHOLZ b 09 Feb 1859 to Johann Buchholz and Louise Kobczinske. Three
more brothers from that family also came to USA - Wilhelm Buchholz lived in Charles City, IA; Friedrich Buchholz from Michigan City, IN; and Christoph Hermann Buchholz b 08 May 1843 lived and died in Homestead, Richland, North Dakota. I have discovered living relative of each of these families. The widow of Arthur BUCHHOLZ, CA has shared much of her research on the North Dakota BUCHHOLZ's. Arthur is the grandson of Christoph and one of her early pictures of Fred was taken in Milwaukee, WI. Edward's obituary states that he spent 3 years in WI before he settled in Spink County, SD in 1896. I think we are all making good progress on this family. (once some high school wrestlers visiting from Germany told me BUCHHOLZ was a very common name in Germany - like Johnson around here.)

I don't have any more info on Julius Buchholz. I am guessing that he may have come to Wisconsin because of Marie Schmeling. One of the witnesses was a Ferdinald Scheer which is Marie's mother's maiden name.

"Davter98", I addressed my comments to you because at one point you suggested Julius Buchholz' possible parents were Christoph and Susanna Buchholz. This couple are cousins of Christoph and Wilhelmine (Salzwedel) Buchholz from Schoenfeld, Flatow county, W.Prussia. Susanna and her children emigrated 1868-1874 especially to Fond du Lac County (Ripon area), while Christoph and Wilhelmine emigrated in 1865 to Jackson and La Crosse counties. But I see in the comments of "Arbella98" and your responses that your Julius (b ca 1856) emigrated very late (1882) and resided in Milwaukee. "Arbella" says your Julius' parents were Carl Buchholz and Caroline Lawerentz (wedding record of 1882). I don't know the origins of this family at all, but I would be interested in learning more about them (and any Buchholz family in Wisconsin, especially if they have connections to Fond du Lac or Jackson counties). It seems a number of them emigrated from Flatow and Wirsitz counties in eastern Europe (from which descendants of mine also emigrated). Please provide places as well as names and dates to help clarify your comments. Thanks for any response.

MJ Leahy, T.L.Sargust, Mary Buchholz, and others who have written about this and related Buchholz families,
I have just connected your family (at least geographically) to Mary's and my Buchholz family. While going through old 1997 resarch notes from the Krojanke (Flatow county) W.Prussia films, I came across the marriage record of your (MJ and TL's) ancestor-- it reads (in translation):
24 March 1845- farmer Christoph Buchholz from Schönfeld and young woman Wilhelmine Salzwedel from there.
There are many Christoph Buchholzs in that parish, and so I'm not sure now his ancestry. But since he is from the same small village where my Buchholz' originate, they are likely related somehow. A search of the Krojanke films too would give the Salzwedel ancestry as well as the later births born to this couple which you (MJ Leahy) mention.
I have researched this and other Buchholz' back another generation or more (although the records get skimpy before 1780).
Anyone with more information or would like more, please write at neumann@sasktel.net.
Now I need help with finding the parents in Germany. They may have come from
Woelpe, Hannover [now part of Erichshagen east of Nienburg]
or Regensburg, or maybe Schluesselburg ,the one near Petershagen. I think Frederick was born in Seppenhausen[town],Bayern [state Bavaria], Regensburg[district and Parish], Oberpfalz [Province], Pfatter [catholic parish]Germany; or Steimbke, Nienburg, Hannover near Linsburg, Church in Husum, Hannover. The towns I listed all have came up in my research to find the parents and I only listed them as a starting place to look. I have no proof that the Buchholz's came from any of the listed places. I'm at a dead-end looking for the Buchholz parents. Thank You to anyone that can help with this research.Ellanor

According to my information, in 1854 Henry Buchholz and his wife, Caroline Kahle Buchholz left Germany with their eight children: Caroline, Ferdinand, Henry, Ernestine, Diedrich, Louisa, William, Wilhelmine. They came to America in a sailing vessel, which was very crowded; it took nine weeks to cross the ocean. When they reached New York, Henry was very sick. The authorities said he had tuberculosis, and would not let him enter the U.S. He died shortly after their arrival in New York City. He may be buried in Potters Field, but no record can be found.

Caroline and her children came to Guttenberg, Iowa and lived with Henry’s brother, Frederich Bucholz and his children. Frederich’s wife had died on December 1, 1850 – she was Mary Sophie Kahle, Caroline’s sister.

On November 18, 1859 Caroline and Frederich were married in Guttenberg. On October 31, 1868, they sold their farm, and came by covered wagon to Waverly, Iowa, living there a short time. They later bought 320 acres in section 33, Fremont Township, Butler County, Iowa.

Somehow I didn't receive then.
The only info I have on Emil is probably also what you have.
I need HELP with NEW Buchholtz Buchholz information...

Recently within the pervious week I have found that Gottlieb Wilhelm Buchholz who was born July 1812 and married to Elizabeth Dorothea Behrens ca. 1835. They had a son Gottlieb August Buchholz in July 1836 in Preussen. They supposedly left Germany in 1846 per the Brandenburg Emigration per ancesry.com BUT I finally found them landing in New York in June 1848 and then they went to Dodge County, Wisconsin.

Per the 1857 Census of Minnesota I found Gottlieb's household and therein was his 72 year old father Wilhelm Buchholtz. Gottlieb's brother in law Gottfried Behrens Berendt or Burnt were was living beside Gottlieb's family. Gottfried Behrendts and his wife & Daughter were on the same ship Reimer that came from Hamburg Germany to NY on July 21, 1846 with Gottlieb's father, mother Charlotte Sophie Louise nee: Iden (or Ide) and a brother Carl Buchholtz.

I am seeking information about Wilhelm Buchholtz Buchholz and his wife Charlotte Sophie Louise Iden who were baptizing their children in the Sophienkirche (Sophien Church) located in Berlin, Germany. They had a son Frederich Wilhelm Buchholtz in 1827 per the LDS website, and a daughter Charlotte Louise Buchholtz in 1829. Both christened in the Sophienkirche.

My ancestor Wilhelm Heinrich Buchholz was born January 19, 1826 and either he is a sibling to Gottlieb Buchholz etc or a nephew to Gottlieb. Gottlieb's children and Wilhelm Heinrich Buchholz's children in Minnesota did associate with each other quite often.

Can ANYONE tell me more about this Wilhelm Frederich or Frederich Wilhelm Buchholtz and his wife Charlotte Sophie Louise Iden or Ide. I am so desepate to find out more about this family ancestry.

Did they migrate to Sophien to have their children baptised having come from some outlaying community near Berlin? Gottlieb says his place of origin was Tamsel, Landsberg Kreis, Preussen.

I think that Wilhelm Heinrich Buchholz came to NY from Hamburg aboard the ship (Sir) Isaac Newton in May 1845 yet he claimed as an elder man, that he immigrated in 1844.

I can be contacted via my email addresses douglaslloyd@verizon.net or douglaslloydbuchholz@yahoo.com
or you can google me to get my telephone number. I live in Lancaster NH.

Thank you kindly.

Douglas Lloyd Buchholz

Steven, thanks for writing. If your parents were Teddy Buckholtz and Joyce Royce, then we are first cousins. If not, my Buckholtz branch starts with:

Henry Buchholz, born bet 1811-1818 in Baden, Ger, d 1872 in DC. Married Christina Gephardt in 1861 in DC. One of their children was:

Henry Herrmann Theodore Buckholtz (b 1869 DC, d 1926 DC), marr. Wilhelmina Hammond in 1891 in DC.

One of their children was:

Henry Buckholtz (b 1900 d 1958), marr Margaret Antonia Tippett (1900-1992).

I have other information as to 2-3 generations of Buckholtz's, but have not gone further back than Henry (first Henry) & Christina Gephardt.

Hope we have some similarities

Fran Davis

franniedavis@verizon.net

Steven - We are cousins, then; we have another cousin in common, Bob Bragaw, grandson of Leonora Buckholtz (Henry H T's dau)who has some photos he sent me, one of which may include George O. I will be very happy to share them. May I have your direct email address so I may send them.

From my research George O Sr & Bertha, had 3 children:
Lily N
George O Jr
Robert A

Bob Bragaw has the info for Leonora's descendents

I do have a 1905 photograph of Henry H T, Wilhelmina, Henry's mother, Christina, and the three children: Henry, George & Leonora - it's a lovely photo and I will share that as well with you.

The census records spell Buckholtz in so many ways, but the earliest reference of our ancestor, the first Henry, listed his name as Buchholz who married Christina Kephart (rather than Gephardt), so it gets confusing.

I have little info on Wilhelmina Hammond (she had a brother named James Edgar, but can't find references to her father, supposedly Atwill Hammond from Westmoreland, VA), but a couple photos of her and her husband, Henry H T that I got from Bob Bragaw

Please keep in touch - my direct email is:
franniedavis@verizon.net

It's so great to know there is another cousin out there, Steven. I'll write and tell Bob Bragaw, too.

'Til later,

Fran

Hi, Mysterious

Wanted to reply to your posting on Christina Gephardt. I really wonder if she is the same as my Christina Gephard, who married Henry Buchholz in DC in 1861.

Christina was supposedly a widow, as well, but had been told by my grandmother that her first husband was a Charles Hazenmayer and that they had at least one child. My date of birth for Christina was abt 1811, although she could have been born in 1795 somewhere in Germany.

I am happy to have found the info you supplied on her "first" family and shall begin researching Gotfierd.

If I find anything new for you I will let you know.

I have a photo of my Christina (she looks just liked Winston Churchill late in life); it was taken in 1905 with her Buchholz (Buckholtz) family.

Thanks

franniedavis@verizon.net
HENRY BUCHHOLZ, Baden-Baden, Ger

Am trying to trace my ancestor's heritage and am particularly interested in:

Henry Buchholz (could have been spelled Bucholz, etc) was born about 1811 in (supposedly) Baden-Baden, Ger, and d 1872 in Washington, DC. He emigrated to the US about 1860 (or earlier). In 1861, Henry married Christina Gephardt (may have married a Hazenmayer prior to marrying Henry). They had a number of children, namely my great-grandfather,

Henry Herrmann Theodore Buckholtz (new spelling). Henry Herrmann was b 1869 in DC and died 1926 in DC). He married Wilhelmina Hammond of Westmoreland Co, VA.

Any information on the Baden-Baden Buchholz family would be most appreciated, thank you.

franniedavis@verizon.net
Hello Fran,

Been a while since we've exchanged information. I must admit that I've lost track of some of our previous communications so please forgive me if anything I mention here is redundant. I received the wonderful pictures and shared them in turn with my siblings. An FYI-my father, George Otis Buckholtz, and his wife, Bertha, actually had 4 children. Their youngest, David Buckholtz, lived in Monrovia, California for years but moved back East shortly before he passed away.

I note that you'd replied to a query in this forum from Helen Buckholtz back in 7/12/03. Helen was my aunt, Robert Buckholtz's wife. Sadly, both she and Robert are now gone. Their oldest son, Robert Buckholtz Jr., lives in Eugene, Oregon.

Haven't been able to find anything new lately regarding Buckholtz ancestors. Keep up the good work and have a great Yule season!

ST

Anna Dressen came with her parents Jacob and Sybilla also in 1869.

I would be interested in sharing more information.

Anna Elizabeth BUCHHOLZ (b. 06 April 1860 in Germany, d. 30 Sep 1901 in Elmira, NY).

I'm researching my family tree and one of the surnames that I cannot find much about is the BUCHHOLZ's.

Here is what I have, which I found in a book that my Grandmother made. Any other information would be helpful.

My 3rd Great Grand Parents:
Catherine Louisa KRONTZ (b. 1828 in Germany, d. 10 Mar 1911 in Elmira, NY) married Unknown BRUSSO.

They had at least one child, Stephen Christ BRUSSO (b. 25 Dec 1855 in West Prussia, m. 1882, d. 04 June 1927 in Elmira, NY). He married Anna Elizabeth BUCHHOLZ (b. 06 April 1860 in Germany, d. 30 Sep 1901 in Elmira, NY).

They had 9 children: Gustave W. (1883-1953), Louis S. (1884-1945), Frank H. (1886-1887), Mary A. (1887-1929), John J. (1889-1983), Charles A. (1893-1951), Edward (1894-1918), Winifred E. (1899-1967), and Berndard T. "George Shamberger" (name change ?, 1900-1990).

John Joseph BRUSSO (b. 08 Aug 1889 in Elmira, NY, m. 17 July 1913, d. 04 Oct 1983 in Sodus, NY) married Minerva Ione RATHBUN (b. 21 Aug 1894 in Portage, NY, d. 17 Sep 1970 in Webester, NY).

I have John and Minerva's children and their descendants, for the most part. I'm looking for further information on the BRUSSO who Catherine KRONTZ may have married and any of their ancestors and Anna BUCHHOLZ's ancestry. I have RATHBUN ancestry back to the 1600's.

Alternate possible spellings of BRUSSO before moving to NYS: Bruseau, Bursoiu, Brusau, and Bruso. I found these spellings on a paper in which someone was translating German into English.

Thank you!

I think i am related to a Christina Gephardt, but in the census that i found for 1880 she was 85 years old and was born in 1795 in Prussia or Poland/Germany. she was widowed and had a son Gotfierd who was 47 at the time. Gotfierd had married a Wilhilmina Drugman who was 49 at the time. this was in St. louis Missouri.

Gotfierd had been born in Posen Poland about 1833. I assume that the family came over between 1840 and 1860 through Pennsylvania as Gotfierd's son Conrad had been born in Pennsylvania about 1864.

Fran,

Thank you for your reply. My father is George O. Buckholtz, son of George O. Buckholtz and Bertha Finley, grandson of Henry H.T. Buckholtz and Wilhelmina Hammond. Interesting to see the variations in spellings of the family's names over the generations. Just today, I uncovered a 1910 US Census abstract for Henry H.T. Buckholtz and family where the last name had been recorded as Bucklott. Wilhelmina's name was listed as Willis on the listing.

I will keep looking for new information and will share what I find. Let me know if your search for details about the family in Germany yields new information. Best wishes.

Steven Thorne (Buckholtz)
